LITURGY CORNERNew Year’s Day is the day of new beginnings.Millions of resolutions will be made and most ofthem will be broken before January is evenover! But there are many that will be kept. Thenew year is full of possibilities and mystery. It

can be frightening; it can be exciting; it can be life giving. Thekey to the New Year being any of these things rests withineach one of us. That’s right. You are the driver of your future. You make the choices about how your life is lived and it is yourchoices that will make the year 2017 a wonderful year, a goodyear, a mediocre year or a horrible year. Our fate is basically inour own hands. That is really one of the most wonderful giftsGod has given us - our free will. Our new beginnings aredetermined by how we choose to act. Along with celebratingthe New Year, we also celebrate The Solemnity of Mary, theMother of God. Mary the Mother of God is all about newbeginnings, just as New Year’s Day is about new beginnings.

She is the God-bearer. She gave birth to Jesus in our worldand thereby helped make all things new. You and I have thepower to be God-bearers too. We can give birth to Jesus in ourworld every day and thereby make all things new. So maybetogether we can make one more resolution, one that we canhelp each other keep all year long. Let us all resolve right nowto make this day of new beginnings the day we start givingbirth to Jesus in our world. Let’s resolve to be like Mary, theMother of God. Let’s resolve to be faithful, to speak out for allwho are oppressed and to be strong in our love for oneanother. If we make this resolution and if we help each otherremain faithful to it, then we will indeed be off to a good startfor the New Year of 2017!. We will be ready for great, newbeginnings and by keeping this resolution, we will be “God-bearers” all year long and that will make all things new again!May you and your family have a peaceful and joy-filled year ofnew beginnings! Lisa

FAITH AT HOMECatholics believe that Mary is the Mother of theman Jesus and our mother. She is also theMother of the Church and the humble woman

who said a big YES to God’s request to be the earthenvessel for Jesus. Adults: What does the mystery of thishuman baby, who is also the Word made flesh, the Lordof all creation say to me about the love of God for all ofus? Children: What can I do this year to be more likeGod in loving everyone, even those I don’t like verymuch? A Family Perspective: In today’s Gospel, we learnthat Mary honored her commitment to God by namingher child Jesus, the name given to Him by the angelGabriel. In Matthew’s Gospel, Joseph is told to name thechild Jesus - which means “God saves”. Even in His name,Jesus announces the mission He came to accomplish. Your family might use today’s feast as an opportunity totalk about names. Reflect together on the name ofeach member of the family. What does each namemean? Why was each person so named? Read togethertoday’s Gospel, Luke 2:16-21. Think about how Jesusfulfilled the mission that His name suggests. Pray as afamily that each family member will fulfill their mission tobe faithful followers of Jesus, in whom we find oursalvation. May you and your family have a blessed andhealthy New Year! Lisa
