The school year in the Diocese of Solola in Guatemala begins the end of January and ends the end of October.
The Guatemala Mission Committee from Our Lady of Fatima parish helps the Mayan people with education programs in this diocese. There are two preschools that we provide supplies and materials (desks, chalkboards, carpet) for. Our first school, in Old Ixtahuacan, continues to do well. The children are four and five year olds. The children come to school speaking Quiche and must learn Spanish to continue their education. Our newer preschool is in Maria del Carmen. Natalia DeLeon, who lives in Guatemala City, administers our programs for us. We support 25 Mayan girls at a high school, Our Lady of Help, in San Andres Semetabaj. This is a boarding school. The girls are taught by the Bethlehemite sisters whose mother house is in Columbia. The sisters do an excellent job providing education and faith for these young women. We also help the youth group in the parish of Santa Catarina in Old Ixtahuacan. We have helped pay for re-treats and field trips. We have bought guitars, drums, a keyboard and hymnals for the choir. Our committee meets once a month, September-May, in the Gathering Place on Sunday afternoons. Please check the bulletin for the dates. If you are interested in learning about another culture, please join us. Thank you for your continuing support.

Dear Parishioners
I hope you have enjoyed many fun filled summer days with family and friends. As the new finance council chairperson it is my responsibility to share with you the activities of the fi-nance council.
In June we concluded our previous fiscal year 2008/2009. As you can see in the Actual vs. Budget snapshot we missed our mark considerably. We fell substantially short of our pro-jected income. Father Ty and staff were able to offset part of our shortfall by holding ex-penses below budget and yet we still ended the year with a significant loss. Essentially what this means is that programs we deem necessary within the church were under funded and reserves were tapped into. Most likely income was down from the previous year due to the downturn in the economy.
We are very thankful for the contributions made by our outgoing Chairman, John Riley and Council Member Judy Blewett. We have elected two new members, Fred Schunter and Joanne McCann, and we are grateful to utilize their expertise in this capacity.
We have finalized our current fiscal year budget which will be published in the next news-letter. We have our work cut out for us. Reserves are low and expenses are cut to the mini-mum. The finance council will be busy working on solutions to raise income approximately 7% above last year’s income which equates to about $35,000. Ideas are welcome!!!
I look forward to representing Our Lady of Fatima as the Finance Council Chairperson. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact one of us.
Sincerely,
Susan Denny Chair

Welcome back to a new school year. This is a time of transition for many of our students, 6th grade students
moving into our Junior High Ministry, 8th graders moving into Senior High. Our young people will be chang-
ing in many ways over the next few years and I invite them to be part of the wonderful ministry and commu-
nity that gathers in the Junior High and Senior High Youth Groups.
This past summer was a little quiet for our ministry. The closure of Los Embajadores (our Mexico mission
program), due to the drug violence in Mexico, has left a large hole in our social justice element of our minis-
try. It was unfortunate that this came late in the spring as we were unable to adjust and look for a new pro-
gram to fill this gap. We are researching other Catholic programs to see what we might participate in next
year.
We have been affected by the economy as the cost of many of the activities that we have done in the past had
to be put on hold. Let us pray that our economy begins to recover and for all our families that have been af-
fected.
The fall schedule is being developed and will be in the bulletin in
September.
Garden Update: Garden Update: Garden Update: Garden Update: The Garden project continues to take shape and develop. This fall you will see the addition
of an entryway to the gardens. This will be the Eagle Scout project of Ryan Senger. Additionally, an amphi-
theater seating area will be constructed by Alex Stubbers for his Eagle Scout project. Both of these projects
will help anchor the development of the property. Landscape architect Mike Peplinski will be helping us with
the master plan for the property. Rich Peplinski is donating his time and construction equipment for both
projects. We are very thankful for their input and guidance.
We have a number of things growing in the gardens this year and there will be a full update in the bulletin in
September with everything that we had in the gardens.

We are rapidly approaching the “end of summer.” At least it seems that way to me. There hasn't been near enough time to do things and go the places summertime offers. My lead time for preparing for the Fall and Winter music session has been cut short by two weeks. My brother in Chico, CA has asked me to help with his almond nut harvest and that starts around the 15th of August. A nut farmer? I guess. Seems he shot him-self in the foot and is on crutches and needs me to give him a hand - or is it a foot - with the harvest. He has 6300 trees on 100 acres. It will be a hot and dusty harvest. That's brotherly love!
My time frame more than likely doesn't match up to those stalwart choir folks. They are still enjoying sum-mer activities with no thought of beginning choir again. The initial rehearsal will happen the first Monday after Labor Day. We will sing the 19th and 20th of September. The late start will create a time crunch for Advent and Christmas. Not to worry. Why?
The budget set for this year and approved by the Finance Council is $475,000. Last year’s income was at $441,000. That short fall makes it necessary to go into our library and utilize the music we already have. I've been doing just that and I think we will have more than enough to work with. I've pulled music we have done in the past and some which we never got to sing but rehearsed. Then there are some golden oldies from previous directors we've not done. All in all, another challenging and enjoyable musical and prayerful year.
I welcome back the heroic band of musicians that have staffed both our Saturday night ensemble and the Sunday morning choir. Their dedication is Homeric! That shouldn't prevent any newcomers from consid-ering joining their ranks. We still have space in the choir pews for more singers of all voices - male and female alike!
So come join us after Labor Day and contribute to the prayer life of your parish with raised voices. Let us Sing unto the Lord!

The purpose of the Social Ministry Commission at Our Lady of Fatima is to provide financial assis-tance to organizations practicing love of neighbor, neighborhood and city.
Catholic Charities will be starting a new program, Emergency Assistance.
“It comes about after reflection on three factors: 1) the decrease in social service agencies offering emergency financial resources to the general public, 2) the economic downturn and resulting increase in needs, and 3) the cost to parish offices in terms of time and en-ergy to provide help and the cost to the poor in having to knock on many different doors in the search of aid. This would decrease the parish workload by passing on the calls re-ceived by the parish to the Emergency Assistance Coordinator at Catholic Charities.
The only thing missing from this equation are assistance funds and clients. We propose that the Spokane parishes may want to provide both clients and funds and we will then manage the case load. We pledge to be responsible stewards of donated funds, reporting back to your parish the ways in which we spend the parish contributions.”
This is a very good way to assist those in need in our community. A donation will be made when the program begins.
At the October meeting, discussion will be focused on where the remainder of the funds should go. Keeping some of the funds in the parish to assist where needed, as in paying on 3 months of winter heating bills in the church? Expand what is done with the tree of sharing?
Watch the bulletin for the date and time of the October meeting. All are welcome to come.
Dear Lord, bless us with a spirit of understanding and compassion, with deeper faith, generous justice and charity for all.

The Knights of ColumbusThe Knights of ColumbusThe Knights of ColumbusThe Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by a 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, in the basement of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Today, more than a century later, the Knights of Columbus has become the largest lay organization in the Catholic Church.
Knights of Columbus are Catholic men, 18 years of age and older, striving to live the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism, and defense of the priesthood. The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is dedicated in its loyalty to the Pope. It is firmly focused on the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. It was on these bedrock values that the Order was founded over a century ago and remains true to them today.
Our Lady of Fatima Parish Council would welcome an opportunity to answer any questions you may have about membership in the Knights of Columbus. Here you will find brother Knights working to fulfill the central mission of the Order: striving in charitable works; serving the Church and unified in following its teachings; supporting brother Knights in their temporal and spiritual needs; and acting for the good of their country. This is Father McGivney's dream, echoing across the century, and living today in the hearts of his brothers and those they touch.

One of the principles of good liturgy is that liturgy depends on exceedingly simple things done well. Another critical principle is that the simple things we do at the liturgy we do together, not as isolated individuals praying and moving and speaking as we might prefer, but as the Church, the people of God, prefers. Liturgy is the time for com-munal prayer, requiring a certain discipline to set our personal prayers and pieties aside for an hour, in order to join the people of God in its universal prayer – the greatest prayer that we could possibly offer, and the prayer that makes us to be a Church.

The new school year has started for All Saints students & staff, and we would like welcome all of our new families to our community - both those with children in our school and everyone who has joined Our Lady of Fatima Parish in the last few months. Throughout the coming year, All Saints School will hold various community events along with special ceremonies that you are invited to attend. One of these is our school auction held on Friday, November 7th. It’s a great way to sup-port the school while you bid on some fabulous buys. Look in the weekly bulletin for more information on school Masses, plays and spe-cial events or call us at 534-1098 ex. 215. Thank you for all you do for your Catholic School!

“The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is designed for adults who, after hearing the
mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seeks the Living God and enters the way of faith and conversion as
the Holy Spirit opens their hearts.” [RCIA #1]
The RCIA process will begin on Sunday, September 13, at 9:00 am in the Conference Room of the Administration Building. The meetings are informal and the discussions are lectionary based. Meetings are open to all who are interested in inquiring about the Catholic Church and/or wish to join the Church. If you are interested or know someone who is, please call the Parish Office at 747-7213.
