Our Lady of Hope This Week

SIN SEPARATES US FROM GOD

In the same way that leprosy separated people from their communities until they were healed, sin separates us from God until we ask for forgiveness and healing. Let us have the faith of the leper in today’s Gospel, and believe in the healing words and touch of Jesus when it is our time to need for-giveness.

2017 FAITH Catholic-Publishing and Communications

LITURGY OF THE WORD

In the first reading, a man with a skin infection is deemed unclean and separated from the commu-nity. In Corinthians, Paul tells us to be imitators of Christ, and to do everything for the glory of God. In the Gospel, Jesus cures a leper, and then tells him not to speak of the healing to anyone.

2017 FAITH Catholic-Publishing and Communications

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In today’s second reading, St. Paul urges the Co-rinthians to “do all for the glory of God.” If we fol-low that advice in everything we do, we cannot help but be good stewards.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

This Wednesday, February 14, 2018 is Ash Wednesday and the first day of the Holy Season of Lent. Join with me in using the forty days as an opportunity to grow in grace, self awareness and undertake acts of charity and time in prayer. You should have received a Lenten Pamphlet describ-ing the various events and celebrations of the sea-son in your mailbox. Please take a moment to re-view the messages and Lenten Schedule. God bless you during this Holy Season.

THE LITURGY AND INFLUENZA

With the flu season upon us, we offer the following suggestions.

Holy Communion: Priests, Deacons and Eucharis-tic Ministers should be especially encouraged to wash their hands before Mass begins.

Communion from the Cup: The faithful should re-frain from drinking from the cup when one has a cold.

Greeting of Peace: The faithful should use good judgment and limit contact with others when sick.

Mass Attendance: If one is sick, there is no obliga-tion to attend Mass, personal prayer and reflection is encouraged.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Ash Wednesday is February 14. All students from Levels 6, 7 & 8 are expected to receive ashes. Ser-vices are 9am (Mass), 12:15pm, 3:30pm, and 7:00pm.

Religious Education office is closed for President’s Week Monday, February 19 through Sunday, Feb-ruary 25. Classes resume Monday, February 26. Wishing you a safe and healthy vacation.

VIRTUS TRAINING-PROTECT OUR CHILDREN!

Virtus is a program that gives us a specific plan in identifying and preventing child sexual abuse. The training is required of all diocesan personnel and vol-unteers in all parishes.

If you are a volunteer and still need to fulfill this obli-gation check the Long Island Catholic or the Diocesan website, www.drvc.org for training sessions available in the area. Please register for the class online or stop in the Church office.

The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People maintains a confidential phone line: 516 594-9063. We are available to help you or anyone who has been abused or victimized by someone representing the Catholic Church. All calls are responded to within 24 hours.

ALTAR BREAD, ROSE FOR LIFE & SANCTUARY CANDLE

If you wish to donate the bread and wine for the week’s Sunday and daily Eucharist celebrations, the offering is $50. Opportunities to donate a Rose for Life are also available. The offering is $5 per week. The sanctuary candle is available for memorialization. The offering is $15.

KING KULLEN RECEIPTS

Please save your register tapes from King Kullen in Garden City Park. 1% of your purchases are donated to the parish. Proceeds from register receipts are for-warded to various charities through the St. Vincent de Paul Conference of Our Lady of Hope.

LENT BEGINS

Ash Wednesday, February 14, marks the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent. Ashes will be distributed that day at Mass at 9am and at services at 12:15pm, 3:30pm and 7pm. Please join us on Fridays during Lent for the Stations of the Cross at 7:30pm.

May the upcoming holy season offer you an oppor-tunity for prayer, reflection and growth in God’s grace. Some have inquired about the practice of fast and abstinence:

Fasting obliges all Catholics (from ages 18 to 59 in-clusive) to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On the fast days, we may take one full meal, two smaller meals and no snacking in between meals. Abstinence obliges all Catholics (14 years and older) to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday AND all other Fridays of Lent.

ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered to adult Catholics who have never been confirmed, on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018. Ten sessions which will prepare candidates for reception of the sacrament will take place on Tuesday evenings (7-8pm). If you are interested, know someone who is or have any questions regarding Adult Confirmation, please con-tact Ray Henderson at 334-6288 ext. 19.

THE CHURCH IN NEED

On February 18 a collection will be taken for The Church in Need. The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is particular need for help:

Church in Central and Eastern Europe-the Collec-tion provides support for basic pastoral programs and makes scholarships available for students studying to serve their local church. These students become vital participants in the renewal of the Church in the re-gion.

The Church in Latin America faces many difficult challenges. Natural disasters in many areas caused lasting damage to the Church, while a significant loss of parishioners to migration and to other faiths, the inability to support itself financially, and a lack of priests and religious to help effectively minister to the large number of Catholics continue to trouble the re-gion.

The Church in Africa-the funds will go to assisting African countries where poverty, sickness and politi-cal strife prevent people from living in dignity.

BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASS

The class for Baptism will be held every other month on the last Sunday of the month at 11am in the lower church. The next class scheduled is March 18.
