Our Galaxy and Other Galaxies Brad Archer Cole ChristensenJustin Summers

It is shaped like a disk being 1,000 light years thick and 100,000 light years in width Our Galaxy is the Milky Way

The thin disk has a Central Bulge and a Halo that surrounds the entire disk.

Stars in the Halo orbit at a random pattern, sometimes even crossing through the disk Stars within the disk orbit in almost the same pattern time after time

Our galaxy is made up of mostly stars Although there is no way to know for sure how many stars there are in our galaxy there has been some estimates of 100billion

Our Solar System has one Sun and eight Planets

The sun is the largest mass in our solar systemThe sun is made up of hydrogen and helium gas

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun Mercury is made up of mostly ironMercury is 3 light minutes from Earth

Venus is the 2nd planet away from the sun Venuss atmosphere is mainly made up of 96% carbon dioxideVenus is 6 light minutes away form Earth

Earth Earth is the 3rd planet from the sun Earths surface is made up of 71% water It takes light 8 min and 19 sec to reach the Earth

MarsMars is the 4th planet from the sun Marss atmosphere is mostly comprised of carbon dioxide Mars is 12.5 light minutes away from Earth

Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun Jupiters atmosphere is made up of mostly hydrogen gas and helium gasJupiter is 43 light minutes from Earth

Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun Saturn is made up of 94% hydrogen Saturn is 79 light minutes from Earth

Uranus is the 7th planet from the sunUranus is made up of various ices Uranus is 160 light minutes from Earth

Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun Neptune's atmosphere is made from about 80% hydrogen and 19% heliumNeptune is 250 light minutes away from Earth

Galaxies are vast collections of stars that populate our universe

The most recent example of this fact is the Hubble extreme Deep Field, a collection of photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope revealing thousands of galaxies in a single composite picture.
