PASTOR’S LETTER Dear Friends, A mother of one of our students, who went down to San Diego two weeks ago for a Youth Conference, described her son’s reaction to the weekend to that of the apostles who wit-nessed the transfiguration of Jesus. Like the apostles, her son wanted to stay in San Diego be-cause of what he had just experienced. Theologians call that a “mountain top experience” be-cause a person experiences Jesus in a totally different way and doesn’t want the experience to end. I hope all of us, at least once in our lives, have that “mountain top experience”. Father Rob, our missionary priest who spoke at all the Masses last weekend, collected over $5,600 for Papua New Guinea. I am blown away by your generosity! Not all of us are called to be missionaries, but all of us are called to support the missions. Thank you! Last Sunday, we published our first bilingual Sunday Bulletin. I hope you liked it. We have got-

ten a number of responses on how to improve our new English/Spanish format. One lady told me that she can learn a little more Spanish by having the translation side by side. I’m just so happy that now we have a Bulletin that can be read by the entire parish. The Spanish Community makes up about 1/3 of our OLL Community. A couple, with their 2 young children, were varnishing the 2 benches by the Guadalupe Shrine a couple of weeks ago. They did it without any fanfare and I don’t even know their names. What I do know is that people like this are the backbone of OLL: something needed to be done and they did it. Its people like these, and many others, who are the unsung heroes of OLL: these are people who work behind the scenes and never get thanked. Their thanks is the work they do. Last Monday, our school opened after a month long vacation. It was good to see the principal and some of the teacher’s back getting ready for the opening of the new school year. Hard to believe that school starts August 20th. Whatever happened to the summer of 2014? I have a Deanery Meeting with the other priests in Marin County on August 21st. The question we will be discussing is: “What does the Eucharist mean to your parish?” If you would like to answer that question, and I will share your answers with the other priests in the Deanery, please email me at: frbrian@ollnovato.org

PALABRAS DEL PASTOR Queridos amigos, La madre de uno de los jovenes que viajaron a San Diego hace dos semanas para unas conferencias, describió la reacción de su hijo a la experiencia de ese fin de semana comparandola a la experienia de los discipulos que presenciaron la Transfiguracion de Jesus. Como los Apostoles, el joven hubiera deseado quedarse en San Diego debido a esa gran experiencia. Los Teologos dicen que es una “experiencia en la cumbre de la montaña", porque porque la persona experimenta a Jesus de una manera totalmente diferente y quisiera que nunca terminara. Me gustaria que todos nosotros, al menos una vez en nuestras vidas tuvieramos esa “experiencia en la sima de la montana". El Padre Rob, el Sacerdote Misionero que hablo en las Misas el pasado fin de semana colecto $ 5,600 para su Mision en Nueva Guinea. Estoy muy sorprendido por su generosidad. No todos hemos sido llamados a ir a tierras de mission, pero todos hemos sido llamados a apoyar las Misiones. Gracias! El Domingo pasado, publicamos por primera vez el Boletin Dominican Bilingue. Espero que les guste. Varias personas nos han llamado con sugerencias para mejorar nuestro Boletin en Ingles y Espanol. Una senora comento que con el Boletin bilingue tendra la oportunidad de aprender un poco mas Espanol. Estoy realmente content de contat con un Boletin que pueda leer toda la parroquia la Comunidad Hispana representa una tercio de nuestra comunidad Parroquia de Nuestra Senora de Loreto.. Hace dos semans un matrimonio con sus dos pequenos ninos varnizaron las dos bancas cerca de la imagen de la Virgen de Guada-lupe. Lo hicieron sin anunciarlo y ni siquiera se sus nombres. Lo que si se es que personas como ellos son la Fortaleza de nuestra Comunidad. Vieron que habia algo que hacer y, simplemente . Pesonas, como ellos y muchos otros, son los heroes invisibles, gente que trabaja tras bambalinas, a los que nadie les da las gracias. Su premio esta en lo que hacen. El lunes pasado, nuestra Escuela abrió después de unas vacaciones de un mes. Fue un gusto ver a la director a y a algunos de los maestros preparandose para comenzar las clases, despues de un mes de vacacionesr. Es difícil creer que las clases comenzaran el 20 de agosto. ¿Qué pasó con el verano de 2014? Tengo una reunión del Decanato con los otros sacerdotes en Marin County el 21 de agosto. "La primera puerta consiste en orar a Jesús. Usted debe darse cuenta de que el estudio sin oración es inú l. Debemos orar a Jesús para llegar a conocerlo mejor. Los grandes teólogos hicieron su teología de rodillas. Ora a Jesús! A través del estudio y la oración obtenemos un poco más cerca ... Pero nunca conoceremos a Jesús sin orar. ¡Nunca! ¡Nunca! La segunda puerta consiste en celebrar a Jesús. La oración por sí sola no es suficiente, necesitamos la alegría de la fies-ta. Debemos celebrar a Jesús a través de sus sacramentos, porque estos nos dan la vida, nos dan fuerza, nos nutren, nos confortan, forjan una alianza con nosotros, que nos dan una misión. Sin la cele-bración de los Sacramentos, nunca vamos a llegar a conocer a Jesús. Esto es lo que la Iglesia ene que ver con: la celebración. La tercera puerta consiste en imitar a Jesús. Tomar el Evangelio, ¿qué hizo, cómo era su vida, ¿qué nos dicen, ¿qué nos enseñan y tratan de imi-tarlo. " "Introducción a través de estas tres puertas, significa entrar en el misterio de Jesús y es sólo así que podemos llegar a conocerlo y no debemos tener miedo de hacer esto.

Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Training

Interested in becoming a Lector or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion here at Our Lady of Loretto? New ministers are needed at all of our Masses. Please pray about whether you are called to one of these ministries. The Archdiocese is providing training for all Marin County parishes in September at St. Isabella’s in Terra Linda. The training sessions are: Saturday, September 20 – 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Saturday, September 27 – 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon Fee: $20 pre-registration and $25 for same-day registrants

Attendance both days is required to receive Certifica-tion from the Archdiocese. If you are interested please contact the Rectory office and advise them that you want to attend this training and which one of these ministries you wish to prepare for as the trainings run concurrently. Please make checks paya-ble to Our Lady of Loretto for the registration fee. Please note, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Current ministers of these ministries are also encouraged to attend these trainings and to receive Certification from the Archdiocese.

PRAYER

“The first door is praying to Jesus. You must realize that studying without prayers is no use. We must pray to Jesus to get to know him be er. The great theologians did their theology while kneeling. Pray to Jesus! By studying and praying we get a bit closer… But we’ll never know Jesus without praying. Never! Never! The second door is cele-bra ng Jesus. Prayer on its own is not enough, we need the joy of celebra on. We must celebrate Jesus through his Sacraments, be-cause these give us life, they give us strength, they nourish us, they comfort us, they forge an alliance with us, they give us a mission. Without celebra ng the Sacraments, we’ll never get to know Jesus. This is what the Church is all about: celebra on. The third door is imita ng Jesus. Take the Gospel, what did he do, how was his life, what did he tell us, what did he teach us and try to imitate him.” “Entering via these three doors, means entering into the mystery of Jesus and it’s only in this way that we can get to know him and we mustn’t be afraid to do this.

PRESENCE It is difficult to be truly present to another. We speak of putting in an appearance or showing up. Even when we arrive, we are often distracted. We think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We are most fully ourselves when we are absorbed in something worthy of us: creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these instances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside ourselves. Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one of God’s great prophets. In today’s first reading, he follows God’s command to journey to that most holy place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God. As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the presence of God after the storm at sea. They and the sea and the winds are stunned into silent reverence.

PRESENCIA Es difícil estar realmente presente ante otros. Hablamos de aparecernos o dar signo de presencia. Aun cuando estamos allí, estamos distraídos. pen-samos en lo que viene, o revisitamos un pasado no resuelto. Sin embargo, somos lo mejor que po-demos ser cuando estamos realmente presentes. Somos nuestro más completo ser cuando estamos absorbidos en algo digno de nosotros: trabajo crea-tivo, buena conversación, oración. En estas ocasiones somos totalmente nosotros mismos y totalmente fuera de nosotros. Elías conocía ese tipo de participación. Él era uno de los grandes profetas de Dios. En la pri-mera lectura, él sigue el mandamiento de Dios de ir a un sitio sagrado, el Monte Horeb. Y allí en gran silencio, el humilde Elías encontró a Dios. Y Pedro y los Apóstoles descubrieron la presencia de Dios después de la tormenta en el mar. Ellos, el mar y el viento se quedaron mudos en silencio reverente.
