Year 11 Achievement Awards
This half term has flown by – I think the Ofsted surprise set us up for
the half term. I do hope you have had the opportunity to read the
letter. However, we are very much focussed on this Summer’s
exams. We have met with Middle Leaders to explore their exam
strategy for Year 11 and Year 13; they are very detailed - we now
need your support to ensure over half term they spend some time
on their studies. The Year 11 Mocks Part 2 are in the first and
second week back and Sixth Form interviews start this week as well.
We have enjoyed some lovely evenings this term and photos are featured of the term Year
11 Achievement Awards and Ousedale Young Musician of the Year. The staff have also
organised lots of other activities including the Lego and Debating competitions. In both of
these we have been very successful and have reached the national final in both. Enjoy
reading OuseNews.

Ousedale Young Musician of the Year 2019-2020
@ousedale
On Wednesday 5th February, Ousedale Young Musician of the Year
competition was held at the Olney Campus. The evening got off to
a flying start with an energetic performance of "The Chicken",
written by Alfred James Ellis from Ousedale Jazz Band. The
audience were then treated to some wonderful music from each
competitor, with the standard exceptionally high across the board.
Mr Roland Hills, a well-known figure in Milton Keynes music
teaching circles, had the very difficult task of adjudicating for the
evening. Ousedale Concert Band performed selections from ‘The
Phantom of the Opera’, Webber, as the adjudicator deliberated
over his final decisions. Following feedback to all students
involved, Eleanor Brain (Cello) and Charlotte Bruce (Flute) were
both awarded runner up prizes, with the overall winner going to
Caleb Gray (Piano) for a performance described by Mr Roland Hills
as ‘spine tingling’.
The Music Department would like to thank all students involved for what was an
exceptional evening of music making.

Sporting Achievements
Edward Davey is currently the National Champion for the U13's category (he won this title in April last year). This means that he has been recognised by Badminton England as showing potential to become part of the England team when he reaches 14 years old. He has already represented his country in several International tournaments in Scotland and Belgium. Edward regularly plays for his county and is often asked to play in the U17 category .
Here’s a picture of the National Singles Champion training hard on his smashes and drops preparing for his next big tournament in February. Edward trains at badminton 5 days a week including PT sessions to strengthen his match play. He has also been selected on the Badminton England Pathway which offers him the very best access to England coaches.
Congratulations to the Year 8 Boys’ football team who won their Quarter-Final County Cup fixture against Princes Risborough 8-0. Goals scored by Joel (6), Arinze and Jayden capped off a fine performance. Good luck in the Semi-Finals!!!
PE
Year 7's enjoyed taking part in a rugby
training game recently with St Paul’s, led
by MKRFC.
Well done to Ed Cook on achieving 9th in the Teen Fit Masters Cross Fit
competition. This is an incredible achievement as he was the youngest in
the age group and it was a very tough competition.

Congratulations to Jamie Darcy on his fantastic achievements since he started Cross Country running only 18 months ago. Last year, Jamie alongside two other boys from Ousedale School competed in the Milton Keynes Schools Cross Country Championships gaining 1st, 2nd and 4th out of all the Milton Keynes Schools. Further to this, a selection was made to run in the next level of races which took place on 5th February at Stowe School. Jamie and another student, came 1st and 2nd and were selected to run against all schools in the county of Buckinghamshire. Jamie also came first for the under 17s and has been selected to represent Ousedale School and the county of Buckinghamshire in the English Schools Cross Country Championships in Liverpool at the beginning of March. Only 4 places are automatically selected. Well done Jamie and good luck for the event.

Sports Leaders Trip
A group of students were recently actively involved with the 'Active 30 Project' at Kents Hill Park School, a YST project with Alistair Patrick Hestleton (Paralympic Footballer) and Mike Mullen (former BMX Champion).
During the day students completed a project plan to help improve the wellbeing of students around school. The aim of the project was to develop competent young champions able to facilitate their peers achieving 30 minutes of physical activity within school. They also learnt how to promote the benefits of being physically active, develop leadership skills, reduce health inequality for young people with additional needs and encourage behaviour change towards a more physically active lifestyle.
Lego League Winners
Congratulations to the team who won the Regional First Lego League competition. The competition took place in January and a group of girls from Years 8, 9 and 12 took first place and won the whole competition. They now have the National Finals to look forward to! Good luck!

Aspire
Steve Cole—Author Visit
Author, Steve Cole, recently came to speak to Year 7 students. He talked about what inspired
him to become a writer. He was particularly interested in History and talked about the spy
gadgets used in World War Two and explained about how telephones were invented. He uses
this inspiration in his famous series ‘Young Bond’ which is about spies and action. He also
explained how to create stories and make improvements. Lots of his stories take inspiration
from how many people have to sacrifice their lives to make sure our lives are good.
After the talk, we got to ask lots of questions and Steve even signed some of our own ‘Young
Bond’ books.
By Chase Berry, Mabel Francis and George Clarke (Year 7).
Students have enjoyed a range of Aspire sessions this half term including: “Discover Fortunes” presented by outside speaker: Darren Amos from the Personal Finance Society.
Students learnt about the role of Financial Planners (or
Wealth Managers) and how they help people sort out their
financial future. The Discover Fortunes event gave students
the chance to put in place a financial plan for different
people, ranging from a sports star to retired
multimillionaires. It was a great way for them to understand
more about financial products that they will need later in
life. Working in teams, the Discover Fortunes competition
enabled them to show off their employability skills as well as
learning about financial planning. Everyone enjoyed the
session and found it very informative.

Drama
On Thursday 5th December, Ousedale Year 11 Drama students experienced Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, at the Cambridge Theatre in London. The production showcased spectacular talent and was extremely inspirational for our students to watch, particularly as the main character Matilda was so young in years but so incredibly talented. Young Matilda, played by Tilly-Raye Bayer, had most of the lines within the performance and displayed superb commitment to her role.
Bayer received a standing ovation from many in the auditorium for the hard work and dedication she had put into her performance. The entire show was very well received by our delightful students who thoroughly enjoyed their theatre experience.

Arts Award
Congratulations to 68 students from both campuses who completed their
Bronze Arts Award and to Sophie Callaghan who received her Silver Arts
Award. Students were presented with their certificates earlier this term.
We were delighted with the dedication of the students and the creativity
of their portfolios representing their arts journey.
The Arts Award is an exciting, nationally recognised qualification, which helps students develop as
an artist. It has been an extremely rewarding experience which has enabled students to excel in an
area of the arts which they find interesting and exciting. Students have developed their
independence, confidence and leadership skills and show that they can take responsibility for their
own learning in the portfolios they created.
‘I enjoyed the different skills I have learnt through the Arts Award, especially my time management
and how to be proactive with my performing and teaching.’ (Hannah Goodge, 11MG)
'I enjoyed the whole experience of the Bronze Arts Award, especially teaching someone else some
music!' Rosie Rodden (10SRB)
'I enjoyed the Bronze Arts Award as it allowed me to look at my role in the arts more critically.'
Alyssia Ingram (10 SRB)
‘The Arts Award encouraged me to investigate the arts further. It also inspired me to visit the
theatre more often.’ Aidan Carthy (8NTB)
‘Doing the Bronze Arts Award was extremely exciting. I highly recommend it as it was a brilliant
experience.’ Thomas Buttell (10SV)
‘I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Bronze Arts Award; it was a wonderful learning experience.
It allowed me to learn new skills, and also to share my own. Katherine Chase (8GWT)
‘I made many memories and gained a new confidence. I enjoyed each day I spent doing the arts
award.’ Georgia Haynes (10RC)

Engineering
Western Power visited Ousedale School in January 2020 to deliver a workshop to Year 11 engineering students and discuss current apprenticeship opportunities available within their organisation. For those studying GCSE's, Craft Apprenticeships are currently available. Western Power Distribution is the electricity
distribution network operator for the Midlands, South Wales and the South West.
Students heard about the opportunities available and what’s involved in the apprenticeships over the three years to gain qualifications and experience as part of their training. There was an opportunity to talk to apprentices about their experience, progression opportunities within the organisation and career prospects that are available upon completion of the training as an apprentice. Students also had the chance to carry out a practical exercise in constructing a sample electrical fitting and observed how exothermic welding moulds work in connecting copper wires.

Recipe of the Term—Ferrero Rocher Cheesecake Ferrero Rocher Cheesecake
Ingredients:
140g unsalted butter 300g digestive biscuit, broken up 500g cream cheese, softened 85g icing sugar 300ml double cream 1 tsp. vanilla extract 15 Ferrero Rocher), 5 roughly chopped,
(remainder reserved, to decorate) 4 tbsp. hazelnut chocolate spread 25g hazelnuts, roughly chopped
Method
Make the cheesecake base: melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat. Blitz the biscuits in a food processor to a fine crumb, add the melted butter and pulse until well combined. Tip into a 23cm spring form cake tin and press down firmly into the base. Chill while you make the filling. Beat the cream cheese and icing sugar in a bowl to soften. Whisk the cream and vanilla in a separate bowl until soft peaks form, and then fold into the cream cheese. Stir through the chopped chocolates. Spoon over the biscuit base and smooth with a spatula. Cover with cling film and chill for at least 6 hours, or overnight. Once it has set, place the chocolate hazelnut spread in a saucepan and melt over a low heat for 3-4 minutes until runny. Allow to cool slightly before spreading over the top of the cheesecake. Decorate with remaining chocolates and some chopped hazelnuts. Chill until ready to serve. ENJOY!
