In the weeks following Easter we’ve been reading from the New Testament book, Acts of the Apostles. This book is our best historical source for what happened immediately following death and resurrection of Jesus. Acts especially focuses on the Apostles, Jesus’ closest followers whom he had elected to carry on his mission after he himself returned to the Father in heaven. Recently we’ve honored with special feasts the Apostle and Evangelist, St. Mark, as well as the Apostles, St. Philip and St. James. We know that Philip was one of the original Twelve and one of the first chosen by Jesus. He had been a disciple of John the Baptist but then was drawn into Jesus’ circle. At the miraculous feeding of 5,000 people, it was Philip who pointed out to Jesus that they only had a small amount of bread, insufficient for such a large crowd. Philip was also in the upper room when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. In the Gospel selected for his feast, Philip asks Jesus to show them the Heavenly Father. Jesus responds: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” It is from such remarks that we understand that Jesus is God himself, the human incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Regarding the other Apostle, St. James, who shares his feast day with St. Philip, there has always been some confusion. This is because there are two Apostles named James. The St. James we recently honored is often called James the Minor simply because he was younger than the other St. James. It was this St. James whose mother, also named Mary, was present with St. John and Jesus’ mother, Mary, at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday when Jesus died. The Gospels suggest that John was the Apostle of whom Jesus was fondest, and that the Apostle St. Jude Thaddeus was Jesus’ cousin. We also know that two sets of the Apostles were brothers. So there must have been a deep intimacy among all the Apostles and, after the Resurrection, a strong sense of the great mission that had been entrusted to them by our Lord. After the terrible betrayal of Judas Iscariot, the Apostles selected another, St. Matthias, to keep their number at twelve. Our honoring of the Twelve reminds us of the importance of what we call ‘Apostolic Succession’. What Jesus taught he passed on directly to his Apostles for all times, and they in turned passed on this eternal “deposit of faith” to others in a continued line to the present day. St. Paul says: “I handed on to you what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day; that he appeared to Peter, then to James, then to all the Apostles.” It is through this same Gospel, given to us by the Apostles, that we are saved, if we only believe and follow it in faith. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises
