Reflection from Fr. Andres

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B Readings: Jeremiah 31:7-9; Hebrew 5:1-6; Mark 10: 46-52 “Master, I want to see." This Sunday we celebrate the presence of Christ, who opens our eyes to see the marvels God does for us in his Son Jesus Christ. The first reading underlines God’s special attention, and love for those on the margins of society. In this reading, the proph-et Jeremiah foresee the coming deliverance of the Israelites from their Babylonian exile, and proclaims that good news with joy, and praise to the Lord, who has delivered his people. The passage is a hymn of praise, and rejoicing, because of what God is about to do for his peo-ple. The people sing aloud with gladness, displaying endless echoes of thanksgiving to God, who has delivered the weak, the lame, those with children, and those in labor. These were the ones, who had received spiritual sight; the ones enabled to know, and understand the right-eousness of the Lord, who saves. It is not by chance therefore that Jeremiah speaks of the Lord gathering from the ends of the world the lame, the blind, women with children, and those in labor. These are persons, who are not only afflicted, but often ignored, and even si-lenced in society. This prophecy serves as the context for the Gospel passage of this Sunday. The Gospel passage is about the healing of the blind man, Barti-maeus (son of Timaeus). Jesus leaves Jericho, the final part of his journey to Jerusalem. Mark uses this story to highlight the sharp con-trast between the disciples, who so far have failed to understand him, and Bartimaeus, a poor beggar, who knows, and believes in Jesus, and begs for healing, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” The disciples on the other hand try to silence him twice, when he calls upon Jesus to be healed. The point of the passage here is that the disciples too are blind. St. Mark places the restoration of sight to Bartimaeus by Jesus in this context. Mark also wishes to underline the dimension of faith in Jesus’ final words, “Go your way, your faith has saved you”. Only after regaining his sight was the blind man able to follow Jesus on the way to Jerusa-lem. We too like the disciples are sometimes spiritually blind to the demands of our calling, and commitment. Therefore, like Bartimaeus we need to beg the Lord to heal our blindness. The Lord is always there asking us the same question, “What do you want me to do for you?” If we are honest about our own blindness, the Lord will certainly heal us. Like the blind man, our prayer this coming week should be, “Master, I want to see”. If we wish to see Jesus, we have to draw closer, and ask him in faith to help us, that we may be able to see him clearly; that we may regain our lost vision, and purpose in our calling as Christians. When we re-ceive that new sight, we will be able, like Bartimaeus, to choose to turn from our old ways, and faithfully follow Jesus Christ, who is the way the truth, and the light. So this is the message we take from this Sunday readings: 1- God’s special attention, and love for those on the margins of society is first of all good news, and at the same time a challenge to all of us to be more open to serve; 2- The Gospel reading sets an example in the healing of Bartimaeus as a model for social ministry; 3- During this Year of Faith, we are challenged to care, and bring hope to those by the way side blind, waiting for someone to restore their sight, and vision in life; to recover their human dignity, and assume a normal life. Trigésimo Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario Año B Lecturas: Jeremías 31: 7-9; Hebreos 5: 1-6;

Marcos 10: 46-52

"Maestro, quiero ver." Este domingo celebramos la presencia de Cristo que abre nuestros ojos para ver las maravillas que Dios hace por nosotros en su Hijo Jesucristo. La primera lectura subraya la especial atención y el amor de Dios hacia los que están al margen de la sociedad. En esta lec-tura, el profeta Jeremías prevée la venida liberación de los israelitas de su exilio en Babilonia y proclama las buenas nuevas con gozo y alabanza al Señor que ha entregado a su pueblo. El pasaje es un himno de alabanza y alegría por lo que Dios está a punto de hacer por su pueblo. Las personas cantan en voz alta con alegría, mostrando un sinfín de ecos de acción de gracias a Dios que ha liberado a los débiles, a los co-jos, ciegos, a las mujeres con hijos. Estos fueron los que habían recibido la visión espiritual; los capacitados para conocer y entender la justicia del Señor que salva. Por eso, no es casual que Jeremías hable de que el Señor reunió desde los confines del mundo a los cojos, a los ciegos, a las mujeres con hijos, y a los debiles. Estas son personas que no solo están afligidas, sino que a menudo son ignoradas e incluso silenciadas en la sociedad. Esta profecía sirve como contexto para el pasaje del Evangelio de este Domingo. El pasaje del Evangelio trata sobre la curación del hombre ciego, Bar-timeo (hijo de Timeo). Jesús abandona Jericó, la parte final de su viaje a Jerusalén. Marcos usa esta historia para resaltar el fuerte contraste entre los discípulos que hasta ahora no lo han entendido, y Bartimeo, un pobre mendigo que conoce y cree en Jesús y suplica por sanidad: “Jesús, hijo de David, ten piedad de mí". Los discípulos, por otro lado, tratan de si-lenciarlo dos veces cuando llama a Jesús para que sea sanado. El punto del pasaje aquí es que los discípulos también son ciegos. San Marcos coloca la restauración de la vista a Bartimeo por Jesús en este contexto. Marcos también desea subrayar la dimensión de la fe en las palabras finales de Jesús: "Sigue tu camino, tu fe te ha salvado". Solo después de recuperar la vista, el ciego fue capaz de seguir a Jesús en el camino a Jerusalén. Nosotros también como los discípulos a veces somos ciegos espiritualmente a las demandas de nuestro llamado y compromiso. Por lo tanto, como Bartimeo, debemos rogar al Señor que cure nuestra ceguera. El Señor siempre está allí, haciéndonos la misma pregunta: “¿Qué quieres que haga por ti?” Si somos honestos acerca de nuestra propia ceguera, el Señor ciertamente nos sanará. Al igual que el ciego, nuestra oración de la próxima semana debe ser: "Maestro, quiero ver". Si deseamos ver a Jesús, tenemos que acercarnos y pedirle con fe que nos ayude, para poder verlo claramente; para que podamos recuperar nuestra visión y propósito perdidos en nuestro llamado como cristianos. Cuando recibamos esa nueva visión, podremos, como Bartimeo, elegir dejar nuestros viejos caminos y seguir fielmente a Jesucristo, que es el camino de la verdad y la luz. Entonces, este es el mensaje que podemos tomar de las lecturs de este Domingo: 1- La atención especial y el amor de Dios hacia quienes se encuentran en los márgenes de la sociedad son, ante todo, buenas no-ticias y, al mismo tiempo, un desafío para todos nosotros a ser más ab-iertos a servir; 2- La lectura del Evangelio establece un ejemplo en la cura-ción de Bartimeo como modelo para el ministerio social; 3- Durante este Año de la Fe, tenemos el desafío de cuidar y brindar esperanza a los que, por cierto, están ciegos, esperando que alguien les devuelva la vista y la visión en la vida; Para recuperar su dignidad humana y asumir una vida normal. Dios los bendiga. Amen.
