Our Lady & St. Joseph, Aire Valley (incorporating SS. Mary & Monica, Cottingley and Sacred Heart, Bingley) Bradford Old Road Cottingley, Bingley BD16 1SA Tel 01274 567639 [prefix 1470 for ex-directory callers] Parish Priest: Fr. Sean Molloy email address: [email protected] Website: www.ourladyandstjoseph.org.uk Registered Charity Number 249404 THOUGHT FOR 19th Sunday of the Year (9th August 2020): God is to be found in all the circumstances of our lives. In quiet moments we often glimpse something of God's presence and in times of trouble we instinctively reach out to God. We need the patience of Elijah to detect God's sound in the gentle breeze, and the boldness of Peter to walk towards Christ when he calls us. First Reading: (1 Kgs 19:9.11-13). Fleeing for his life, the prophet Elijah takes refuge in a cave where he encounters God. Second Reading: (Rom 9:1-5). St. Paul tells us about the sorrow and anguish he suffers because his fellow Jews refused to accept Christ as the Messiah. Gospel: (Mt 14:22-33). When they are caught in high winds and rough seas, Jesus comes to the apostles, he calms their fears, and brings them peace. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THOUGHT FOR THE ASSUMPTION (16th August 2020): Two pregnant women who can't wait to compare notes! This is the picture of Mary and Elizabeth. Yet nei- ther could possibly have known the impact their children would have upon the world. And Mary was to mother her infant into the world to bring hope and reassurance. As model of faith and pattern of the Church on earth, she was finally to behold God at the moment of her death. Where she has gone we hope to follow. First Reading: (Rev 11:19;12:1-6.10). This describes the battle be- tween God and Satan, with the ultimate triumph of God. Mary and her Child were at the heart of that battle. Second Reading: (1 Cor 15:20-26). Christ is the new Adam who undoes the harm done by the old Adam. Gospel: (Lk 1:39-56). This tells of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, and contains the hymn of praise to God for His goodness to her and to His chosen people. Please remember in your prayers all who are sick at this time especially: Brenda Barker, Noel Bourke, Stella Dick, John Moran, Patrick Murphy, Jacob Kinsey, Christine Matthews, Fr. Chris Willis, Brian Marie, Richard Longden, Patricia Long, Bridget & Harry McKenna, Frank Crowther, Tony Shipman, Frieda Clapham, Thomas McCann, Elizabeth Hartley, Ian Harrison, Barbara Furniss, Camilla Devanny, Derek Armour, Geoff Lister and Billy Wilkinson. Please keep in your prayers those who have died recently: JIM DEMPSEY, MAGGIE WOOD-COLLINS, PATRICIA ELLIS, DOROTHY WEBSTER and CLAIRE BOYLE. GROUNDS AT COTTINGLEY: Thank you to the small team of people who have laboured during these past months to enhance the gardens and grounds at SS. Mary & Monica’s, Cottingley. A lot of effort goes into maintaining these and I am most grateful to those who put in time and effort (free of charge) to keep the grass and flower areas looking so appealing. TWIG (Third World Interest Group): A cheque for £200 has been sent to CAFOD to help with those countries struggling during this time of pandemic. Thank you for your support. ONE PEAK CHALLENGE: On Saturday 22nd August 2020, The Friars will be walking One Peak with The Kirton’s: Jackie, Alan and the 3 boys. This year due to COVID we are not asking for sponsorship. However, details of the walk are on the website so that if anyone wants to sponsor the Friars or take part they can. “We are planning to set off from Ribblehead, climbing Whernside, in the reverse way this year, as that will keep us away from most local residents. We will set off at 9.00am, in groups of 6 with a leader in each group. We will walk under the viaduct along the path at the bottom of Whernside until we come to an old barn where we turn right and go up the steep ascent to the top then back down what we would normally climb first. You will need to bring your own water and refreshments as there will be no supporting team this year. First aiders, leaders and back markers will all be walking with us." The just giving page is: St Patrick's Mission Walk SANCTUARY CANDLES: are lit each week in memory of your loved ones. Please keep the following in your prayers: 19th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR (9th August) BINGLEY: BROSNAN FAMILY COTTINGLEY: ANGELA HOLMES ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY (16th August) BINGLEY: KEVIN & MARGARET O’NEILL COTTINGLEY: ARTHUR & MARGARET JENNINGS & CHARLES, GERTRUDE & ERNEST HARRISON OUR LADY CANDLE: FLORENCE & NORMAN ACOMB UPDATE ON REOPENING OF CHURCH: ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SACRAMENTS AND LITUR- GICAL CELEBRATIONS TO REDUCE THE RISKS OF COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS TRANSMISSION: The obligation for the faithful to attend Holy Mass on a Sunday or Holy day of Obligation is removed, un- til further notice. With the re-opening of churches, Baptisms, Marriages and Funerals may now take place within Catholic churches and is limited to 30 people. Opening for Mass involves considerable organisation so it is with tremendous gratitude that I have to convey my thanks to all those who volunteered as stewards to ensure social distancing when the church is open and for church cleaning. The following will be implemented: The congregation will be restricted to fewer than 50 people. Social distancing of 2 metres with the wearing of face masks is mandatory. Cleaning of hands on entering and leaving church would be managed with alcohol gel. There must be extensive cleaning of the pews/chairs and contact areas both before and after Mass. Volunteers would need to be involved in cleaning and at least one of these stewards at each Mass must be DBS checked. The doors and windows, if possible, must be left open to allow the circulation of air. Until further instruction is given on singing, there should be no congregational singing at Mass. Toilet facilities will not be in use for the time being. The seating and movement within the church of those people attending is overseen by volunteer stewards; and, that the arrangements are in place for churches to be cleaned after use. The Parish Priest makes the final decision and there is no obligation on him to implement this until he feels it appropriate. Keeping all the above in mind, there will now be a cautious and careful commencement of Mass- es, initially at SS. Mary & Monica’s, Cottingley followed later by Sacred Heart, Bingley. A booking system will be implemented for those wishing to attend where you will be required to give your name, contact details and to wear a face covering. Therefore, the following dates of Mass and times to book are listed below. Phone the Presbytery on 01274 567639 to book. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO MASS UNLESS YOU HAVE PRE-BOOKED.
