The story of slate began 300 million years ago. Finely divided particles of silt and clay were deposited in prehistoric lake beds. These particles were compressed under tremendous pressures and temperatures during upheavals of the earth’s surface, forming the material we now call slate.

Different colors of slate are determined by the color of the mud that was present at the time it was formed. We use red and green slate from Vermont and grey/black slate from Eastern Pennsylvania.

Some of the features of natural slate are the beautiful veining that can be seen in it, and the naturally occurring deposits in the stone, shown as darker, lighter, or different color spots embedded in the stone. These marks are caused when there is a mineral like iron that gets compressed when the slate is formed. This then shows up as dark spots on the smooth honed surface, as bumps in an imprint, or as irregularities in the ridges of the cleft. Because of these markings, you know each piece is unique, with its own character. These markings are a true testament to the naturalness of the stone.

Often people have expressed a personal wish by recording it in their will, leaving instructions with a funeral director or telling a family member. The choice is very much a personal one, with several things people may consider.

Sometimes there is a family tradition, perhaps a cemetery where the family have been buried, or a wish to be buried with their spouse. Sometimes there are religious or ethnic considerations.

Cremation affords the opportunity for other wishes to be carried out. We have worked with hundreds of families in their decision of either cremation or burial. We are here to help in every area of the funeral arrangements, including this important decision.

WHAT DO I DO WITH THE ASHES AFTER CREMATION?

Ashes may be interred in a cemetery, scattered in a favourite place, or there may be a wish for them to be repatriated overseas for burial in their homeland. We are always willing to meet with you to discuss the many options available and assist in recording your wishes so that they be known to the family.

HOW LONG DO I KEEP THE ASHES FOR?

There is no stipulated time in which to keep ashes, so you are not forced into any specific decision of time. Ashes are generally available the next day after the funeral, and choices about what to do with them can be made then.

Often, for a lot of people, burying or scattering ashes add finality to the funeral process, that helps with recovery from grief. Many people also like to scatter or bury the ashes at a specific time of the year, during specific weather conditions, or when the family is all together. Arrangements can be made with us to keep ashes for a period of time.

The imperial is a very traditional, understated urn. It is made using a cold-cast method and finished with a metallic power coat for an elegant, and timeless, textured surface.

Our imperial urns are constructed with only the finest materials to withstand the test of time. Each urn features a threaded top opening for easy and secure access.

They come with the option of including a matching keepsake candle that has a special sentiment all of its own.

A polymer-bonded bronze powder is expertly cold-cast to form a beautifully textured surface for these urns and they are finished in three distinctive colours.

The journey biodegradable urn is perfect for ocean or deep water burial. It’s engineered to float momentarily and then gracefully sink. Once submerged, the urn will break down rapidly, gently releasing the ashes into the water.

The urn includes a water-soluble plastic bag which secures the ashes when dry and dissolves quickly when wet. The urn can be opened and resealed for scattering some or all of the ashes prior to laying on the surface of the water.

Each urn is handmade using a centuries-old papermaking technique in which the bark from the mulberry tree is harvested without harming the tree. TSA approved and the perfect urn for carry on when traveling. Our biodegradable urns are constructed to clearly allow security screeners to view the contents of the urn.

Note that all water burial urns are also suitable for land burial.

Designed to provide families with an urn that will float momentarily on the waters surface, then sink, where they break down naturally over time. PLEASE NOTE: Natural and blue coloured earthurns are not available at this stage.
