The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Liturgical Year C

First Reading Am 8:4-7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I for-get a thing they have done! Responsorial Psalm Ps 113:1-2, 4-6, 7-8 Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. Second Reading 1 Tm 2:1-8 There is also one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all. Gospel Lk 16:1-13 No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other.

Reflections of Today’s Gospel Today's Gospel sounds puzzling to contemporary read-ers, but it can be made less so by con-sidering the eco-nomic system which stands behind the parable. A steward is dismissed because he is squandering his master's property. He is called dishon-est because he is not serving the interests of the rich man, his employer. In response the steward, in an attempt to ensure fa-vor for himself among the rich man's debtors, brokers repay-ment of the rich man's loans by foregoing the interest and fees that had been levied to line the steward's pockets. It is this ac-tion, in which the steward puts aside his greed and takes the longer perspective in order to enhance his security, which is commended by the rich man. The passage concludes with three morals for the listeners. The first exhorts the listener to be prudent about the use of wealth. Like the steward in the parable, those who would follow Jesus must put transitory affairs in proper perspective. Christians should handle the affairs of temporal life with an eye toward eternal life. The second concerns trustworthiness. Those who can be trusted in small things can also be trusted in great things. If Christians handle money and other passing things responsibly, then they can also be trusted with the affairs of the Kingdom of God. Finally, Jesus tells his listeners that no one can serve two mas-ters simultaneously. God must be put ahead of money. https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-year/sunday-connection/25th-sunday-in-ordinary-time-c-sunday-connection

The Vocation and Mission of the People of God: “A Chosen Race, a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Na-tion” But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were no people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy. (I Peter 2:9-10)

Second, we recognize that both of our

churches have often been affected by

a strong emphasis on the vocation

and ministry of the clergy, even to the

neglect of the ministry of the laity. A

lay person has frequently been as-

sumed, as in I Clement, simply to be

one who is not ordained (see above,

n. 2). This perspective appears to

neglect the proper, wider vocation of every Christian disciple, as

that is rooted in Christ’s call and in baptism.

We have come, therefore, to recognize the need to articu-late together a common perspective on the People of God and the vocation and ministry of lay persons and the ordained within it, espe-cially in light of contempo-rary challenges both in the Church and in society. From the beginning of our Consul-tation in 1965, lay theologians, both women and men, have been full and active participants. We gratefully affirm their contri-butions, and believe that our North American Consultation can take a distinctive part in this important discussion. It is in that spirit that we respectfully submit this statement to our churches. ….. St. Padre Pio - Feastday: September 23 Patron of Civil defense volunteers, Adolescents, Pietrelcina, Stress relief, & January blues Birth: 1887; Death: 1968 Canonized By: Pope John Paul II St. Padre Pio was an Italian priest who was known for his piety and charity, as well as the gift of the stigmata, which has never been explained. St. Padre Pio was born Francesco For-gione, on May 25, 1887, in Pietrelcina, Italy. His parents were peasant farmers. He had an older brother and three younger sisters, as well as two other siblings who died in infancy. As a child, he was very religious and by the age of five he reportedly made the deci-sion to dedicate his life to God. Fortunately, his parents were also very religious and they sup-ported his Catholic development. His family attended daily Mass. Francisco served as an altar boy at his local parish. Fran-cisco was known for taking on penances and his mother once scolded him for sleeping on a stone floor. Francisco's community was also supportive. Saint's days were popular celebrations and commonly celebrated in his town. https://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=311

St. Vincent de Paul - September 27 St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor peasant family in the French village of Pouy on April 24, 1581. His first formal education was provided by the Francis-cans. He did so well, he was hired to tutor the children of a nearby wealthy family. He used the monies he earned teaching to continue his formal studies at the Univer-sity of Toulose where he studied theology. He was ordained in 1600 and remained in Toulose for a time. In 1605, while on a ship traveling from Marseilles to Narbone, he was captured, brought to Tunis and sold as a slave. Two years later he and his master managed to escape and both re-turned to France. St. Vincent went to Avignon and later to Rome to continue his studies. While there he became a chaplain to the Count of Goigny and was placed in charge of distributing money to the deserving poor. He became pastor of a small parish in Clichy for a short period of time, while also serving as a tutor and spiritual director. From that point forward he spent his life preaching missions to and providing relief to the poor. He even established hospitals for them. This work became his passion. He later extended his con-cern and ministry to convicts. The need to evangelize and assist these souls was so great and the demands beyond his own ability to meet that he founded the Ladies of Charity, a lay institute of woman, to help, as well as a religious institute of priests - the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians.

Pope thanks Our Lady upon return to Rome from Ap-ostolic Journey Pope Francis offers a prayer to Mary upon his return to Rome after his Apostolic Journey to Mozambique, Madagascar, and Mauritius.

The papal plane touched down at Rome’s Ciampino airport in the early evening on Tuesday. As he does after all visits abroad, Pope Francis made his way to the Basilica of St Mary Major to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the successful conclusion of his Apostolic Journey to south-ern Africa. Placing a bouquet of flowers before the ancient icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani, the Pope paused for a moment to pray silently. Then he returned by car to the Vatican for some much-needed rest. Pope Francis spent the last 6 days making his 31st Apostolic Journey abroad, visiting Mozambique, Madagascar, and Mauri-tius. https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2019-09/pope-francis-prays-saint-mary-major-after-journey.html

Dear Parishioner, The Archbishop of Seattle and his staff meet regularly with pastors to help them review their ministry. This feedback form is an important part of that ongoing review process in which I now invite you to participate. The questions are about the dif-ferent ways I, as your pastor, have assisted in your formation as a disciple of Jesus. All of your responses will be held in confidence and the report prepared for me will not identify any individual. The only per-son who will see your name (which is requested at the end of the survey) is the Director of Research for the Archdiocese. I encourage you to fill out this short survey. The experiences you share will help us evaluate our parish life and leadership, my effectiveness as your Pastor, and will show how we can, together, become more effective followers of Jesus Christ.
