After many hours of contemplation and thought, I am torn between "love and hate". Because of the bylaws, I must step down from leadership of EERTA. These past many years of service, particularly as your president the past 4 years, I will always remember. I truly love this organization and all of you wonderful, kind and talented people and I will definitely continue to participate in the future as time and other obligations permit. You are in very capable hands when you elect Dominic, Agnes, Susan and John at the Annual September Luncheon. Dominic, Susan and John will be beginning their second terms in their office as dictated by the new bylaws changes. Agnes, as always in the past, has led you in many capacities and I thank her for all that she does. There is no comparison to the work that John has given us as your treasurer and will continue to do so. Sadly, I will miss the Jessup's who have led us in membership over many years and wish them well in their challenges. Best wishes to Bob for his leadership as a town director, resolutions chair and community services chair. We are still looking for someone to take over for Carol as historian. Dominic will announce his BOD in the next newsletter. I would also single out Mary Ella, Eileen and Larry for their ever consistent dedication and leadership over their many years of service. Joel has published a tremendous newsletter and Dee and Alicia have served us very well as the Hospitality Twins and Friendly Service chairs. Best wishes for continued success of the BOD in the next year. To our membership, please contribute to our successful organization by volunteering as your time and health permits. All are welcomed to attend the August 22nd BOD meeting at the Riverhead Public Library starting at 10:00am. Many of us adjourn to Applebee's for lunch afterwards. The Annual "Back to School Luncheon" (now our election luncheon) will be held, thanks to Bob, at Jerry & the Mermaids in Riverhead on Wednesday, September 5th at 11:30am. In closing, as 2018-19 President of LIZ, I urge any member of LIZ to sign up as a delegate to the 2018 NYSRTA Convention and Annual Meeting being held at Turning Stone October 17-19. All delegates will be provided with a $400 stipend and a coach bus to attend. Further details will be forthcoming in the summer edition of York State. EERTA members Dominic, Bob, Eileen, Mary Ella, Dee, Alicia, Jo Anne and Leigh Powell and Lois serve with me on the LIZ BOD. As we continue to work for EERTA, LIZ, and NYSRTA, I wish all a peaceful and healthy conclusion of this summer and look forward to a successful and happy next year. On June 5, 2018, the Long Island Zone presented a $1000 New York State Retired Teachers Association Hudson-Kramer grant to Malynda Nichol and Shawn Keane, science teachers at Dawnwood Middle School, Centereach. They are creating an agricultural unit and curriculum "From Seed to Table" that will benefit students by enhancing the STEAM and science research initiatives in the Middle Country School District. The grant money will be used to construct a heated greenhouse.

As a Community Service project the Long Island Zone has been holding raffles and 50/50’s at luncheons to raise money for "Helping Makes U Happy", a community service organization based in Center Moriches and founded by Keith Caputo. Keith will be our guest speaker at the LIZ Annual luncheon on September 26, 2018 at the Bellport Country Club. I encourage everyone to join us as we honor Keith and hear him speak on his commitment to helping others and the fantastic success of "Helping Makes U Happy"

 Reporting EERTA Luncheon

EERTA retirees and their guests enjoyed two lovely luncheons this Spring. On April 25, 2018 Eileen Holmes organized a "Celebrate Spring!" luncheon/meeting at Phil's Restaurant in Aquebogue (formerly Meeting House Creek Inn). It was good to get together after a winter that seemed to never end! The EERTA slate of officers for the 2018-19 year was announced: Dominick LiCausi, President, Agnes Dansereau, Vice-President, Susan LiCausi, Secretary and John Ruggiero, Treasurer. This slate was voted on and elected at the second luncheon: the annual EERTA Flag Day Meeting/Luncheon on June 13, 2018 at Pace's Waterfront Restaurant in Mattituck. EERTA Vice-President Agnes Dansereau arranged this luncheon and guest speaker Dr. Marilyn LoPresti, Ph.D. demonstrated Tai Chi movements, discussed the health benefits of this low impact martial arts exercise and had the audience stand up and practice Tai Chi movements with her. Dr. LoPresti is a retired school superintendent with more than 36 years in education. A 30+ year cancer survivor, in retirement she has become a certified career advisor, motivational speaker, and a Tai Chi, Qigong instructor. She has a Second Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo, has studied Kung Fu and self-defense techniques and is a WALK 15 exercise instructor. EERTA's next luncheon has been arranged by Robert Svoboda and will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2018 at Jerry and the Mermaid Restaurant in Riverhead. Special entertainment at this Back-to-School luncheon/meeting will be the barbershop quartet "Antiquity". Come and enjoy good food, good music and friendship! The registration form is in this newsletter.Eileen Holmes

    FALL PREVENTION IN YOUR HOME

Nearly a third of the U.S. Seniors fall each year. About half of all falls requiring hospitalization take place at home. Whether it's slippery floors, rickety stairs, or electric cords, some of the most common causes of falls are in the home where you might have a false sense of security. Below are some suggestions to help prevent falls in your home. 1. Remove all clutter. Piles of books etc. 2. Repair or remove tripping hazards. Throw rugs etc. 3. Install grab bars and hand rails. 4. Wear clothing you do not trip over. 5. Light it right. Install brighter light bulbs, add night lights. 6. Wear shoes. Socks are a slipping risk. 7. Make it nonslip. Nonslip mats are recommended for bathtubs and showers. The above are suggestions to help make you home more fall proof without the expense of total remodeling. Mary Ella Moeller
