6 Home of Peace, Love, and Welcome. August 18, 2019

Beloved, the Mystery of the Cross, the cost of discipleship, is central in today’s readings. The Second Reading (Heb 12:1-4) presents JESUS AS

OUR ULTIMATE MODEL: “Persevere in running the race that lies before us… keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.” Wow! Great words of encouragement! Hence, it adds, “In your struggle against sin you have not

yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.” Wow! What an expectation of the level of commitment we should have! Nothing short of the willingness to die for the faith. How passionate are you about your faith and about Gospel values? Hear the words of Jesus in the Gospel Passage (Luke 12:49-53): “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!” Wow! That is passion! That is zeal! Today, our culture increasingly rejects the Word of God, instead of yielding and trusting in God’s mercy (cf. Rom 7:14-25). WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Simply “get-along” at the expense of the Gospel? Jesus says, “NO!”: “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three….” Surely, Jesus didn’t come to wreck families and healthy associations or to polarize our society; rather He came to set us on fire with love of God and His Church. So, we can’t help it if some of our family, friends and neighbors don’t feel the same way. They shouldn’t pull us back. We can get along with everyone: non-believers, Buddhists, Islamists, and others but never at the expense of the Gospel. The First Reading (Jer 38:4-6, 8-10) shows Prophet Jeremiah was persecuted for preaching the truth. What did it serve? Perhaps, if they had repented, God would have spared them (cf. Jonah 3:4-10). Stand your ground! BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Rev 2:10).

No deberían hacernos retroceder.

Filling out a Census Card not only shows you belong, but may be necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, participating in religious education programs and getting donation statements for tax purposes. Queremos saber quién eres.

Reflection on the Sunday Readings By Fr. Eamon Tobin Jesus, we are gathered in your name to share life and to share our reflections on your Word. May your Holy Spirit purify our minds and hearts of anything that will hinder us from hearing the

message you want us to hear. Amen. The first and third readings speak about the prophet’s pain when he and his word are rejected. In the second reading, the author seeks to offer a word of encouragement to people who are tempt-ed to lose faith.

LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to perse-cute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Tes-tament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to under-stand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen.
