Il FIORE Langhe Bianco DOC 2015 LA REGINA Langhe Nascetta DOC 2015 RE DI FIORI Langhe Riesling DOC 2015 ASSO DI FIORI Langhe Chardonnay DOC 2014 OUR LANGHE WHITES The vineyards of Tenuta Serra dei Fiori breathe the Langhe air from way up high, 450 metres above sea level. We are in Trezzo Tinella, a few kilometres from Barolo and Alba, in that harsher part of the Langa narrated by so many writers, from Beppe Fenoglio to Cesare Pavese, where the hills rise steeply towards the sky. This is where our white wines are born: wines that reflect the temperament and tenacity of the men and women of these territories, declared by UNESCO as World Heritage. Nascetta, in dialect, is pronounced by splitting the syllables: “Nas-chetta”. It is an antique grape variety native to the Langhe and the province of Cuneo. It has only recently been rediscovered and just a small number of bottles are produced. This delicate white wine is an excellent aperitif. Aromatic, with a savoury touch, it pairs nicely with sushi and Mediterranean-style raw fish. This is the meeting of an international grape variety, Chardonnay (70%), with one which is autochthonous and has a strong personality, Nascetta (30%). The main characteristic of the 2015 vintage is represented by fresh and floral notes accompanied by the more mature fruity components of the bouquet. It pairs well with molluscs and shellfish, as well as white meats. The grape variety comes from cold climes, originating in the Rhone and Moselle valleys. But the strength and elegance of Rhenish Riesling are beautifully expressed in the Langhe, which was once covered by the sea. All the aroma of yellow flowers and fruit is brought out in this area. We recommend it with risotto, vegetables and vegan food. The grapes are harvested late, almost at the same time as the Nebbiolo for Barolo.The wine then spends a winter cradled in oak barriques which bring out all its complexity and aromatic richness. It is a wine capable of ageing well and for a long time. Worth trying with a range of fresh and mature cheeses. Grappa Invecchiata 2012 As winemakers, we like to num- ber our Grappa too, silk-screening the vintage onto every bottle. This is quite unusual in the world of distillates. Grappa invecchiata di Bricco dell’Uccellone maintains its characteristic note of tobacco leaf. Our Langhe whitesThe vineyards of Tenuta Serra dei Fiori breathe the Langhe air from way up high, 450 metres above sea level. Let me tell you about the new vintageWe’re expecting great things from 2015. Especially if we have the patience to

wait. The character of wine is expressed over the years, just like that of men and women. We see this as being a vintage for ageing, a vintage of great wines.

The Barbera vintage. The year began with a cool, wet spring, which offset the high temperatures and lack of water in the summer. We reached harvest time with

healthy, concentrated and rich grapes. Ripened to perfection. It was a year of few worries in the vineyard and no vine disease of any kind. The only moment of panic came a few hours before the harvest, when we had two

storms, but, luckily, no damage was done. I don’t want to compare 2015 to other years: every harvest has its own story to

tell. Even the vineyard grows and responds differently to the climatic conditions.From the original ten hectares bought by our father Giacomo, the Braida estate has now grown to 60. We bought another five hectares in 2015. We continue

Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2013 Bricco dell’uccellone has just celebrated its thirtieth birthday. The evocative name has its own particular story: in the house next to the vineyard, there once lived an old lady who was always dressed in black and who was nicknamed “l’uselun”, the big bird.2013 was a late harvest, with a slow start to budding. The grapes ripened slowly too. We harvested in october, like we used to do, picking the bunches in the first autumn mists. Bricco 2013 has a clearly perceptible freshness and finesse.The 2014 vintage will be available this autumn and is a vintage which has revealed unexpected potential. The work carried out in the vineyard, the investments made, and our courageous decisions, have rewarded us with a great Barbera. It spends 12 months ageing in barriques and a further 12 months in the bottle.

Barbera d’Asti Frizzante DOC 2015 This is our most cheerful wine. A sparkling Barbera which has been with us for 55 years, since 1961. The first grapes came from the vineyard that belonged to our grandmother, Caterina, the “cusinera”, the cook who had an inn in the village. Grandma Caterina’s personality is reflected to some extent in this wine: a little bit “reassuring mother” and a little bit “carefree young girl singing a cheerful song”. This year, the grapes were absolutely amazing. You can drink it with everything. We also recommend trying it as an aperitif. delicious in summer, served nicely chilled.

Grignolino d’Asti DOC 2015 our friend gino Veronelli had rechristened grignolino “anarchico testabalorda”, which we could roughly translate as “anarchic crackpot” because of its rebellious, wild and free spirit. We Bolognas are a bit like this too, which is why I love grignolino. So much so, that I decided to take a chance on this autochthonous Monferrato grape variety, playing with its fruit, and making plans. our Limonte comes from a young vineyard, on a hill above Rocchetta Tanaro: the soil there is rich in silt, which is called “limo” in Italian, hence the name Limonte. A hill-grown wine which breathes the “marin”, the sea wind which blows up from Liguria to caress our hills. Limonte has evident tannins which indicate great prospects for ageing. It can be drunk immediately, also chilled. or you can wait. It’s excellent with fish: we recommend trying it with fried anchovies or cod.

Moscato d’Asti DOCG 2015My father giacomo and my sister Raffaella bought the land that was to become Vigna senza nome in 1990, in Mango, on a magical hill in the locality of Campé. This was no random choice: Mango was the village of Renato Ratti, the Barolo producer responsible for making Moscato d’Asti so great. giacomo Bersanetti designed the label, inspired by the magical Sator Square and highlighting the g. An ironic and intellectual game. We like to drink it at the end of a meal, pairing it with dessert or with a cheeseboard.

Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2013 The grapes grow in a vineyard which is over 50 years old. The sandy soil offers us an excellent advantage: even in rainier years, the microclimate in the vineyard is warmer. The sand allows better drainage of the water and warms up more easily, preventing the grapes from swelling up and all the problems that this causes. It spends 12 months in barriques before being bottled. It used to be 18 months but the vineyard has “matured” over the years and we have reduced the months of ageing. The 2014 vintage will be available this autumn.

Monferrato Rosso DOC 2014 60% Barbera, 20% Pinot Nero, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon e 10% Merlot

This wine was born in 1994 and was the first to be “fathered” by me. I’ve always loved pinot Noir : I bought a beautiful vineyard in Costigliole d’Asti. I wanted to experiment. I married it with what I was sure would be perfect, Barbera, and then with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2014 vintage is a blend with character and evident clout. A dance of red fruits and spices in the glass. Part refined in the bottle and part in oak barriques for 12 months.

Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG 2015My father spent a lot of time in the hills around Acqui Terme because he loved “pallone elastico”, a sort of handball played typically in the Monferrato area. And that’s how he began making Brachetto. Just out of interest, Braida was the “stradinom” (the nickname) they gave my grandfather, because they said he looked just like the pallone elastico champion whose name really was Braida. This year, our Brachetto has an amazing fragrance: try it with fresh fruit or as an aperitif with hazelnuts, almonds and pistachio nuts.

Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2014When you taste Montebruna, your mouth is filled with summer 2014, with a “syrup” that taste of grapes – to quote paolo Conte – concentrated naturally by the sun. It was a complex year, with rain falling until midsummer. Then the sun came out to beautifully ripen the grapes. The result is an extremely elegant Barbera. Achieved thanks to those who worked very hard in the vineyard, bravely thinning the grapes and waiting just the right amount of time before harvesting. We are satisfied. Montebruna spends 12 months ageing in large barrels made of Slavonian oak.

Montebruna, Land of roses, land of wineBefore we go any further, let me tell you this: here, where gorgeous roses grow, we are in the home of the finest red wines in the world. In the world. Let’s celebrate this Montebruna, with its half masculine-half feminine name, with this sacred adjective (brun or brune), using the poetic French word for a colour (brown) that’s sometimes enigmatic, a colour that leaves you in doubt as to whether it’s still day or already night (…”La Valse Brune, le chevalier de la lune” was given to us by the French, but we’ve done even better - with a verse written in our local dialect: “spunta’l sul e la lúna, e la lúna a Muncalé…” meaning “the sun and the moon rise, and the moon over Moncalieri”). Anyway, Montebruna is a Barbera (barbara barbisa berbera) and should be appreciated as such. I’m going to taste it without hiding the fact I’m an old wine-lover who remembers the taste and the bouquet of wines of the past, and for this precise reason only, looks down his nose a little at young wine tasters who, given their age, have still to discover that taste and that bouquet, and who, encouraged by their studies, search for scents of leather, the ‘tarry’ bouquet of liquorice, wilted flowers and lots more wonderful things.We sometimes used to smell peach, strawberry and violets in Barbera, but, above all, we looked for and found the taste of grapes. Barbera grapes (and, when the wine was full-bodied, paradoxically, cream).I’m going to taste this Montebruna alone, in the kitchen, eating grissini made in Asti, and, reflected in the mirror of my thoughts, I’ll see the wonderful, friendly and mischievous smile of Giacomo from Rocchetta…A pleasure rediscovered!
