Walls Repeat Conversations. It is an architectural triumph to

design and c on st ru ct a b ui ld in gwhose acoustic prope rt ie s a re pe rfect, whose walls receive and returnth e voice of speaker or s inger withabsolute accuracy. Everyone recalls the freaks of acous ti cs bywhich a person sitting atone end ofa curving bench may hear distinctlythe voice of another some distanceaway. History has a number of instances where this unknown qualityin a r oom has revealed many a secret. "Whispering Galleries" and"Halls of Echoes" were fairly common b ef or e t he law of acousticswas understood.Al l t hi s is t o lead up to the subject that the library, now before thewalls ar e completely furnished, hasan echoing quality, and even voiceswhich are low and quiet sometimesare repea ted iq the fa r corners of

the room. While th is ma y havesome disadvantages i t i s frequentlyin this' way t ha t p le as an t compliments on the building, on the collect ion of books , on the service maintained by t he s ta ff of volunteerworkers, has been brought to theattention of those interes ted in thework, and constructive criticisms aswell.A prominent resident of t he bor gh whose business had kept himaway from town since the openingof th e b ui ld in g, o n h is f ir st v isi tstood just inside the door, held thereby his amazement a t the cha rm andeffident appearance of the room,.and expressed himse!f in no uncertain tones as proud, indeed, of suchan institution, and th e echo carriedhis words toal l corners of the roomA frequent reader returning froma vacation voiced her wonde r thatthe l ib ra ry had been able to buy a llnew books, in addition t o t he equipment and could hardly believe it,when t ol d t ha t the books were thes ame excep t for a few additions, but that they h ad t ak en o n a newglow with the new furniture.
