Generations of Catholics have used their Lenten sacrifice to alle-viate hunger caused by poverty and to improve the lives of individuals and families in developing countries as well as in their own communi-ties. How we all come together as communities of faith to help those in need are stories worth telling. This year, as in previous years, we

have the opportunity to share the love and mercy of God with others during the season of Lent. We unite with more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s rice bowl in the back of the church. Please don’t forget, that during the 40 days of Lent, we are called to reflect on the challenge of global hunger and how it affects our human family; and remember that your Lenten sacrifices can change lives. RCIA: The Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election RICA: El Rito de Envio y el Rito de Elección

Adultos, adolescentes y niños en edad catequética que buscan ingresar a la Iglesia Católica a través del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (RICA) han es-tado viviendo una larga jornada espiritual, explorando sus relaciones con Dios y con la comunidad de la Igle-sia. Durante ese tiempo han profundizado su fe, han aprendido acerca de la Palabra de Dios, las ense-ñanzas de la Iglesia, la comunidad, la oración y las obras apostólicas de servicio a los demás. Este ha sido un tiempo importante para profundizar su comprensión de lo que significa ser católico y discípulo de Jesucristo. Hoy marca un peldaño muy importante en su proceso; en las Misas de 9:30 a.m. y de 5:30 p.m. estamos celebrando el Rito de Envío para nuestros catecúmenos. En este rito, sus nombres serán inscritos en el Libro de los Elegidos; luego la parroquia envía formalmente a los catecúmenos para la Elección por parte del obispo. Los catecúmenos, sus esponsores y sus familiares se reunirán el próximo sábado 29 de febrero en la Iglesia Católi-ca Saint Catherine of Siena en Kennesaw para su Rito de Elec-ción. Allí los catecúmenos expresarán públicamente al obispo su deseo de bautizarse. El obispo a su vez los aceptará entre los Elegidos de Dios y los bendecirá para que regresen a nues-tra Parroquia para celebrar los Sacramentos de Iniciación. Así como hemos orado por ellos cada fin de semana en las oraciones de intercesión, unámonos hoy en una oración especial al continuar con los catecúmenos en su jornada hacia la plenitud de la vida. Escúchanos y da a tus catecúmenos claridad en la inteligencia, firmeza en la fe y conocimiento seguro de la verdad, Para que progresen día a día en toda virtud, reciban en el momento oportuno la regeneración del Bautismo para el perdón de los pecados y glorifiquen tu nombre con nosotros. Adults, teenagers and children of catechetical age who are seeking to enter the Catholic Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) have been on a long spiritual journey, exploring their rela-tionships with God and the Church community. Dur-ing that time they have deepened their faith, they have learned about the word of God, the teachings of the Church, the community, prayer and apostolic works of service for others. It has been an important time to deepen their understanding of what it means to be Catholic and a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Today marks a milestone in their process; at the 9:30 a.m. and the 5:30 p.m. Masses, we are celebrating the Rite of Sending for our catechumens. At this rite, their names are en-rolled in the Book of the Elect; then the Parish formally sends the catechumens for Election by the Bishop. The catechu-mens, their sponsors, and families will gather next Saturday, February 29 at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Kennesaw for their Rite of Election. There the catechumens will publicly express to the bishop their desire for baptism. The bishop in turn will accept them among the Elect of God, and will bless them to return to our Parish to celebrate the Sacra-ments of Initiation. Today is a special day for us as well because as a Church formally ratify the Catechumens’ readiness for the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. As we have prayed for them every weekend at the prayers of intercession, let us join today in a special prayer as we continue with the catechumens on their journey to the fullness of life. Loving God, you have sent your only Son, Jesus Christ, to free the world from falsehood. Give to your catechumens fullness of understanding, unwavering faith, and a firm grasp of your truth. Let them grow ever stronger, that they may receive in due time the new birth of baptism that gives pardon of sins, and join with us in praising your name. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Cuaresma: Tiempo de Gracia que se aproxima

La Cuaresma en Our Lady of La Salette

La Cuaresma es una época de oración, ayuno y caridad; es como un retiro espiritual que nos llama a renovar nuestros corazones y a reno-var el compromiso de vivir nuestras promesas bautismales. Con el fin de ver que nuestra prepa-ración para la Pascua tenga un carácter colectivo, y no sólo una dimensión individual, la Iglesia nos da ciertas normas para la celebración común de la Cuaresma. Las directrices para la Cuaresma en la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta son las siguientes: § El Miércoles de Ceniza (26 de febrero) marca el inicio de la Cuar-esma, y es un día de ayuno y abstinencia universal. § A través de la Cuaresma, se observan las siguientes normas so-bre ayuno y abstinencia: La abstinencia de comer carne se observa el Miércoles de Ceni-za (26 de febrero,) el Viernes Santo (10 de abril) y todos los viernes de Cuaresma; en esos días todos los católicos de 14 años en ade-lante se abstienen de comer carne. El ayuno para todos los católicos de 18 a 59 años de edad se observa el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Quienes deben observar esta norma pueden tomar sólo una comida completa al dia. Se permiten dos comidas pequeñas para mantener la fuerza, según las necesidades de cada persona, pero no se permite ingerir alimen-tos sólidos entre las comidas. Quienes se encuentren enfermos, las mujeres embarazadas o que estén lactando, o aquellas personas cuya salud podría afectarse adversamente por el ayuno o la abstinencia, no deben considerarse limitados por estas normas.

§ Durante la temporada de la Cuaresma, estamos llamados a acoger la penitencia y a realizar obras de caridad que reflejen nues-tro deseo de una conversión de corazón. También, estamos llamados de manera especial a orar todos con fervor por los cate-cúmenos que este año celebrarán los Sacramentos de Pascua con nosotros.

Lent: Time of Grace approaching

Lent at Our Lady of La Salette Lent is a season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving; it is like a spiritual retreat calling us to a renewal of heart and a re-commitment to our baptismal promises. In order to see that our preparation for Easter has a communal, and not just an individ-ual dimension, the Church gives us certain norms for a com-mon Lenten observance. The Lenten guidelines for the Arch-diocese of Atlanta are as follows: § Ash Wednesday (February 26) marks the beginning of Lent, and is a day of universal fasting and abstinence. § The following fasting and abstinence regulations are ob-served throughout Lent: Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday

by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59 years of age. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

§ During the season of Lent, we are all called to embrace penances and to perform works of charity that reflect our desire for conversion of heart. Also, during Lent we are especially called to pray fervently for the Catechumens who will celebrate the Easter Sacraments with us this year.
