Let’s Meet Valarie: Valarie spent many years in her community as a coach and leader of house league sports and girl guides. When her daughters entered high school, Valarie searched for a more varied and substantial way to give back and volunteer. When asked to join Rotary she knew she had found exactly what she was looking for. A member of the Whitby Rotary Club, Valarie was club president in 2008-2009. Since then, she has held various other positions within the club and in District 7070: an Assistant District Governor 2009-2012, a member of the District Long-range planning committee and Rotary at Work District Committee Chair. Rotary offers personal growth and opportunity to its members. Where would you get a chance to go to India and vaccinate children against Polio? Lead a team of mental health professionals to Sydney, Australia as a Vocational Training Team leader? Visit an orphanage in Kenya and also help establish a micro-credit project for women to work? Valarie has had all of these Rotary experiences and believes that the “value proposition” is key to attracting new younger members to Rotary and motivating current members to continue their good work. Married to Mark, they live in Ashburn and have two daughters, Meghan and Coleen. Mark is also a Rotarian with the Whitby Rotary Club and a Champion of the Rotary at Work Program. The goal of Ontario’s Rotary at Work is to help Ontarians who have a disability find meaningful work. Hiring people who have a disability is much more than ‘doing the right thing’. It’s good for business. Currently Rotary at Work, a vocational service district initiative is active in many Rotary Districts across Canada. Valarie and Mark have been Tim Horton Franchisees since 1995 with six locations in the Scarborough area. Their company has won numerous awards including the Canadian Manufacturers Association Award for Innovators of the Year 2010, awarded for their hiring practices to employ individuals with disabilities. Valarie looks forward to her role as this year’s District Governor.

Let’s Meet Brian: Brian Thompson often says that "Rotary is one of the best things that ever happened to me". Brian was born in Toronto and grew up in Don Mills. He received his Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Toronto and became a Professional Engineer working in the nuclear industry for Ontario Hydro. He was also a Commercial Pilot, working part-time as a flying instructor at Toronto Airways in Buttonville, Ontario. Later, he switched to Public Relations, based at Pickering Nuclear, where he hosted many local and international guests regarding Canada's nuclear energy program. He travelled Southern Ontario, visiting classrooms, service clubs and other groups as a guest speaker. Brian served the Canadian Nuclear Association in Ottawa as Director of Communications, working in Government and Media Relations, and finished his career with Ontario Power Generation at Darlington. He switched hats again, and now produces corporate and industrial movies for various organizations, large and small. During more than three decades in Rotary, Brian has served in every avenue of service at the club level. He was one of the first in his club to visit Consuelo in the Dominican Republic to investigate opportunities to do “hands on” work. At the District level, Brian has served on the Foundation and Public Relations committees; he was District Chair of the Group Reps (now called Assistant Governors), Chair of Youth Services (New Generations), and led a GSE Team to New Zealand. He is a member of the District Rotary at Work, Membership and Long Range Planning Committees, and has served as an AG for the last 4 years. In the community, Brian has had several leadership roles volunteering at his church, and has served on committees at local Chambers of Commerce, writing two Chamber policies on nuclear energy in the process. Brian enjoys photography, cinematography, classic movies and entertaining friends. Brian is married to Karen, a Registered Nurse who continues to work in the volunteer sector. Some of that work has involved collaboration with Whitby Sunrise Rotary Club in Consuelo. Karen and Brian enjoy travelling, tennis, and relaxing at their chalet in Hidden Valley, Huntsville. They have two grown children and five grandchildren, in whom they delight.

Let’s Meet Rotary International President Ron D. Burton Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA (2013-14)

Ron Burton, the RI president-elect, retired as president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. in 2007. He is a member of the American Bar Association and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Ron is a founder and past president of the Norman Public School Foundation, and founder and past board member of the Norman Community Foundation. He was vice president of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award. A Rotarian since 1979, he has served as RI director, Rotary Foundation trustee vice chair, International Assembly moderator, committee chair, Permanent Fund national adviser, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, and aide to the president. Ron has received the RI Service Above Self Award and the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award and International Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and his wife, Jetta, have two children and three grandchildren. Ron Burton asks all Rotarians to Engage Rotary, Change Lives in 2013-14. He unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2013 International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, the annual training event for incoming District Governors, in January 2013. “If we really want to take Rotary service forward, then we must make sure that every single Rotarian has the same feeling about Rotary that each one of us here has today,” Burton said. “We need to make sure that every Rotarian has a meaningful role to play, that they’re all making a contribution, and that their contribution is valued.” Burton said the July 2013 launch of The Rotary Foundation’s new grant model, Future Vision, makes it an exciting time to be a Rotarian. He said the new grant model, which has been used by about 100 pilot districts since 2010, represents a new era for the Foundation, and will help Rotarians get excited about Rotary’s ability to change lives. “It takes everything that is wonderful about Rotary and raises it to a new level — by encouraging bigger, more sustainable projects while providing increased flexibility for local projects, both of which address the needs of the community being served,” he said. Burton asked the incoming district governors to take the lead in helping their clubs through the transition, with the assistance of their district Rotary Foundation chairs, who also attended the assembly this year. The training sessions are focusing heavily on equipping these leaders to go back to their districts as experts on the new grant model. Before the assembly, Burton asked each of the incoming governors to make a donation in their name to The Rotary Foundation in order to demonstrate leadership by example. At the assembly, he announced that all 537 governors-elect had complied; along with donations from all RI Board members and Foundation Trustees, the contributions totalled US$675,412. “Now, I have to believe that some of this is money that The Rotary Foundation probably would not have received had I not asked. And I think that this is an important lesson” he said. “If you want somebody else to do something, you can just sit around and wait for them to get the idea, or you can ask.” Burton applied that lesson also to membership development, which he insisted is the responsibility of every Rotarian. He told the audience that although he had been an active member of the Key Club, a youth program of Kiwanis International, he went on to join Rotary simply because the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, invited him to. “You have to ask,” he said. But Burton emphasized that the job doesn’t end when a new member joins: “It’s not done until that new member is engaged in Rotary, inspired by Rotary, and uses the power of Rotary service to change lives.”

The Rotary world comes to Lisbon for the opening of the 2013 convention By Arnold R. Grahl Rotary News -- 23 June 2013

Several centuries ago, Portuguese explorers set sail from Lisbon to explore the world over the seas. On Sunday, June 23, 2013, the world, or at least representative parts of it, came to Lisbon, as Rotarians from more than 225 countries and geographic areas gathered for the opening plenary session of the 2013 Rotary International Convention, Lisbon: A Harbor for Peace. Peace took center stage all day. During his opening remarks, RI President Sakuji Tanaka, who selected Peace Through Service as this year’s RI theme, shared how he came to make a connection between peace and service. He recalled that he was still very young when he heard the radio broadcast by Japanese Emperor Hirohito announcing the end of World War II. “Until that day, the country had been working together to win the war. Now, we would work together to rebuild. And we would work together to build a new identity for Japan: one that was committed to peace,” he said. Tanaka said when he joined the Rotary Club of Yashio, Japan, years later, he learned about the idea of Service Above Self.“Through Rotary, I realized that I was working to make other people’s lives better. I wanted to serve my customers, not only for my own profit, but so that they would be happier from my work, and my employees would also have better lives,” he said. “Now, I see my business in a very different way. And I see Rotary service as an idea that is not limited to my Rotary club. Everything we do for other people helps to make the world a better place.” Tanaka said that by meeting basic human needs and engaging in international service projects, Rotary builds peace daily. He said he has seen the many different ways that Rotarians build peace through service during his year as president. “Here in Lisbon, at this Rotary convention, we have the chance to experience the world as it could be: with people from every continent united to make their world a better place,” he said. “Here, we see how little our differences matter. Here, we focus on what is truly important: what we can do to help others live better and happier lives.” Portugal’s Minister of Solidarity and Social Security, Pedro Mota Soares, praised Rotarians for their peacemaking efforts and for tackling large causes like the eradication of polio. “What is important to Rotary is important to Portugal, it is important to any country, and it is important to the world,” he said. “You put your interest aside for the benefit of the world. It is something we as politicians should do more often.”

The quartet Il Divo, composed of Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, French pop artist Sebastien Izambard, and American tenor David Miller, performed at the conclusion of the plenary. Buhler noted that the members of the group, being from four different countries, share Rotary’s understanding of the importance of setting aside personal differences to work for the common good. After the plenary, Bill Thompson, a member of the Rotary Club of Port Orange South Daytona, Florida, said he felt the emphasis on peace is very appropriate. “Especially given the conflict that is going on in the world, to have an organization like Rotary making such an influence is very gratifying,” he said. Assam Musonza, a member of the Rotary Club of Gweru, Zimbabwe, referred to the conflict in his own country. “Peace is quite an important theme,” he said. “Peace is not just about villages not fighting each other. It’s about peace within us. Because when we have peace within ourselves, we do not want to fight with each other.”

Rotary and Gates Foundation extend fundraising agreement to end polio New match arrangement could raise US$525 million for global eradication effort LISBON, Portugal (25 June 2013) Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced an extension of their existing fundraising partnership that could generate up to US$525 million in new money for polio eradication as the global effort to end this crippling disease enters its critical endgame phase.

Under the new agreement, announced before an audience of more than 20,000 Rotary members from 160 countries gathered in Lisbon for the humanitarian group’s annual convention, the Gates Foundation will match 2 for 1 every new dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication up to $35 million per year through 2018. “When Rotarians combine the passion for service along with the power of a global network, you are unstoppable, and the Gates Foundation is proud to partner with you,” said Gates Foundation CEO Jeff Raikes in a video message to convention attendees. “We will combine the strength of Rotary’s network with our resources and together with the other partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative we will not only end a disease, we will change the face of public health forever.” All funds raised will support crucial immunization activities in polio-affected countries. These are part of a comprehensive six-year plan to eradicate both wild poliovirus and vaccine-derived virus announced in April by the eradication initiative during the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi. At the Summit, global leaders and individual philanthropists signaled their confidence in the endgame plan by pledging $4 billion, nearly three-quarters of the plan’s projected $5.5 billion cost. They also called upon additional donors to commit the additional $1.5 billion needed to ensure eradication. Since then, the government of Australia, and now Rotary, are committing funding toward the remaining $1.5 billion gap through 2018. Rotary and the Gates Foundation have partnered on polio eradication since 2007, when the Gates Foundation gave Rotary a $100 million challenge grant for polio eradication, increasing it to $355 million in 2009. Rotary agreed to raise $200 million in matching funds by June 2012. When the organization achieved its fundraising goal six months ahead of schedule, the Gates Foundation granted Rotary an additional $50 million. To date, Rotary clubs worldwide have contributed $1.2 billion to the polio eradication effort. “We’re at a critical point in the fight to end polio,” said Past Rotary Vice President John Germ, who leads the organization’s fundraising efforts for polio eradication. “We must capitalize on this progress to finish the job. We have a robust plan, the tools to reach each child, and with funding in place, we can win against this devastating disease. Rotary and its partners remain committed to a polio-free world.” Germ also announced a new contribution of $1 million from Sir Emeka Offor, a Nigerian Rotarian and philanthropist, as one of the first major gifts to be matched under the new agreement with Gates. Rotary helped launch the eradication initiative in 1988, along with spearheading partners the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since then, new polio cases have plunged by more than 99 percent worldwide, from 350,000 cases annually to just 223 in 2012. Only three countries remain polio-endemic: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. However, every nation remains at risk for infections “imported” from the endemic countries. Europe has been polio-free since 2002. To access broadcast quality video footage and still photos of Rotary members immunizing children against polio available go to: Media Center.

A letter From Julia Ridley - member of The Rotary District 7070 Vocational Training Team “Our 3 week trip to Nagoya, Japan was a wonderful opportunity. Palliative care takes pride in being a multidisciplinary specialty, with teamwork being a core value; teams from both countries modeled this principle. For example, the Canadian team, with a spiritual care provider, nurse, nurse practitioner, and physician, all from different areas in Toronto. This allowed us to grow and share knowledge in three ways: from one another, from our Japanese colleagues, and from the cultural and societal experience. The passion and compassion shown by the palliative health care providers we met with in Japan was inspiring. I learned a lot about care in a very different cultural context from the multicultural mosaic here in Toronto. Certainly there are many more similarities than differences, especially in the challenges faced in caring for patients with advanced and terminal illness. The differences, particularly in terms of communication, approach to treatment and decision making me to reflect on my own practice, and make changes as a result. The hosting Rotary District, homestay families, and VTT committee members in Nagoya made the trip an immersive process that I will never forget; we were kept busy but happy, including a weekend trip to Kyoto, the cultural center of Japan, spending time discussing daily life with our host families, and being treated to amazing meals on a daily basis.” With thanks, Julia

A Letter from Jonah Brotman - District 7070’s Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholar: From Gene Burns, Chair of District 7070 Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarships Jonah Brotman, our District 7070 Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholar was very busy in Haiti last year at this time, and now he is in England studying at the London School of Economics since September 2013. We asked Jonah to bring us up to date on his year so far. Here is a letter that he sent to Gene Burns: Hi Gene, Hope you're doing well. Just wanted to let you know about a really exciting development on my end. My team got selected to participate in the Hult Prize Global Final, which means we're heading to Boston for the summer to participate in an Accelerator program. In September, we'll be pitching to the Clinton Global Initiative for a 1 in 6 chance at $1 million USD. Pretty exciting right? For more info on our project, you can click here: www.sokotext.com. So thank you a million times again for the support from the district to allow me to go to Dubai. Please spread this information widely. (Note: On the sokotext website, Jonah is the one on the right with the beard) I also wanted to let you know about a fundraiser the Global Grant Scholars here in the UK are doing. On June 15-16, a small group of Rotary International scholars from around Great Britain and Ireland are joining together to take on the UK's Three Peaks Challenge. In 24 hours, we will attempt to hike the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales. In preparation for this feat as a team, we'll be raising both funds and awareness for ShelterBox. As a team, our goal is to raise £5,000 for ShelterBox. These funds will allow ShelterBox to deliver emergency shelter and other lifesaving equipment to 8 families who have lost everything following a disaster. We would appreciate any donations you can give to this cause! If you or anyone in District 7070 would interested in supporting me, my page can be found here: http://www.justgiving.com/Jonah-Brotman. Thanks again and looking forward to hearing from you. Jonah

30th Edition of Camp Enterprise – May 9 – 12, 2103 From: Maureen Royle, Rotary Club of Alliston The 30th Camp Enterprise, a joint venture of 11 Rotary clubs from District 7070 and 7080 was another success. A total of 64 students, whose attendance was fully subsidized by their Rotary clubs, participated in interactive activities led by business and private enterprise leaders from many different business areas. Started in Canada in 1976, by the Youth Service Committee of the Rotary Club of Toronto. Camp Enterprise is a 31/2 day program for high school students. The objective of Camp Enterprise is to expose, explore, and spur the student’s imagination on the whole subject of business and private enterprise.

Wellington– A Community and Rotary Club for All Seasons From : Sharon Campbell, Rotary Club of Wellington Located on the south west shore of Prince Edward County, on eastern Lake Ontario, Wellington has a population of about 1700, with fluctuations as snow birds go south in winter and tourists visit in summer. Wellington Rotary has thirty-six enthusiastic, dedicated members. A 7:07am start time for our Tuesday meetings requires dedication! A wonderful natural feature of the village is a long, sandy public beach, enjoyed by both the locals and our many visitors. In 2003, Wellington Rotary identified an opportunity to make the beach more attractive and more accessible, and the planning got under way. In 2005, following a public information meeting to present a model, and securing municipal, provincial and federal support, the task of raising the funds began. Grants from all levels of government, donations from foundations, local businesses and individuals, aggressive fund raising by the club and generous donations of volunteer labour resulted in Rotary members and a local seniors woodworking club completing a 1200 ft accessible boardwalk along the beach and harbour channel, a 900 ft pathway, twelve viewing benches, twelve picnic tables and thirteen interpretive signs on pedestals. The value of the project was approximately $225,000. Hundreds of hours of research by our secretary, resulted in discovering sources of grants and the comprehensive information on the interpretive signs about the history, flora and fauna of the area.

PHOTO 1 Wellington Rotary Members at Work: Completed in 2009, this project received a Rotary District 7070 award. The beach has become a popular year round attraction and at the official opening in 2009, the municipality of Prince Edward County recognized the club’s efforts by naming the area the Wellington Rotary Beach. In 2008, a municipal feasibility study determined that the beloved Wellington DukeDome (Wellington Community Centre) required replacement for safety, accessibility, capacity and comfort reasons. The Wellington Dukes and their Ontario Junior A Hockey League schedule are the heart of Wellington life for many months, so fund raising to meet the local responsibility of $1.5M began. Fortunately, Infra-Structure grants were available and both provincial and federal governments contributed generously to the total cost of the project. Our Rotary pledge of $50,000 was a major single contribution and resulted in a multi-purpose room, capacity of 60, being named the Wellington Rotary Room. In addition, club members installed 500 plaques on seats in the arena, earning $2500 which we have donated to the new Wellington Community Centre for the purchase

of exercise equipment. The community surpassed its target of $1.5M in just a little over a year. PHOTO 2 Rotarians Art Sinclair and John Inwood installing plaques. Photo: Rick Conroy, Wellington Times Some of the features of the new centre are seating capacity of over 1000, an NHL sized ice surface, an indoor rubber surfaced walking track, two exercise areas, a meeting hall with capacity of 600. It is a real tribute to the energies of a small community. In early January, the Memorial Arena in the city of Belleville, a neighbour to the north, lost its ice surface. The Belleville and District Girls Minor Hockey Association were to host a tournament of 88 teams, using the Memorial Arena, on the same weekend that the old DukeDome was to cease operation.

The two municipalities reached agreement to allow the tournament to use the DukeDome to ensure enough ice surfaces were available. For three days, eighteen Wellington Rotary volunteers contributed sixty-two hours of time to provide canteen services for the tournament, which attracted participants from Ontario, Quebec and New York State. Photo: Kathleen Sabyan, Wellington Times We undertook these projects to enhance our community and to make it a better place to live, for ourselves and for our visitors. The fellowship that we enjoy and the sense of satisfaction that we gain during these times make us even stronger supporters of the values of Rotary. Wellington Rotary doesn’t just donate, we participate.

REMINDER: INTEROTA 2014: Toronto and Montreal are THE HOSTS - Rotaractors from around the world will be in Canada

Interota, a worldwide Rotaract meeting held every three years, is organized and sponsored by Rotaractors. It provides our New Generations participants with a forum for sharing ideas, concerns, and experiences with others from around the world. Participants are also treated to sightseeing and other cultural events throughout the week-long event.

During the 2011 Interota Conference in Hurghada, Egypt, Rotaractors from Districts 7040, 7070, and 7080 launched a bid to host the next Interota in 2014, between Toronto and Montréal. It was a tough competition with 6 other countries competing: Hong Kong, Poland, Ghana, Lebanon, Greece, and Nigeria. During the conference, Canadian delegates promoted the bid by wearing Canadian t-shirts, which were signed by conference delegates from across the globe, they gave out Canadian pins, did a formal bid presentation, and used social media as a key tool to engage the entire Rotaract community. On November 22, 2011, the winning bid was announced and we are proud to say that Canada will be hosting Interota in 2014!

The Interota Organizing Committee has been hard at work developing its vision for the international conference, finding a strong group of Rotaractors to be a part of the organization of this great event, and promoting the conference to the Rotaractors around the world. The committee's unique vision for the conference places an emphasis on leadership development and personal growth through cultural experiences. At the end of the conference, delegates will come away having developed their leadership skills, learned something about themselves, created new and strong friendships, and experienced a culture different from their own. The Interota 2014 Organizing Committee is extremely thankful to Rotarians in Districts 7040 & 7070 for their tremendous support! They look forward to working with each district to ensure that Canada is one of the best hosts Interota has ever had! For more information and to support the Interota Conference, please visit www.interota2014.com or e-mail the committee at [email protected]. From: Andrea Tirone, Co-Chair, Interota 2014

BOWMANVILLE ROTARY AT WORK IN OUR COMMUNITY Reprinted from Clarington This Week Newspaper: June 12, 2013 This year marked the first year that the Bowmanville Rotary Club successfully completed two Food Packaging Events. The first taking place at Clarington Collegiate & Secondary School during October on “Applefest Saturday”. 120 community citizens and Rotarians aged from 8 to 80 gathered at the school and in 4 hours packaged over 26,000 meals which were delivered to Haiti. More recently May 1, 2013, saw over 75 civic minded Bowmanville High School students gather in the gym

and in less than three hours packaged over 9,000 meals having raised in advance $1600 to provide the food ingredients. The Bowmanville Rotary Club through the International Committee formed a partnership with “Kids Against Hunger Canada” becoming the “First Satellite” in our Rotary District 7070. “Kids Against Hunger Canada” packages highly nutritious, lifesaving meals for starving children and malnourished children and their families in developing countries and Canada. The goal of the organization is for its meals to provide a stable nutritional base from which recipient families can move their families from starvation to self sufficiency. “Kids Against Hunger Canada” accomplishes this by mobilizing the energy and caring of Canadian students, teens, and adults on behalf of hungry children around the world. “Kids Against Hunger Canada” seeks to end the literal hunger of children receiving the meals, but also satisfies a hunger among prosperous Canadians – a hunger for meaning and contribution.” Plans are currently afoot to convene at least four food packaging events in Bowmanville, Ajax, Whitby and Port Perry in the 2013-2014 Rotary Year. Discussions followed presentations made to the Rotary Clubs in the area last year leading to the planning referred to earlier. In addition interest from clubs in Belleville, Alliston, Toronto and Ottawa continues to grow as word spreads across the District testifying to the success of accomplishing the goals of the program which are: • to bring awareness to the critical issue hunger and starvation locally, nationally and globally and to support local food banks by providing packaged, healthy meals. • to provide an opportunity for community volunteers to work with the local Rotary Club to bring this project to fruition • to provide the local Rotaract Club, at the University Oshawa Institute of Technology/Durham College a focus for their fundraising and volunteer activities • to work with other Rotary Clubs to build inter-Club capacity • to feed hungry children in a country where the need is great For the future our long range goal is to have every high school in Bowmanville, the Durham Region, District 7070 aware of the program and participating directly or indirectly in a Food Packaging Event. For more information visit www.kahcanada.ca or contact • Fred Mandryk via e-mail [email protected] of the Bowmanville Rotary Club • Wayne McConnachie via e-mail [email protected] Looking forward to seeing you at the next food packaging event or better still arrange to have one with your school or organization. It’s easy as 1-2-3. If you have the desire to help, we’ll help you organize the event and take care of the details Here’s a Club Project for you : Boost Rotary’s Public Image

Our request is to ask for a total of $250 from your clubs ($50-100 per participating club). This will allow us to start our float on time, and we are trying to gather these funds by June 1st. The float is 100% funded by voluntary contributions from interested Rotary clubs and Rotarians, and our committee is also 100% committed both financially and in donating our time to make the float something we as Rotarians , can be proud of. This year's Float theme is "Engage Rotary/Change Lives" which is RI President Elect Ron Burton's theme. HIKE THE GRAND CANYON TO END POLIO - A ROTARY CHALLENGE A Letter from PDG Bill Patchett, District 7070 Rotary Foundation Chair My Fellow Rotarians, We are presenting a unique opportunity to combine fun, fitness, and fellowship with a fundraising effort to contribute to ending polio. Rotarian, and Whitby Rotary Club Past President Michael Finigan has developed a series of Adventure Treks with all of the above ingredients along with the heart pounding exhilaration of achieving what few even attempt. The most popular of all is the Grand Canyon Hike, which PURSUIT TRAINING has perfected over the past few years. Certainly a "bucket list" worthy experience. With a number of Rotarians expressing interest, Mike, along with fellow Whitby Rotarian and Past President Ray Richardson, have added a fundraising component and customized the program to include a contribution to help

end polio. The program includes a fully inclusive ground package, (airfare not included), and 5 days culminating in the Grand Canyon Hike. (see http://www.pursuittraining.ca/about-mike-2/hike-the-grand-canyon/ ) At $3000.00, the program includes a contribution of $500.00 to the polio effort, and remains very competitive with similar adventure offerings in the market. Contributions are credited to the member clubs. HIKE THE GRAND CANYON TO END POLIO - A ROTARY CHALLENGE This is a challenge for Rotary Clubs to promote this unique opportunity as a vehicle to END POLIO. This will have great appeal to those who enjoy adventure and physical challenge. Clubs are encouraged to use the hike as a means to raise awareness and funds while achieving your club's polio target. Clubs can generate a $5000.00 contribution + matching Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grant funds for a group of 10 delegates (Rotarians and friends). Further, clubs are encouraged to use the program as a lever to raise additional funds through sponsorships, individual endorsements (Like marathons), and other means. The hike is targeted to take place in early October when weather is most accommodating, and coincidentally, a few weeks in advance of the District Conference, a timely opportunity to add excitement and profile to the polio objective, not to mention the bragging rights! Please contact Mike Finigan for details, and to discuss how this unique opportunity can be implemented in your club as a means to raise much needed funds for polio in an exciting, and different way. Fundraising, with enthusiasm! Contact info for Mike Finigan - [email protected] or (905) 213-6013 William R. How to Raise Funds to End Polio As Rotarians we are fortunate in that we have the ability to multiply our raised dollars to better impact our projects. Included in the Grand Canyon Experience is a $500 contribution to End Polio, meaning that as a group we will raise $5,000 - $6,000 per trip. These funds are also eligible to be matched through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and commitment to Rotary. What we are asking of our participants is to help raise more funds to contribute to the eligible matching grants. Upon registering for the Grand Canyon Experience, we can help you request your Rotary club to match your $500 contribution to End of Polio. With the help of you and our Rotary Clubs, this has the potential to have the impact of $20,000 - $24,000 to End Polio! This is Your Opportunity to Serve – To Volunteer and Serve on a District Committee Just as no Rotary Club can function effectively without a smooth working organization supporting its President, so too for the District. In this day and age, a District Governor cannot possibly do that which is necessary to achieve the maximum in club activity in all five avenues of service without the enthusiastic dedication and support of many Rotarians working in a district team or organization. The role of a District Committee is to assist the District Governor in a particular sphere of Rotary activity. The District Governor will have formulated plans for activity in certain areas in accordance with directions received from the President and Board of Directors of Rotary International and from his or her own plans for the district. The committees are responsible for assisting the clubs in achieving Rotary International, district and club goals. And this is where you come in. Many District Committees are looking for members to help. And you are the one who can help. Members of the District Committees are Rotarians just like you and me. We attend the weekly meetings of our Rotary Clubs, we participate in Fundraising events, and in local and international Community Service projects,

we contribute to The Rotary Foundation, we go to the District Assembly, and The District Conference when we can. And this is where you come in. It is time for you to take that next step in your Rotary life and help out on a District Committee. Most District Committees meet about once a month, for a few hours where you will learn more about that Committee and be able to offer your talents, and expertise or just plain readiness to help out. Connect with the Committee Chair TODAY. Find out what each Committee does and see if it right for you. See if you can help at the Committee Level. They are willing to have you help out.
