PAGE EIGHT_________Thursday, December 5, 2013__________GREENE COUNTY HERALD GCHS soccer teams blast Laurel in first games after break By RUSSELL TURNER Herald Staff The Greene County High School soccer teams came back from Thanksgiving break on a mission and the Laurel Tornados paid the price, as the Cats and Lady Cats pummeled their hosts in non- region action. Sophomore Olivia Courtney posted a season high four goals to pace the Lady Cats in a 9-1 win. Classmates Mellie Snyder and Abbi Henderson each added two goals. Senior Reagan Nicholson, who has accepted an invitation to play soccer under scholarship at JCJC next season, scored on a free kick attempt. No stats were available on assists. The Lady Cats played well on defense to help goalie Mary Grace Turner, who recorded four saves and gave up just one goal. With the win, the Lady Cats improved to 2-2 on the year. On the boys’ side, senior Blaine Gunther was the star as he led GCHS to a 6-2 win. Gunther had a ‘hat trick’ with three goals and also added an assist. Senior Kyle Courtney and sophomore Jackson Turner had a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore Zack Mathis topped off one of his better all-around games with a nice goal on a crossing shot from about 30 yards out. Jacob Casey added an assist. Defensively, GCHS played well, with Drake McCalip, Dalton Ezelle, Josh Bradley and Zach Dale among those helping goal keeper Patrick Noblitt pro- tect the lead. With the win, GCHS improved to 4-1 on the season. Up next, GCHS will hit the road again this Friday, this time for a trip to Carriere to take on Pearl River Central in non- region varsity action. Lots of action on tap this week for county hoops fans By RUSSELL TURNER Herald Staff Area basketball fans wanting to catch a little hoops action this week have multiple options. Two of the county’s junior high schools are competing in their conference tournament this week at Sand Hill. The Sand Hill Lady Bucks will take on the winner of the McLain – Richton matchup in the finals Thursday at 6 p.m. The Lady Rams played the Lady Rebels earlier in the week, but results were not available. The McLain and Sand Hill boys’ teams faced each other in the opening round, with the winner set to take on Richton in the tourney finals Thursday at 7 p.m. at Sand Hill. The LJHS Bears will play hosts to Dixie on Thursday with the Lady Bears tipping things off at 5 p.m. Boys’ action will follow immediately afterward. The Bears and Bucks will then play a daytime matchup on Monday (Dec. 9), with the girls tipping off the cross-county rivalry at noon in the Leakesville gym. The boys’ game will follow. They will repeat that schedule Thursday with two mid-day games on the Sand Hill campus. Greene County fans will have to travel to catch their beloved Wildcats in action, but only to Richton, as the Cats and Lady Cats are competing in the Richton Rotary Tournament, beginning Thursday. The Lady Cats will tip things off at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Perry Central, with the boys match- ing up with the Bulldogs imme- diately afterward. The two teams will play Richton on Friday with the girls getting underway at 7 p.m., followed by the boys’ game. They play West Jones Saturday, begin- ning with the girls’ game at 4:30 p.m. Bears remain unbeaten with sweep of Buckatunna The LJHS Bears improved to 4-0 and took a decisive lead in conference play on Monday when they swept visiting Buckatunna in boys’ and girls’ action. The Lady Bears rolled to a 33- 20 win over the Lady Bucs thanks to a 20-point, 10-steal performance by Beyonce Higgins. McKay Lee Bray fol- lowed with seven points, while Karleah Malone (2 pts., 5 rebounds), Lajala Hardy (2 pts., 2 rebounds) and Destiny Blackston (2 pts.) were all solid for LJHS. “We struggled in the first half with foul trouble and some mis- takes causing problems,” Coach Clara Burley said. “But, we were able to overcome that and posted a great second half. That led to a 20-point lead and an opportunity for a lot of play- ers to play.” In boys’ action, Jonas Burley and Derrick Grice each scored in double figures to lead LJHS to a 45-22 win over the Bucs. Burley led the team with 13 points, three rebounds and four assists, while Grice had 11 points and four steals. Quentralis Washam netted nine points and had two steals, while Larue Weaver continued his solid play with six points and seven rebounds. Demeeko Lockhart had three points for the Bears, while Austin Averette was a beast on the boards with ten rebounds. “We played a much smoother game this go-around against Buckatunna,” Coach Carl Woullard said. “Our defense was solid and our offense was improved with balanced scor- ing from the whole team.”
