PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,Another busy week has flown by as we work towards the end of term. Here’s the action that was had in Week 9…

Election Day BBQ Congratulations to the P & C Music Committee for their very successful Election Day sausage sizzle and cake sale. Many parents gave generously of their time to support the fundraising efforts of our Music Committee, with just over $1500.00 being raised. Congratulations to Mrs Martha MacLaurin-Wood and Mrs Anna Davis who coordinated the event, which was a clear winner for the Elanora community.

Life Skills K-2 Parent DayMonday and Tuesday were certainly times to relax and be mindful as many parents took the opportunity to join their child’s Life Skills lesson. Stacy, our Life Skills teacher, commented that Elanora had the highest number of parents attending the sessions from the many schools she works in - a clear indication of the strong parent support of wellbeing programs at our school. If you attended the sessions, we would love to hear your feedback regarding the program by completing this very short survey – your feedback in invaluable in helping us to determine our program offerings for 2018. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DJN3PJJ

Move-A ThonThe playground was a hive of activity on Wednesday morning as our students participated in the annual Move-A Thon. This outstanding event promotes the importance of fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle and I would like to thank Mrs

Jessica Mobbs, Mrs Kerrilyn O’Reilly and Miss Khiara Kengike for their excellent coordination of this K-6 event. Funds raised through the event will be utilised to improve sporting initiatives for our students.

Navy Band VisitOur students were also entertained by the fabulous Navy Band on Thursday afternoon, in a foot-tapping precursor to our annual band recruitment program. Our thanks to Mrs Bec Heather, our wonderful Senior Band Conductor, for organising this musical event for all students K-6.

Next week is certainly action packed, so please make sure you check the newsletter and calendar for all the info you need.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Extravaganza on Monday night – it is going to be amazing!

Eat-A- RainbowKeeping with the focus on healthy habits, we all ate a rainbow on Thursday and Friday – an activity which involves students creating wonderful works of art with a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables and then eating them!

Such an event takes a lot of behind the scenes support and I would like to thank Janine Ralston, Carly Skeers and their tireless team of wonderful parent helpers for their assistance in preparing the food for the students.

... K-2 LIFE SKILLS - FOCUS FOR THE WEEKWeek 9 - Mindful Gratitude

This week was the last week in our Mindfulness in Action program. Students were excited to celebrate the ending of an amazing program in which students and teachers learned so much about self-awareness, each other, our breath, and body. Students discovered things they are really good at and really capable of. Students were invited to recreate some of their favourite poses for the class to follow. Not only was recreating movements fun, but the exercise allowed students to take on a leadership role in the class and become accountable for their own learning. Together, students revisited poses and activities they had learnt during the program and discussed which tools could be used in their own lives. Mindfulness is not only a coping tool, but it can be an absolute lifestyle if we choose to make it one. Students recalled calm, happy and relaxed feelings after engaging in the various exercises. Students suggested utilising the exercises anytime feelings of anxiousness or worry creep in, when a dispute with a friend or sibling arises or sleeplessness takes over.

... GREEN DAY 2017 - WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBERINBOW Who lives here? The school’s annual “Green Day” of environmental activities is on Wednesday 20th September, with K-2 activities on surrounding days. See last week’s newsletter for overall information.

This year’s theme is Who Lives Here? Activities link to this theme of native animals and their habitat. What are our local native birds, reptiles, mammals? What habitat do they need? How are our actions affecting them?

The stunning hall mural recently completed by Robin Martin highlights beautifully the dramatic landscape we live in, and how we share it with many other creatures. To enrich students’ appreciation of this marvellous new artwork, Green Day activities will develop links with the featured animals. Robin will return and work with some classes to draw the creatures represented on the mural.

Activities K-6K-2 classes each participate in a 90-minute art session with environmental artist Emmie Collins. Emmie will explain some of the habitat homes for local fauna and lead children in creating artworks representing them. Materials were sent home for preparation, and hopefully have already been returned. If you have not yet returned the materials, please send them on Monday as your child will need them to complete the activity. Years 1 and 2 will be seeing firsthand how plastic and foil do not break down, by pulling out the bits left in our completed compost. The rich dark soil formed by their food scraps and paper bags, unfortunately also reveals the non-degradable litter.

Year 2 will use the large 3D catchment model brought by Coastal Environment Centre. They will see how rain falling in Ingleside or Elanora flows down the gullies to the lagoon and ocean, linking with their science and geography units. Year 2 will also learn about the many problems caused by plastic pollution and some solutions from Nicola, an environmental educator who has transformed waste practices in her home city in Ecuador.

Years 2-6 will listen to Sonja Elwood, Council’s Wildlife Officer and ex-pupil of our school. Sonja will be talking about habitat and local fauna and will bring some live rescued wildlife too.

Year 3 classes will each have a 90-minute session with Lisa from Gibberagong Environmental Education on our school grounds. They will learn about the vital role of hollows for many Australian animals and birds and construct nest boxes to replace lost tree hollows. Another activity demonstrates how different bird beaks are suited for different feeding habits.

Year 3 will visit the hall for an art session with mural artist Robin Martin.

Year 4 classes will each have a 90-minute session with Helen from Gibberagong, walking up to Anana Reserve above the school where they will use geographical skills to investigate this remnant bushland and binoculars to look for its creatures. They will also use the catchment model with staff from the Coastal Environment Centre, learning about water and pollution flows.

Year 5 are preparing informative materials about the creatures depicted in our new mural. In groups, students will research an animal and prepare information sheets and learning activities suitable for different grades across the school.

Year 6 have an excursion to Middle and Deep Creeks on Tuesday 19th September with Gibberagong staff. They will be investigating this local environment through geographical inquiry techniques as well as learning about its history. At school the following day, students will complete activities using experiences from the excursion.

Do ask your children about their experiences and, hopefully, you will hear lots more!Jenny Cullen

...BOOK CHARACTER PARADE (1 0f 2)

This parade is for all students K-6 and will be held on Friday 22 September, beginning at 9.30am. Costumes are to be made at home and students are asked to wear these to school and remain in them for the whole school day, if comfortable. Students will parade to music, on the middle oval, accompanied by their buddy class. PARENTS ARE WELCOME.

This year’s Book Week Theme is “Escape to Everywhere” with a book. To support this theme, students need to decide where they would like to escape to and the name of a book related to this e.g. Escape to the ocean. A book that relates to this is “The Rainbow Fish” and the student could dress as the Rainbow Fish character. It would be beneficial to the audience if a banner/sign or sash could be held or draped over the student with the name of the place they have escaped to e.g. Ocean and the character name. It is desirable that students choose a character from a book in our school library and if possible from the Premier’s Reading list, in order that others may be motivated to borrow the books their characters represent. Students by now should be creating in order to do their character justice and be ready for a fabulous parade.

For those who need some help, below are some suggested places to escape to and examples of texts. (To find out what books we have on the place you wish to escape to, logon to the school’s online catalogue, ORBIT, by accessing the DET Portal from home).
