"That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in Heaven, on earth and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:10-11

This Sunday brings the current liturgical year of the Church to an end. Throughout this entire year, through the observances of various feasts and seasons, the Church has helped us to come into better communion with our Lord. As we bring this year to a close, we do so with a celebration befitting the greatness of Jesus Christ and who, in fact, He is. The last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year is celebrated as the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Solemnity of Christ the King acknowledges that Jesus is the sovereign ruler of the universe and that we are all subject to Him. St. Paul tells us that “Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet, and the last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1 Cor 15, 25-26). Although the accusers of Jesus tried to present Him as a political king so that the Romans would find Him guilty of treason, which is punishable by death, Jesus’ sovereignty has nothing to do with politics. The Kingdom of Jesus has to do with righteousness and truth. In speaking to Pontius Pilate, Jesus said, “…the reason I came into this world is to testify to the truth. Anyone committed to the truth hears My voice” (Jn 18, 37). Therefore, at the close of this liturgical year, we honor Jesus Christ as our Sovereign King. He is truly our Lord and Ruler. His rule is that of love, and He calls each of us unto Himself because He is the way, the truth and the life. We are all part of His Kingdom, which will never end. To belong to His Kingdom takes nothing more than our desire and will to belong, and to be faithful to His commandments of love. In fact, everything that Jesus came to teach us can be contained in two commandments; love of God and neighbor. Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925 in his encyclical Quas Primas. This feast was to be observed in the Church throughout the world. Pope Pius XI connected the increasing denial of Christ as King to the rise of secularism throughout much of Europe. At the time of Quas Primas, many Christians (including Catholics) increasingly doubted Christ's authority and existence. Today, the same distrust and suspicion of authority exists. People balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be antiquated and sometimes even oppressive. Some even reject the titles of "lord" and "king" for Christ because they believe that such titles are borrowed from oppressive systems of government. Jesus Christ, however, is not an oppressive ruler. In fact, Christ's kingship is completely opposite. His reign is one of humility and service. Jesus said, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:42-45). All glory and honor to our Lord, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever and ever! Amen! The solemnity of Christ the King is also the patronal feast day of the Society of Christ of which Fr.Tom, Fr. Ted Winnicki (the pastor of St Joan of Arch) and myself are members. The Society of Christ was founded in 1932 by Pope Pius XII to serve the pastoral needs of Polish communities in various countries around the world. The priests and brothers of the Society of Christ, as well as our sister order, The Missionary Sisters of Christ the King, serve the pastoral needs of the Church in 23 countries on five continents of the world. Here in the United States we have 43 priests serving 27 parishes in 20 dioceses as well as an additional 11 priests serving 5 parishes in Canada. We ask for your prayers that we may continue in our mission of serving Christ our King. Fr. Gerry

“Living the Works of Mercy”

DECEMBER 2 & 3 Saturday & Sunday Masses

& DECEMBER 4 - 7 6:30pm - 8:30pm

In this parish mission, we will consider mercy in four ways: God, the source of mercy, God to us, we to others, and mercy to oneself. There are seven spiritual works of mercy - works that help our neighbor in his or her spiritual needs and seven corporal works of mercy - those that serve the bodily needs of others. These works of mercy will be considered in the presentations.

Presented by Rev. Max Oliva, S.J. All are welcome to as many evenings as you wish.
