INTRODUCING YOUR GUEST EDITORS: REG HANA AND LUBOS MICHALIC THIS IS YOUR MAGAZINE, CREATED WITH YOU IN MIND. EACH ISSUE WILL GO OUT UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF TWO OF YOUR DIXONS CARPHONE COLLEAGUES.

Hello to all Dixons Carphone colleagues. It’s really exciting to be asked to step in and edit this

issue of our great new magazine. We think the merger is a proud

moment for us all. It means we’re closer to both our colleagues and customers. It gives us a real understanding of how everyone works, so we can work better together. It’s also a chance for us to tell a new story with so many new possibilities.

So what’s in this issue? Well, plenty to get you talking and involved. For example, on page 13, we look back on the iPhone 6 launch hysteria, which promised another brilliant piece of product design, but are Apple still driving innovation like they used to?

On page 14, we look at our brilliant sales tool, Pin Point, which allows us much more personal interaction and engagement with our customers –

which they find valuable, and we find fun! But, what really comes across in this issue is the togetherness of all colleagues.

So, grab a coffee and get reading. Hope you enjoy it!

We want to hear your thoughts on our magazine and get your suggestions for future issues. Contact us at [email protected]. Strictly private and confidential. This magazine and its contents are the property of Dixons Carphone plc and are for internal use only. No part of this magazine may be reprinted in whole or in part without the prior written permission of Dixons Carphone plc.

You might remember Richard Harris and Gemma Hansell from the first issue, where they shared their inside knowledge about what’s worth getting excited about in the connected world. Richard is a Business Advisor and tech obsessive based in Anglesea, South Wales and Gemma’s a Geek Squad Agent based in Tottenham Court Road, London.TURN TO PAGE 12 AND GET TO KNOW THEM BETTER.

YOU CHOSE

IT!

So what do you think about the new name? In the first issue, we asked you to get in touch to

let us know what you thought of the mag, and what you thought we should call it. Hundreds of you responded with your ideas and suggestions, and Connected was your favourite.

The name Connected works for the mag on so many levels. We’re now working as one business, we want the mag to keep you linked into the news and info you need, and, obviously, our whole reason for being is to make lives better through connected technology. Genius!

We’ve chosen Acton – the site of the Carphone Warehouse’s current Support Centre – after a thorough search of possible sites. After considering square footage, car parking facilities and public transport links, it was clear that Acton was the best site for the job.

A significant investment will be made to develop Acton and create a Support Centre which reflects the exciting company we are creating together.

As you’re probably aware, we have to exit the Hemel site in 2015. The move is likely to start in May 2015 and colleagues are now being offered a range of support options to help make the move work for them.

Nicola Thody, Commercial Development Manager, has been chosen as an

‘everywoman’ in the Specsavers ‘everywoman in Retail’ Ambassador programme. This celebrates role models who individually represent the best of female talent working in retail today.

Nicola’s one of 12 female trailblazers selected to be 2014’s Ambassadors and role models for the next generation of women pursuing a career in retail.

And that’s not all. James Stewart, Head of Store Support, picked up the award for Store Support Manager of the Year At the Retail Week Rising

Star Awards, beating stiff competition from seven others, including Sainsbury’s and Arcadia. Mark Stevens, Store Manager of Currys PC World Thurrock Megastore was also one of three people shortlisted for Store Manager of the Year.

THE ONES TO

THE INTERNATIONALE FUNKAUSSTELLUNG BERLIN (OR MORE SNAPPILY KNOWN AS IFA BERLIN) IS THE EVENT

IN THE TECH SUPPLIER’S DIARY. AS EUROPE’S LEADING SPECIALIST ELECTRICAL AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS RETAILER, WE WERE, OF COURSE, AT THE FRONT OF

THE QUEUE WHEN THE DOORS OPENED…

WATCH

Wearables stole the show this year, with watches launched by all the major manufacturers.

We’re talking smartwatches – ones with big screens for notifications and with a proper OS to run apps. Samsung’s Galaxy Gear S (pictured above) was among the watches on show from Motorola, LG, Sony and Asus.

We also saw big smartphone announcements from Microsoft, Samsung and Sony. Microsoft announced a range of phones, with the 730 our pick of the bunch. With a 5MP front-facing camera and dedicated app for selfies, it’s being dubbed the ‘Selfie Phone’. Sony unveiled the new Xperia Z3 and Samsung showcased the Galaxy Note 4 and Alpha.

Even food’s going all techie, with the Samsung Chef Collection. It takes kitchen appliances up a notch with micro LED lights in the fridge door to display temperatures of different compartments and the ability to store food at chef-recommended temperatures in four different ‘zones’.

Finally, Samsung has launched its vision for the Home of the Future, with its CEO Mr. Yoon saying he sees a future where a billion homes are tailored to the specific needs of those who live in them.

THE BEST OF THE REST:

Dyson’s 360 Eye robotic vacuum cleaner:

Controlled remotely via a smartphone app, this vac even reports on where it’s been! It’ll be available next summer priced at around £700.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge: As well as looking awesome with its curved-edge screen, this also provides quick access to frequently used apps, alerts and

functions – even when the cover’s closed! Users can also receive notifications directly on screen while watching videos, without disturbing their viewing.

Sony 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector: This lets you place the projector closer to your wall, which means shadows won’t interfere with projection. And unlike the projectors we’re used to, there’s no inconvenient set up.

COLLEAGUES LOVE SWAS TOO

“In a SWAS, we can demonstrate technology in action, actually

showing people what their mobile phone can do, instead of

simply advising. I’ve seen the value of this interaction in driving sales,

and it’s an amazing experience that we’re now able to give customers.”

REG HANA CUSTOMER CONSULTANT

“It’s a different environment, and you build rapport with customers a lot quicker. It’s great to work in such a big team of over 20 people, and

there are so many products available to offer customers. You don’t have

to shop anywhere else.”ANDRE MAYS

RETAIL PERFORMANCE COACH

14

OUR WHOLE ETHOS IS TO MAKE CUSTOMERS’ LIVES BETTER THROUGH CONNECTED TECHNOLOGY, GIVING THEM A GREAT EXPERIENCE EVERY TIME. OUR SWAS* PROGRAMME IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF US WORKING TOGETHER TO DO JUST THAT.

SWAS is more than just an add-on. One of our proudest launch moments, it continues to go

from strength to strength, with 25 Carphone Warehouse stores now trading within Currys PC World stores.

As Dixons Carphone’s Retail Performance guru, Emma Long is understandably passionate about the programme: “SWAS is such an important part of our partnership. Since merging, Currys PC World and Carphone managers have built really strong relationships, which means customers see just one team and get an even more seamless service.”

As with any major project, it’s the people behind it that really make the difference to success. As well as the chance to get to know one another, and one another’s businesses, there are some great opportunities too.

Emma continues: “This is an exciting opportunity to do something different. Although we’re still working through the detail of how colleagues can progress from one part of the business to another, the chance will absolutely be there for them to shape what SWAS is going to look like.”

CUSTOMERS LOVE THEM!Emma’s confident that the customers who’ve seen them love them as much as we do: “Some of them are surprised we’re there as they may not know about the merger, but they’re so impressed we have everything they need under one roof. We’re in locations which haven’t had Carphone products before, so Currys PC World customers love that we’re ticking all their boxes.”

PHONES 4U UPDATEFollowing their closure, we’ve welcomed over 800 colleagues from our 159 Phones 4U shops within shops and have been working hard to get them trading again.

HOW TECHNOLOGY CHANGED MY LIFE

6 CONNECTED | OCTOBER 2014 7OCTOBER 2014 | CONNECTED

‘‘My mother, who’s 82, lives with me and her dog died, so I was keen to get her another one.

In this country, there are plenty of large dogs available, but we wanted a small one. I have friends who are involved in Worldwide Pet Rescue, so I asked them for advice. I found Tiffany through a website featuring a lady who rescues dogs from Bulgaria and Romania. She’s a Jack Russell stray with a misplaced jaw and had been beaten really badly. She’s around six years old, which is perfect for us, but often people don’t want dogs that are getting old.

It cost £700 to get her here, what with injections and vet’s checks, which was raised thanks to local donations. I picked her up in July from Dover and she’s getting stronger each month. It’s so rewarding to

give her a loving home alongside our cats Max and Mindy.

I think what this shows is that, as well as being amazing technology, the internet can also make amazing things happen in people’s lives. Without being able to access that website and see the dogs as though I was in the same room, I’d never have noticed Tiffany.

The internet really does open up a world of opportunities for everyone – whether they’ve got two legs or four!”

CAROLINE’S BARKING MAD ABOUT TECH

A WORD FROM KATIE BICKERSTAFFE CEO, UK & IRELAND DIXONS

...AND FROM GRAHAM STAPLETON CEO, UK & IRELAND CARPHONE

“OUR STORES ARE PERFORMING WELL AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR CUSTOMERS ARE TELLING US THAT THEY LIKE WHAT THEY SEE. I’M IMMENSELY PROUD OF HOW MUCH WE HAVE ACHIEVED IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.”

“EACH AND EVERY CUSTOMER MUST COUNT, AND WE MUST DELIVER OUR AMBITION TO BE THE UK’S TOP RETAILER FOR ASSISTED SALES. ONE MEASURE OF OUR SUCCESS IS AN EXPERIENCE SO GOOD THAT CUSTOMERS RECOMMEND US TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS.”

‘‘Wow. What a couple of months. Since the first issue, we’ve already made big strides developing and growing our business.

The roll-out of our SWAS programme has continued at pace and we now have 25 stores open. I’m delighted that we were able to offer roles to over 800 colleagues from our Phones 4U shop in shops. The launch of the iPhone 6 has been fantastic, driving a huge amount of footfall. There was a great buzz in our stores, with everyone working together. We’ve also been trading strongly over the last few weeks.

Our stores are performing well, with both colleagues and customers giving us great feedback on the whole SWAS experience. We’ve also been looking at other opportunities presented by the merger, such as Logistics, Buying and eCommerce, and the teams are working well together.

We’ve also reached an important milestone: we’re now in the FTSE 100, the top tier of the London Stock Exchange. This shows that our shareholders, and the overall market, have bought into our vision and are backing us to succeed. We’re now one of the UK’s largest companies and we’ll continue to grow. Pretty exciting I think.

We’re now entering Dixons’ busiest and most important time of the year, Peak. It’s when we help more customers, deliver more products and, crucially, make more money than any other time. I know that with the support of the whole business, we’ll deliver an outstanding performance.

A brilliant new Currys PC World campaign is kicking off this week (see pages 8 and 9). It tells our story about how we make customers lives better by finding the right product for them. If we all stay true to that, I know we’ll have another fantastic end to the year.

We’re building an amazing new business together and I’m impressed and humbled by how you embrace the new, stay focused and continue to do a brilliant job.”

‘‘What a period it’s been. The collapse of Phones 4U has changed the high street landscape and their customers are now looking to us for reassurance

and advice on staying connected. We mustn’t let them down, so I’m proud that we moved quickly to help. We’ve invested in our proposition, with marketing activity and increasing colleagues’ hours in store to create a great experience.

To benefit from this unique opportunity, each and every customer must count, and we must deliver our ambition to be the UK’s top retailer for assisted sales.

One measure of our success is an experience so good that customers recommend us to family and friends. Doing that right – and doing it right now – will help create an unprecedented amount of new business.

As the only nationwide high street retailer to offer a full choice of the major networks, the strength of our partnership and the scale of our combined company put us in an incredible position. We must take full advantage of it.

The iPhone 6 launch is a great example of how well we do things. We’d planned meticulously – including having accessories in store before any other retailer – and had our biggest ever week of postpay connections outside of Christmas! We had record pre-orders and first week sales, and achieved our largest ever market share for an Apple launch. Around 25% of the pre-orders came from the Currys PC World websites, showing the power of our new partnership.

We’re now entering one of the most important times of the year. Our price

promise launched this month, backing up our offer in this extremely value-conscious market. We’ve backed this with an extensive marketing campaign which tells customers ‘it pays to compare’, a reminder that we’re the only place to compare the widest range of networks.

So we’ve a lot of good news to share with customers. If we stay

focused and continue to do a brilliant job, we’ll have a great autumn.”

Thank you, Katie All the best, Graham

The love customers have for brands can be really powerful – think Coke, Apple or Mercedes. “If customers love what you do, they’re very likely to come

to you before other brands,” explains Gary. “As a brand, we’re very well-known, but not necessarily as well-loved as we’d like. This campaign came about to start to drive that brand loyalty.”

A lot of the work happened way before the camera started rolling. Researching customer habits was the first step: “We started off by understanding how customers research and shop,” says Gary. “Customers often research and plan their purchases far earlier than you might think, and that journey can be a bit overwhelming when they’re faced with so much choice.

A GUESS WHO FOR THE CONNECTED WORLD Remember Guess Who, the game where you’d eliminate characters through clever questioning until you were left with exactly the right one? Well, that’s how our new campaign works! We eliminate everything that isn’t right for the customer until we’re left with the solution that is.

ALTHOUGH THE CAMPAIGN IS FOR CURRYS PC WORLD PRODUCTS, ITS MESSAGE IS RELEVANT TO ALL OF US, AS GARY POINTS OUT:

Customers need someone they can trust for advice, and our role is to provide that expert help whenever we can. If customers start with us earlier in their journey, by the time they’re ready to buy, we should be the retailer they choose.”

We’re all really passionate about our USP – fantastic stores and fantastic people. Going into a store, touching the product and getting all the advice you need from our colleagues is a no-brainer! That’s the message this campaign is giving our customers.

SO, WHAT WILL WE SEE ON OUR TV SCREENS? This isn’t your typical Currys PC World deal advert, as Gary’s keen to point out: “We’re not going to stop the ‘deal’ ads, but this is another layer of communication to help customers see that we offer so much more. These ads tell customers why they should start with us: fantastic choice and great advice to help customers find exactly the right product for them.”

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT FOR PEAK We’re launching just before Peak so that people start thinking about us early on in their planning. HAVING YOUR CAKE…BIRTHDAYS, WEDDINGS AND, ER, MERGERS… WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE SOMETHING MOMENTOUS THAN TO BAKE A LOVELY CAKE? A NUMBER OF LUCKY COLLEAGUES GOT TO VISIT THE LONDON

STOCK EXCHANGE (LSE) ON OUR FIRST DAY OF TRADING. WE’VE ALL SEEN THE FRANTIC YELLING AND SIGNALLING DEPICTED IN FILMS, BUT WHAT’S IT REALLY LIKE?

Manny Malik, Assistant Manager at Avonmead“I was staggered when I found out I’d won – I read the email three times just to check! We were asked to express what we loved about technology and my head went straight to how having an iPhone helps me plan my work and personal life better.

We stayed in London the night before and had a lovely dinner. After breakfast the next day a coach dropped us off at 7.30am. It wasn’t like I imagined; these days everything’s done on computers. When a new company gets listed, you sign a book, which is a hugely historical document. All of us got to sign it, and I felt really privileged.

One of the highlights for me was visiting Carphone’s Support Centre. It was so exciting as we were among the first people in the business to see the new logo.”

Ailsa Charter, Customer Experience Operations Manager, London

“It was a whirlwind, with huge press interest at the LSE. It was great to meet a number of the core team responsible for making the merger happen. I felt great

pride to see two businesses with real respect for each

other coming together, and I can only see this making life easier for the customer. Karan Patel and I were chosen to place a glass object engraved with Dixons Carphone and the date on a lectern, which signalled our shares going live.

The highlight for me was when we went to Carphone Warehouse on Oxford Street – we saw first-hand the enthusiasm of colleagues as they walked us through a demo of Pin Point.”

WHAT A BUZZ!

RICHARD HARRIS Business AdvisorWhat are you excited about at the moment?

It’s video game season. All the major publishers are releasing their games – two a week between now and the end of November. I’m also looking forward to the Xbox Project Spark coming out – it’s a Fantasy Sandbox game that allows you to create your own game universe.

Can you tell us a couple of last year’sproduct highlights?

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were released last year. We had them on pre-release and they did really well – they practically flew out the door. We’re now in the first season of new games designed specifically for these consoles. In terms of hardware, I’m interested to see how they’ve adapted to other technologies such as soundbars.

What’s new with TVs?They’re undergoing a real transformation with 4K. Ultra HD images contain over eight million individual pixels – that’s four times more detail than Full HD. Advanced processing ensures that every single pixel displays images with superb quality – and we have some that are curved.

Hate to talk about the festive seasonso soon, but Christmas is a pretty big deal for all of us – what do youreckon will be causing a stir?

Tablets – they always do whether there’s a new one out or not. Last Christmas it was the HP Slate. Not a lot of bangs and whistles, or hugely powerful, but it was £99 and came in a giftbox.

What’s the ideal present to buy? I bought my wife an iPad last Christmas, with a JBL Flip 1 speaker. The new model is the JBL Pulse – it lights up and is the size of a thick can of deodorant. Bose is a good choice too, especially their SoundLink Mini, the sound quality is unbelievable!

TALKIN’ TECH REMEMBER RICHARD AND GEMMA FROM THE FIRST ISSUE? THEY’RE TRUE TECH OBSESSIVES AND SO ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT GETTING OUR CUSTOMERS CONNECTED, WE’VE GIVEN THEM A PAGE OF THEIR OWN!

GEMMA HANSELL Geek Squad Agent

What are you excited about at the moment?

Wearables, especially the Samsung Gear Fit. It is a great little fitness watch and records your heart rate, calories in and out etc. It’s also affordable at about £170. You can also customise it by wearing different coloured straps. I’m interested to see how the Apple Watch will compare.

What did you buy last year that you still love?

PlayStation 4. I absolutely love it. I queued up at a ridiculous hour to get it and think it is truly beautiful. I haven’t got a favourite game, but I must say I’m disappointed that the release date for the new Batman game has been pushed back. Heads should roll!

DO YOU WANT TO TALK TECH IN THE NEXT CONNECTED?

WHY NOT GET IN TOUCH? JUST EMAIL [email protected]

What would you recommend parentsbuy their kids and why?

PlayStation TV or PS TV. It’s a tiny box that attaches to your TV and lets you play games and stream video whether or not you have a PS3 or PS4. It’ll cost around £85 and comes out on 1 November. Handy for the lazy teenager who wants to play games in different rooms in the house, rather than the living room!

Are you trialling anything at the moment? Yes, the Fitbit device. It’s like a fancy pedometer, but the great thing is it syncs data to your smartphone and computer. I know how many calories I’m burning and can offset this with a food app: the calorie count is then subtracted from my calorie intake for the day. I find it motivating.

Carl Doran, our Pin Point expert, says: “Handsets and contracts are long-term purchases that

are personal to the customer. The right purchase ensures you don’t pay more in the long run by going over your amount of minutes, data and texts. Pin Point’s useful as it translates customers’ needs into the best deal for them.”

HERE’S HOW:NETWORK COVERAGE CHECKER:Compares 3G and 4G data coverage to ensure customers can use their phone where they need it most.

OUR CUSTOMERS LOVE PIN POINT. AND WHY WOULDN’T THEY? THIS NIFTY TABLET-BASED ASSISTED SALES TOOL REALLY BRINGS ‘SMART COMPARISON’ TO LIFE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS. IT MAKES IT SO MUCH EASIER TO PIN POINT THE BEST DEALS FROM CARPHONE’S UNRIVALLED RANGE OF OPTIONS.

THE POWER OF PIN POINT

DATA CALCULATOR: Based on customers’ information about how they use their phone, Pin Point recommends a tariff with the right amount of data. It also gives you the option to future-proof data allowance by looking at the customer’s future needs.

RIGHT-SELL:This is where we match customers’ requirements with the best deal for them. We use terms like ‘best-match’ to sharpen our recommendation and then go one step further by highlighting deals where customers can get a lot more value for spending just a little more.

MARTIN HAIG, BRANCH MANAGER, BUCHANAN STREET & BYRES ROAD, CARPHONE, LOVES PIN POINT: “The tablet backs you up – it’s not just sales patter and there’s a new level of transparency between me and my customers. We’ve created a sale experience like no other – and no one else has it! ”

Peter Kennedy, who looks after Commercial Strategy, says: “We have something special and unique here – combining the skill and passion of our colleagues with a digital tool in a way that’s compelling to customers, driving sales of the right deal, and delivering a fantastic experience. Right-Sell compares the recommended deals in a unique personalised way and is a key differentiator for Carphone in a marketplace cluttered with comparison sites. We see consistently higher conversion rates and customer satisfaction where Pin Point is used in the sale. There are more enhancements to come over the next few weeks and we have big plans for next year.”

If there’s something you’re struggling with, chances are it might also affect some of your colleagues, so why

not raise it? The Retail Partnership Group (RPG)

is part of a network of groups across Dixons Carphone that support colleagues. Ian says: “Together with various other groups and forums, we’re here to represent everyone, and do what’s right for you as an employee. It’s not about discussing personal issues, or pointing the finger: it’s about addressing

the issues that affect us all, in a positive, constructive way.”

Senior colleagues are also fully behind a culture where all colleagues can have a say.

“Both Alan Ritchie, Managing Director, Retail and Property, UK & Ireland and Suzanne Kielty, Head of HR, UK & Ireland, came along to the last RPG gathering, and they’ll be at the next couple of meetings,” said Ian. “This is great because if there’s an immediate answer needed to an issue, people with influence can take it away and deal with it.”

As the group grows in experience following the merger, Ian looks forward to making the group even more responsive. “As just one example, Alan suggested that each meeting should focus on a meaty topic to look at the best solution. We’re working to encourage a culture that listens when an issue is raised, and responds when it’s right.”

The aim of the show was to transform the home of Jack Morris, who was born with a

rare form of muscular dystrophy called central core myopathy.

The teenager lives with his mum, Helen, and older brother Dan in a house built in the early 1990s, but he hasn’t been able to sleep in his own bedroom for some time and has instead had to sleep in a hospital bed in the living room. The DIY SOS team set about completely renovating their home to improve Jack’s quality of life.

OUR DONATIONOur Swansea Megastore donated a Samsung 48" Smart TV. This was organised by Simon Gibbins and Chris Brown, who were supported by Steve Heaps, CP13 Regional Manager and Mike Carslake, South Divisional Manager.

Colleagues Jonathan Sparkes and Darren Condon from Cardiff Customer Service Centre were on hand to install it. Julia O’Hanlon is the Site

Simon, who was there for the big reveal, said: “Helen, Dan and Jack were extremely emotional, but thrilled with what we were able to do for them. Jack was especially thrilled as now he’ll be able to play his new PS4 (donated by Sony) on his huge Samsung 48" TV. Being there and listening to Nick Knowles and Jack’s mum’s speech, I’ve never felt so proud to work for Dixons Carphone.”

GIVINGNOW THAT WE’RE IN THE FTSE 100*, WOULD-BE SHAREHOLDERS WILL BE REVIEWING OUR ANNUAL ‘SUSTAINABILITY’ REPORT, WHICH AIMS TO DEMONSTRATE HOW DIXONS CARPHONE IS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK, AN ETHICAL PLACE TO SHOP AND A WELCOME ADDITION TO ANY COMMUNITY.

SO, WHAT’S THE SUSTAINABILITY FACTOR?

» PEOPLE POWER: Establishing Dixons Carphone as a fabulous place to work with brilliant employee benefits, popular people policies, dazzling development opportunities and healthy well-being initiatives.

A great sustainability strategy encourages customer loyalty and sends a clear signal to investors that we’re here to stay.

MARATHON MAN

BRANCHING OUT FOR LOCAL HOSPICE

Adam Holland is extraordinary. At 27, he holds the GB record for the youngest person to complete 100 marathons.

He’s also just completed ten marathons in ten days, and the Great Barrow Challenge in 29 hours, 46 minutes and 19 seconds.

Not only did Adam, who’s a Warehouse Assistant at Knowhow Distribution Centre (Newark), smash his own

Thank you to everyone who supported charity activities in our offices in Brno, Czech Republic this summer.

Colleagues voted, via an e-survey, to support Kosmak Osmak and Alena Kosmakova who have disabled triplets – Vojta, David and Olda – who need difficult and expensive surgery.

Five branch managers from South Wales completed the notorious Tough Mudder assault course in August to raise money for chosen regional charity Ty Hafan, The Welsh Children’s Hospice.

Referred to as ‘one of the toughest events on the planet’, the 12-mile course includes fire, ice, mud, water, logs, barbed wire and electric shocks, as well as lots of running and climbing!

previous record, he broke that of fellow competitor Rik Vercoe last December, averaging 2 hours 58 minutes and 38

seconds per marathon. He also raised £3,000 earlier

this year for Brathay Trust – a charity with the mission to improve the life chances of children and young people.

He said: “I did a ‘10 in 10’ in May, but had an injury.

Fundraising efforts included a summer barbecue, which raised 15,022 CZK and two charity concerts, which drew on the musical talents of Dixon’s colleagues and raised 20,203 CZK. Jana Macháčková, Office Coordinator, assembled ten band members and – with five hours’ rehearsal –

coordinated two different bands to play – ‘RooFighters’ and ‘Not Ready Yet’.

CROWD SUPPORTKamila Burgetová, from the Validation team, said: “I was asked to sing by a colleague who plays the guitar - I even swapped my leave to make sure I was there! I’ve never performed for so many people I know, but it was really enjoyable and the 160-strong crowd certainly got behind us. The combined total raised was 35,225 CZK which goes a long way to supporting Kosmak’s family with the surgery.”

break mine or Rik’s record, which is what I wanted to do.”

So what did he do to relax after this great feat? “The next day I played hockey, followed by a run the day after that.” Easy to understand why his motto is: ‘Life’s a race, just enjoy the run’.

AMAZING ADAMIn total, Adam has completed 166 marathons and ultras (these are running events that are more than a marathon!).

We’ve been raising money for the charity, which provides care and support for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families, for the past three years. To date, the challenge has raised £2,284.

The money will provide the hospice with some of the latest tablets and games consoles, making sure that families can stay connected. Taking part were Justin John, Carmarthen,

6O SECOND INTERVIEW

Rugby or football? Football definitely – I’m a Gooner.

Red or white? Red.

Flat screen at home or cinema? Cinema, but of course my Samsung 55" smart curved TV is excellent (and has a better picture quality!).

Dogs or cats? Dogs – especially cocker spaniels.

Live music or home sound system? Live music – although it’s a close call as my Sonos rivals seeing the Rolling Stones ‘farewell’ tour at Wembley, 1982.

Rural retreat or city break? City break.

Favourite TV show and why: Modern Family, because it’s the only show my teenage daughters also like.

Dream dinner party guest and why: Arsene Wenger, so I could bore on about football all evening.

Favourite city and why: New York because of the energy of the place (and the Long Island Iced Teas).

Person you most admire and why: Hard to pick one person above all others, but Ellen MacArthur for both amazing solo long-distance sailing feats and also charity work since she retired from sailing, has got to be up there.

COMPETITION WINNERS

ZOE JAMES Sales Assistant at PC World in Birkenhead

ANTONY VICKERY Franchise Manager at Carphone

Warehouse Business in Poole

Zoe was shocked to win: “It’s amazing – I feel like I’ve been catapulted into the future! My husband and I don’t even have a music system and his phone doesn’t take photographs! There was a lot of whooping going on when everything arrived!”

Zoe’s most excited about the Samsung M5 and M7 Multi-room Speakers and the Samsung Hub. “I like a variety of music, but the first thing I’ll be playing will be Dean Martin, followed by Glen Miller.”

Antony was at a stag party when he found out he’d won. “I was having a good time but

was quite looking forward to getting home and setting it all up!”

Antony loves the Galaxy S5: “It’s well-built and feels solid and premium. The Google Voice feature really takes voice control to the next level. You can send texts without even touching the phone, and the translation from voice to text is immaculate.”

The best bit about the prize, says Antony, is ease of use and connectivity. “If you decide to watch a music video on Vevo, for example, it automatically connects to the soundbar.

“It’s completely wireless, with minimal set-up, and something I’d heartily recommend to all customers, even those who are nervous about connected technology.”
