NEW TO THE PARISH? If you are new to the Parish, please fill out a Registration Form available in the foyer and drop it in the Collection Basket. If you would like Donation Envelopes and/or the BC Catholic please remember to check the boxes on the registration form. For those already registered, any changes such as your address, tel. #, etc., please contact the Parish Office at 604 942-7808. Direct Deposit is a good option for your giving. The blue form for regular Sunday contribution is taken on the 1st of each month and the pink form for the Building Fund is taken on the 15th of each month. NB: The Building Fund contributions are not taxed by the Diocese, whereas the regular Sunday contributions are taxed at 14%.

2017 CHURCH DONATION ENVELOPES Are available for pick up in the Vestibule (not the same # as 2016). If you would like a 2017 box of envelopes , please sign up in the binder provided (by the bulletin board in the Vestibule) and they will then be out by next Sunday for pickup in the Vestibule.

PROJECT ADVANCE 2016 FINAL REPORT

"LIVE GRATEFULLY, GIVE GENEROUSLY": WE MADE IT! Thanks to all our parishioners who generously shared their gifts from God, we were able to surpass our $160,000 goal for the first time ever. As you know, last year we added a contribution from Project Advance towards the new "Nativity" stained glass window. The response from our parishioners was amazing! We are happy to report that our total amount of pledges received for 2016 was $162,019.36. Once more thank you all for your generous hearts and may God bless you throughout 2017 and pour.His mercy on you all.

The New Testament is explicit: there is one Law of Christ and it is new. Far from abolishing the old Law, this Law fulfills it by emphasizing interior observance. This law calls for justice which surpasses that of the scribes and

Pharisees. This law is radical because the call of Jesus goes beyond the letter to a more authentic life. For Jesus, the human heart is decisive. Hatred is prohibited: anger is the beginning of murder. Coveting another’s spouse is forbidden: there are looks which are as bad as adultery. Repudiation of a spouse is not allowed: this can only come from hardness of heart.(Matt 19:8). The making of oaths, true or false, is not permitted: it is enough to be fully committed to our word. We who believe that the gospel is not some sweet, indulgent consolation, are confronted by unprecedented demands without compromise. We could have the impression of being trapped. Why should we be surprised that there is within us as in the disciples something that is indignant, when Jesus abruptly declares that riches are an impediment to the kingdom: “Then who can be saved?” (Mark 10:26). Christian morality is impossible without the support of life in Christ, consciously lived. Without him, we can do nothing. With him, everything is possible. To put on the mind of Christ is the only way to fulfill the law in spirit and in truth.

The Knights of Columbus is hosting the Free Throw Championships at Archbishop Carney’s Gym on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017. Registration starts at 12:30pm and the free event is open to all girls and boys 9 - 14 years old from Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge. Snacks and juice provided. PREP / SCHOOL NEWS: LOOKING AHEAD 1st Confession for Prep are at 4/6pm and for the school students- 7:00pm on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

A planning meeting for the Spring Festival is being held on Thursday, Feb. 16 @ 7:00pm in the School staff room. We hope that a representative from each Parish group can attend this important meeting. Hope to see you there.

Ron with an Easter Week Pilgrimage to Alabama to visit EWTN and the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament (Tomb of Mother Angelica). Then we bus to the Mother House of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville. There, we will join a few Assumption School staff members in their visit to school sites and a half- day of recollection in the Mother House (Site Tours, too, to the “Grand Ole Oprey and Jack Daniels”). ONGOING HEAR YE, HEAR YE:

RCIA Monday’s @ 7:00pm in the Assumption Centre. The Talks on the Faith using the help of the ‘Symbolon’ program is led by Fr. Edwin Neufeld. The series is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the Catholic Faith, including those who might be interested in becoming Catholic.

The Cantonese Prayer Group Class (2nd and 4th Friday) @ 10:00am -12:00pm in the Assumption Centre.

Choir: For the 11:00am Sunday Choir there is a practice every Wed. @ 8pm in the Church. Come and join us!

ASSUMPTION BINGO: Fridays at 6:20 pm in the School outreach to the neighbourhood. Come and support our Bingo. Thank you.

LINE DANCING: Has resumed @ Assumption School Gym on Saturdays @ 10:30 am to 11:45 am. Fee for the new session is $25 for 10 classes or drop-in fee of $4/class. All proceeds after expenses will be donated to Assumption Parish. (No Class on Sat. Feb. 25)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Eucharistic Adoration in our Chapel

We are looking for Eucharistic Adorers for the following days and times: Tuesday’s: 3-4pm, 4-5pm, 5-6pm, Friday’s: 4-5pm and 5-6pm. Stewardship Reflection 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“…For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear - it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

MAINTAINING A PRAYERFUL ENVIRONMENT

The procession to and from the communion rail is a liturgical act, done slowly and reverently. Please make way for those who have already received, as they are “living tabernacles” of the Lord’s presence, to be deferred to in courtesy and faith. Also, we ask that once you have received the Eucharist, you not linger at the rail, but allow others also to approach the rail after you. Thank you. …
