Nearly 15 years ago, there was a girl who lived in Indiana where I served as youth minister. Nearly 15 years later, that girl is all grown up, gone to college, and has been in several countries doing mission work. She recently wrote a blog post and said, “There are a thousand people waiting on the other side of your obedience.”
As I reflected on that, I believe the Holy Spirit directed my thoughts to the parable of the talents in Matthew 25. Three servants were given three different amounts of money to invest and work with, and the Master left on a long journey. When he came back, the servant who was given five had earned five more. The servant who was given two had earned two more. But the servant who had been given one went and buried the money in the ground for fear of losing it.. The Master was furious with that servant, calling him wicked and lazy. He threw that worthless servant outside into the darkness where there is “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (a phrase used when talking about Hell).
It’s tempting to think the Master a greedy man. He chastised the one-talent servant for not putting the money in the bank so he could earn interest. Does the guy care about nothing but a return on his investment? Is he willing to throw the servant in Hell for lack of a money market strategy? If the Master in the parable is to represent God, I really think there’s more to it than that.
I wonder if the Master knew there were a thousand people on the other side of that servant’s obedience.
The servants who earned more on their investment pleased the Master not because they were good capitalists, but they used their money in ways that were consistent with His character and in line with His mission. They accomplished what was important to the Master with the money the Master gave them. These Kingdom priorities are identified in other parables Jesus told. Seek the lost. Love your neighbor. Forgive those who hurt you. Feed the hungry. Cloth the naked. Visit the lonely.
It becomes more obvious to me why the Master was so upset with the servant who did nothing with what he was given. No one was loved, found, or forgiven. No one was fed or clothed. No one was blessed with the resources of the Master. And that fearful and lazy servant never gave a thought to those who could be forever transformed if he just stepped out and used what the Master gave him in ways consistent with the Master’s character and in line with His mission.
The question for all of us in 2016 is, “Who is waiting on the other side of your obedience?” You’ll never see their face until you actually step out and do what God is leading you to do.

Faith Comes by Hearing-Military BibleSticks
The Military BibleStick reaches these service men and women, deployed in some of the most dangerous areas of the world, with God’s Word in audio. It can go with them and sustain them in even the most difficult circumstances. It contains the entire Audio Drama New Testament and selected Psalms chosen specifically for “warriors,” yet it’s only about the size of a pack of chewing gum.
Designed to military specifications for safe and discreet use in low-light conditions, it features a matte black finish and red-light-only operation — and runs on a single AAA battery!
Each service member who receives a Military BibleStick also has the option to request a free Audio New Testament or Kids Bible for family back home — although they may be separated from loved ones, they know they are listening through the Word together.
Military BibleSticks provide real hope for our heroes!
