In the Interim I hope that you have a wonderful Candidating Week (30 April thru 7 May) with Revs. Anya and Scott Sammler‐Michael!  I am excited for all of you.  While you are getting to know Revs. Anya and Scott, through Sunday worship and weekday social events, I will be entirely out of sight and they will be your ministers that week.  At the Special Congregational meeting following the second Sunday service on 7 May, the members of UUCM will vote on whether to call Revs. Anya and Scott as your new settled co‐ministers.    

I will resume my regular ministerial duties on 9 May and serve as your Interim Senior Minister through the end of July.  My last Sunday in the pulpit will be 18 June, after which I will attend the Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly in New Orleans (19‐25 June).    

I will take the month of July as vacation, during which I will be available only in emergencies.  In the event of a pastoral or congregational crisis, the Board President and Vice President will contact me and, together, we will determine whether I need to return from my vacation.  

Many of you have asked about my future plans.  I have been asked to serve as the Developmental Minister at the UU Fel‐lowship of Raleigh, NC.  I am excited about the possibilities that this new opportunity holds for me and it will be nice to live closer to many dear friends.  

That said, I look forward to serving you well and faithfully in the remaining time that we have together.

Shared Ministry My ministry with you is coming to a close at the end of June. It has been a rich and full 17 years. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of your lives. Rob and I will be moving to Long Beach, CA, south of Los Angeles and north and west of Orange County (Anaheim‐Disneyland). Old‐timers will remember that I relocated here from southern California. I have family from LA to San Diego so it will be a homecoming for me. My hus‐band, Rob Gordon, who is proudly from the Bronx, has dreamed of living in SoCal since he was 12 years old. This will be a dream come true for him.  Rob is a freelance copywriter and will continue to do that while enjoying the sunshine, swimming and yes, biking. I am going to take some transition time before beginning any‐thing new. This will allow me to find a new home and set up household. I know it is a cli‐ché but I want to spend time with my family and reacquaint myself with the area. I will connect with area UU ministers, religious educators and join a congregation.  It is hard to say goodbye but you have so much to look forward to ‐‐ candidating week with your ministerial candidates Revs. Anya and Scott Sammler‐Michael! I hope you take every opportunity to spend time with them April 30‐May 7. And, the Board has just posted job notices for a new Director of Religious Education and a Director of Membership & Congrega‐tional Life! Please spread the word. It is time for renewal at UUCM and these new folks will help you do just that.   I hope we will connect in these final two months to say what is on our hearts as we all get ready for a new chapter in our lives.

April was a beautifully busy month with Coming of Age graduation, Blue Jean Sunday and the start of Religious Edu‐cation registration!  May is gearing up to be filled with equally exciting things starting with candidating week. R.E. will have the first opportunity to meet with Revs. Anya and Scott.  There will be a pizza and Game night in Fletcher Hall on April 30th from 5‐7 pm! Please join us.

Ministerial Transition Team

Why do people leave the UUCM? One of the goals for the Ministerial Transition Team is to illuminate our congrega‐tion’s identity ‐‐ our strengths, needs and challenges. As part of that work, we surveyed former members to learn why they chose to leave the congregation.  

Although it’s often assumed that many people leave when their children finish religious education, we found that the reasons are much more complex. Rev. Judy Tomlinson's research revealed that over the past 10 years, the parents of 60% of our Coming of Age graduates have remained active in the congregation.  

Below are highlights from the survey, which had 17 respondents.   

Why did you join the UUCM? Top 4 results (respondents could choose all that apply) 65% ‐ Congregation’s position on social justice issues 59% ‐ Quality of sermons 53% ‐ Education for children 53% ‐ Location

Ministerial Search Committee By the time you receive this newsletter, it will be almost time for Candidating Week. For the Search Committee, this is the culmination of almost a year of work, with many laughs, some tears, hours of meetings, and many cans of La Croix grapefruit‐flavored sparkling water.   If we have a successful vote to call Reverends Anya and Scott on May 7, it will be the end of our adventure. The Committee has really bonded and we will miss each other a lot, including Connie’s emojis and Peter’s puns.    We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the Candidating Week events. Please sign up via the Google Form if you haven’t done so already (you can contact us if you need the link).   In the meantime, though, we are feeling philosophical. We are so grateful that our clear top choice candidate (unanimous across the committee) felt the same way about UUCM. We hope that you will find Reverends Scott and Anya as wise, charming, and energizing as we do. It’s exciting to think about starting a new and wonderful chapter in our congregation’s history with them in August 2017.  Just a quick reminder that Reverends Scott and Anya are candidates to share a single full‐time position. Al‐though they are two people, they are not a replacement for both our senior minister and our associate minister. Instead, we are moving forward with the Board’s interim staffing plan announced in January 2017. Reverend Judy’s Associate Minister role will be filled on an interim basis by two part‐time new hires, a Director of Reli‐gious Education (in addition to Iris) and a Director of Membership & Congregational Life. For more details on this plan, see the FAQs on our website.   With gratitude from your ministerial search committee, Peter Arian, John Carlton, Nancy Felix, Erin Krupa, Lawrence Ramsey, Chelsea Vaughn Showalter and Connie Thames ‐ search@uumontclair.org 

On That Note…News from our Music Director

The miracle of spring never ceases to amaze me. No matter how many times I have seen it before, watching seemingly barren earth and dead trees come back to life fills me with wonder and hope.  Trying to turn this into a metaphor for the state of our congregation would be a pretty strained exercise. Most of our ministries have continued to flourish during the interim period. Still, after a lot of patient waiting and hard work, the arrival of our new ministers feels like the reward we have been hoping for. The schedule for candidating week is packed 

with events that promise to be engaging, uplifting, and fun; and I hope you will attend as many of them as pos‐sible. It is one of numerous ways in which we can express our gratitude to the ministerial search committee.

Frequently Asked Questions  

What are UUCM’S office hours?  Our office hours are Monday thru Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.   How do I schedule a meeting or reserve a space? All requests must go through our Administrator Danielle Carlo  at  admin@uumontclair.org or  ext. 12. Please  let us know  the  time,  the purpose or group and anything needed for set‐up.   

How do I schedule a meeting with a minister? Please contact our ministers directly if you wish to make an  appointment  to meet with  them  as  they maintain their own schedules. Please know that our ministers do not schedule appointments on Mondays.  Rev. Osterman: Justin.osterman@uumontclair.org  Rev. Tomlinson: judyatomlinson@gmail.com  Where can I park? Although we do not have our own parking lot, there are several  parking  lots  or  decks within  easy walking  dis‐tance.  For  an  interactive map  of  lots  and  decks,  visit: en.parkopedia.com/parking/montclair_nj/Parking. Park‐ing is also permitted at metered spots on the street and is  free  after 7:00 PM  and on  Sunday. The driveway  at UUCM  is  reserved  for employees during  the week and on Sunday for those needing handicapped access ONLY.   How can I get a Member Directory? We  continuously  update  our  member  directory  for UUCM.  If  you  are  a member  and  need  a  copy,  let  us know  and we  can  email  you  one  or  send  you  a  hard copy in the mail. Please let us know when any revisions are made to your address, phone number, and/or email address so we can have the most current information in our system.  Can I get some photocopies made? We will be more  than happy  to make  copies  for  your UUCM‐related  committee,  group  or  event.  Since  the staff is most familiar with our machines, we ask that you submit  all  requests  to  the  office  during  regular  office hours and we will be happy to assist you.   Who do I talk to about my Annual Pledge?  Inquiries  regarding  your  Pledge  go  to  our  Bookkeeper Emilia Sadonis who is in the office on Tuesdays and Fri‐days  from  10:00  AM  to  4:00  PM.  Call  or  email accountant@uumontclair.org to contact Emilia directly.  

 

How do I make a monetary donation to UUCM? Checks  may  be  made  out  to  UUCM.  Please  use  the memo line to indicate to us your intentions (i.e., Annual Pledge, Plate Collection, Sharing Our Riches, MESH). You can  also make  donations  via  electronic  funds  transfer (EFT). Contact Emilia Sadonis for info.   

Can I make other kinds of donations to UUCM? We  do  not  accept  donations  of  clothing,  books  or household items. We suggest donating used clothing to either  the Salvation Army or  the Red Cross. Your  local library might also be happy to accept your old books. If you wish  to donate  items  for our MESH Café Ministry, please email randilynnhawkins@gmail.com.   

How do I submit a reimbursement request?  All  reimbursement  requests must come  from  the head of your committee or group and be received a week  in advance of need. Submit your receipts to your commit‐tee  leader and have them contact the Administrator to electronically fill out the request.  

How do I get an announcement into the order of ser‐vice, Gazette or weekly email blast?  For Sunday announcements, all requests need to be sent to  our  office  by  Wednesday.  We  also  send  out  our weekly email blast on Wednesday. All announcements from  the  previous  Sunday  are  included  in  the  blast. UUCM‐related  events  take  precedence  over  outside events  but  we  do  our  best  to  accommodate  all  re‐quests.  Announcements  must  be  kept  short.  Gazette articles must be no longer than 250 words. Send to our Office Mgr. Jaclyn Puleo (officemgr@uumontclair.org).  How can I provide Sunday flowers for the Chancel? You can provide the Sunday Chancel flowers to honor a memory or a person. The price  is  reasonable and your dedication will be acknowledged in the Order of Service. Contact Lori Alexander at yngralph@gmail.com or (973) 338‐1226 for more info.   

What are child dedications?  Child  dedications  are  our  ritual way  of welcoming  in‐fants and children into the congregation. They are simi‐lar  to  Baptisms  or  Naming  Ceremonies  in  other  faith traditions,  but  as  UU’s,  we  believe  that  children  are born  pure  with  original  blessing,  not  original  sin.  For members, a small child  is dedicated as part of our Sun‐day morning worship  services. We  also  perform  Child Dedications in people’s homes.

Greeters Wanted! Here’s a great way to get to know the friendly faces walking through the door Sunday mornings: be a Greeter! David Hanley, chief over‐seer of the Narthex, has a sign‐up sheet and instructions on perform‐ing this essential role needed Sun‐day mornings. 

Coffee & Connections Hour Coffee and Connections Hour is a great time to meet and catch up with friends and members of the congregation as well as make our visitors feel welcome. Please con‐sider hosting a Coffee Hour by bringing food, setting up snacks for the congregation and cleaning up.  There is a sign‐up sheet at every coffee hour posted in the kitchen on the wall.  You can sign up there or at www.uumontclair.org/worship/coffee‐hour/. If you need any help, including during coffee hour, or would like more information, please contact Connie Thames at temzplace@yahoo.com.

UUCM Talk and Tour Schedule Have you ever been curious to learn a bit more about our beauti‐ful Sanctuary and buildings? Our UUCM Tour will be May 7th. We will also be leading UU 101 for any newcomers interested in getting a brief overview of our UU history, beliefs and values May 21st. Meet us by the fireplace in the Narthex after each service!  

Our CommUUnity Mart Come visit us every Sunday at Cof‐fee Hour! Purchase your weekly gift cards from ShopRite and Kings as well as many other items. Do you need a place to display and sell your art?  We'd love to wel‐come you as an "Artist of the Month" at our UU Marketplace table at our Coffee and Connec‐tion Hour from 10:00 to 11:00 AM each Sunday.  80% of sales go to the artist and 20% is donated to the U. We'd like to welcome our May Artists of the Month, Iris and Lauren DeLaPaz, who share a love for all things crafty and organic, including but not limited to hand‐made soaps and candles to string boards and glassware. Typically they just make things for them‐selves but they are currently trying to save money to go to General Assembly in New Orleans! This year for Mother’s Day, why don’t you support your local religious educator and the UU at the same time? If you would like more in‐formation contact Arlene Dodge at (908)889‐5784 or adodge918@hotmail.com.  

 

What’s Happening This Month

A team of your fellow members has been hard at work to make this year’s annual Pledge Drive a success. Fol‐lowing up on last year, when we increased our giving an amazing 13%, many are joining our team to do even better this year. We are doing even more one on one canvassing, the most effective way to build our commu‐nity’s strength while inspiring generous giving. Please respond to our calls, take a look at your annual budget, and if you are able, consider a pledge of 3% of your income. UUCM is doing many great things to shore up our foundation for a new minister and your financial contribution is one of the best ways to both express your commitment and respond to the many spiritual and social challenges we see before us. Thanks to this great community, we’re confident we’ll have another successful drive. Thank YOU for doing your part to make our Congregation the vital, important place that it is! 100% Committed, Now More Than Ever!

Hilltop Reservation (www.essexcountyparks.org/parks/hilltop‐reservation) The Hilltop Reservation is a nature preserve located on the Second Watchung Mountain in the host com‐munities of Cedar Grove, North Caldwell and Verona. 

Essex County Environmental Center (www.essexcountyparks.org/facilities/environmental‐center) The Essex County Environmental Center is an environmental education center with a mission to create awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the environment and its relationship to Essex County resi‐dents. 

Richard W. Dekorte Park and Meadowlands Environmental Center (www.njsea.com/njmc) Estuary park with walking paths plus an environmental center and observatory access on select days. 

Duke Farms (www.dukefarms.org) At Duke Farms, you’ll find 700 acres of land devoted to an ongoing exploration ‐‐ of native species, preser‐vation and sustainability efforts, and of the area’s natural beauty. 

New Jersey Botanical Gardens (www.njbg.org) The NJBG includes 96 acres of specialty gardens surrounded by a 1000 acres of woodlands. 

Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve (www.bhwp.org) Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve is a nature preserve, botanical garden, and accredited museum located at 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pennsylvania. 

    

Sunday Remembrances

A candle in celebration of the 20th wedding anniversary of member Patrick Preblick and her husband Ray Preblick who were married March 22, 1997.   A candle of hope, strength and healing to Patrick Preblick’s friend and co‐worker, Dominic Gillette and his three young sons on the loss of Dom’s wife Sarah, who passed away soon after the birth of their third child. May Sarah’s bright spirit live on in her children and be a blessing to Dominic and their family and friends as they move through this time of grief and transition.  Anneliese Scherfen lit a candle of peace for Matt and his family as they help his father find comfort in his final days.   A candle of comfort for Audrey Arian, mother of Peter Arian and grandmother of Maggie and Emma. Audrey has been battling cancer for some five years. She will soon be transferred to the palliative care unit at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. Our hearts go out to the Arian family.   Lou Dodge lit a candle for fellow Men's Group member Ed Harris who was in a hospital in Ramsey. Ed has been battling an illness for a while.  A candle for custodian Keith Mitchell’s brother who passed away on March 29th.   Steven Mintz’s uncle John Jakobson who died on April 7th and combined brilliance, generosity, vigorous appe‐tite for life. He will be missed.   Judith Rew on the birth of her grandson, Owen Georg Simon, on April 11th to daughter Emma Rew Simon and her husband Christian Simon.   Ginny Crooks lit a candle for her sister Kathy who had a mini stroke on April 14th. She is able to speak now but there is danger of a stroke in the three weeks following.   For Erica Gramp, who father Richard died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family, on Easter Sunday morning. Rev. Carlos Martinez is the candidate for settled minister at Westside UU Congregation in Seattle, WA. The congregation will vote on April 30th to call him as their minister. We send blessings to Rev. Carlos.   For Mariette Raynor’s 48 year old niece, Michelle, who died very suddenly on April 19th while traveling home to New Jersey on a plane from Denver.  . 

We have introduced a new way of sharing remembrances during Sunday services.  Instead of saying your remembrance up on the Chancel, you will find a small table with candles and remembrances book in the Sanctuary on Sundays.  Please write any joy or sorrow you have in the book, light a candle, and indicate whether you want your remembrance shared or kept private. Written remembrances will capture important news and equip your community to respond effectively to your joys and sorrows.   

As I See It A Monthly Take on Race in America from the Undoing Racism Committee

The Undoing Racism Committee (URC) has marched in the African American Heritage Parade in Montclair for many years.  We invite all UUCM members and friends to join us for the Parade on Saturday, June 3rd.  You can walk or ride as part of our UU contingent.  The Parade kicks off from Glenfield Park at 10:00 AM and ends at Nishuane Park with a festival. You can walk for all or part of the Parade, depending on your time or stamina.  We get lots of appre‐ciative cheers and recognition for our work in the community.  

URC held its third Conversations on Racism on April 23 which generated much interest in the fusion coalition build‐ing work begun by Rev. Dr. William Barber.  This work involves interfaith and community groups working together from a moral perspective to affect change.  Dr. Barber will return to NJ at a future point to train groups how to form coalitions.  We will discuss our moral positions and how URC will continue its mission at our May 21st meeting following UUCM’s annual meeting.  We will also hold our annual retreat on Saturday, June 10th at UUCM from 10:00 AM to2:00 PM to plan our focus for next year. Join us as we continue our mission to promote equal justice, opportunity, and dignity for all people.  We undo racism by changing hearts and minds.

LGBTQ Family Game Afternoon  

The Rainbow UU will be hosting an afternoon of fun games and snacks on Sunday, May 21st, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in the Peierls Room.  This 

event is for families who have LGBTQ kids, LGBTQ parents with kids, and straight allies as well.  Bring your favorite game and come have some fun and make new friends!  Please RSVP to maria.towe@gmail.com. 

Mortenson Scholarship Fund Each year, the Mortenson Scholarship Fund awards small education grants to UUCM members or chil‐dren of members. This fund was established by Dorothy Mortenson, in memory of her husband who was a teacher and is open to persons of all ages who are active members of UUCM. To apply or for more information, contact Nicole Rinklin at (973) 509‐1291 or nrinklin@gmail.com. Applica‐tions must be received by Wednesday, May 10th. The Mortenson Scholarship Awards will be pre‐sented at our Annual Meeting on May 21st.

Join our ministers and other members of our congregation for this year’s General Assembly (GA) which be held June 21st thru 25th in New Orleans, LA. General Assembly (GA) is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). General Assembly 2017 will assemble leaders and communities of many faiths to worship together, learn from one another, and create a new vision of faith that no longer divides us, but connects us to an interdependent future that works for all. Attendees worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. Anyone may attend; congregations must certify annually to send voting delegates. For more information, visit: www.uua.org/ga/.
