LEGENDS

How the guitar was born.

Hilario was a lonely person and he didn’t worry about it because he was

a young “gaucho” who had a home, a horse and some sheep. He was

happy to ride his horse around his vast field which he knew very well.

But one day he realized he was bored so things started to happen. He

hated silence so he looked for the sound of the streams or the singing of

the birds.

One rainy day he went to sleep but he couldn’t close an eye because of

the thunders and the lightening. When he finally fell asleep we

dreamed with a soft and melodic voice of the rain. So, when he woke up

he realized he needed a partner. As a result, Hilario brush his hair and

he dressed himself with his best clothes to go to the town.

After walking around the town he finally found the sweet voice he heard in his dream. It

belonged to a beautiful , young girl who later became his faithful and loyal wife.

Everything was happiness until misfortune came the day Amuray, the chief of an Indian

tribe, also fell in love with this Creole girl. The Indian waited for the opportunity to

seduce Rosa but when she rejected him, the chief Indian took her as a prisoner.

When Hilario came back to his house he found a mess, blood on the floor and his wife

missing. Then, he heard a scream so he started galloping fast to find his beloved wife.

The chase was short, but the fighting was fierce. Seeing Rosa wound, Hilario dag his

knife into Amuray’s stomach and he released Rosa, who finally died in his home.

Hilario, embraced the body, and called his beloved with endless words she had taught

him. He cried with all the grief as night fell. In the end, the gaucho fell asleep under the

stars with the head on the dead body of his wife.

He woke up confused as he listened to a strange melody. When he looked at his body he

noticed that he was no longer hugging his wife but a wooden box shaped like a woman.

The Legend of the “Ceibo”

On the banks of Parana, lived an ugly indian girl called Anahi.

She wasn’t pretty, but in the evenings she delighted all the

people of his Guarani tribe with songs inspired by their gods and

love for the land that they owned. But one day the invaders

arrived and destroyed all the lands. Anahí was taken captive

along with other Indians. She spent many days crying and many

nights awake, until one day the little Indian girl managed to

escape while his guard fell asleep. However, the guard woke up,

so she plunged a knife into his chest and ran quickly to the

jungle. Later, the other Spanish guards chased poor Anahí, who

at the time, was hit by the conquerors.

These, in revenge for the death of the guardian,

punished her with death at the stake. They tied her to

a tree and started the fire, which seemed unwilling to

extend its flames towards the Indian girl, who without

murmuring word, suffered in silence. And when the

fire began to rise, Anahí started to sing as she was

turned into a tree. The next morning, the soldiers

found a beautiful green tree with bright leaves velvety

red flowers, which was shown in all its glory as the

symbol of courage and strength to suffering.

The roast is a cooking technique in which food (usually beef

cuts) are exposed to heat from fire or coals placed in specific

places called “parrillas” in order to cook slowly. This cooking

technique also works with other types of meat: pork, lamb,

goat, fish, chicken, shrimp and sausage varieties. Men often

prefers to use coal or wood to make the fire, however cooking

with gas grills is highly efficient.

It is a tradition in our country to get together during the

weekends to eat an ASADO with friends and family. In

general, the meat is accompanied with salads or french fries.

And in some cases, people eat a “picada” before the meat:

pieces of cheese, ham, olives, salami bread among others.

The music of Argentina is internationally known as tango,

which developed mainly in the city of Buenos Aires and

surrounding areas. It is a romantic dance where the boy leads

the girl in sensual movements.

In the provinces people dance folk music. At schools, we

dance traditional dances like foklore to celebrate our National

days.

Classical music and opera has ample space at Teatro Colon in

Buenos Aires, with famous composers and performers.

Other musical styles are listened in Argentina like reggae,

electronic music, cumbia, punk, heavy metal, among others.
