WELCOME TO DRY CREEK VALLEY

ABOUTDry Creek Valley lies in the northwest corner of Sonoma County, separated from the Pacific Ocean by twenty miles of rugged California coastal range mountains. Only 16 miles long by two miles wide, this intimate and pristine valley offers a diversity of vineyards, wines and people all connected by a shared passion for the valley’s heritage, land and winemaking excellence. We welcome you to explore our valley and to encourage you to try our wide array of wines, including our signature varietals, Zinfandel, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc.

TERROIRDry Creek valley’s unique characteristics are celebrated by winegrowers and closely detailed in the vineyard development process. Each plot of land is planted to ensure the traits of the land will impart a unique imprint onto the grapes grown within. Dry Creek Valley can be broadly divided into the hillsides, benchlands and valley floor and is bordered by Lake Sonoma in the north and the confluence of Dry Creek and the Russian River to the south. Long, warm days of abundant sunshine are tempered by cool breezes and fog provided by the Pacific Ocean.

PASSPORT TO DRY CREEK VALLEYIn its 26th year, Passport to Dry Creek Valley is a celebration of the region’s viticultural and epicurean bounty and the farmers, vintners and families that are at the heart of our region and is one of the longest-running wine events of its kind in California. It is the signature event of the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley, a non-profit organization founded in 1989 that is dedicated to the recognition, preservation and enhancement of Dry Creek Valley as a premium winegrowing region.

A HISTORY IN VINES

DISCOVERYWhile Dry Creek Valley has a modern reputation for premium wine, the roots of the region go back 140 years to the first plantings of Zinfandel prior to Prohibition. The earliest recorded vineyards were planted in the 1850’s, followed by the establishment of Dry Creek Valley’s inaugural winery in 1870 and first commercially-produced wine two years later.

REVIVALDespite renewed interest in wine production after “repeal” in 1933, only three Dry Creek Valley wineries remained by the end of World War II in the 1940’s - two of which continue today - Frei Brothers and J. Pedroncelli. Many Zinfandel vineyards survived, but prunes and pears became a mainstay through the Depression and beyond. The California wine renaissance in the 1970’s revitalized the valley’s wine industry. Longtime families and newcomers rescued old vineyards, planted new vines and established wineries.

TODAY9,000 acres of vineyards cover the valley, with over 150 winegrape growers providing exceptional fruit to 60+ wineries - nearly all of which are family-owned, with some boasting as many as six generations of winemakers who’ve passed down the tradition of winemaking excellence through the century.

SUNDAY VINEYARD TOURS START AT 9:30 AM

PUCCIONI RANCH22300 Puccioni Rd, Healdsburg

Celebrating 100 Years of History! Our great grandfather purchased the estate ranch in 1904, and we have been growing Zinfandel vines on the property ever since! Our family operated a winery on the property from 1919 to 1935, when a mule and a plow were used to farm the vineyards. We continued with the mule and plow until the late 1960’s and were subsequently the last farmers in Dry Creek to use a mule commercially.

Today the ranch is farmed by the fourth generation of our family. The Ranch is composed of a beautiful pristine valley with elevations from 400 to 1000 feet. The west facing slopes are planted with Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Alicante Boushet, while the east facing slopes are dominated by towering Redwood trees. Our Old Block was planted more than 100 years ago and produces distinguished crops still today. Although much of the ranch has been recently redeveloped, we have worked hard to maintain the integrity of the property by using old clone Zin and head training. We are certified Fish Friendly Farming and use Sustainable farming practices exclusively, respecting the property and doing things in a manner that will allow our vineyard to produce great wines for the next 100 years and beyond.

We invite you to visit our historic property – tour the vineyards and redwoods, discuss winegrowing on our ranch, and taste the wines produced by this special place. Share in the history of Dry Creek Valley – an experience to remember.

Directions: Westside Rd to Mill Creek Rd – approx 3.1 miles out Mill Creek Rd go right after a small bridge onto Puccioni Rd – we are located at the end of the paved road at the end of Puccioni Rd)

GOLDSCHMIDT VINEYARD SALMONS LEAP650 Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg

Join international winemaker and vineyard owner Nick Goldschmidt for a tour through his Salmons Leap Vineyard. Bordered by Dry Creek to the west, Salmons Leap is one of several vineyards Nick owns throughout the world. Taking a global perspective of viticulture and winemaking, Nick will discuss how he produces the best possible fruit from his vineyards, no matter where the location. Topics will include pruning on VSP versus split canopy, water usage, best practices during the growing season, the importance of berry size and how proper viticulture practices can influence berry size, taste and so much more. Nick will also discuss the difference between Merlot from Dry Creek Valley versus Alexander Valley, and include a tasting of his wine produced from Salmons Leap Vineyard.

SATURDAY VINEYARD TOURS START AT 9:30 AM

COMSTOCK WINES1290 Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg, California.

Please join our Winemaker, Chris Russi, as he takes you on a tour of our Comstock Wines Estate Old Vine Zinfandel. Learn how farming techniques have changed over the past 100 years, and how Zinfandel vines in particular develop depth of flavor with age. Also discuss different pruning and irrigation techniques, as they relate to fruit quality and flavor and taste a sample of our inaugural release from this vineyard.

TRATTORE VINEYARDS7700 Dry Creek Road, Geyserville

Come tour 40 spectacular acres of hillside vineyards and olive orchards which overlook Dry Creek Valley. End the tour in the cellar of our future winery where you will enjoy Zinfandel plus Rhone varietals made from Trattore Vineyards and sample award-winning oils made from the olive orchards. You will see many types of farming techniques employed in the fields while taking in breath-taking views on the guided walking tour. Rooted in European tradition, Trattore translates to “tractor” in Italian and is a tribute to the owner’s appreciation for the enduring craftsmanship symbolized by his collection of showcase tractors which will also be on display to view after the field tour ends. We look forward to sharing a bit of this beautiful appellation with you!

Directions: Head up the driveway at 7700 Dry Creek Road and follow the signs to the left to the main barn where the tour will start and end.
