BIT BY BIT WE STARTED INCORPORATING SIMULATION

INTO OUR CURRICULUMAMELIA DENNIS TOOK THE LEAD IN WRITING FOR A GRANT… THE GRANT ALLOWED US TO PURCHASE VIDEO EQUIPMENT WE COULD USE TO RECORD STUDENTS DURING SIMULATIONS.

• Video recording promotes self awareness and critical

thinking, which will improve patient care.

• It can be used during the debriefing process, which occurs after a simulation, to show and discuss with students the care they provided for their patient.

• This is where a high percentage of the learning actually takes place.

Now our students could not only insert tubes and catheters, but they could hear heart sounds, lung sounds and bowel sounds, as well as take a B.P., pulse and RR.

DURING THE SIMULATIONS THE INSTRUCTORS AND SIMULATION TECHS ADJUST THE PATIENT’S COURSE BASED ON THE STUDENT’S INTERVENTIONS. THE INSTRUCTOR TALKS THROUGH A MICROPHONE, WHICH THE STUDENTS CAN HEAR AS THE PATIENT’S VOICES .

AFTER THE SIMULATION IS COMPLETED, THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY SIT DOWN AND HAVE A DEBRIEFING SESSION. DURING THE DEBRIEFING SESSION THE STUDENTS ARE ASKED WHAT THEY THINK THEY DID WELL, WHAT THEY THINK THEY COULD HAVE DONE BETTER, AND WHAT THEY LEARNED DURING THE SIMULATION. DURING THE SIMULATION, THE STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY GIVE HOLISTIC CARE IN A SAFE NON-THREATENING ENVIRONMENT. THE GOAL IS TO LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES MADE HERE AND PREVENT THEM FROM OCCURRING IN THE CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT WHERE SOMEONE COULD BE HARMED……
