Dear Friends: Greetings and welcome! My thanks for your continued support to our “Special Projects” collection. I am grateful to all who have contributed to the work that is soon to be done. I am sure you are wondering why the work has not been completed. Well, you will have to ask the Archdiocese. They are holding up the project due to some legal terminology in the contract. Please pray that it will be completed soon. Thank you! We have begun our plans for the annual drawing and Spaghetti Dinner. The drawing and dinner will be held on March 30. Please mark your calendars. Also, if anyone is celebrating a significant anniversary, please call the rectory. We will honor our anniversary couples at the Vigil Mass on March 30. This weekend, our 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time, our Gospel, St. Luke, gives us the account of the call of the first Apostles, Peter, his brother Andrew and James and John. The call of St. Peter certainly stands out among all the Apostles. We see in the Gospel, they were all fishermen. A popular talent at the time of Jesus and obviously one that attracted Jesus in His call to these men. Now as He tells them they will be fishing for Him – calling and attracting others to follow His Way. The sign given, the catch of so many fish is the promise of their future success and the many they will bring to Jesus and the message of the Gospel. This is one of my favorite Gospels. The command Jesus gives: “Put out into the deep!” is certainly one we need to hear as we bring others to know, share, believe in the Gospel message. “In the sight of the angels, I will sing Your praise Lord!” God bless you! Thanks for being here and celebrating, have a good week! Fr. Janton…

TODAYS READINGS: First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Gospel: Luke 5:1-11 What in the world does she see in him? We ask incredulously when the object of a friend’s interest seems unworthy. One may ask the same of God regarding the imperfect people who become prophets or disciples. Why would God choose Isaiah, a man who admits to being unclean, and worse, doomed, for such was the fate of those who had seen God? Why would Jesus choose Peter, impetuous, stubborn Peter, who admits to being a sinful man, foreshadowing his eventual denial of Jesus? Yet God chooses both and each end up playing major roles in the history of the church. So too does Paul, who calls himself unworthy because he had persecuted Christians prior to his conversion. All three have an unexpected encounter with the Lord. We hear of two today. Both Isaiah and Peter receive a sign and an invitation. A seraph symbolically burns away the sin from Isaiah’s lips. Peter’s net, empty all night, fills with fish. Though unsure of their worthiness, each accepts the call. Paul recognizes how this can happen, for it happened to him. It is not their own virtue but the grace of God that made them worthy. And so they respond, “Here I am,” and “left everything and followed” (Isaiah 6:8, Luke 5:11). How is God calling you? Can you recognize God’s grace?

DEACONS CORNER

The recent news of the passing of an abortion bill in New York state and its support by Governor Cuomo has resulted in anger, disappointment and serious concern among many Catholics. The Reproductive Health Act removed abortion from New York’s criminal code and now permits abortions with very few restrictions at any week of a pregnancy. Cuomo, a Catholic, drew the ire of his fellow Catholics in New York and across the country for his advocacy against church teaching on the issue. Some petitioned Cardinal Dolan to excommunicate

Cuomo. What is the Church’s teachings on this subject? Excommunication is a severe ecclesiastical penalty resulting from grave crimes against the Catholic religion. Canon Law specifies that an excommunicated person is forbidden to participate

in a ministerial capacity (celebrant, lector, etc.), in the Sacrifice of the Mass or in any other form of public worship; to celebrate or to receive the sacraments. In the situation surrounding abortions, Canon Law #1398 states that “a person who procures a completed abortion incurs an automatic excommunication.” Where the subject is much less clear is when it brings into question policy-makers and legislators. The response from the Cardinal’s office suggested that “under canon law, excommunication is not an appropriate response to a politician who supports or votes for legislation advancing abortion.” The overwhelming view from a strict interpretation of Canon Law is that the penalty of excommunication does not apply to legislators. We must keep in mind that the purpose of excommunication is to bring the sinner into repentance and conversion. Excommunication does not “lock the door” of the Church to the person forever, but hopes to bring the person back into communion with the whole Church. This also applies in the case of abortions as the Catechism states, “The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society” (#2272). If you have a question about your faith or on Church teachings, please submit your question to Deacon John Nucero at [email protected]. Thank you.
