Our Landfill System, Less Effective.

We could say that garbage and wastes has become one of the part of our lives, especially when

we live in a modern era like now when everything is not fully from nature like it was. Almost

every activity we do produce garbage. Also in fulfilling our needs, garbage and wastes has

always become the side effect. When eat, we produce garbage from our foods, when take a

bath, building a house, cooking, cleaning house and many other activities will generate garbage.

And it will be such a pain to know and realize when every single citizen in Indonesia could

generate garbage that much every day, just cant imagine what will happen next if this if leave

as it is. It can not be denied that the waste will always be a problem for this country, especially

about the quantity matter, the volume of garbage in Indonesia already exceeds the threshold.

Have you ever seen a mounting pile of garbage when moving through a city, especially major

cities in our country? I bet most of you have. For example, in Bandung, West Java, you can find

those dirty and nasty mountains in certain areas, which will ruin this citys scenery. That is one

example that shows an image of garbage dumping system in Indonesia. And I think that method

is less effective to be used as a way to solve this. Furthermore, statistics shows that major

urban centers in Indonesia produce nearly 10 million tons of garbage and waste annually that

increases 2-4 per cent annually. Even it is predicted that by 2019, the volume of waste in

Jakarta will exceed the capacity of Bantar Gebang landfill. We must concerned about this and

start thinking for a solution, so the problem can be handled appropriately with such an effective

and efficient landfill system before it will be worse and even become a bigger problem.

Moreover, the impacts caused by these garbage has already give many disadvantages for the

people who live in areas around the landfill. These garbage will cause bad smell and unpleasant

view, it also can be source of various diseases and also will pollute and contaminate ground

water that very important to citizen nearby for their life. But, even though our landfill system

has many deficiencies, as mentioned above, our current landfill system still have positive side,

that is the garbage is organized in a single place in each area, which far better than if it is

scattered in many places.

First, the garbage will cause bad smell. It is a sure thing that garbage can not be separated from

the term bad smell or stinks. These bad smells are come from spoiled food and other things

that full of microbes. People who live near the landfill dumping will suffer this every day, off

course this is not good because it can be distraction to their activity so that they will be difficult

to focus and concentrate. They will be bothered every time they feel something gross and

disgusting through their noise, its like that you forced to inhaled bad air because the air has

already contaminated with the bad aroma from the garbage, and your necessity for breathe the

fresh air is not fulfilled. This will bring many bad impacts, such as the children cannot

concentrate when they are playing or studying, also you will lost your appetite to eat something

in that uncomfortable condition. Your comrades, colleagues and friends maybe become

unwilling to visit your house because of this. Not only it will smelled for short distance, if the

mountain of garbage is way too huge because of it is not moved for a long time, the bad smell

can be smelled from miles away so more people are disturbed by this. Also, the bad smell is not

only come from the garbage directly, it can be come from the landfill workers that will spread

the smell even in wider range. Besides causing bad smell, this open landfill will makeunpleasant view to people who see it. Mountain of various garbage that makes our eyes feel

hurt, plus there will live dirty animals like rats and flies that disturb our vision even more.

Spoiled foods, plastics, cans, bottles, and some wet waste among those garbage is absolutely

dirty. Some people maybe cannot bear seeing this kind of view because of how disgusting it is.

Open public landfill really disturbs our smelling and vision as explained before and it make the

citizen feel really uncomfortable, so the government should noted it.

Next, the stacks of garbage that open and exposed to public is also can become source of

various diseases, as we will expect from such a dirty place. Diseases that caused by this are

various, starting from minor to major and severe ones. The most general disease that caused by

this garbage problem is respiratory disorder, which caused by nothing but the air that not fresh

enough to be inhaled by us. Furthermore, as we know, garbage is where pathogen bacteria,

microbes and even viruses are belongs to. They come from spoiled and dirtiness of those

garbage, its seems like that dirty places are have special attraction to them. Garbage is also a

good environment for disease-spreader animals like mosquito, rats, green flies, and others.

They can cause cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, typhus and even malaria. Its not good because all

of those diseases are kind of serious and need to be treated immediately and it can cause death

if not. Things will turn worse when the weather are not friendly to us, peoples immunity is

decreasing during that time and will more vulnerable and easy to get sick, especially for

children, this is will be a very serious threat because of their fragileness compared to adults.

And the citizens that live near the landfill must be prepared the extra protection for the sake of

their health if they dont want to get sick because of these microbes and animals. This is quite a

big problem, for sure, that caused by this open landfill system in Indonesia. Citizens health is

affected, so government must be pay attention more to this one because health is a vital thing

in life. Moreover, there is already many health crisis in Indonesia, it will be ironic if this will just

worsen that crisis.

In addition, open garbage dumping system, like in our country, will pollute and contaminate

ground water that is very important to citizen nearby for their live. Ground water is come from

water that seeps slowly into the ground and then collected in the certain layer of the ground,

the water can be from rain or anything else. Ground water is really essential for our life because

its like water repository which many water necessity is depend on this. Our daily water supply

is all from the ground water, for drinking water, for cooking, take a bath, washing clothes and

dishes, all from the ground. Thus, it will be a trouble when the ground water is polluted and

contaminated. Seems like that something which polluted the ground water, the contaminants,

is something like dirty liquid from the garbage. When those garbage are stay too long above the

ground surface, the liquid will seep to the ground and polluted the fresh ground water and

when rain comes, it seep faster and more water is polluted and its a disadvantage for people

who live nearby because their water source is mixed with dirty substances so they cannot feelsafe and hesitate to use the water. The contaminants from the garbage can be chemical,

pathogens, etc which can cause some changes, physical and non-physical, to the ground water

that maybe harmful to the citizens. And once again, one of citizens important needs is badly

interfered because of this inefficient landfill system.

However, although there are so many deficiencies and disadvantages of our current garbage

dumping system, there is still a positive side behind this. That is the garbage is currently

organized in a single place on each area or district, and this is just good because if those

garbage are randomly scattered, it will be difficult to manage, and maybe will be more messy

than the current system and more citizen will be disturbed by these side effects. Bad smell

everywhere, disgusting view everywhere, it far worse than our current system. You can imagine

when you traveling in a big city in Indonesia, you will see a mountain of garbage that disturbs

you in every few miles, its awful. But still, government need to do many changes, here and

there, in garbage dumping system so that the disadvantages decrease and the advantages

increase, as we - the citizens - always want.

The solution that can be taken by the government is to change the dumping system so it is not

disturb the citizens, or at last, less than how it going on now. For example, it can be started by

sorting the garbage into some categories so it will be more organized and neatly maintained.Then, the government should keep that the garbage made no contact with the ground directly

so it will not pollute and contaminate the ground water. The important thing is to make sure

that is no bacteria, microbes, or viruses from the landfill that will cause many diseases spread in

citizens environment. Quarantine system seems very effective to do those things. For addition,

government can make something like the recycling centre at each landfill so that some of the

garbage can recycled there and this will reduce the size of the mountain. This is also can give a

job to citizens around the location, to make them improve their creativity, also give them a

different experience which is better than if they just being a landfill worker who just struggling

between dirtiness, bad smell and diseases that maybe threaten them. And if the recycled

products have high value, it will be a jackpot because they will get economic advantage from

this.

In conclusion, our countrys - Indonesias - current public dumping system still has many

disadvantages for the citizens, especially who live near the landfill area, because it cause bad

and disgusting smell and unpleasant view that disturb and distract the citizens from their daily

activity and also ruin a citys beautiful scenery. Besides that, it also can be source of many

serious diseases that quite dangerous for the citizens because some of which can cause death.

And not less important, we need to remember that a mountain of garbage will pollute and

contaminate ground water which is the source of fresh water that really needed for us to live

the life. But, the advantage of this system is still exist, that is the garbage is organized in a singleplace on certain area instead of scattered. But the government need to do plenty changes in

the system so it will be less disadvantages for the citizens.
