“Nothing is equal to prayer; for whatever is impossible it makes possible, what is difficult…. For it is impossible, utterly impossible, for the man who prays eagerly and invokes God ceaselessly ever to sin” St. John Chrysostom, CCC 2744. “Those who pray are certainly saved; those who do not pray are certainly damned” St. Alphonsus Liguori, CCC2744.

Those of you who are retired but not tired, I encourage you to make time for noon Mass at least once a week. Use your time very well. Consider the many hours spent before television each day and the benefits of those programs you watch. Compare such benefits with the benefits of 30 minutes at Mass each day or at least once a week. Which ones are eternal? Which ones do you prefer? Use your time wisely as wise men and women. Make your souls gardens of virtues and cultivate it with prayer and love of God and neighbor.

Make going to confession on a regular basis a priority and a habit. When the Lord Jesus talks about being ready, prepared and on alert, He wants us to be saved. Preparation for eternal life with Him in Heaven is a lifetime business. A business man or woman pays great attention to his or her business in anticipation of great success. We need to do the same with eternal life in Heaven. Do not allow any one to deceive you or discourage you from going to confession simply because they do not believe in the sacraments that the Lord has given His church for us to obtain His graces. You take decision on your life and not someone else. You have dynamic priests who care so much about your wellbeing both spiritual and physically. Come to them and they will guide you on the right path to eternal life.

Thank you so much for your generous hearts. I would have loved to write to you individually, but because of the size of the parish, it may take me a whole year to do it. But I want you to know that each of you is loved and you remain dear to me. You will always be close to my heart and remembered in my daily prayers and Masses. I wish to remind you that “out of sight is not out of mind.” Even when I am not around or in your midst as usual, I will be with you in spirit.

All Saints Parish, Alpena has become my third home in the diocese of Gaylord. It is the third parish where I tried to serve the good people of God in this diocese. I served at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Cathedral, Gaylord, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Traverse City, and All Saints Catholic Parish, Alpena. I am a blessed and lucky priest to have served in these giant parishes in the diocese. What an honor and privilege to have served you.

Finally, may you always remain blessed in the Lord. May our Blessed Mother, the seat of Wisdom and the Help of all Christians always intercede for you and be with you.

Once again, thank you for everything.

Laudetur Jesus Christus

Fr. Polycarp

From Fr. Polycarp THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!

My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, I sincerely give thanks to God the almighty Father for each of you. I am grateful to Him that He blessed this precious parish with the gift of each of you. To Him be honor and glory.

May I humbly use this medium to appreciate each of you for your goodness. Each of you has touched my life for the past two years directly or indirectly. I have enjoyed your companionship, your jokes and smiles and shared in your grief. You have taught me so much and I will keep these memories with me for the rest of my life.

Yes, I was sent to the Catholic diocese of Gaylord for pastoral work and studies by Bishop Oliver in 2011. I was due to go back to Nigeria in 2014, but because of the devastating activities of Boko Haram, I could not go back. Bishop Raica requested from my bishop to keep us here until the dust settled. I wish to say that most of the pastoral areas in the diocese of Maiduguri are now safe to some degree. So do not worry much about my safety. All I request from you is to continue to keep the good people of Nigeria in your prayers. Also, pray for the conversion of all terrorists around the World.

All Saints Parish is blessed to have people from different cultural backgrounds and traditions. These have added great beauty and valor to the parish. The cultural differences and traditions should be the basis for strong love and unity among you. May you please use these platforms to teach one another how to live, see, judge and act like Jesus our savior. I want you to always realize that besides being in the church, you are all Americans. It means that all of you are equal under the law of the land. May you bring with you into the church this sense of equality so that you can see each other as brothers and sisters in the Lord. Remember, “United we stand to love and progress in life in everything, and divided we fall, disintegrate and extinguish.”

Let us always try to go out of our way to be brothers or sisters to everyone we meet every day whether at home, the grocery store and our work places. Let people see Jesus in us and let us try and see Him in them. This disposition will help us transform the world and make it a better place once again for us and generations yet unborn.

Let us strive daily to have a conscience nurtured by Truth. Let us “live Truth and live Catholic.” Let us work hard to remain in the word of God and we would know the truth and the truth will set us free (Jn. 8:32).

Let us always be prayerful. “Prayer and Christian life are inseparable, for they concern the same love and the same renunciation, proceeding from love; the same filial and loving conformity with Father’s plan of love; the same transforming union in the Holy Spirit who conforms us more and more to Christ Jesus; the same love for all men, the love with which Jesus has loved us.” “Whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give to you. This I command you, to love one another” (Jn 15:16-17).

Mass with Anointing of the Sick

Thurs., October 19 11:00 AM—St. Anne Church For those who are in need of healing and those who are vulnerable to illness with the coming cold winter months (e.g. the elderly and/or immune deficient). Several priests will be present to hear confessions before Mass, concelebrate the Mass and assist with anointing. After Mass, there will be a free, light luncheon in the parish hall. If you know of someone who is in need of physical or spiritual healing, let them know of this opportunity, and maybe even offer to bring and/or accompany them. What a wonderful way to gather and pray together for each other.

Service of Remembrance Each year the church around the world commemorates All Souls’ Day on November 2nd, remembering all those who have “gone home to God”. On Thursday, November 2, 2017, All Saints Parish will celebrate a Service of Remembrance at 7:00pm at St. Anne Church to remember all those from our parish who have entered eternal life since November 1st of 2016. Please join us as we remember the recently deceased from our parish. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Letters have been mailed to the contacts of those whom have passed, Nov. 2016 to the present, from our parish. (Please be aware that we only send out one letter to the contact person that the funeral home

gives us. So we ask the contact person to share the information about this service with the family and friends of their loved one.) Also, if you feel we may have inadvertently missed your loved one, call our office (354-3019).

As part of this celebration, a candle will be lit in memory of everyone being remembered this night.

All Souls’ Day is not a holy day of obligation, however, if you wish to include the celebration of Mass on that day, there will be Mass at Noon at St. Anne Church.

Ecumenical Prayer Service

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 7 P.M.

St. Paul Lutheran Church

727 S. Second St., Alpena This prayer service commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation which is October 31, 2017. Both Bishop Steven Raica of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord and Bishop Craig Satterlee of the North/West Lower Michigan Synod of the ELCA will be leading worship together with other clergy from the community assisting.

As we gather to hear God’s Word, pray, sing, and give thanks to God in celebration for the unity we share in Christ Jesus, this time of worship will be especially meaningful because we’ll be together in one place—members of the various LARCC congregations, the area Catholic parishes, and other congregations from Alpena, Alcona, Presque Isle and surrounding counties—but one in mind and spirit. Please put this important date on your calendar and plan to join this wonderful opportunity for ecumenical worship and fellowship.

Seeking Donations for “Little Blue Books” for Advent Many of you may know of the “Little Blue Prayer Books” that are made available during Advent. These books are well liked. We seek your donations to help make it possible. If you’d like to make a donation, we would greatly appreciate it. Each book, with S & H included, costs $1.10 —so any donations will help offset this cost for a valuable prayer resource during Advent.
