From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, A cantor was practicing today’s psalm response, “The Lord is kind and merciful” with her young daughter but the youngster sang, “The Lord is kind of merciful!” There is a great difference between being kind and merciful and being kind of merciful! Our Holy Father’s challenge in this Jubilee Year of Mercy is not only that we remember that the Lord is kind and merciful but that we also be instruments of mercy. “Be merciful and mercy will be yours,” says the Lord. God’s mercy hinges if you will on the mercy, we show to others. The Lord also tells us: “The measure with which you measure, will be measured out to you.” Now, there is a Lenten meditation! In dealing with others, with our spouse, with our children, should not our “measure” be that of great mercy and not that of harshness? If we desire to receive mercy from God we must give it. Today’s Gospel presents the Lord’s parable of the unproductive fig tree. Perhaps during this holy season, the spiritual fruit we should cultivate is precisely that of mercy. Last Saturday, our young parishioners preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation made a retreat, “You Will Receive Power” in preparation for the Gift of the Holy Spirit. I was very much impressed with their positive spirit throughout the day that was under the enthusiastic direction of the young men and women of NET ministries (National Evangelization Team). I am most grateful to our Religious Education staff, our parent volunteers, catechists, and the families who hosted the fourteen NET team members who came from all parts of our country. I bring to a close this week’s message by expressing my sincere thanks to all who completed our parish survey! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Family Game Night! Friday, March 11
5 - 9 p.m. Our Lady of Sorrows Church Hall
Unplug from all your devices and distractions and spend an evening as a family. Bring your favorite board game and a snack to share. All are welcome!
Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire a Frè-mm ak Sè-m yo: Yon animatè t'ap pratike repons Sòm jodia: avèk pitif fi li "Granmèt la bon epi li gen sansib" men pitit fi a t'ap chante: "Granmèt la gen bon kè sansib". Gen yon gwo diferans ant bon epi gen kè sansib! Defi Pap nou an nan lane jibile mizèrikòd sa a se pa selman fè nou sonje ke Granmèt nou an bon epi li gen kè sansib men egalman nou se enstriman Mizèrikòd la. Koulye a gen yon meditasyon TanKarèm! Nan rapò nou avèk lòt moun, avèk mari oswa madanm, avèk timoun nou yo, pa ta kab mezire mizèrikòd epi pa aji avèk severite. Si nou vle resevwa mizèrikòd Bondye a, nou dwe bay li. Levanjil jodia prezante parabòl Granmèt la sou pye fig ki pa donnen fui a. Petèt pandan sezon sent lan, fui espirityèl nou dwe kiltive a se presizeman fui mizèrikòd la. Samdi pase, jèn pawasyen nou yo kap prepare pou Sakreman Konfimasyon te fè yon retrèt, "w pral resevwa yon fòs" an preparasyon pou kado LespriSen an. Mwen te vrèman enpresyone pa espri pozitiv yo tout lajounen an kite sou direksyon antousyas de jèn gason ak fanm ministè NET yo (National Evangelisation Team). Mwen trè rekonesan a pèsonèl anseyan relijye nou an, paran, moun kap anseye katechis avèk fanmi yo ki te akeyi manm 14e ekip NET la ki te vini nan tout kwen peyi nou an. Map fini ak mesaj semèn sa a pandan map eksprime sensè remèsiman mwen a tout moun ki te konplete sève pawas nou an. Avèk afeksyon,
Msgr. Gervasio

A Peek at What's Coming March 13-16 What does the Holy Trinity have to do with you? Why and how is it misunderstood today? Why and when was it misunderstood in the past? Why has the doctrine lasted? Why is it important to us and to the world today? Are there any hints in the Old Testament about the Trinity? Why did Jesus refer to the First Person as “Father?” What was fatherhood like in the days of Jesus . . . what is it like today? How does Jesus illustrate the nature of his Father? What are we to understand about this teaching? How is it relevant to us today? Come to the Parish Mission at Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony to gain insight into these questions. The Annual Catholic Appeal—In Action!
Ministry of Catechesis, Lay Formation, and Evangelization
Each parish and Catholic school is unique and offers religious education in ways that meet the needs of over 50,000 students in the local community. Some program structures are very traditional; others are innovative. Even as adults we seek to learn more about our faith and deepen our relationship with God. Some adults want to know more, some adults want to grow in their prayer life. About 300 adults are brought to full initiation with the Church in our diocese each year. Many opportunities for the enrichment of faith are found in events and activities in parishes throughout the diocese, such as Bible Study, parish missions, lecture series, and online learning. These ministries help with adult faith enrichment by providing support for parish leaders and access to resources. Your gift, in essence, builds up our Catholic faith.
OLS PTA Seeking Donations The Our Lady of Sorrows School PTA is beginning to prepare for our 2016 Knight to Remember. In order to make this a successful event, we need donations of new unused items to auction off at the event. If you have any old gifts/items you have never used or returned, please consider donating them to our event. Please drop off items at the school office or call Deborah Kisselman (439-2667) to arrange for pick-up. Fridays of Lent Are Days of Abstinence This means that Catholics over 14 years of age must abstain from meat (and soup or gravy made from meat) on Fridays of Lent. This includes Ash Wednesday and Good Friday which are also days when we are obliged to fast.

The Rosary Altar Society is conducting its annual Palm Cross Sale, which is a fundraiser for our parish. The Palm Crosses are approximately 12″ wide and 20″ high, and are made of looped and gathered palms on a wooden cross with an artificial flower and bow that are mounted on a stake. They are a very suitable adornment for the cemetery. Palm Crosses will be available for pick-up the weekend of March 12 and 13—order cut-off date is March 6. The Palm Crosses are $10 each. Please complete the order form below and drop it in the collection basket or return it to the Parish Office in an envelope marked Palm Cross Order with your check made payable to the Rosary Altar Society. Thank you for your continued support.

A Lenten Program of Sacrifice to Provide Clean Sanitation to Families at Fr. Gene’s Parish, Sacred Heart Church in Tamil Nadu, India
Once again this year, Msgr. Gervasio and the Social Justice Committee are happy to announce that our Lenten Work of Mercy will be to help our dear friend, Fr Eugene Savarimuthu, care for the people of his parish. Fr. Gene returned to India after serving the people of OLS-SA for 6 years, and became the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sikkalnayaganpet parish, a part of the diocese of Kumbankonam in Tamilnadu, India. Last year, he undertook a major project to build a community center where the people could gather for celebrations, classes, after school programs, health clinics and more. We raised $25,000 and now the community center is 90% complete. Fr Gene tells us that they will formally open and dedicate the community center on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19. A plaque will commemorate the sacrifices made by the people of OLS-SA to build the center. Already, the center is being used to hold sewing classes for local women, to house the after school program, and to host parish gatherings. All the people of Fr Gene’s parish know the name “Our Lady of Sorrows-St Anthony” and remember us and our intentions in their prayers. Fr Gene’s parish is in a very rural region of India where there are sanitation problems beyond Western imagination. With its 1.25 billion inhabitants, nearly 800 million people in the country live without basic sanitation. Approximately 65% of the people are forced to defecate in the open. Open defecation spreads diseases like cholera and E. coli and contaminates unprotected water sources. It also causes a serious safety problem for the girls and women in the villages. The lack of toilets in their homes exposes women to the risk of being harassed or raped when they rise at night or before dawn in search of a little privacy to attend to their toiletry needs in the fields. Fr. Gene wants to have every home in his parish equipped with a sanitary toilet. His goal is to provide 50 toilets
this year. Men and women from each family in the village will contribute their own time, energy, and labor to build
their own toilet for their house. He asks our help in providing some of the costs for materials.
Fr Gene and members of his parish have framed a construction plan that could be achieved through collaboration of various resources. They plan to buy the construction materials locally. Funding for the project would come from multiple sources: 25% from local government, 25% from the parish, 25% from the individual family, and 25% from our Lenten sacrifices. By providing these toilets, we will be empowering the people of Fr Gene’s parish to better their own lives, to improve their health and especially to provide dignity and safety to the girls and women of the villages. Give up anything you want for Lent—candy, “fast food,” ice cream, cookies. Each week, calculate how much money you saved and bring it to church to put in one of the Lenten Work of Mercy cans at the exits. Pray! Pray for Fr Gene, pray for the people of his parish, and pray that our own hearts will be transformed through our sacrifices.
Fr. Gene at a program for the youth of his parish.
