Our Town: Images of Woodstock

Our Town: Images of Woodstock highlights the significant holdings in the WAAM’s Permanent Collection of imagery that depicts Woodstock and its environs along with supplemented works from private collections. Artists’ studio interiors, village architecture, and scenic locales such as Cooper Lake and Overlook Mountain are represented in a diverse selection of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs.

There are images that depict specific locales and those that provide classic images of Woodstock and the surrounding area. Marianne Appel’s gouache on board titled, Maverick House, c. 1940, is a charming rendition of a simple house on the Maverick colony during the winter season with smoke flowing from the chimney and stacks of wood surrounding the home. The winter season is also represented in

a marvelous snow scene of the village green in Julia Leaycraft’s Village in Winter (Woodstock) - a bustling scene of cars and town folk navigating the snow-filled streets of the village.

A featured work from WAAM’s Permanent Collection is Earle B. Winslow’s oil painting, The Woodstock Bus, 1921, that depicts the backside of artist Wilna Hervey as she boards the quaint town taxi. In his biography Living Large, on the artist and her companion Nan Mason, Joseph P. Eckhardt likens the image to scenes of the Powerful Katrinka (portrayed by Wilna Hervey) boarding the Toonerville Trolley, filmed the same year.

The artist Hermon More (1887-1968) and Alexander Brook (1898-1980) were regular painting buddies and the exhibition includes a wonderful representation of the same vista painted by each artist. The paintings depict the view from the ridge of More’s home on the slopes of Ohayo Mountain by two artists who often worked side by side.

Several prints and drawings in the exhibition reflect the convivial community of the artists who lived and worked in Woodstock in the early decades of the 20th century as in Peggy Bacon’s Clams and Clodhoppers, dated 1933, Arnold Blanch’s print of the 1920s, Interior Scene with Lucile at Piano and Eugenie Gershoy’s, Maverick Sketch Class, c. 1935. The artist’s studio was also a popular theme of many Woodstock artists and Maverick Studio, 1931 by Eugene Ludins is a marvelous example of an intimate and personal interior and having recently been conserved, shows off Ludins’ lively brushwork and bright palette.

Depictions of Woodstock, both real and the imagined, coexist in the exhibition and several works provide an imaginative look at our town, such as John McClellan’s lithograph, Woodstock Picnic, with its fantastically exaggerated and evocative landscape. Similarly, in Philip

EXHIBITION CHECKLIST(Continued on Back)

Guston’s ink on paper, Ref’s Back Porch, a surrealist tangle of debris suggests the detritus of the artist Anton Refregier’s back porch.

The natural beauty of Woodstock, its forests, swimming holes and lakes, were not only popular recreational locales but also the subject of many works represented in the WAAM’s Permanent Collection. Cooper Lake, by Neil Ives, offers a majestic view of this much painted and photographed landmark. Austin Mecklem’s, Vacation [Sawkill Creek, Woodstock] captures the natural and pristine beauty of one of the town’s many swimming holes. A more intimate view of this experience is found in Harvey Emrich’s small painting of a woman resting atop a boulder in Summer Haven, Woodstock and in the two black and white photographs of bathers by Yasuo Kuniyoshi. One of the bathers is identified as the artist Rosella Hartman.

I hope Our Town: Images of Woodstock offers a reverie into the many fond locales of Woodstock and the many ways in which the members of this community have enjoyed and embraced this beloved town.
