Dear Educational Advancement Foundations

Members and Supporters,

As a Foundation committed to promote lifelong learning, we have much

to celebrate as we close our 4th year of Launching New Dimensions

of Educational Excellence®! I am personally very proud of the strong

support of our dedicated members, community advocates and

sponsors in advancing the mission of the Educational Advancement

Foundation®. I am delighted to report that 2017 concluded a year of

continued growth as EAF® achieved targeted goals established over

the past 4 years.

Each year we have challenged ourselves to 1) Grow the assets of the

Foundation, 2) Increase the number of Corporate and Private Donors

to the Foundation, 3) Grow the Capitalized Endowment portfolio

and 4) Increase the number and amount of Scholarships Awarded.

Thanks to each of you – the Educational Advancement Foundation has

experienced a 47% increase in net assets and a 55% growth in revenues.

During this time we have been able to strengthen our platform and widen our impact. Over $600,000 in

scholarship and community assistance grants were awarded during 2017 to 320 students and 7 community

organizations. This brings our historical total to over $5 million awarded since our founding in 1980.

EAF’s impact is also measured by the number of fully capitalized endowments managed by the Foundation.

The endowment program encourages and supports leaving a lasting legacy with which to award scholarships

in perpetuity. These legacy endowments are the roots which will fuel the EAF mission well into the future. Our

total number of managed endowments were 342 with the number of endowments which consistently provide

financial assistance to college students reaching 222, which was a 9% increase over the 203 in 2016. Over the

past four years, the number of capitalized endowments increased from 160 to 222.

Our foundation also saw a significant increase in membership engagement. We ended 2017 with a membership

base of over 72,500 members which was an 8.3% increase over 2016. Chapters within Alpha Kappa Alpha

Sorority, Inc.® continued to strongly support EAF contributing over $367,000 during 2017, compared to

$300,000 the prior year.

We have been driven to diligent stewardship of Foundation resources, enhancing member and donor

engagement through new endowment initiatives, and sustaining impactful philanthropy to those pursuing

higher educational goals.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Educational Advancement Foundation®, we offer our

deepest gratitude for your continued outstanding support as we continue Launching New Dimensions of

Educational Excellence.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.

The EAF® offers members, organizations and corporations an excellent opportunity to leave a lasting legacy through our Endowment Program. Endowments are contributions of $20,000 or more placed into a restricted fund, administered by EAF, and used solely for scholarship awards. Only the interest and dividends are used for awards — the principal is never touched — to provide a continuous source of scholarship funds over the years.

Endowment funds may be established to honor the memory a loved one or friend … to support a personal commitment … to support a specific profession … and other criteria the donor chooses. Through the specific guidelines established for awarding scholarship funds, donors can reaffirm their own personal commitments to lifelong learning.

The Educational Advancement Foundation supports students at Historically Black College & Universities and maintains the “Educational Enrichment Think HBCU” Endowment Fund. The Foundation firmly believes that HBCUs positively contribute to the long-term success of thousands of minority students who otherwise may not be afforded the same opportunities as many others. EAF is proud to help these students overcome financial obstacles and reach their full potential.

I am pleased to present the Treasurer’s Report for the Alpha Kappa

Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. for the year ended

December 31, 2017.

We received an unqualified (clean) opinion from the Certified

Public Accountant firm of Knutte & Associates, P.C. for the financial

statements as of December 31, 2017.

In the fiscal year ended December 31, 2017, total assets of the

Educational Advancement Foundation totaled $13.4 million, which

was an 17.9% increase over the $11.4 million reported at tahe end

of 2016. Liabilities totaled $86,705 and consisted mainly of $20,971

of accounts payables, $30,631 of scholarships payable, $14,080 of

accrued payroll, and $8,048 of capital lease obligations. The fund balance (net assets) totaled $13.3

million at the end of 2017; an increase from $11.3 million in 2016. We ended 2017 with Total Revenues

of $3.57 million a 15% increase over 2016. Total Expenses were $1.5 million. Investment income and

Membership Fees each experienced growth rates of 15% and 8.3%, respectively.

Investment Performance

Investments are the largest asset totaling $12 million, which make up 89% of Total Net Assets.

Investment returns for the Foundation increased 37% in 2017 as compared to the 25% increase realized

in 2016. EAF’s investment portfolio continues to meet its performance targets and provide a positive

yield to each eligible endowment account based on positive net earnings less a slight inflation factor.

Careful financial stewardship, portfolio diversification and strong financial results contribute positively

to the process by which the Foundation’s mission to support lifelong learning is achieved.

Endowments

Total endowments managed by EAF grew 3% from 332 in 2016 to 342 at the end of 2017. The

permanently restricted, capitalized portfolio increased 9.4% to 222. This solid endowment base

provides the foundation by which we can award scholarships and community assistance grants

in perpetuity. Increases in annual giving across all of EAF’s programs enable us to support the

educational goals of students around the world.

Thank you for your enduring support of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation

as we continue to make strides and “Launch New Dimensions of Educational Excellence”!

Establishing a FellowshipSupport students in a particular field of study by establishing a fellowship. Fellowships are awarded during even-numbered years, and the amount of the award is determined by the fellowship administrator or designated group. Fellowship funds are not invested and therefore do not earn any annual interest. Fellowships grow via ongoing donor contributions and there are no limitations on the amount of the fellowship awards. While cash donations are the most common form of giving; planned gifts such as insurance policies, memorial gifts, charitable trusts, stocks and bonds are other methods. One of the most gratifying ways for donors to support lifelong learning is by giving to or establishing an endowment fund or fellowship within the Foundation.
