Transport News
Victorian College for the Deaf works closely with the Department of Education’s Student
Transport Unit to provide an accessible mode of transport for our students to travel to
and from school. Under the Department of Education’s Students with Disabilities
Transport Program, students at VCD could be eligible for:
Access to a free myki pass for travelling to and from school via public transport
Funding to support families with petrol costs if the student is being driven to school
Access to a group taxi that transports the student from a neutral pick up location
(ie. Bus stop) to school
Taxis
If a family wishes to apply for access to the Department’s taxi service, an application will
need to be made by the school on behalf of the family. A suitable neutral pick up
location will be provided by the taxi company. When the student reaches secondary
school, they will start being encouraged to transition off the taxi service and into public
transport travel with assistance from VCD’s ‘travel training’ program.
Supervisors
Recently students who access the taxi service received a letter regarding supervisors.
Please fill out the form and return to school at your earliest convenience.
If a student moves address at any time during their enrolment at VCD, the taxi applica-
tion process will need to start again. The application process can take up to four weeks
to complete, so it is imperative that the school receives as much notice as possible of
any changes that need to be made.
Senior News
We are excited to share with you some changes to our VCE Auslan pro-
gram for next year.
VCE Auslan Units 1 + 2 and Units 3 + 4 will be taught at VCD on Monday
afternoons 4:30pm—7:30pm throughout each school term. The classes
will consist of VCD students as well as Deaf and hearing students from
other schools wanting to learn VCE Auslan.
We believe this will create a rich learning opportunity for our students to
engage with a wider student population with common interests and
passions.
The additional bonus will be more supervised private study time at
school. This will enable VCD students to book one-on-one appoint-
ments with their teachers and career coordinator throughout the week
when they would normally have had a timetabled Auslan class.
If you have any questions about the changes, please don’t hesitate to
contact the College.
Sunsmart News
As we move into warmer weather, we are encouraging all students
to wear a hat when playing outdoors. Students are welcome to
wear either a VCD hat or a hat from home. We will also have sun-
screen available in all classrooms for students to use.
