OUR Y STORY

2

Dear YMCA friends,

One-hundred and thirty-three years ago, 24 charter members with an operating budget of $4,000 started the Dallas YMCA. The new Y provided members and the community with a reading room, small gym, bathrooms and a lecture room. The needs of the community were different in 1885 from what they are in 2018 but the beauty of the Y is in its ability to adapt to meet the changing needs. Whatever those needs are, the Y is ready to meet them.

2017 was an outstanding year meeting the needs of the communities we are fortunate to serve. Needs were met through a wide array of programs ranging from summer camp and youth basketball to Safety Around Water apartment swim lessons and our childhood obesity program, Get Up and Go. Families enjoy the Y as a place they can come and spend time together while seniors enjoy the fellowship and a hot cup of coffee after a workout. All of this work is underscored by our mission statement, “To put Christian values into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.”

We are proud to share with you a snapshot into the life of your YMCA over the past year. You are an important part of what makes the Y great and we appreciate your participation and support.

This is Our Story.

Warmly,

Kelvin Walker Curt Hazelbaker

CAMP GRADY SPRUCE - Beth Taylor

Beth Taylor is a committed Board Member and volunteer who has given her time and talents to support Camp Grady Spruce in so many ways. This was especially evident this year when camp experienced a large turnover in several long-term employees. Beth took the time to advise and inspire us. She works with Camp on an ongoing basis, helping train new staff and camp counselors each summer, leading workshops at the Y’s Women’s Wellness Weekends, and serving on the Executive Committee and as an Annual Campaign division leader. Beth has been a major donor for over 30 years in Annual Campaigns, Capital Campaigns, and the annual endowment events. Her dedication, generosity, and willingness to give her time to camp, the staff, and the board is a true gift.

COLLIN COUNTY ADVENTURE CAMP - Sally Evans

For the past few years, Sally Evans has been a big part of CCAC. She is a volunteer board member, serves on the Outdoor Education Committee, and gladly offers her knowledge and expertise to the Outdoor Education program through staff trainings and guided nature hikes. Sally’s extensive career in the field of environmental education over the past four decades has been a tremendous asset to Camp. In 1980, Sally took her experiences to Plano to begin an outdoor education program at the Plano ISD Outdoor Learning Center, where she would remain until she retired in 1997. Although she will deny it, Sally is an invaluable member of our team at CCAC. The Outdoor education program loves having her around to glean knowledge from and she is always a lively part of our board meetings. We greatly appreciate all that she brings to our camp, our staff, and our students.

COPPELL YMCA - Balki Chamkura

Balki Chamkura has served on the Coppell Y board for five years and prior to that served as a sports volunteer. Balki has served on the Leadership Development committee the past two years and has recruited and mentored new board members. Recently he stepped in to the Campaign Co-Chair role, and has done a great job of being an advocate for the YMCA along with other community organizations in which he is involved. Balki has also been instrumental in getting adult volleyball started at the Coppell Y and has helped developed the skills of younger players. Thanks to Balki for his outstanding service to the families in our community.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR

CROSS TIMBERS YMCA - Chance Post

Chance Post has been involved at the Cross Timbers YMCA for the past nine years. As a tremendous Y volunteer, he has coached his children in Y sports programs, served as an Adventure Guides Base Camp Officer since 2012, and has served on the Y Board of Management since 2016. Last year, he also took on leading the chapel on Sunday morning at the Adventure Guides campouts. Chance is involved in the Cross Timbers YMCA’s Annual Campaign, helping make sure the programs continue to be available to everyone in the community. His dedication to not only his family, but all families in the Flower Mound community can be seen in how he works to positively impact the children and families we serve. Thank you Chance for all you do!

FRISCO YMCA - Jason Dudley

Jason Dudley is the kind of Board Member everyone would like to call their own. In 2017, Jason provided leadership that included serving as Major Gifts Chair for the Annual Campaign and being actively involved on the Leadership Development Committee and the Capital Development Committee. Additionally, he recently completed a 3 year term as Chair of the Board of Management. This past year Jason was named one of our top producers in money raised for the 2017 Annual Campaign, playing an integral role in raising $250,000 towards the Frisco Family YMCA Capital Campaign. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to the YMCA mission make him an excellent candidate to receive this honor. On behalf of the Board of Managers and Staff of the Frisco Family, we are pleased to present Jason Dudley as our recipient of the 2017 Sam Winstead YMCA Volunteer of the Year.

GRAND PRAIRIE YMCA - Rachel Bermudez

Rachel Bermudez is a great representation of what it means to be a Volunteer of the Year; her display of genuine core values makes her an outstanding volunteer leader and an asset to our YMCA teen programs. Rachel goes above and beyond with helping not only the Youth and Government Program, but also all teen events held at the Grand Prairie YMCA. One of the main reasons behind the success of this year’s high school Youth and Government program in Grand Prairie can be attributed to Rachel. She is not only a volunteer but a role model to these students/teens. The Grand Prairie YMCA is honored to recognize a volunteer such as Rachel.

IRVING YMCA - Wende Burton

Wende Burton has been a long time Irving Y Board Member and volunteer. As the Chairperson of the Membership/Marketing committee, Wende assumed the role of leading and coordinating the efforts for our 2017 Annual Kick Off Celebration and our 60th Anniversary/2018 Annual Kick Off Celebration. Wende was instrumental in developing all communications for both events along with invitations, decorations, scriptwriting, and site coordination. She worked with the Board Chair to ensure he was prepared to host both events as well. Wende also assisted the Executive Director by introducing him to key individuals in the city. She served as the liaison between the Irving Family YMCA and the Circle Ten Council, BSOA. Wende also attended and worked our Healthy Kids event at the branch. We are very proud to select Wende Burton as our Sam Winstead Volunteer of the Year recipient.

JER CHILTON YMCA - Norma Keggereis

Norma Keggereis has been involved with the YMCA for many years giving of her time and talents. She has given hundreds of hours raising funds for the YMCA through our Annual Campaign to ensure the children and families could participate in YMCA programs. Her dedication is endless and her fervor cannot be matched through her volunteer work. Norma spends her life caring and praying with people of the Rockwall Community and those outside of our community that are in need. Norma Keggereis’s committed dedication makes her an obvious choice for the JER Chilton YMCA Sam Winstead Volunteer of the Year.

LAKE HIGHLANDS YMCA - Truitt Matthews

Truitt Matthews has been part of the Lake Highlands YMCA family since 2016. Shortly after becoming a member, Truitt accepted a position on the Lake Highlands YMCA Board of Management in 2017. He was quick to engage in work related to the Christian Values/Family Outreach committee and served as a role-model and mentor to many young men by attending numerous sessions of Midnight Basketball. Truitt has gone above and beyond in every role in which he has been asked to serve, and for the 2018 Annual Campaign has taken on the role of Advanced Campaign Chair. He has made it his mission to lead by example for his advanced division, and has been a great advocate for the YMCA cause. Truitt is an ideal volunteer and we are lucky to have him as part of our YMCA family!

LAKEWEST YMCA - Dolores Raivzee-Bell

After leaving the Y as a staff member in 2005, Dolores Raivzee-Bell has continued to keep the Y and its mission in her heart and her daily life. Any time she gets the opportunity to share the Y’s story she doesn’t hesitate to let people know what we are doing in our community. Ms. Bell has been fortunate to work and partner with other organizations in which she has been adamant in creating relationships that produced funding to support the programs Lakewest provides for the West Dallas community. Ms. Bell is committed to the mission of the Y and has proven this over the past year through financial support as well as countless hours on the Annual Campaign that supports our programs and outreach. Ms. Bell is a current member of the Board of Management and demonstrates her dedication by continuing to connect us to resources through partnerships in the Dallas area. The Lakewest Y is proud to select Dolores Bell as our 2017 Volunteer of the Year for her commitment and passion for the Y.

MCKINNEY YMCA - Dr. Klyne Smith

Dr. Klyne Smith joined the McKinney Family YMCA Board of Management in 2014 and in January 2017 he became the board chair. During his first year as board chair, he created a committee structure that has led to improved board participation and engagement. He guided the development of vision, tasks, and accountability for each of the four committees. Under his leadership the board has grown from 7 members to 18 members and counting. Dr. Smith was instrumental in leading the board through a difficult staff transition. His dedication and support to the YMCA in the McKinney community is undeniable and appreciated. The McKinney YMCA family thanks Dr. Smith and his family, for the time and energy he gives to the Y.

MOODY FAMILY YMCA - John Reniger

John Reniger’s volunteer service with the YMCA ranges from his program involvement as a leader in the Y- Princess program to helping establish the initial girls’ volleyball program in 2005. As a board member, John chaired the Annual Campaign in 2010, making sure the Park Cities Y exceeded its goal. John is the current incoming board chair and continues to serve his community, fellow volunteers, and the Y staff in a most impactful way. John’s investment in the community is extensive, not only as a longtime volunteer and Board Member of the YMCA, but also serving in volunteer roles throughout the community. The Moody Family YMCA is pleased to honor a passionate volunteer such as John.

MOORLAND YMCA - Dolletta Cotton

Dolletta Cotton is an avid volunteer at the Moorland Y. She leads the effort to coordinate activities for the senior members. Recently, she coordinated the efforts for registering and serving breakfast and lunch to over 400 volunteers for our largest project of the year, the KaBoom Playground Build. She helped to engage over 200 seniors in the first ever Senior Showcase which pitted the seniors at the Moorland verses the Oak Cliff Y senior members. Ms. Cotton is a true ambassador for the Moorland Y. Her volunteer service ranges from presenting in front of multiple groups to the lead role in many events for the branch. The Moorland YMCA is proud of how Ms. Cotton graciously gives of her time to ensure the Y is well taken care of.

OAK CLIFF YMCA - Dorothy Creamer

Dorothy Creamer is the unsung hero of the Oak Cliff Y. Ms. Creamer’s green thumb keeps the Oak Cliff Y looking good. Regardless if it is a beautiful spring day or steamy August afternoon, Ms. Creamer trims the hedges and weeds the beds. She has created a beautiful flower bed that has brightened up the pool area. Ms. Creamer takes on tasks inside the branch ranging from mopping the fitness floor or cleaning out the multipurpose closet. Staff and members always know when Ms. Creamer has put her magic touch on a space. For Ms. Creamer and her magic, the members and staff of the Oak Cliff YMCA are eternally grateful.

PARK SOUTH YMCA - Cliff Wood

Cliff Wood emerged as an integral volunteer leader for Park South Y. During his first year as a board member, he and his family jumped in and helped wherever asked. even on weekends. During his second year, Cliff made the decision to actively seek the role of Campaign Chair for our Annual Campaign. With his hard work and leadership our 2017 campaign kick-off was the grandest we have experienced to date. He worked tirelessly to secure the venue and guest speaker, came with the videographer on every footage gathering trip, helped edit and script the narration, and provided us with an awareness piece that we still use today. Under his leadership, Park South raised more money by campaign kickoff than ever before, with more new donors than in the past. Cliff is a servant leader that not only speaks the good news of the gospel, he lives it out every day in spirit and in truth.

PLANO YMCA - Carinsa Gaston

Carinsa Gaston is everything that we could ask for in a volunteer. Her leadership, enthusiasm, communication, and tireless work ethic have been a blessing over the last few years. Carinsa has served as the chair for the Community Engagement Committee for three years and has made that a viable committee. With constant communication to the other committee members, the impact that has been made through member connections and relationships have been great. Carinsa stepped in to the role of Board Chair this past September and has continued her tireless spirit in this role. She will do anything in her power to make the Plano YMCA shine brightly. She continues to be a valuable piece of the Plano puzzle and is helping the Y to have the greatest impact on the Plano community. For this reason, among others, Carinsa Gaston is the Plano Family YMCA Volunteer of the year.

RICHARDSON YMCA - Bill Webb

Bill Webb is a fixture when it comes to YMCA Swimming. For as long we can remember, Bill has volunteered to help run swim meets in the summer time. Not only does Bill serve as chief volunteer official for the Richardson Rapids, but he is also a certified swim official trainer, serving year-round in this capacity by training new volunteers. Bill spends countless hours running and officiating swim meets and then goes above and beyond by recruiting and training new officials throughout the region. Bill served as head meet official several times at our YMCA Lone Star State Championship meet, leading a team of 20+ officials to successfully run this four-day event. Bill’s volunteerism sets a great example for his children who have become lifeguards, swim instructors and coaches at the Richardson YMCA. We are honored to recognize Bill Webb for the Sam G Winstead Volunteer of the Year award.

T. BOONE PICKENS YMCA - Amye Thompson-Hollins

Amye is a product of inner-city community service programs at the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Dallas and every Vacation Bible School program her mother could get her in! Boone Pickens Board of Management since 2015 and has served as the YMCA Campaign Chair in both 2017 and 2018. Amye is a great champion for the YMCA and its cause. She led the 2017 Annual Campaign to exceed goal. Her passion and enthusiasm for the mission of the Y has revolutionized T. Boone Pickens YMCA’s board. Her daughter, Ava learned to swim at the Y. One of Ava’s favorite activities with mom is spending time at the Y. The Y is blessed to have Amye’s talent, time, and treasure.

TOWN NORTH YMCA - Joe de la Cruz

Joe de la Cruz naturally progressed from being a great Town North YMCA member to a TNY ambassador, advocate, and incredible fund raiser. Joe arrives at the TNY at 5:30AM three weekday mornings and as the doors open at 7:00 on Saturdays. These are times when the Y is lightly staffed, so Joe becomes our eyes and ears. If there are concerns related to members’ Y experience Joe is the senior spokesperson. Truly an asset to our YMCA, Joe has volunteered to raise Annual Campaign funds for over 20 years and has connected about 200 donors to our cause. Joe attends all the TNY phone parties, report meetings and socials. In the 2017 Campaign he raised $16,116. To date in the 2018 Campaign, Joe has raised $16,551. Joe’s passion, wonderful personality and tenacity are fundamental to his success. The Town North YMCA is honored to recognize Joe de la Cruz as our 2017 Volunteer of the year.

WAXAHACHIE YMCA - David McSpadden

David McSpadden is the perfect example of a servant leader. His entire life has been one of developing things and more importantly, developing people. Recently, he placed his personal business on hold to champion the YMCA and the Miracle League of Ellis County. David has dedicated his first fruits to creating a special place for athletes with challenges from many spectrums. Through his efforts and the partnership with the Waxahachie YMCA, a baseball league was formed in the fall of 2017, and special athletes from in and around our community now have a chance to play baseball. Many of these athletes are a part of a team, for the first time in their lives. David has been an inspiration to hundreds of families and community leaders through his vision and leadership. David inspires everyone around him and we are thrilled to recognize him as our 2017 YMCA Sam Winstead Volunteer of the Year Award.

WHITE ROCK YMCA - Carlos Garcia

In his short time on the White Rock Y’s Board of Management, Carlos Garcia has made a tremendous impact. Carlos’s first introduction to the YMCA was through his daughter’s youth soccer team. Later, his family became members and he got involved in aquatics and Adventure Guides. After seeing the impact that the Y makes in the community and hearing about the wonderful work the Board was doing, Carlos did not hesitate to join in. Carlos went “all in” and became chair of the Programs Committee. Introducing the Reading Partners program, he and a group of volunteers partnered with Mount Auburn Elementary School to help increase literacy levels in children fourth grade and younger. Carlos’s passion for the Y has never wavered. “The Y makes you feel like anything is possible. It’s more than a gym. It’s a community and I am incredibly proud to know that I am a small part of the work that it does.”
