DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra mis-ión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justi-cia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, continuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienestar de los más necesitados en general. Es así como nos esforzamos para hacer de nuestra comunidad parroquial una familia que comparte y se preocupa por sus miem-bros.

OLQP MISSION STATEMENT

Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedicat-ed to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, espe-cially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to en-courage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identify with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial harmo-ny and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the downtrodden everywhere. In this we strive for our parish commu-nity to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

All the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington are dispensed from the obliga-

tion to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

Face Coverings · You MUST wear a c loth face covering or

disposable face mask. Please bring your own. Parishes may

have a l imited supply designated for those in true need, not

for general distr ibution.

Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when

entering the church and encouraged to do so again

immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your

own hand sanitizer, which should contain at least 60% alcohol.

Youth Ministry GLEANING -- The October 3rd gleaning

event is cancelled. Due to the heavy rains, crops were im-

pacted and there is nothing to glean currently. Farmers are

hopeful the late fall harvest will improve, to hopefully re-

schedule for November.

NEWS FROM MEDOR: During this Season of Creation we can look to our twin par-ish for inspiration. Since 2010, Medor farmers have trans-planted over 762,000 tree seedlings from the nurseries onto their garden plots and the degraded hillsides. Over 900 farmers participate in the parish agro-forestry program, improving their environment by planting and caring for trees. They are role models in the fight against climate change. Timote Georges, Director of Smallholder Farmers Alliance, the organization which implements Medor’s agro-forestry program, likes to quote the famous Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Thank you to Our Lady Queen of Peace parish fpr supporting this important initiative in our sister parish.

MOTHER OF LIGHT CENTER -- Needs Volunteers

and a Van! The Mother of Light Center (MOLC) is a Cath-

olic organization which helps the poor throughout North-

ern Virginia. Specifically, MOLC delivers food to those in

need. MOLC needs volunteer drivers to deliver food Mon-

day-Saturday from 11-1pm and 1-3pm. Also, MOLC DESPER-

ATELY needs a van as it regularly transports up to 60 bags of

food at a time for deliveries. If you can help, please let us

MATTHEW 25 DONATIONS -- Now being accepted

ONLY on Thursday and Saturday and ONLY while the store is open from 9-11 am. There will be a bin near the back patio of the Ministry Center for new donations. The donation bins will continue to remain closed so that we can control and clean each new load of donations to keep our volun-teers safe. Thank you for understanding.

MATTHEW 25 NEEDS SORTING VOLUNTEERS

Because we do not have enough sorters, the bins will only

be available on Saturday from 9-4 or until the bin is full. We

LA RECOGIDA DE COSECHAS POR LOS ADOLESCENTES – La recogida de cosechas programada para el 3 de octubre se ha cancelado. Ha habido mucha lluvia que ha impactado las cosechas y no hay nada que recoger. Los agricultores esperan que la cosecha mejore para fines del otoño y, con suerte, espigaremos en noviembre.

NOTICIAS DE MEDOR: Durante esta Época de la Creación podemos buscar inspiración en nuestra parroquia hermana. EL CENTRO MOTHER OF LIGHT – ¡Necesita voluntarios y una camioneta (van)! El Centro Mother of Light (MOLC) es

OLQP’s Parish Office Building PREPARING FOR RENOVATION

Continuing with the Capital Campaign, the Parish Office Building is scheduled to be renovated next. We are now preparing to close the main office and move into our new temporary location (1915 S Edgewood St). We expect to be out of the parish office building by the end of the month; back in shortly after the first of the new year. Through this month’s transition office operations will continue, but we ask that you contact us by phone and email rather than drop by – our space will be a bit disheveled with boxes every-where! We are now at 1915 S Edgewood St.

CELEBRATING THE SEASON OF CREATION: In this five-

week period (Sept.1-Oct. 4), we focus on the many aspects of

God's gift of Creation. It is a time to reflect, pray and put into

practice ways we can become better stewards of our common

home. The Integrity of Creation ministry would like to point out

resources to guide you in this journey. Each week a member of

the committee will offer a bulletin article. For comprehensive

resources, consider two free series from the National Catholic

Reporter: "Lens on Creation" offers dramatic photos and faith sto-

ries from around the world, and "Earthbeat" provides the latest

news and content about faith, climate change and action.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) How can I develop a deeper relationship with God through pray-er? How can I integrate faith and work responsibilities? If you are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and practices, the RCIA is for you! Inquirers: The process is open to all those interested in learning about the Catholic tradition and considering joining the church, and those who are seeking to be confirmed. A new group is now forming, and our journey begins with a “no-strings” inquiry ses-sion on Thursday, October 22. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will begin meeting virtually using Zoom. Sponsors and Companions on the Journey: We are seeking mem-bers of our community who are willing to support our candidates during the RCIA journey. This can take several forms: journeying with a specific individual during the coming year as a sponsor or supporting one of our candidates through prayer and periodic messages of support. Companions are not required to attend our weekly RCIA sessions. Una comunidad católica con una ética consistente con la vida

“ED TALKS” Via ZOOM Join us on Zoom Wednesday, October 7, at 7pm. Kim

Daniels, Associate Director of the Initiative on Catholic

Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University,

will discuss why, as Catholics, we should vote. Zoom link

will be shared the weekend before the talk in the bulletin

and on our website. Please plan to attend.

YOUTH MINISTRY: 7th- 12th graders, join Us! The new

program year begins Sunday September 13th. We meet

on Sunday evenings at 7:00pm via Zoom. Monthly series

packets will be available for pick-up. The first series is on

Friendship. Regularly scheduled service projects and out-

side gatherings are also planned. The first project is sup-

porting the “GET OUT THE VOTE” Postcard efforts. Also

new this year will be a bi-monthly teen bible study on

Tuesday evenings, beginning September 15th. Please con-

To say that this is an unprecedented time is an understatement, isn’t it?! Little feels like it is as it should be, or we’d like it to be. Though life is rarely or never as we might wish, this current situation surpasses all we’ve ever lived through. And whoever thought it would last so long! No matter our age, 18 or 80, this is new. For some it may just be unsettling and uncomfortable, an inconvenience. For others, it may very well be the tipping point to underlying difficulties that were previously managea-ble. If this is true for you, whatever you do, DON’T BLAME YOURSELF. This is an extreme situation that tests all of us to our limits. Asking for help is not only ok, it is the healthiest and most courageous thing to do. Stephen Ministry is meant for just such occasions—when our own limits are broken through and it’s time to lean on someone else, to talk, to pray, and have a compassionate listener. Ste-phen Ministers are trained to help in situations like this. Ste-phen Ministry is confidential, nonjudgemental. It can address large overwhelming crises, or smaller, very temporary situa-tions. In this very unusual time of Coronavirus even small situa-tions can become magnified—-and that would not be unusual at all. Help and support is a phone call away. Celebrate the Season of Creation! All Creation is Interconnected Week 4– 09/27/2020

BIRDS – THREATENED INSPIRATION

“’Hope’ is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops - at all” – Emily Dickinson by Paul Pisano, Integrity of Creation team member and consultant to the American Bird Conservancy While it’s reasonable to think that nothing good can come from a pandemic, the events of this year have led to some positive behavior changes that we otherwise may have dismissed. Whether it’s for solace or diversion, many people have a newfound aware-ness of birds, and have taken up birdwatching (or birding) as a pastime. This bodes well for the birds, which need all the help they can get to reverse the downward slide they’ve been experiencing for the past five decades. In a timespan that’s shorter than my lifetime we’ve lost one in four birds – that’s 2.9 billion birds gone since 1970. What’s causing such a drastic decline? Scientists have studied this, and have deter-mined that it’s not just one cause, but a combination of factors. These factors include:

Habitat loss and habitat change, Invasive species, Disease, Energy development and production, and Human-caused mortalities.

This last factor, human-caused mortalities, warrants further exploration. The list of mortalities is long, which is both distressing, but also manageable. If we’re killing birds, whether directly or inadvertently, then we can implement changes to reverse those trends. The number one human-caused bird killer is outdoor cats. Whether they are our pets that we let roam around the neighborhood or feral colonies, cats kill over 1 billion birds each year in the United States. They are one of the most ecologically harmful invasive species, and unfortunately the populations of free-ranging cats are on the rise. Any effort to keep cats indoors makes a difference, and it’s easy to do. Our cat Sophie couldn’t be happier lounging around our house, watching the birds that come to the feeders. Other human-caused mortalities include agricultural chemicals, and collisions with buildings/windows, vehicles, power lines, and communication towers. Reducing those impacts isn’t easy, but it can be done, and the results would help many other animals, too, including us. And time is of the essence, as climate change is intensifying the stress that these birds already feel. While birds are very resilient, the combination of all the factors above have put many species under extreme stress. And while they may have been able to adapt to climate change before, they lack that ability now because they’re expending too much energy fighting disease or trying to find food while pesticides are killing all the insects they need to survive. There are many organizations leading the way to help both the birds and the planet, whether that’s through direct interventions such as protecting vital lands, legal action, or education and advocacy. Additional information about some of those leading the conserva-tion efforts can be found at 3billionbirds.org, audubon.org (National Audubon Society), and abcbirds.org (American Bird Conservan-cy). Conservation actions work, and there is no time to lose. If you’ve recently developed an interest in birding, there are many resources available to you, from books to bird clubs, and phone apps to websites. Mientras que es razonable pensar que nada bueno puede venir de una pandemia, los eventos de esta año han llevado a algunos buenos cambios de comportamiento que de lo contrario hubiéramos podido descartar. Ya sea por la tranquilidad o la diversión, muchas personas han empezado a observar las aves como un pasatiempo. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today we observe the 106th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, a day set aside by the Church more than a century ago to recognize the millions of people worldwide who every year are forcibly displaced from their homes by violent conflict, terrorism, persecution, natu-ral disaster, or extreme poverty. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, choose as a theme for this year's observance "Forced like Jesus Christ to flee," as a reminder of how Jesus and the Holy Family were themselves refugees, forced to flee to the land of Egypt.

Pope Francis reminds us that we should listen to the stories of migrants and refugees, including those who now live in our communities. Many will never be able to return to their homes. Others come to us through the refugee resettlement program after an intense multi -year vetting process. The Holy Father reminds us that when we see the faces of migrants and refugees, we see the face of Christ who pleads with us to help (cf. Mt 25:31 -46).

Please be assured of my prayers for you. Through the intercession of Mary our Mother and Saint Joseph, may Our Lord Jesus bless you and keep you in His care.

Hoy observamos la 106a Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado, un día reservado por la Iglesia hace más de un siglo para reconocer a los millones de personas alrededor del mundo que cada año enfrentan desplazamiento forzado de sus hogares por conflictos violentos, terrorismo, persecución, desastres naturales o extrema pobre-za. El tema de la observancia del presente año escogido por nuestro Santo Padre, el Pa-pa Francisco, es "Como Jesucristo, obligados a huir", como recordatorio de que Jesús y la Sagrada Familia fueron refugiados, forzados a huir a la tierra de Egipto.

El Papa Francisco nos recuerda que debemos escuchar los relator de los migran-tes y refugiados, incluso de quienes ahora viven en nuestras comunidades. Muchos no podrán regresar nunca a sus hogares. Otros llegan a nosotros por medio de los progra-mas de reasentamiento de refugiados después de un intenso proceso de evaluación de varios años. El Santo Padre nos recuerda que cuando vemos la cara de los migrantes y refugiados, vemos el rostro de Cristo que implora nuestra ayuda (San Mateo 25:31 -46).
