WWW.STTERESAKOLKATAPGH.ORG St. Monica and St. Augustine St. Monica prayed unceasingly, fasted, and wept for the conversion of her son, Augustine, from his wayward lifestyle. Through the trust in God and persistent prayer of his mother, St. Augustine converted and became one of the greatest bishops and theologians of the Church. What we know of St. Monica is in great part through the accounts that St. Augus-

tine gives of her in his Confessions. "It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels." St. Augustine

MASS OBLIGATION REINSTATED —We welcome back all the faithful to in-person participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Please note that as of August 6, Bishop Zubik has stated that all ministers of the Eucharist, ushers and greeters and servers must wear masks while engaging in their ministries, regardless of their vaccination status. Please visit www.diopitt.org for the most recent news or updates in the diocese.

PARISH VOLUNTEERS: SAFE ENVIRONMENT Thank you to those who have completed the newly re-quired Protecting God’s Children Maltreatment 3.2 In-cluding Vulnerable Adults training. There are still many volunteers who need to complete this free, on-line session to be compliant with the Diocesan Safe Environment re-quirements. If you are a Parish Volunteer in ANY ministry, please call the Safe Environment Office at 412-563-0858 to see if you are required to complete the training, or to learn how to access this training.

Come, Spirit! The presider at the Euchar ist can choose from among a number of different Eucharistic Prayers, all of which follow a similar pattern. Almost always, they begin with an epiclesis, a Greek word that means “invocation upon” or “calling over here.” At this moment in the prayer, the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gifts of bread and wine that we have brought to the altar: “Father, we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the body and blood of your Son” (Eucharistic Prayer III). The words of the prayer are accompanied by the ritual gesture of the laying on of hands, the ancient sign of the gift of the Spirit, which is also used in most sacramental cele-brations, from the rite of confirmation to the ordination of dea-cons, priests, and bishops. Liturgists sometimes call this first epiclesis the epiclesis of consecration. Later in the Eucharistic Prayer, there will be another epiclesis, the epiclesis of commun-ion, as the priest asks that the Holy Spirit be sent upon us to transform us. “Grant that we, who are nourished by his body and blood, may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ” (Eucharistic Prayer III).—Corinna Laughlin, ©J. S. Paluch co.

St. Rose was born in Lima, Peru in 1586. As a young girl she read about Catherine of Siena and became determined to imitate the great saint. Like St. Catherine she entered the Dominican Third Order and received profound graces in prayer. She endured various mortifications for the conversion of sinners and the native Peruvians. In Peru, her feast is celebrated on August 30. St.

Rose was canonized in 1671, the first saint born in the New World.

Let us allow ourselves to be "filled" with St Joseph's silence! In a world that is often too noisy, that encourages neither recollection nor listening to God's voice, we are in such deep need of it. Pope Benedict XVI, 18 December 2005
