It’s been four shows since the last report.

Huntsville. After missing the Huntsville show last year in order to make a run to Cincinnati for their show, I made a return

this year. Jeff and Ben rallied at my house and the road trip was on. True to form, an exit was missed, but we actually

got there with very little trouble. As always it was a nice show, if, like most others this year, a bit small. Still, any time at

a show, with friends and buying opportunities abundant, can’t be considered a waste. Although I’m sure our various sig-

nificant others may have different opinions. I boxed up my Fee and Jeff was nice enough to play mule for Tom and took

a few of his models to enter to support the Huntsville crowd. I didn’t take any pictures, but I am happy to report that the

honor of the Chattanooga Scale Modelers was upheld as my Fee was rewarded with the Best Aircraft plaque, and Tom’s

kit bashed Sci-Fi combat car picked up the Best Sci-Fi plaque (even though the FW portion of the car is CLEARLY back-

wards!).

Cincinnati. A couple of weekends later, Tom and I wound our way to Cincinnati for their show. And yes, once again, an exit

was missed. The GPS app on my phone picked an inopportune time to lose its signal, and I ended up having to pull off

and fall back on the new Apple maps app. It all worked out and we found the hotel with little trouble. Again, Cincy was

also a little on the small side, but they weren’t helped by IPMS scheduling an event with the I Hobby show in Cleveland

that same weekend. But, and yet again, it was a really nice show, and another opportunity to see old friends and buy

more stuff than we needed to. And, again, although no Best Of’s came back to Chattanooga was well represented and

rewarded. And this time, I did manage to remember to take a few pictures.

Murfreesboro. Let’s just continue the theme and say again that show size and show attractions were consistent with Hunts-

ville and Cincy. I can say that the implementation of GSB ran more smoothly than their first crack at it last year. And

let’s face it; trying something new ALWAYS entails a learning curve, something we learned very well the first show we

hosted. I give the boys from Middle Tennessee full marks for sticking with GSB and making it better. Here’s to hoping

they stick with it and continue the trend of some shows using GSB. A little variety in life is good. One interesting sight

was the different takes Rich Van Zandt and I took in finishing our X-47B models. It’s the Navy’s test bed, carrier capable

UCAV (Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle). While I went with a very clean, low hour representation, Rich went with a more

broken in operational look. Honestly, I liked his better. Maybe Lynn got pictures of Rich’s model. I got pictures, but not

many.

And finally the NNL Southern Nationals, hosted by ACME (Atlanta Car Model Enthusiasts). As Lynn and I found out a couple

weeks ago, even though they are car guys, the ACME boys are great guys. We were warmly welcomed to their meeting

and given a chance to plug our show and beg for help judging cars. We were also invited to come back the following

weekend and visit their show. Now, I admit to not being a car modeler. And I admit to generally only passing through

the car model categories at IPMS shows. But I’ll also now whole heartedly admit that I’ve been making a mistake. Just

4

like in the aircraft, armor and figure categories I normally study, there are, not surprisingly, some truly gifted modelers in

the car ranks. Check the website for the pictures I took. I was totally GOBSMACKED by several of the finishes on these

models. Truly amazing airbrush work. To say nothing of the gloss finishes…Ay Carumba!

5

Bummer of the month…AAA Hobbies in Marietta is closing at the end of this month. The last days in business will be November

23rd and 24th. I’ve only been around here for 10 years, and have only known the shop with James as the owner. But in those 10

years it seems that AAA has been an institution for modelers. Drop by late on a Saturday morning, and you were just about guar-

anteed to get invited to go to lunch with the boys. Drop in anytime on Saturday and be ready to see all the regulars. Be ready to

get some (mostly) good natured ribbing from Corley, and if Rusty was behind the counter, be ready to get a deal or two. Be

ready to spend 10 minutes or several hours hanging out with a bunch of likeminded folks without the roar of RC cars, the rumble

of fantasy gamers, or the distractions of other hobbyists. Pure plastic modeling nirvana. Even though I never managed to get

down there as often as I’d of liked, it still seems like the sad end of an era. The place felt like the Cheers of modeling. Every

modeler reading this should pause on Tuesday the 27th and realize that we’ve lost another B&M shop. Another place to gather

and share the hobby we all love. Another one bites the dust. Farewell AAA, and best of luck to James.

A couple of show reminders:

1. We’re gonna need everyone to pitch in. On the up side, we aren’t responsible for setting up or striking tables this year. The

good folks of the Convention Center are going to handle that. We will need to put the plastic sheeting on the tables (and clean

that up) as well as put the table risers on the legs, but the hard work will be done for us! But we will need:

Computer literate folks for registration and scoring. It honestly isn’t hard stuff; you just have to know how to

navigate around a pretty simple Excel spread sheet. At least 4 guys would be nice. And having two available on

Friday afternoon would be most excellent.

A few guys to handle the walk in traffic at the door. Being in the Convention Center the same weekend as WoW,

we’re really hoping for robust walk in traffic.

A couple of guys on Friday and Saturday to help vendors find their tables and get their wares loaded into the

hall.

A Photographer. I didn’t get pictures from last year posted on the web site, and I’d really like to see if we can get

a picture of everything model posted on the website this year.

A couple of guys to take the lead on getting us set up for the Hospitality Meet & Greet at the Staybridge Suites

on Friday evening. This will entail making sure we’ve got a few cases of beer on ice, some water, and some soft

drinks. Also possibly some Costco type finger foods.

2-3 guys to run score sheets to the poor saps stuck entering scores into the computer on Saturday.

Someone to take charge of signs. Being in the convention center, we really shouldn’t need much, but I’m sure as

the date approaches, we’ll figure out we need some.

A couple guys to run the raffle.

JUDGES. If we have the model turnout we’re hoping for, we’re gonna need a lot of judges. More on that later,

but think about it.

6

And last, but not least, a couple of (patient) guys to run the Make ‘n Take tables. Again, with the Wow, we’re

planning for a pretty robust turnout for the MnT.

Thank goodness we’ve got more guys than ever showing up for meetings. We’re gonna need your help to make this show a suc-

cess! And please, remember we’re going to need some folks on Friday. Which no doubt means some vacation days.

2. Club build. Remember the Academy 1/72 scale club build. Mine is almost done. It’s the Academy Zero, with some oddball

decals from some obscure outfit called MaxModels. I know there’s also a P-51B out there that’s completed. It’d be really nice if

we could manage to put at least 10-12 models out there as a group. And, if everyone can let me know what they are building, I’ll

get working on thinking about a display for the collection. And remember, it doesn’t have to be an airplane. Academy has a

really nice selection of 1/72 armor and soft skins. They count as well. And finally on this one, Brandon has graciously donated a

couple of Academy airplanes to the cause. If not having a kit has been holding you back, I’ve got a Hawker Hurricane and a FW-

190 that will go first come, first served. The only caveat is that if you don’t finish it for the show, you’ll owe Brandon for the kit

(that’s my condition, not his!).

3. A couple of announcements.

A. We have some FANTASTIC new medallions. We’ve managed to pull off getting a 3D version of ‘Kamikaze Mike’

custom cast as either 2.5” or 3” (my memory sucks sometimes, especially when I’m suffering through Allergies)

medallions in Gold, Silver and Bronze. We’ll also include a simple coin easel to make displaying the medallions

easy and attractive.

B. We have a couple of fantastic grand prizes for the Best Showcase Display model, and the Judges Best in Show model. Since

we’ll be rewarding the best modeling, we’ll be giving the best in airbrushes. That’s right; the winning modelers in each divi-

sion will receive brand spanking new Grex Tritium airbrushes.

7

Tools I can’t live without.

The Saturday of the Hobby Town show that we helped out with, several of us also spent the day working on models in the back

meeting area. All the crap I took that day got me to thinking about all the tools I’ve come to rely on. Some are every day, every

model tools and some are every once in a while tools, but when I need them, I can’t live without them. I also thought it might be

fun to share what they are.

So my first entry into the Tools I Can’t Live Without blurb-o-sphere is….drum roll please….Tamiya Tape.

This is truly one tool I use on EVERY model, and in almost every trip to the bench. I use it for taping up dry fits; yeah, I could

use cheaper tape, but Tamiya tape is ALWAYS on my bench and right at hand. I use it for masking canopies; it’s thin

enough that I can normally see the canopy frames through it to cut the masking out in place (on a side note, if it’s a com-

plex canopy, if you can find Eduard masks that are made from the same tape, use them!). I use it for masking color de-

marcations; it’s low tack enough to not damage all but the most delicate of finishes, and if you de-tack it more by sticking

it to your forehead, it’s really safe). I use it for masking painted roundels; it’s thin enough that it’s easier to cut circles in

than regular tapes. I use it for masking invasion stripes; I never trust that invasion stripe decals are going to fit right, I

find it easier to weather paint than decals, and Tamiya tape is flexible enough that when cut into thin strips it takes

curves well. I use it for transferring measurements. I use it to mask ribs on bi-planes. I sometimes wonder what hap-

pens to Tamiya’s stock price when I place an order for Tamiya tape. So yeah, Tamiya Tape is a tool I can’t live without!

What about you guys? What tool(s) can’t you live without?

The wad of tape in the corner is from masking the Suez stripes. Above that are the three sizes of Tamiya tape I use, as well as a

roll of 1mm and 2mm wide Tamiya type tape, especially useful for masking the ribs on bi-planes.

Subject: Contest

Message: Greetings fellow modelers,

The Catawba Valley Scale Modelers will be holding their second annual model contest and swap meet on Saturday, March 16,

2013.

After our first Annual Contest and Swap meet, we have decided to change a couple of things in the format to make our Second

Annual Contest and Swap meet flow better. We will hold this contest at our home location in Hickory, N. C. The contest will be

held at the Hickory Regional Airport, which is located on U. S. 321, and just a few miles north of I-¬40. The contest will be held in

the terminal building of the airport. The vendor area will be in another building about fifty yards across the parking lot from the

terminal. There is ample free parking, and you will be able to unload and later load models from your vehicles at the front door.

There is a small restaurant at the terminal, and many others nearby. We will provide maps listing most area restaurants and local

hobby shops.

Located in the same terminal building, is the Hickory Aviation Museum. Admission is free for all participants of the contest. The

museum has been in existence for five years, and has some very interesting displays. Some inside exhibits include a cutaway

working jet engine, a cutaway working radial engine, two 20mm Vulcan rotary cannons from F-14 and F/A-18 aircraft, ejection

seats, and so much more. The outside aircraft exhibits include the last Navy F-14D Tomcat that ever flew, Vietnam combat vet-

eran A¬7A Corsair II, the seventh F-105B Thunderchief built, the 86th F-4B Phantom II built (originally an F4H), FJ¬3M Fury, T¬33

Shooting Star, F-5E Tiger II Marine Aggressor, A¬4L Skyhawk, De Havilland Vampire, HA-200 Saeta (ME-200), T-34C Mentor, and a

Fedex Fokker F-27 Friendship that has an open cockpit that you can sit in. Also, the only F-14 cockpit section, other that at the

Naval Aviation Museum, will be parked in front of the contest area, and will be open to get into. This is a great photo opportu-

nity. Also on display are Phoenix missiles, Sidewinder missile, Maverick missile, and several bombs and rocket pods. Extra tour

guides will be on hand for questions, or you can just spend all the time you want looking around.

A special guest will be at the contest. You may be familiar with the Martin B-26 Marauder from WWII nicknamed “FLAK BAIT”.

Several model companies include decals for this aircraft in their kits. That aircraft flew more missions during WWII, 202, than any

other U.S. Aircraft, and is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C. One of the last pilots that flew “FLAK BAIT”,

Sherman Best, will be on hand during the contest for you to meet and to sign autographs. (I took my Monogram 1/48 scale

model of “FLAK BAIT”, and had him autograph the bottom of one of the wings).

A very special event will happen during the contest. Everyone that enters a model in the contest will have their name put into a

hat. At 1pm, we will draw three (3) names from the hat. Each one of the three will get a free twenty (20) minute ride in a Cessna

O-1F Birddog (also known as the L-19). This aircraft is painted in the Vietnam era U. S. Air Force scheme. Two things could pre-

vent the flights from happening. The first would be the weather. The second would be the availability of the pilot.

Several individuals that were at out last contest told us what a good time they had. We are going to do everything we can to see

that everyone really enjoys this one. Please let all the members of your chapter know about this so they can plan to attend. If

you have any questions, please feel free to call.

Hope to see you there

To: The Honorable Men and Women of Region 3 Ok, the first round of making me over as Frankenstein is over and the doctors feel good about my pro-gress……It is pronounced FRAN KIN STEEN with the emphasis on the first soliable…….soliloquy……..Oh Hell, just watch Young Dr Frankenstein. My head doctors are still amazed that a body this large can operate with a brain so small and No, when I had my last colonoscopy my head was not up my ass as most of you may think. Seems like, I can’t catch a break right now as they are sure that I have Sleep Apathy…….uh Ap-nea. It really ought to be Sleep Apathy because apparently your throat doesn’t care if you live or die. Talk about closing the old passage way down at a most inopportune time. Why doesn’t it do that when I have to throw up…..huh, huh. I am scheduled for another test this coming Tuesday night. They watch you while you sleep………and charge YOU FOR THE PRIVILEGE. I thought you got put in jail for that. I may check into that gig when I get put back together. Seems like it would be funny to watch old geezers like me sleep some, get up and pee, sleep some more, fart, pee some more and sleep some. Oh well, I did come up with a new version of that old children’s church classic “Dem Bones”. The old version went something like this….”The thigh bone connected to knee bone and the knee bone connected to the leg bone……….”. Well, that is a bunch of crap and my new version is more in line with modern society and it goes like this…..”And the knee bone is connected to the checkbook and the hip bone is connected to the checkbook and the neck bone is connected to the checkbook…..now hear the word of your Insurance. You got to pay out your butt hole, oh and that is an added expense as well….read the fine print….we only accept major credit cards or Paypal. Well, enough about me and my petty little problems. Many of you have taken it upon yourselves to re-charter without hearing from me and to that I say…………….THANKS. So, we are grinding along, wearing the bear-ings out on all four of our wheels, slowly but surely. To those of you already knee deep in the re-charter process, and big hug and sloppy kiss from your RC. Now, to you slackers, don’t get up you know who you are…………You have approximately 45 days and counting. Don’t make my wife have to come find you…..and we have your addresses. Just look at what she has done to me, 2 bad knees, a damaged lower back, throat cut and semi-broken neck and now sleep apathy…….and she says she loves me…………. Get back to work, you bunch of (fill in the blank). Thanks and thanks for all of you that checked on me. God bless. Phil, RC3

Hi Lynn and Michael, I had all the good intentions in the world to attend the next modeler's meeting on the19th. Unfortunately, I found out Friday that I will have to go into the hospital on Monday for open heart surgery to replace a valve. Down the road, I plan to attend. I have sent my dues to IPMS but have not heard anything yet. Lee

On Sunday November 4th Mike and myself made a little trip to the regular monthly meeting of the Atlanta

Model Car Enthusiast group. They meet in the Smyrna Community Center just south of Dobbins Air Force

Base. The primary purpose of the visit was to advertise our upcoming show and to solicit their help in judg-

ing the automotive entries at our show. It is interesting to observe how other model clubs do their thing.

Their meeting was well attended. In part because their show came up just 6 days later. They did a bit of

business discussing their show, and then did a few minutes of show and tell. About 26 members were pre-

sent. We were given a few minutes to advertise our show. Their club president is a gentleman named

Henry Trent. He actually lives in Athens, Tennessee and drives down every month to the meeting there in

Smyrna. Many of their members had attended our show n the past. They seemed impressed that we were

moving our show to the downtown area in the convention center. Some faces were familiar in their group.

Joe Driver who has been a long time IPMS members and has attended and won at many IPMS shows sat

with us and we had a good time catching up. The bad news of the day was confirmation that AAA is closing.

(see more in Mike’s article) All in all I suspect we’ll see several of their group helping us this year.

The Saturday after our last meeting was “Build a Better Model day at HobbyTown” Two things were accomplished.

1. We provided judging services for the biannual contest at HobbyTown. Photos of the big three winning entries are

on the next page.

2. A bunch of us hung out at the shop building models and providing impromptu demos for passing customers and

for each other! It kind of reminded me of the days when I was 13 years old and Paul Akin would come over and we’d

build the old Revell 1/72 Fokker DVII and SPAD XIII in the floor of my garage. We’d swap techniques and share tools.

Much the same went on that Saturday but with more toys to use. Mike brought his airbrush and did several little

demos with various colors to show how he did things. I did my little demo with Apoxie Sculpt and Ben shared his Mr.

Gap Filler which also worked well. Ben also worked on his F-18 and David Beckman worked on an Academy Sopwith

Camel. I did the basic parts cleanup for a ME163. Emanuel showed up to do the photographs , and again I am very

thankful! Lee Pickles was also present soaking up a lot of tidbits on how to build things. It was indeed a good day. In

spite of my slowly coming down with the effect of food poisoning/flu I managed to learn a lot of new technique

things. I also got to see the story of Wal-Mart's Frog Tape..(More in a future issue!)

Jeff, Mike, and myself rode in Jeff’s red van up

to Murfreesboro town and met Tom and Terry

and Brian on site at the Rutherford County Agricultural Center where we all enjoyed the annual IPMS Middle

Tennessee model show. Don Hixson brought along his model steam donkey. Several of us shared a vend-

ing arena with Jack of MidTN Hobbies. Again having a place to sit and camp out was most beneficial.

The area was well laid out with vending in one end of the hall and models displayed in the adjoining wing. In

the event vending was slow, at least for our intrepid group. But where vending was slow the deals were

really fine near the end of the day!!!!

Jeff enjoyed Greg Tucker's talk on Pappy Boyington of

F4U Corsair fame with VMF-214. It turns out this was

an enhanced version of the presentation I enjoyed

about a year ago or so. Greg Tucker's daughter was a

ground crew person on the AV-8 harriers in Afghani-

stan on of course VMFA-214.

Ron Thorne & Jack Bruno were present and joined us

for the annual dinner after party.

Mike won best a/c. Tom got several nice awards
