Experience the Healing of God's Mercy: A Day of Reflection, Prayer and Divine Love on

Saturday January 19, 2019 from 9:00 am-4:00 pm

People hurt us through what they say or do, or what they fail to say or do. Sometimes we forgive. Sometimes we struggle to forgive. At times, we are left hurt and deeply wounded. This day will offer an opportunity to gain under-standing of God's mercy for us and how we can imitate God in sharing mercy with those who have hurt us. The day will include brief talks, prayer, opportuni-ties for quiet reflection and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Lord wants to help you experience forgiveness and mercy...Join us! Presenter: Fr. Chris Walsh, Pastor of St. Raymond Church in Northwest Philadelphia, trained in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, has preached retreats and days of recollection across the country. He rejoices daily in God's merciful and patient love and hopes to share this love with all who gather for this day. Fee: $40 (includes coffee and pastry upon arrival and Noon lunch.) Please register with a $15 deposit by January 10th. Please call 267-350-1830 or 267-350-1831 or email: [email protected] with any questions.

FATHER ROSSI Today, Sunday, December 30, his last day of service to us, Father Rossi will celebrate at the 8:00am and 11:00am Masses. We would like to honor his six years of ministry among us and bid him farewell with a brunch after the 8:00am Mass in the Church Hall and a wine & cheese gathering after the 11:00am Mass at the Parish Center. All parishioners are welcome to either or both Masses to thank Father for his priestly service to us, as well as the wit and wisdom with which he has proclaimed the Gospel among us.

December 30,2018-Feast of the Holy Family Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson “There is a charm in making a stew, to the unaccustomed cook, from the excitement of wondering what the result will be, and whether any flavor save that of onions will survive the competition in the mixture.” So wrote Annie Besant, the Brit-ish philosopher, socialist writer and activist who died in 1933. For her, it was certainly a down to earth topic. Recently I took on the challenge of cooking up a good beef stew of my own with the help of a good online recipe and a long-shelved slow cooker. I must say that the aroma from the kitchen lasted most of the day and did its part assisting the furnace in providing an overall warmth on a gray and drizzly day. By now you are probably wondering what all this talking about stew has to do with talking about today’s feast of the Holy Family. To begin, just as a hearty stew brings together a mix of vegetables, so our families gather together a group of differing personalities with their gifts and quirks, to blend into a contribution that graces our whole human society. St. Paul, in his Letter to the Colossians read today makes another kind of “stew” by naming the gifts that blend together and make Christian family life possible. It is good for us to pay attention to his ideas, as this beautiful feast occurs amid the celebration of Christmas. Like no other time of year, this season brings the family together, often enough these days from far flung places, to rekindle relationships or perhaps heal them, and then to place knees under the one table for meals. There are enough somewhat nasty jokes and cynical comments out there avowing that all families are in some way dys-functional. Yes, and most of us laugh as we view the Chevy Chase classic Christmas movie about the messy holiday happenings with the Griswold’s. We may feel an unspoken relief that as crazy as our own extended family may be, we’re not that bad by comparison. Our Church would rather ask us today to look at the very special model we call the Holy Family. This is not that we are to be frustrated by their perfection as much as we can be inspired by their virtues. Above all this stands the marvelous truth that when God Himself came from His heaven to our earth for a life-saving visit, He did it as member of a family. When He preached His revelatory message, it was to tell us that we have a loving Father who wants us to be united as a family. At the end of His life, while hanging ignominiously on a cross, He capped off His mission by giving us all a perfect spiritual Mother to complement our earthly one. Asking if family life is threatened today is something like asking if the sky is blue. There are a host of sociological pa-thologies to blame for this. No doubt, technology has a share in the blame game, if you just consider how even our cell phones ring for attention at some family dining tables, not to omit what sometimes happens at the Eucharistic Meal it-self. In terms of priorities, the old adage of “Family first” is still valid. In terms of holiness and expertise in responding to God’s love, the real “First Family” for us is that of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is so important to note that their holiness was not some dreary parody of the same, featuring folded hands and lowered eyelids. Rather it was based on humility and unwavering obedience despite very real challenges such as a lost boy and His strange explanation. So this is a meaningful feast, placed right where it should be on the Church calendar. Coming at the end of the old year and right before the new one, it offers all of us the opportunity to amend our past faults and resolve to change in the fu-ture. That may be the best way to part as everybody heads for their planes, trains, or automobiles without being (dare I say it?) “in a stew.” First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Authentic religion involves responsibilities to others, especially one’s parents. Honoring one’s father and mother brings a person long life, forgiveness of sins and other blessings. Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul urges his readers to adopt a type of “laundry list” of virtues which certainly apply to family members. The applications of them guarantees the peace of Christ will “control our hearts.” Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 Here Jesus is to be seen as the personification of a new Israel in His escape from Egypt via Joseph and Mary. Outstanding throughout the narrative is Joseph’s trusting obedience to God.
