In an interesting article I read recently, Victoria Prooday (Occupational Therapist) argues that children today are in a devastating emotional state. She has seen a decline in childrens social, emotional, and academic functioning, as well as a sharp increase in learning disabilities and other diagnoses. She claims that most come to school emotionally unavailable for learning. There are many factors in our modern lifestyle that contribute to this. 1. Kids Get Everything They Want When They Want It The ability to delay gratification is one of the key factors for future success. We have the best intentions — to make our child happy — but unfortunately, we make them happy at the moment but miserable in the long term. To be able to delay gratification means to be able to function under stress. Our children are gradually becoming less equipped to deal with even minor stressors, which eventually become huge obstacles to their success in life. 2. Limited Social Interaction We are all busy, so we give our children digital gadgets and make them busytoo. Kids used to play outside, where, in unstructured natural environments, they learned and practiced their social skills. Unfortunately, technology has often replaced the outdoor time. Also, technology has made the parents less available to socially interact with their child. 3. Endless Fun Why arent children helping us in the kitchen or with laundry? Why dont they tidy up their toys? We have created an artificial fun world for our children. There are no dull moments. The moment it becomes quiet, we run to entertain them again, because otherwise, we feel that we are not doing our parenting duty. 4. Kids & Technology Using technology as a Free babysitting serviceis, in fact, not free at all. The payment is waiting for you just around the corner. We pay with our kidsnervous systems, with their attention, and with their ability to delay gratification. After hours of virtual reality, processing information in a classroom becomes increasingly challenging for our kids because their brains are getting used to the high levels of stimulation that video games provide. The inability to process lower levels of stimulation leaves kids vulnerable to academic challenges. Technology also disconnects us emotionally from our children and our families. 5. Kids Rule The World My son doesnt like vegetables.” “She doesnt like going to bed early.” “He doesnt like to eat breakfast.Since when do children dictate to us how to parent them? If we leave it all up to them, all they are going to do is eat macaroni and cheese and bagels with cream cheese, watch TV, play on their tablets, and never go to bed. By failing to provide boundaries and expectations, we send them the wrong message. Children learn they can do what they want and not do what they dont want. Our children know very well what they want, but have a very hard time doing the work that is necessary to achieve that goal. In trying to be the best parents we can by making our kids happyin the short term, we are letting them down. In next weeks Pindari Post, I will share some things you can do to promote your child s healthy brain development so that s/he can function successfully across social, emotional, and academic domains. Why are Kids “Impatient, Bored, Friendless, and Entitled”? In an interesting article I read recently, Victoria Prooday (Occupational Therapist) argues that children today are in a devastating emotional state. She has seen a decline in children’s social, emotional, and academic functioning, as well as a sharp increase in learning disabilities and other diagnoses.

2. Limited Social Interaction We are all busy, so we give our children digital gadgets and make them “busy” too. Kids used to play outside, where, in unstructured natural environments, they learned and practiced their social skills. Unfortunately, technology has often replaced the outdoor time. Also, technology has made the parents less available to socially interact with their child.

3. Endless Fun Why aren’t children helping us in the kitchen or with laundry? Why don’t they tidy up their toys? We have created an artificial fun world for our children. There are no dull moments. The moment it becomes quiet, we run to entertain them again, because otherwise, we feel that we are not doing our parenting duty.

4. Kids & Technology Using technology as a “Free babysitting service” is, in fact, not free at all. The payment is waiting for you just around the corner. We pay with our kids’ nervous systems, with their attention, and with their ability to delay gratification.

5. Kids Rule The World “My son doesn’t like vegetables.” “She doesn’t like going to bed early.” “He doesn’t like to eat breakfast.” Since when do children dictate to us how to parent them? If we leave it all up to them, all they are going to do is eat macaroni and cheese and bagels with cream cheese, watch TV, play on their tablets, and never go to bed. By failing to provide boundaries and expectations, we send them the wrong message. Children learn they can do what they want and not do what they don’t want. Our children know very well what they want, but have a very hard time doing the work that is necessary to achieve that goal.

In trying to be the best parents we can by “making our kids happy” in the short term, we are letting them down. In next week’s Pindari Post, I will share some things you can do to promote your child’s healthy brain development so that s/he can function successfully across social, emotional, and academic domains.

- ArtSpace - Year 6

Visual Arts in Year 6 has been very busy. We started with scratch Art Masks made ready for the whole school Carnevale later this term. We then moved into Artwork inspired by a famous artist. Students got to select one piece of artwork from different artists and different movements of Art. The students spent time researching about their artist and artwork, exploring many different materials and different techniques before they started to create their own artwork. Materials students got to explore were acrylic paint, water paints, water paint pencils, charcoal, textas, pencils, fine liners, oil pastels and chalk. Please check out their work displayed in the hallway outside the Art Room. We will finish with a unit on Clay.

Quote of the week: If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. - Unknown….

SAME-DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES Contact details There are times when we will need to contact you, including on the day if your child is absent and you haven’t informed the school as to

why. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 9436 8866 or [email protected] so we can update our records. Please include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers,

email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details or your circumstances change.

Notify the school of your child’s absence

Protecting the safety and well-being of children through the reporting and monitoring of absenteeism is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools. Please remember to log your child’s absence using our school’s IT platform Compass School Manager https://millparkhtsps-vic.compass.education/ early in the morning if your child is going to be away or late for school so your child’s absence can be recorded correctly or call the school on 9436 8866. Forgotten your Compass password? Ring the school office on 9436 8866 for assistance.

Same-day notification of unexplained student absences

Our school will SMS/text you at 10.00am on the day if a student is not at school and you haven’t notified the school as to why. If you are notified by the school that your child is away without a reason, please contact us as soon as possible by logging in to Compass https://millparkhtsps-vic.compass.education/ or responding to the text you received to let us know where your child is. If we cannot reach you because we don’t have your correct contact details (i.e.: message notification fail, disconnected number), then we

where

possible, please inform us in advance of upcoming absences, e.g. family holidays. You can do this on Compass in advance. Our school uses SMS/text to contact parents/carers at 10.00am on the day of an unexplained student absence. This SMS/text comes from our Compass system and is signed MPHPS for Mill Park Heights Primary School.

New Attendance Requirements If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence, by logging in to Compass https://millparkhtsps-vic.compass.education/ or call the school on 9436 8866. Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind. Forgotten your Compass password? Ring the school office on 9436 8866 for assistance.
