Ben Brooks 1942-1945 Corporal USA 3rd Army - Service included Battle of the Bulge, Normandy beach on “D” Day, guarding General George Patton’s headquarters. - Locations: Ardennes, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Nazi Germany. - Best war memory: Personally meeting General Omar Bradley. Love Gaga, from your family John Earl South John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1941 to 1945 as an aircraft mechanic/tail gunner on a TBM Avenger. On Oct. 25th, 1944 he survived the sinking of his ship, USS St. Lo, an escort carrier, during the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines (the first U.S. surface vessel sunk by a Kamikaze attack). As a result of his actions, John was awarded the Navy Air Medal and Presidential Unit Citation, and in 1999 was placed on the U.S. Navy enlisted men’s honor roll. He re- enlisted into the Navy in 1956 and served two years in the Philippines. In 1958 he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at McDill AFB, Tampa, FL. In 1959 he was sent to McConnell AFB, Wichita, KS. In 1960 was sent to Fairchild AFB, Spokane, WA. In 1966 he was sent to Vietnam and served as a load master on a Caribou cargo transport delivering supplies to Special Forces camps throughout SE Asia. While in Vietnam John survived two plane crashes. Upon his return to Fairchild AFB he was deployed to Guam where he served until the end of the conflict in Vietnam. John served his country and family with courage and distinction and retired in 1972. He was honored by both the U.S. Navy and Air Force for his dedicated service. We lost John in 2005 as a result of his exposure to Agent Orange. John was a true hero in combat and life, and a positive, loving role model to all who knew him. STEPHEN ERTEL You battled back and it wasn’t easy. The Vet counselor said only 4% of all enrolled Veterans complete college! You continue to amaze us how you work hard at Concinnity Financial, as a full-time Eastern student, as a husband, as a Dad and pursuing God in your life. We are so thankful for you. Mom and Dad Ralph Sacco Ralph followed his two brothers and enlisted on the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served in 9 naval campaigns including 2 major campaigns. During one battle he survived a near miss on a gun #1, though wounded, he continued to do his job. He retired from business at the age of 84. He and his wife have been married for 69 years. Colonel Robert H. Ackerman, USAF It is a soul-stirring, proud moment receiving the flag from your Dad’s casket. Dad didn’t die in active duty, but he could have. He would have. He could have, flying countless patrols with Squadron 28 in Korea. He could have, flying the F86, F89J, F101 and F102. He was awarded a “Meritorious Achievement” medal for the skillful handling of his stricken jet: “The jet fighter was only 800 feet off the runway when the left engine of his F89J Scorpion blew up without warning. Ackerman decided to jettison his fuel and attempt an emergency landing rather than bail out and destroy the jet.” [Spokesman Review, May 1965] His big heart for people, his kindness, his standard for doing things right, his love for the Lord - all deeply impacted my heart. And though he didn’t die in active service to this country, he would have. In a heartbeat. Lt Col. Clarance A Howard Valedictorian of North Central High School, Class of 1937. He transferred from the Spokane National Guard as a 2nd Lt. to the new US Army Air Corps. He was a decorated Group Leader killed in action November 18, 1944 over Gey, Germany (Huertgen Forest/Battle of the Bulge) while flying a B-26 Martin Marauder. Hofmann served in the United States Army from December 1951 - February 1955. He served in Korea from 1951 - 1954 and when the Korean War ended, they sent him to Germany to finish out his tour of duty. He was stationed at Camp Roder outside of Munich, Germany. The Cold War was on between Russia and the United States and he was put on duty to help patrol the boarders between Russia and the United States. His prize medal was the Combat Infantry Badge. In Loving Memory of Jack M. Berger January 5, 1921 - October 15, 2004 Served in Army and Air Force and retiring in 1967. Member of the 82nd Airborne, jumping into Anzio, Italy during WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Met his beautiful French war bride, Huguette (91 yrs. young), in Nice, France and was married for 60 years. Air Force took him and his family to French Morocco for seven years and to Chateauroux, France for four years. Thank you daddy for your wonderful service to a wonderful country. William G. Hofmann served in the United States Army from December 1951 - February 1955. He served in Korea from 1951 - 1954 and when the Korean War ended, they sent him to Germany to finish out his tour of duty. He was stationed at Camp Roder outside of Munich, Germany. JD HANCOCK A graduate of Texax A & M, started out serving as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and was sent to the South Pacific. He was then sent to the European Theater where he was also attached to the British Army for one year and then back to the US Army in Europe. CSM Thomas E. WilliamsThomas Edward Williams was bornon October 18, 1932 in Antreville,South Carolina and escaped thepoverty and segregation of rural SCby enlisting in the United StatesArmy on April 12, 1948 at the ageof 15. He was regularly discountedbecause of his age, race, and smallsize (113 pounds soaking wet), andwas encouraged to drop out ofbasic training, but Thomas wasdetermined to prove the doubterswrong. By the age of 17 he waspromoted to Sergeant and activelytook part in the integration of Blackand White Army units afterPresident Harry S. Trumandesegregated the U.S. Military.

His career took him to Germanyduring the occupation, and to Koreaand Vietnam, amongst otherplaces. His final duty assignmentwas Senior Enlisted instructor andDepartment of Military Science'sSergeant Major in the ROTCprogram at Gonzaga University,where he trained hundreds ofstudents for the role of officer inthe United States Army. CSMWilliams retired from active duty inApril 1978 at the highest non-commissioned rank of CommandSergeant Major after thirty years ofservice. He served an additionaltwenty years as the Department ofMilitary Science's CivilianPersonnel Technician at GonzagaUniversity, retiring for the secondtime in 1998, completing 50 yearsof Service to his country.

Thomas was awarded theDistinguished Citizen Medal by theDaughters of the AmericanRevolution, the FreedomFoundation's Freedom Award, aDoctor of Laws Degree, HonorisCausa from Gonzaga University,and the Department of MilitaryScience at Gonzaga established theCSM Thomas E. WilliamsLeadership Excellence Award, forthe cadet who best exemplifies theArmy values of Loyalty, Duty,Respect, Selfless Service, Honor,Integrity, and Personal Courage.Additionally, CSM Williams receivednumerous awards andcommendations throughout hismilitary career including the Legionof Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, theArmy Commendation Medal (20LC),and the Combat InfantrymanBadge. He was also a very proudmember of Veterans of UnderageMilitary Service (VUMS).

Frank C. WatsonColonel, USAF (Ret)

Frank grew up in rural Missouri. In1960 he received a Congressionalappointment to the United StatesMilitary Academy. Upon graduationfrom West Point in 1964, hereceived a Bachelor of Science andwas commissioned in the U.S. AirForce. He was trained as aNavigator and flew in KC 135Tankers and in 1970 he served inVietNam in AC 119 Gunships. Hereceived a Master of LogisticsManagement at the Air ForceInstitute of Technology in Ohio. ColWatson graduated from the ArmedForces Staff College at Norfolk, VA,and Air War College at Maxwell AFB,AL. He received the Legion of Merit,the Distinguished Flying Cross andthe Meritorious Service Medal withone bronze oak leaf cluster. ColWatson served as commander ofvarious units/squadrons and washonored to be selected as the firstnavigator to command a flyingsquadron; the 92nd Air RefuelingSquadron at Fairchild AFB, WA. In1986 Col Watson retired from MinotAFB, ND, as the Base Commander.Frank and wife, Billie, have twochildren, Renee' and Eric, and fourgrandchildren.

Joe PolelloOur Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Joe served in the 6thMarine Division during WWII,received a Purple Heart and carriesthat bullet to this day. He was withthe 3rd Marine Brigade in Tsingtao,China where his job was to returnall Japanese Soldiers to their homeport.Joe was recalled by the MarineCorps to serve during the KoreanConflict.After that he served in the 84thFighter Squadron FAFB where heretired after 20 years. Joe is a Lifetime member, Military Order of thePurple Heart and a member of theMarine Corps League, SpokaneChapter.Joe worked for Spokane CountyHealth District retiring after 34years.Joe was also known as the "Voice"of the Fair, he was Superintendentof Public Relations and Ticket Salesfor 51 years.Recently Joe received a letter fromPresident Obama, thanking him fora photograph and his sacrificesduring war time and his truemeaning of Patriotism.

A Daughter's Veteran's DaySalute! CMSGT Charles W.Simpson is a man of integrity andhonor. He is my HERO, and mostimportantly, my loving Dad. Hebegan his career in the USAF atFairchild A.F.B., Washington. He puthis life on hold to serve in theVietnam war for three years. MyDad was called upon to provideextraordinary sacrifice in order forAmericans to pursue life, liberty,and freedom. He is a recipient of aBronze Star. After 24 years ofservice, CMSGT Simpson retiredfrom Eielson A.F.B. Alaska and nowresides in Spokane Valley with hisfamily.

Donald J McKenna - US Navy- 1942-1946 A farm boy fromrural Iowa proudly served hiscountry as a ship's cook in the USNavy during WWII. After completingbasic training at Great Lakes NavalStation, Don served in the PacificTheater aboard the tanker ship USSEscambia and aircraft carrier USSVella Gulf, and was honorablydischarged in March of 1946.

A true hero to both hiscountry and his family.

Jimmy Michael Callaghanwas drafted from San Franciscointo military service in 1968 andserved with the 1st Air Calvary inVietnam where he was wounded inaction and received 4 PurpleHearts. He returned home adisabled veteran and to theprotests, scorn and anger of acountry in turmoil. A husband,father, grandfather, friend andpatriot - our American Hero.
