STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 6 / REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 6 DE SEPTIEMBREToday’s Gospel from Mark includes an extraordinary occasion when Jesus cured and healed a man who had been unable to hear or speak. In the process of healing him the Lord said one word — Ephphatha, a word that means “Be opened.” In a homily given in the fall of 2012, Pope Benedict XVI stated: “At the heart of today’s Gospel there is a small but very important word, a word that in its deepest meaning sums up the whole message and the whole work of Christ. It is the Aramaic Ephphatha.”

The Holy Father went on to point out that many are inwardly deaf to the world around them and remain mute at a time when the world is in need of spiritual guidance. The Pope’s meditation on that Gospel and that one important word also included a reminder that the Lord speaks to each of us in a language of love, and calls us to be baptized disciples.

The man in the Gospel had been isolated and insulated from the world around him. We may tend to be that way at times also. Jesus calls us to see our vocation in human society, and to strive to be good stewards of that vo-cation. In closing his homily that day, Pope Benedict prompted us what our response should be: “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3: 10) Read more at www.thecatholicsteward.com.

ON HUMAN WORK

What does the Catholic Church think about human labor, wages, unions and other related topics? In 1891 Pope Leo XIII wrote an encycli-cal called “The Condition of Labor” (Rerum Novarum). This document was a reaction to the terrible exploitation and poverty of European and North American workers at the end of the nineteenth century. In this encyclical Pope Leo XIII examines the situation of the poor people and workers in industrialized countries. He states several important principles that should guide the response to these people. He then articulates the role of the Church, workers, and employers, and the law and public authorities in

working together to build a just society. Employ-ers are given the major role as agents of change.

In 1981 Pope John Paul II wrote an encyclical called “On Human Work” (Laborem Exercens) where he affirms the teachings of Pope Leo XIII. He also wrote about the elements of a spirituality of work: 1. Humans share in the activity of their God (#25). 2. Work imitates God’s activity and gives dignity (#25). 3. Jesus was a person of work (#26). 4. There are many references to work in the Bible (#26). 5. Vatican II: work allows people to fulfill their total vocation (#26). 6. Work is sharing in the Cross and Resurrection (#27). 7. Work is necessary for earthly progress and the development of the Kingdom (#27). If you want more information, I encourage you to read these documents. Happy Labor Day!

Are we astonished?

Something very profound must have happened between Jesus and the deaf man beginning with the moment Jesus removed him from the crowd to the moment he was cured. It was a very personal encounter where the deaf man came to know Jesus as the manifestation of God’s presence among us. Only then could he and the crowd proclaim who Jesus was. As disciples, we, too, must come to know Jesus before we can truly proclaim who he is. We, too, ought to be “astonished” by the many manifestations of God’s Presence in and through the people around us today. We ought be to so aware of Christ’s Presence that we, too, cannot contain ourselves in proclaiming the Good News.

1. When have you experienced Jesus’ compassion and healing presence?

2. When have you been able to “speak plainly” about who Jesus is in your life? When have you been “tongue-tied?”

Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Is 35:4-7; Jas 2:1-5; Mk 7:31-37] http://usccb.org/bible/readings/090615.cfm

¿Estamos asombrados?

¿Cuándo has estado “lengua-atada?”
