A Message from ECHN Falls are the number one cause of injuries and deaths among older Americans in the U.S.
What we want you to take away from this article, is that there are preventative
measures that can be taken and falls can be avoided!
It is important to first be aware of what puts one at a greater risk for falls. Some of these include being 80
years of age or older, weakness, impaired vision, use of assistive devices and medications.
There are also countless home hazards that are often overlooked, such as, throw rugs, runners,
carpet edges, torn flooring, cords, and small objects or furniture that clutter up pathways. What should you do to make you or a loved one’s home safer?
Start by making sure there is good lighting by regularly changing your light bulbs and adding lamps in low
lit areas. Night lights are also recommended in case you have to make a trip to the bathroom in the middle
of the night. Make sure pathways are clear and clutter is limited, especially around stairs. Use non-skid
bathmats in the shower along with grab bars in the bathroom, shower, toilet and steps in or around the
home. For outdoor steps, use rough abrasive strips to improve traction and footing. Along with
environmental modifications, it is important to focus on yourself as well. Physical therapy comes in as a
preventative measure as it will provide interventions in order to maximize independence, mobility and
function through a variety of balance, proprioceptive and strengthening exercises.
If a fall should occur, physical therapy can assist in tips for recovering from a fall safely.
For further information, please feel free to join ECHN Physical Therapists for our
“Fall Prevention and Balance” community lecture, which will be announced in the Better Being Magazine.
