Dear Friends,

Several experts have dubbed this “The Year of the Teen,” with teenagers taking leadership roles in addressing some of society’s most pressing issues. As you can imagine, BBYO leaders across the globe are doing their part, building our Movement as they focus their collective power on efforts of tikkun olam—repairing our world.

Appropriately, “Our Turn” was the theme for the 2019 school year selected by BBYO members. When unthinkable events rocked Pittsburgh and Poway this year, BBYO teens stepped up to support one another without missing a beat. Chapters internationally reached out to their Jewish peers—in many cases, to close friends made through BBYO experiences—with calls for action, support, and prayers. After the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh, when teens gathered for a community Havdallah, they shared that “it is ‘Our Turn’ to ensure that every community is respected and safe to thrive. Our response to acts of anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, Islamophobia, to all forms of discrimination, will be with action.”

And while the BBYO community is quick to unite in times of trouble, we are always ready to celebrate our moments of triumph. At International Convention in Denver this year, BBYO received a historic $25 million endowment gift from Ted and Harriette Perlman in honor and memory of Ted’s mother and BBG founder, Anita M. Perlman. This gift will help propel our Movement forward and support new efforts to mobilize BBG alumnae to take on positions of leadership in their communities through mentorship, training, and community building.

Overall, BBYO saw record growth through expansion beyond North America. With over 50 new chapters this year, BBYO now has a presence in 51 countries and includes over 33,000 teen members. Our vision for a globally connected community of young Jews inspired by teen leadership, inclusivity, Israel, and Jewish learning is more real than ever before.

We are grateful to our donors and partner organizations for investing in Jewish teens through BBYO, and for supporting our efforts to develop resilient, bold, and impactful young leaders around the world. At the heart of the BBYO Movement, immersive weekend experiences bring teens together to strengthen communities, grow as leaders, and explore their identities. A renewed approach to Jewish enrichment at conventions provides teens with the opportunity to hear from renowned speakers and exemplars of Jewish life; build teen-led programming guided by Jewish educational consultants; and elevate Shabbat experiences and other Jewish moments with the support of song leaders.

The first-ever Latin American Staff Conference took place this fall in Bogota, Colombia. Staff from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, the U.S., and Venezuela came together to learn how to mobilize their communities, support teen leaders, and build strong partnerships.

In November, a record 450 BBYO delegates representing 15 countries traveled to Ukraine for the Active Jewish Teens conference, strengthening connections with Jewish teen leaders in the Former Soviet Union.

CREATING CHANGE TOGETHER

ACTION AND ADVOCACY Twenty Alephs and BBGs in Connecticut Valley

Region lobbied in their State Capitol in support of Bill 452, mandating Holocaust and genocide education

in Connecticut schools. Together, these teens read testimonies to the Connecticut Education Committee

and urged them to pass this piece of legislation.In 2019, more BBYO members than ever came together to improve their communities, address causes they care about, and take a stand on critical issues.

PARTNERS AGAINST PREJUDICE In conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League’s One Day

Against Hate Campaign, over 200 teens in Gold Coast Regionpledged to end usage of the word “hate.” They hosted a

fundraiser for the ADL, sponsoring a lane at a community “Strike Out the Hate” bowling event where 30 BBYO members volunteered.

LOBBYING FOR INCLUSION BBYO teens attended Jewish Disability

Advocacy Day, joining more than 50 Jewish organizations to champion

disability and inclusion issues on behalf of the Jewish community.

J-SERVE 2019: SERVING COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SERVICE This year’s J-Serve was the largest in BBYO history, with a record-breaking

15,500+ teens participating in nearly 30 countries. For the first time ever, J-Serve events reached far beyond traditional hands-on service as teen

leaders were encouraged to plan impactful programming around their communities’ unique needs.

J-Serve expanded this year to include direct service as well as advocacy training,

philanthropic events, community rallies, first responder trainings, charity runs, dance

marathon fundraisers, workshops, and more.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION:

OUR TURNFebruary 2019 saw a record turnout at IC, the largest gathering of Jewish teen leaders in the world. Nearly 3,000 teens headed to Denver for five days of hands-on advocacy and service, leadership training, experiential learning, and celebration of our growing BBYO community.

The Jewish Learning Lab, reimagined as J-Lab, was managed by a team of 12 teens and hosted more than 1,500 teens throughout IC. J-Lab offered a variety of teen-led prayer services and more than 20 pop-up sessions to explore Judaism interactively.
