Howdy,
Yes, it is October and I have to tell you that
I am excited. In two weeks we will cele-
brate our Parish Unity Festival...and this
year I will be there! The past couple of
years our festival has been scheduled when I
am in Mexico, but not this year. As you can
tell I have missed this wonderful celebration
with you all.
Of course, there will be food and rides, and
food and games, and food and
dancing...and did I mention FOOD! It is so
much fun to walk through the ride area and
see our children’s faces as they run from
one ride to another. Also, it is great because
many of our school graduates and many for-
mer parishioners come to celebrate with us.
Our school office has ride bracelets for sale
that give you a discount on the cost of rides.
Also, there are food coupons for discounted
food sales. Mark your calendars for Octo-
ber 26-28 (Friday –Sunday). It is OK to
come more than one day. Also, please re-
member that we traditionally
cancel confessions on Saturday, October 27,
due to the festival.
Pax,
Father Mike
emocionado. En dos semanas celebraremos
nuestro Festival de Unidad Parroquial ... ¡y
este año estaré ahí! El último par de años
nuestro festival ha sido programado cuando
estoy en México, pero no este año. Como
pueden ver, me he perdido esta maravillosa
celebración con todos ustedes.
Por supuesto, habrá comida y juegos
mecánicos, y comida y juegos, comida y
baile ... ¡y COMIDA!
graduados y muchos antiguos feligreses
(viernes a domingo). Está bien venir más de
un día. Además, recuerde que tradicional-
mente cancelamos las confesiones el sábado
27 de octubre debido al festival.
Paz,
Padre Mike

OPUESTOS
divisiones internas, esa familia no podrá subsis-
tir” (Mc 3:25).

Opposites
Adam was given the task of naming all the animals
in the garden. As amazing as they all were, none
complimented his body or had his intellect. Adam
longed for compatibility and relationship so God
made a suitable partner for Adam from his very own
body. When Adam looked at the gift of Eve,
provided by the Father, he exclaimed “At last, here
is one of my own kind, bone taken from my bone,
and flesh taken my flesh” (Gen 2:23).
Causing the spouses to forget they are one, that they
need to cling to each other, that God made them for
each other are all part of the constant attack against
marriage. The attack of the serpent was just the first
of the constant attacks against spousal unity.
Spouses would be attacked both inside and outside
the garden for all time. The best way to attack is to
divide spouses so they will fight each other. “If a
house is divided against itself, that house will not be
able to stand” (MK 3:25). This has been the best
way to defeat marriage.
Some use the terms “opposite sex” or “battle
between the sexes” indicating an oppositional rela-
tionship between male and female. In battle, there
are enemies and the pain of loss. God intended
spouses to love one another as they are compatible,
compliment, complete and form a community that
grows in love.
Share this with your spouse. Are you a house
divi-ded? Do you battle each other? Don’t fall
victim to the snakes of anger, fear and self-
centeredness in your marriage. Remember your
spouse is your sacrament, not the enemy. In the
Garden of Eden, God created them male and female,
He gave Adam his bride as a helpmate and she was
designed from him and for him. She was the same,
but different and the difference is compliments and
is not to be combative. Love one another as Christ
loves His bride the Church.
Next weekend, we will cele-
brate World Mission Sunday.
Pope Francis invites the entire
Church to support the mission
dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of
Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and
lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communi-
ties. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers, and
be generous in next week’s collection for the
Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Now is the time for lay people to redirect our
sight away from the treasures of this world and
toward Jesus. The psalmist reminds us that
when our hearts are filled with God’s love we
are joy filled! But, we too often live as if we
don’t believe this. The man in today’s Gospel
went away sad because he had many riches. He
missed out on the joy that could have been his
if he had only received the loving gaze of Je-
sus. The Gospel writer says, “Jesus looked at
him with love.” But rather than receiving the
spiritual riches Jesus wanted to give him, he
walked away. His many riches made him sad!
In what ways do we turn away from Jesus’ lov-
ing gaze? Are there children or grandchildren
in our lives who look at us with God’s love? Is
some material good more important than re-
ceiving their love and loving them in return?
Brothers and sisters, if we live what Jesus
taught us, we will sing for joy! Have our long
hours of work to pay for a better house and
newer car left us sadly walking away from Je-
sus? It’s not too late! Let us turn to him and
receive his love and we will sing for joy!
