Excellence, Opportunity and Success
We would like to respectfully acknowledge the Elders past and present of the Wijabul Wiyabal people and other peoples of Bundjalung Nation.
We acknowledge that they are the first peoples of this land on which our school stands.
On Friday afternoon last week we all joined together in the hall to watch our talented students perform for us. We were
entertained by a variety of items including dancing, singing, drama and listened to some great music. All the students
had practiced hard and did a great job. The music and songs were great choices and costumes were fantastic. It takes
bravery to overcome nerves to perform in front of an audience and all the students were amazing. Well done!!!

A Block and B Block
As you know, we have had A block and upstairs B-Block closed last week after discovery of floor tiles containing asbestos. Air testing was conducted by a hygienist on Thursday, and the results we received Friday indicate that the buildings are safe to occupy. We can now move back into the blocks. The exception is 5/6D's classroom. Due to damage to floorboards, this room will remain unoccupied until work has been completed to remedy the problem. I will continue to liaise with our maintenance contractors to ensure that our classrooms remain safe learning environments for our students. I thank staff and students for their patience and flexibility. As always, please contact me if you require further information. Library Stocktake Next week the Library stocktake will be undertaken. There will be no library borrowing this week and all books are to be returned by this Friday. Congratulations Caelin Yesterday Caelin B’s outstanding achievements in sport were recognised at the North Coast Regional Aboriginal awards. I would like to congratulate Caelin on his successes this year, and wish him well in high school. Martin Gill Principal
Senior Choir
The choir will be preparing their audition DVD to apply for the Primary Choral Festival to be held at the Sydney Opera
House next year. The students have been preparing a piece titled ‘Corner Of The Sky’. The results of the audition will be
released early next year.
Music Lessons
Please keep in mind that students moving on to high school will be returning school instruments before the end of the year
so there will be flutes, clarinets, saxophones and trumpets available for students to start learning in the new year.
Information and permission notes are available at the front office. Music education is so valuable and the skills acquired
assist in all areas of education. Please contact Mrs Cole if you require advice on instrument preferences or any information
on the school music/band program.

Lismore Public School P&C Christmas Raffle 2014
Another year is almost over and the School’s Christmas Carols are just about here. This year has been another busy one
and the P&C is always overwhelmed with the donations and generosity of our families and the community, so again the
P&C has decided to purchase prizes for the Christmas Raffle rather than ask families for donations. We have also had
some extremely kind donations from local businesses and a patchwork quilt made and donated, all of which will make our
combined raffle prize total over $2000. Tickets are $2 each and each book contains 10 tickets.
When selling tickets please write purchaser’s name and phone number on tickets. All winners not present at the
Christmas Carol night will be contacted by phone to organise collection of their prize.
Please return all sold raffle tickets with money and any unsold tickets to school by Monday 1st December 2014.
Tickets and money can be dropped into the P&C letter box in the front foyer.
Extra books can be collected from the front office if required.
The P&C would like to thank all families for their support during the year and
wish everyone a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.
We are looking forward to a fantastic 2015.
The P&C meets on the 2nd
Wednesday of each month @ 6pm
during school terms, all parents and care givers are welcome to
attend. See you at the carols on Thursday 4th December.
Thanks LPS P&C

What are mental health risk factors?
The idea that certain risk factors make it more likely that children will experience poor mental health is based on research
findings that show how frequently, and under what conditions, children’s mental health difficulties occur. Knowing what
kinds of factors put children at risk of mental health difficulties helps health experts plan and develop the kinds of support
and resources needed to be able to intervene early to improve children’s mental health. It also helps to guide efforts to
prevent mental health problems developing. The following link shows a table of examples of
risk factors (identified by researchers and mental health professionals) that often contribute to
the development of mental health difficulties in children. It is important to note that the
presence of a risk factor does not mean that an individual child will necessarily develop a
mental health difficulty.

Inadequate sleep may be linked to a sluggish metabolism!
Mounting evidence points to poor sleep resulting in a sluggish metabolism,
and poor sleep is a risk factor for becoming overweight!
The recommendations for sleep are:
Preschool (3 – 5 years) 11- 13 hours/ night
School (5 – 12 years) 9 – 11 hours/a night
Teens (12 – 18 years) 8.5 – 9.5 hours/ night
Some hints for a healthy sleep:
• Consistency: going to bed and rising at a regular time (be firm)
• having a 30 – 60 minute quiet time before bed; this might include a bath or shower, pyjamas, a drink, cleaning teeth,
a toilet visit, a bedtime story, a goodnight kiss and then lights out as parents leave the bedroom.
• No screens (TV, phones or game consoles) in the bedroom
