New Carnival Booth Revealed The Gifted and Talented 5th grade class of Monument Ridge Elementary are the winners of our Carnival Booth Con-test. These guys and gals came up with a booth they call Sports Bounce. None of these kids have been to a carnival before but are looking forward to this year. We had 20 entries trying to win and received some great ideas. The winners receive $1,000 to buy school gym equipment and the runners up receive a few of the attached Monopoly Money, convertible at carnival for $1 worth of game play.

Sports Bounce Booth cre-ators from Monument Ridge Elementary (above) submitted the winning en-try. Teacher Meredith Thornhill’s class posed with Dan Sites and Austin Erickson. The prize money for some students is at right.

Random Acts Inspire Creativity Several Lions had unique stories to tell about their use of the $100 for a random act. Past President Gregg Palmer, who introduced this tradition back in 2004, was in an auto parts store where he watched a young man counting out a pile of change to be able to pay for some new brakes to install himself. When Gregg approached him in the parking lot to give him the $100 bill, the young man was overcome with emotion. Sarah Colvin is a CASA volunteer, who are advocates for children in the court system. She gave her $100 to a grandmoth-er who is also in CASA for gifts for the kids she works for. Andrew Weber gave his $100 to a man who has struggled with employment and finances, and whose wife just learned she has cancer. He hoped to pick up his spirits this Christmas with the gift. Karl Clemons gave his $100 bill to Samantha, a single mother of two so she could buy food and Christmas gifts for her two children. She told Karl “God bless the Lions.” Lori Mizushima, along with some other Lions, got new tires for Sandra who was unable to pay for them. Lore got Big O to sell them to Lori and the other members at cost. Big O added a swag bag of treats for the kids, and then the Lions added a $200 gift card from City Market for groceries. Sandra also expressed deep appreciation to the GJ Lions. The GJ Lions are well-known for their major projects around the community, but in 2004 Gregg intro-duced this new way to impact area with these smaller-scale individual efforts to spread the spirit of the sea-son.

No First Friday in January There won’t be a First Friday event for January to cour-

age everyone to spend more time selling tickets. That official decision was announced by Austin Erick-son, the First Friday guru.

In 1928-29, John C. Page was President of the GJ Lions. In the 1920s, Page was becoming a recognized expert in water and reclamation, and in 1929 he was appointed second in command for the new project that would eventually be named Hoover Dam. Early in 1936, Page3s was promoted to Engineering Manager for the US Bureau of Reclamation and by 1937 was appointed by Pres. Roosevelt as the Commissioner for the Bureau. He spent 7 years running the agency. Page’s legacy as a water manager began with Highline Canal in Grand Junction, and later Hoover Ham, Lake Mead, Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. His visions became a reality and the city built to house the work-ers for the Hoover Dam was later named in his honor as Page, Ariz.
