Dear Members,

I hope each of you had a wonderful Holiday Season. It was another good one for us here at SLOCC with lots of Holiday parties and full attendance at our Formal Holiday and New Year’s Eve parties.

Both the golf course staff and clubhouse staff have been preparing for the expected El Niño rains. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for lots of rain and little damage! If the winter rains keep you off the course or courts, it might be a great time to discover the fitness center if you haven’t already. Darren Howey Darren Howey Darren Howey Darren Howey and his staff would be delighted to help you put together a plan for 2016 that will move you toward your goals regardless of your current fitness level. 2015 saw our golf memberships join the ranks of tennis and fitness with a wait list to get into SLOCC. It is every Clubs goal to craft its membership, amenities and programing in such a way that it creates demand. The Board, Membership Committee and staff will continue to fine tune this with the goal of exceeding our members expectations and keeping up the demand to join. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our 2015 Board Members for their service and support. Two in particular; Tom Sherman Tom Sherman Tom Sherman Tom Sherman and David Cole David Cole David Cole David Cole who are no longer on the Board but deserve our heartfelt thanks! David served as President and Tom served multiple years as Treasurer. Both were instrumental in achieving much of what we currently enjoy at SLOCC. Thank you for all you’ve done. The attached chart shows our new Board Members and officers as well as committee chairs. If you would like to serve on a committee or just learn more about it, please let me know, I am happy to explain the duties of each committee and the time commitment. As many of you know our Food & Beverage Manager, John MundellJohn MundellJohn MundellJohn Mundell, is leaving us in early January. John has taken a new position in Monterey and we wish him nothing but the best and thank him for his service these past six years.

New Year’s Day marks my 7th anniversary at SLOCC and I am astounded how fast that time has passed. It’s fun to look back and see all that has been accomplished, but even more enjoyable to look forward and think about what we can do in the future. I’m honored to be part of SLOCC’s journey and look forward to a great 2016!

Sincerely,

Mike Stanton General Manager/ COO

The golf shop looks forward to the new year with the continuation of a couple of programs we started last year. The PGA Junior League PGA Junior League PGA Junior League PGA Junior League has caught on nat iona l ly as a cornerstone of most clubs junior program. The league is for children, both girls and boys, between the ages of 9 1 13 and consists of twelve kids. The beauty of the league is your child does not need prior experience to play. The kids play a scramble format over nine holes in three different three hole matches. The league consists of a six match schedule starting in mid June and going until late July. Our Club had a team last year with a full twelve kids and played one match and had one practice per week. The kids had a blast! Look for our sign ups to start the first part of May.

We also started a modest caddie caddie caddie caddie program program program program in June, July, and August. We are affiliated with the Evans Scholars Program which gives out numerous college scholarships to kids who fulfill the caddie requirements at their Club. We pulled kids from the local High School golf teams and had them available by request to caddie. The Club had a total of twenty caddies of which a total twelve caddied over the summer. A couple of them actually caddied over twenty times! The members were quite responsive and enjoyed the pleasure of having a caddie, but more so of helping a young person grow in the game of golf. Look for this program to start in mid May for weekends and mid June for the full week.

The new year also officially starts the ban by the ban by the ban by the ban by the USGA on anchoring your putterUSGA on anchoring your putterUSGA on anchoring your putterUSGA on anchoring your putter. This ban prevents the player from anchoring any part of the putter against your body to create an crutch for your stroke. This method had become popular with a long putter for those players looking for a little stability in their stroke, especially as they got older. If you have any questions, the golf shop would be happy to explain, by knowledge or research, what is still legal. The USGA also banned this year the ability for a person to post a g o l f r o u n d f o r handicapping purposes played by themselves. It seems logical that the governing body would want some peer revue to legitimize a posted round. As with the anchor ban, I feel this is a three putt maybe even a four putt by the USGA. The game of golf is built on personal integrity and offers many chances to cheat if you choose to play this way. There are many players, both men or women, who play after work or late on weekends who don't always have time to play in a group. Posting a score keeps them connected to the game. Unfortunately, it's a rule and we will have to enforce it.

Many of you know member Bernie KurtzBernie KurtzBernie KurtzBernie Kurtz. She’s an avid golfer at the Club and a breath of fresh air to all those that are fortunate to cross her path. I was born and raised in a large family of 8 children in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1974, after graduating from college from Ohio University, I married my husband Ed that summer, said goodbye to my family and left for Southern California. We celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary in September. Although I have always been active, playing intramural sports and being the fourth player with my three brothers so we could play touch football or hockey. I didn’t start any real exercise program until, as a young working mother with two children, I was forced to do something to relieve stress, which was causing my body to react negatively, both mentally and physically. It was suggested to me, that I try running, which when I first heard of it seemed CRAZY, since as a preteen, I couldn’t even run a mile to pass President Kennedy’s Physical Fitness Test that we had to take. I soon found that running brought me peace and happiness. If I missed too many days, my body would react right away and let me know to get back to it. Sadly, my fear of “turning into my mother” was my incentive to stay healthy. She was a beautiful woman and a great mother before she lost control of her bodyweight and her health. What activities do you most enjoy? What activities do you most enjoy? What activities do you most enjoy? What activities do you most enjoy? I love bike riding, (my husband and I have been on four different bike tours in Europe), and running for physical activity. I also love golfing, creating art and decorating. I love to play games with my family, and I love bonding with my grandchildren. I’ve learned to like weight training, but I still don’t love it while I’m doing it, I just love how it feels when I am finished. I like what it does for my energy level and my feeling of well-being. How do you stay motivated in your fitness routine? How do you stay motivated in your fitness routine? How do you stay motivated in your fitness routine? How do you stay motivated in your fitness routine? My motivation is just wanting to wake up the next day so that I can feel life to its fullest. My motivation is purely and simply that my body and psyche go off kilter if I don’t exercise. It’s funny, but I never viewed myself as that kind of person, until I got the same feedback from others. I think it comes from growing up in that big family. You had to have some backbone to survive the family teasing, and the will to fight to succeed in family competitions. If you didn’t stand up for yourself, you would become lost in the shuffle. I also learned that if you don’t at least “try” to do something you have never done before, you won’t know if you love it or hate it. If it turns out that you love it—look what you may have missed for not trying. I’m not one to talk about goals. It’s kind of a running joke between my husband and I. He is a highly successful business man. A type A personality, who has made goals his whole life. I’m the opposite, I hate the word goal, it means planning, and I am more of a, “carefree, fly without restraints and see where I land”, type of person. I do realize though, that to succeed and be happy in life, you need a certain amount of planning and regimentation that is where exercise fits into my life. Without it, I become closed off and numbed. With it, I feel really alive. That’s all I know. For me fitness is not a goal, it is a necessity for truly living. Fitness Center EtiquetteFitness Center EtiquetteFitness Center EtiquetteFitness Center Etiquette As with every January this should be our busiest month of the year, (particularly if it rains). To best serve our members, we do ask everyone to abide by some simple rules of etiquette that will make everyone’s experience at the fitness center more enjoyable. 1.1.1.1. Always wipe down equipment after using. We have sweat towels and spray bottles throughout the center and after using a piece of equipment please spray the towel then wipe down the equipment. It also is not a bad habit to wipe the handles before you use the machine. 2.2.2.2. A shirt and foot wear must be worn at all times. Swim attire, abbreviated, soiled or excessively worn Swim attire, abbreviated, soiled or excessively worn Swim attire, abbreviated, soiled or excessively worn Swim attire, abbreviated, soiled or excessively worn clothing is not permitted.clothing is not permitted.clothing is not permitted.clothing is not permitted. 3.3.3.3. Return equipment back to its proper area when finished using. This also includes racking of dumbbells, and weight plates. 4.4.4.4. Intentionally dropping of weights is not allowed. 5.5.5.5. If the weight is being lifted in a max or near max weight, a spotter is required. 6.6.6.6. Please do not have conversations while sitting on any equipment. If someone is waiting, it is courteous to trade off sets and limit your time to 30 minutes. 7.7.7.7. Ages 12 to 15 must go through the Young Adult Fitness Certification (YAFC) to use the fitness floor unsupervised. 8.8.8.8. Always sign up for classes or check in with the fitness desk if you are dropping in. During the busy months, some of our classes do fill up and we need to make sure everyone has the equipment or proper space needed for the class to run smoothly. It can be uncomfortable for everyone if a class is full and a member comes into class not on the list, and is asked to leave. 9.9.9.9. If you are late for a class, you must check in with the fitness desk staff to make sure that your spot has not been filled. If a class starts and it is not full we do try to fill the class and invite people on the wait list and in some cases when a member is late we do give that spot away.

10.10.10.10. If you signed up and cannot make it, please call so we can fill your spot. 11.11.11.11. All members must sign in at the reception desk when they use the fitness center or attend classes. If a member has a guest please make sure he/she has signed the guest waiver. We have added to our Fitness Schedule a great Cycle/Combo class that pairs up the best cardio work out, (cycling), with an upper body strength work out with dumbbells and bands. Marni Odem will be teaching this class starting on Wednesday, January 6th at 10:15am. Also we will be moving the Wednesday Yoga Class to 11:15 starting January 6th. If his name sounds familiar, particularly with our tennis players, it is because Taylor also has been assisting Bill Dunkle with tennis clinics and teaching some lessons here at the Club. We are really fortunate to have a physical therapist who really understands tennis. This lecture will focus on “The Simple Things That Can Prevent Knee Injuries”. You can sign up for this lecture in the fitness center.
