Stephen & Margaret Pejka From Wanda Pejka

Today is the last Sunday of the Church’s Year, the Solemnity of Christ the King. This solemnity was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, celebrating an aspect of Jesus’ identity rather than his life. Conventional understanding of kingship and power are transformed. Rather than calling up images of Jesus Christ dressed in kingly robes, the Gospel proclaims him as king by the sign over his head on the throne of a wooden cross: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Paradoxically, it is the thief who recognized in Christ the Lord and Savior.

And talking of the thief hanging next to Jesus on a Cross, our Christmas Book from ‘Dynamic Catholic’ is ‘Rediscover the Saints’ by Matthew Kelly, and the prologue focuses on the very first saint, the thief who recognizes Jesus as Lord and Savior and asks to be remembered when he comes into his kingdom. Jesus replies: “Today you will be with me in Paradise (Heaven).” Tradition has named the ‘good thief’ Dismas. Matthew Kelly writes his story in a fictitious way. Here is a taster: “The Romans crucified thieves and now it was my turn. They took me and another thief, Gestas, to a small hill outside the city to crucify us. I had heard of this place and had always avoided it, but there was no avoiding it now. I would die as I had lived, anxious and afraid. That thought was interrupted by a commotion. It was another criminal and a rowdy crowd. But when I looked closely at him I realized it was that son of David person. ‘What did he do?’ I thought to myself. The soldiers nailed each of us to a wooden cross. The pain was excruciating. ‘Why are men so cruel to each other?’ I thought. Then the other thief, Gestas, cried out, ‘Jesus, look at me.’ I had heard that name. He had been doing miracles and people had been saying he was the Messiah. Was this really him? What had he done to deserve this? As a criminal you get to know other criminals and it was clear to me that this man Jesus was no criminal. The other thief kept taunting Jesus, mocking him, ridiculing him, and some of the crowd joined in. ‘I thought you were the Christ,’ Gestas said. ‘If you are the Christ, prove it. Save yourself and while you’re at it, save us!’ ‘Shut up, Gestas!’ I found myself saying. ‘What has he done wrong? We are getting what we deserve, but he has not done anything to deserve this.’ At that moment I felt Jesus looking at me. I was suffocating, but I raised my eyes to meet his, and he looked at me like nobody had ever looked at me before. It was the first time in my life that I felt like anyone really saw me. And he had this look in his eyes that said, ‘Everything is going to be all right.’ It was a moment like no other in my life; he was a man like no other man I had ever known or even heard about, and I said to him, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ And then he said, ‘I promise you, today you will be with me in paradise.’ They say every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. If I could lean in close to you and whisper something in your ear, it would be this: ‘If there are pieces of your past that are weighing you down, it’s time to leave them behind. You are not what has happened to you. You are someone unimaginably greater than you have ever considered.’”

What is Dynamic Parish? Dynamic Catholic has been inspiring Catholics to rediscover the genius of Catholicism through the development of world-class resources and life-changing events for a decade. They will spend the next decade helping parish communities like ours grow and thrive through an initiative called Dynamic Parish. They invited us to pilot this program in our parish for five years at no cost to us. There are over 15,000 parishes in America. Ours is one of just 61 that was selected. During the five years, Dynamic Catholic will invest more than a million dollars in our community through engaging and energizing events, programs, and resources. Parish consultants will walk alongside our pastor and parish leaders, share best practices and support us at every turn. If you missed the information shared at Mass, please visit the parish website to view the video message from Dynamic Catholic’s Matthew Kelly and a link to a booklet which describes the program.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US!

We are a parish family, in love with Christ, courageous-ly living the Gospel.

Thank you to all parishioners who have completed and submitted your Commitment Card to the church. As a reminder, all commitments need to be submitted to the church no later than Sunday, December 8 in order to be

accounted for in the final Summary Report. Please complete and submit your card to the church even if you are unable to make a change to your current level of giving. For those registered parishioners not currently supporting the church with regular offertory gifts, please consider a monthly gift to support the needs of our parish.

Thank you for making this vision a reality through your generosity!

Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 9:00AM

The Story of Our Lady of Guadalupe: At dawn on December 9, 1531, on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City, Our Blessed Lady appeared to Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian. While on his way to attend Mass, he heard sounds of chirping birds and beautiful music and wondered where it came from and its meaning. Then he heard a voice calling him. There she revealed herself to him as "the Ever Virgin Mother of the True God," and made known her desire that a Shrine be built there to bear witness to her love, her compassion, and her protection. She sent him to Bishop Juan de Zumarraga in Mexico City to request her great desire.

The Bishop dismissed the humble Indian without paying attention to his story. Two more times Our Lady appeared to Juan, requesting him to deliver the same favor. He did as she asked and finally the Bishop asked for a sign. Juan reported this to her and she promised to grant a sign the following morning. On December 12, while on his way to bring a priest to his dying uncle, Our Lady appeared to him for the fourth time. She assured him of his uncle's recovery and told him to gather fresh roses which he would find growing on the frosty summit of the rocky and barren hill. This done, she arranged the castilian roses in his tilma (cloak) and hurried him to the Bishop, giving him an account of their origin. This is what is known as "The Miracle of the pink roses." To the Bishop's amazement, when Juan opened up his tilma before him there was painted upon it a miraculous beautiful image of Our Lady, exactly as she had appeared on Mount Tepeyac. The Bishop prostrated himself in veneration and soon after began the building of the Shrine on the top of Mount Tepeyac. The Basilica in Mexico City is the most important Shrine to Our Blessed mother in all the American continents, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Juan Diego's cloak, marvelously preserved, can still be seen behind the main altar in the new Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is near the original Basilica site she requested. Millions from all over Mexico and the world make their way to venerate Our Blessed Mother and to implore her intercession. She stated to Juan, "Am I not here as your Mother?"

WE ARE CHANGING LIVES THROUGH CHRIST

Tap Into Advent MONDAY, DECEMBER 2

AT 7PM DUNEDIN HOUSE OF BEER

Men of the parish are invited to gather together on the first Monday of the month for some informal spirituality! We will continue building fellowship we began during Lent.

Christmas Giving Tree Under Our Giving Tree we see the gifts that express the love and generosity of our parish. It has been our custom for over 30 years to remember the children of the migrant farm workers who harvest our fruits

and vegetables. Many of these families live in very depressing and difficult conditions, and cannot afford to buy a gift for their children. If you wish to participate in this project, please take a tag(s) and acquire a NEW gift appropriate for that child, GREEN tag for girl, RED tag for boy, wrap it and attach the tag to the gift and leave it under the tree. We look forward to December 17th with great expectation. We have been told many times in the past that without the generosity of our parishioners, numerous farm worker children would receive no gift at all on Christmas. Thank you very much, and may our Lord continue to bless you abundantly.

Blessing of Advent Wreaths NOVEMBER 30-DECEMBER 1

There will be a special blessing of Advent wreaths at all Masses next weekend. You can find information regarding the making of the wreaths, the wreath blessing, and the prayers at the entrances of the church. Visit the Gift Shop for a beautiful selection wreaths and candles.
