EditorialWe have come to a most interesting

time in the history of our world. Thejunk food business is big business.Billions of dollars are spen t each yearbecause we are a hurried generationwho have no time to eat, and have thedrive-through window accommodat-ing our fast, h u rr ied pace. Caf-feinated cola drinks, hamburgers, andpotatoes prepared in grease have be-come a lifestyle in our hurried, crisis-packed twentieth century. In the beginning God created a

beautiful, perfect world and two per-fect people to inhabit it; yes, to takecare of it, and to multiply their kinduntil the earth was to be filled withhappy, healthy, perfect people. Hegave them fruits, grains, nuts andherbs of the field (vegetables) tostrengthen them in body, mind andsoul.permission was not granted to eat

flesh until after the flood, and im-mediately the life span was re-markably shortened. Whereas Noahand many others lived till they werepast 900 years, Abraham, well knownin Bible history, died at 175, andDavid lived only his three-score andten. Today we see that 70 years, witha few exceptions, is the time most .Jaydown life's burdens to await aresurrection.

In a far-off country, just a littlespeck of geography at the foot of thegreat Himalayan mountains, border-ing China, the Hunza people eat andpract'ice a lifestyle that gives manyadded years beyond he norm. Some·are still very active past theirhundredth birthday. The Bible, God's inspired Word,

gives this important counsel:"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink,or whatsoever ye do, do all to theglory of God." I Corinthians 10:31An inspired writer of the nine-

teenth and twentieth centuries, EllenG. White, directs our minds to thenatural healing processes throughproper diet, pure air, sunlight, rest, exercise, water and trust in Divinepower. "Pure air, sunlight, ab-stemiousness, rest, exercise, properdiet, the use of water, trust in divinepower,-these are the true remedies.Every person should have a knowl-edge of nature's remedial agenciesand how to apply them. It is essentialboth to understand the principles in-volved in the treatment of the sickand to have a practical training thatwill enable one rightly to use thisknowlectge."The use of natural remedies

requires an amount of care and effortthat many are not willing to give.

Nature's process of healing and up-building is gradual and to the im-patient it seems slow. The surrenderof hurtful indulgences requiressacrifice. But in the end it will befound that nature, untrammeled, does·her work wisely and well. Those whopersevere in obedience to her lawswill reap the reward in health ofbody and health of mind." Ministry ofHealing, 127Those who are looking and praying

for the return of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ, will be willingto follow the counsel of Divineinspira tion.We must remember always that our

bodies are the temple -of the livingGod. "Know ye not that ye are thetemple of God, and that the Spirit ofGod dwelleth in you?""If any man defile the temple of

God, him shall God destroy; for thetemple of God is holy, which templeye are." I Corinthians, 3:16,17The reason for this special health

edition of Our Firm Foundation maga-zine is to point the reader to the lifestyle ordained by God to prepare Hispeople for Heaven. May God blessyou as you read.

God has caused to grow out of the ground herbs for the use of man, and if we understand the nature of theseroots and herbs, and make a right use of them, there would not be the necessity of running for the doctor sofrequently, and people would be in much better health than they are today. Medical Ministry, 230, 231

There are simple herbs that can be used for the recovery of the sick, whose effect upon the system is verydifferent from that of those drugs that poison the blood and endanger life. MS. 73, 1908

It would have been better if from the first all drugs had been kept out of our sanitariums, and use made ofsuch simple remedies as are found in pure water, pure air, sunlight, and some' of the simple herbs growing in thefield. These w·ould be just as efficacious as the drugs used under mysterious names, and concocted by humanscience, and they would leave no injurious effects in the system. MS. 115, 1903 (written September 4,1902)

The Lord has given simple herbs of the field that at times are beneficial; and if every family understood howto use these herbs in case of sickness, much suffering might be prevented, and no doctor need be called. Theseold-fashioned, simple herbs, used intelligently, would have recovered many sick, who have died under drugmedication. MS. 162, 897

The light was first given to me why institutions should be established, that is, sanitariums were to reformmedical practices of physicians. This is God's method, the herbs that grow for the benefit of man, and the littlehandful of herbs kept and steeped and used for sudden ailments, have served tenfold, yes one hundred fold bet-ter purposes than all the drugs hidden under mysterious names dealt out to the sick. Testimony B-69, 1898

There are simple herbs and roots that every family may use for themselves, and need not call in a physicianany sooner than they would call a lawyer. Testimony C-17a, 1893

Many have inquired of me, "Whatcourse shall I take to best preserve myhealth?" My answer is, Cease totransgress the laws of your being;cease to gratify a depraved appetite;eat simple food; dress healthfully, which will require modest simplicity;work healthfully; and you will not besick....Many are suffering in consequence

of the transgression of their parents. They cannot be censured for theirparents' sins; but is nevertheless theirduty to ascertain wherein theirparents violated the laws of theirbeing, which has entailed upon theiroffspring so miserable an inheritance;and wherein their parents' habitswere wrong, they should change theircourse, and place themselves by cor-rect habits in a better relation tohealth.

4 O,ir Firm Foundation May, 1986

Men and women should inform:themselves in regard to thephilosophy of health. The minds ofrational beings seem shrouded indarkness in regard to their ownphysical structure, and how topreserve it in a healthy condition. The present genera tion have trustedtheir bodies with the doctors, andtheir souls with the ministers. Do theynot pay the minister well for studyingthe Bible for them, that they need notbe to the trouble? and is it not hisbusiness to tell them what they mustbelieve, and to settle all doubtfulquestions of theology without specialinvestiga tion on their part? If theyare sick, they send for the doctor-believe whatever he may tell, andswallow anything he may prescribe;for do they not pay him a liberal fee,and is it not his business to under-stand their physical ailments, andwhat to prescribe to make them well, without their being troubled with thematter?Children are sent to school to be

taught the sciences; but the science ofhuman life is wholly neglected. Thatwhich is of the most vital importance,a tr.ue knowledge of themselves, without which all other science canbe of but little advantage, is notbrought to their notice. A cruel andwicked ignorance is tolerated inregard to this important question. Soclosely is health related to ourhappiness, that we cannot have thelatter without the former. A practicalknowledge of the science of humanlife is necessary in order to glorifyGod in our bodies. It is therefore ofthe highest importance, that amongthe studies selected for childhood, physiology should occupy the firstplace. How few know anything aboutthe structure and functions of theirown bodies, and of Nature's laws. Many are d rifting a bou t wi thou tknowledge, like a ship at sea withoutcompass or anchor; and what is more, they are not interested to learn howto keep their bodies in a healthycondition, and prevent disease. The indulgence of animal appetites

has degraded and enslaved many.Self-denial, and a restraint upon theanimal apP'etites, is necessary to, elevate and establish an improvedcondition of health and morals, andpurify corrupted society. Every viola-,tion of principle in eating anddrinking, blunts the perceptivefaculties, making it impossible forthem to appreciate or place the rightvalue upon eternal things. It is or" thegrea test importa nee that man kindshould not be ignorant in regard tothe consequence of excess. Tem-perance in' all things is necessary tohealth, and the development and

growth of a good Christian character. Those who transgress the laws of

God in their physical organism, willnot be less slow to violate the law ofGod spoken from Sinai. Those whowill not, after the light has come tothem, eat and drink from principle, instead of being controlled by appe-tite, will not be tenacious in regard tobeing governed by principle in otherthings. The agitation of the subject ofreform in eating and drinking, willdevelop character, and will unerr-ingly bring to light those who make a"god of their bellies."Parents should arouse, and in the

fear of God inquire, what is truth? Atremendous responsibility rests uponthem. They should be practicalphysiologists, that they may knowwhat are, and what are not, correctphysical habits, and be enabled there-by to instruct their children. Thegreat mass are as ignorant and indif-ferent in regard to the physical andmoral education of their children asthe animal creation. And yet theydare assume the responsibilities ofparents. Every mother should ac-quaint herself with the laws thatgovern physical life. She should tea-::hher children that the indulgence ofanimal appetites, produces a morbidaction in the system, and weakenstheir moral sensibilities. Parentsshould seek for light and truth, as forhid treasures. To parents is committedthe sacred charge of forming thecharacters of their children inchildhood. They should be to theirchildren both teacher and physician. They should understand nature'swants and nature's laws. A carefulconformity to the laws God has im-planted in our being, will insurehealth, and there will not be a break-. ing down of the constitution, whichwill tempt the afflicted to call for aphysician to patch them up again. Many seem to think they have a

right to treat their own bodies as theyplease; bu t they forget that theirbodies are not their own. TheirCreator who formed them, has claimsupon them that they cannot rightlythrow off. Every needless transgres-sion of the laws which God has estab-lished in our being, is virtually aviolation of the law of God, and is asgreat a sin in the sight of Heaven asto break the ten commandments. Ig-norance upon this important subject,is sin; the light is now beaming uponus, and we are without excuse if wedo not cherish the light, and becomeintelligent in regard to these things, which it is our highest earthly inter-est to understand. The Health Reformer, August 1866

"A merry heart doeth good like amedicine: but a broken spirit driethup the bones," Proverbs 17:22The ancient wise man who wrote

the Proverbs in the Bible had an in-sight into human nature that onlytoday are we beginning to appreciate. There has been a growing flood ofscientific research in recent yearsdemonstrating the close relationshipbetween the mind and our body. Ithas been shown that the way wethink can profoundly affect how ourbody functions for illness or health. It is also becoming more and moreclear that the way we care for ourbody can have a significant influenceupon how our brain works, and there-fore upon the effectiveness of ourthinking, and the kinds of moods orfeelings we experience, as well asupon our moral and spiritualsensi bilities.Again these concepts that are rela-

tively new to us today were remark-ably anticipated over one hundredyears ago by a woman known for herkindness but who spoke with theauthority of a messenger of God.Wha t is even more amazing, the ideasshe taught were so revolutionary andspelled out so clearly that they arestill as advanced as the latestresearch. Yet this pioneer of theholistic 1 health movement of todaylived in an age when there was verylimited scientific knowledge ofphysiology and hygiene.' Surroundedas she was by folk remedies andmyths, patent potions and harsh andheroic medical practices, she had theuncanny insights that made it pos-sible for her to sort through this con-

fusion of voices and articulate prin-ciples of healthful living that areonly now being verified by scientificresearch. This unheralded heroine of natural

healing was Ellen Gould White. Morethan a health reformer, Ellen White isaccepted by hundreds of thousands of. Christians today as one to whom wasgiven the prophetic gift as promised'to the church in I Corinthians 12:10.-Ellen White was firmly rooted in

the fundamental Protestant Christianfaith. She always pointed her readersand hearers to the Bible as theprimary source of knowledge. In allof her voluminous writings there isalways that high spiritual tone andemphasis reminding men and womenthat they are the precious sons anddaughters of the Creator.

Ellen White took a very broad butsimple view of man and his condition.Created in the image of God, manwas intended to enjoy unlimitedhealth and abundance of joyfulliving, but this could be possible onlyas long as he would live in harmonywith the natural laws of his being.

These natural laws represent guide-lines for positive and optimally satis-fying living and of necessity mustencompass the physical, the mentaland the moral dimensions of life. Thus, these rules of life are seen asinseparable.Rather than arbitrary prohibitions,

these rules are safeguards to protectand insure our health and happiness. If we indulge the appetite in eatingfoods or using substances that areharmful to our body, then we mustexpect to experience the unpleasantand destructive consequences of thatindulgence. In 1866 Mrs White stated:"God has formed laws which

govern our constitutions, and theselaws which He has placed in ourbeing are divine, and for every trans-gression there is a fixed penalty, which must sooner or later berealized. The majori ty of diseaseswhich the human family have beenand still are suffering under, theyhave created by ignorance of theirown organic laws. They seem indif-ferent in regard to the matter ofhealth, and work perseveringly totear themselves to pieces, and whenbroken down and debilitated in bodyand mind, send for the doctor anddrug themselves to death.,,2The bottom line of Ellen White's

teaching on health, put into modernMadison Avenue language, would be"You can't fool Mother Nature," andespecially would she emphasize thatthis fact is inescapa bly true in all thedimensions of life, including thespiritual. But she would have pre-ferred to quote the New Testamenttruism, which she did many times,

"Be not deceived: God is not mocked;for whatsoever a man soweth, thatshall he also reap." Galatians 6:7As a clinical psychologist of many

years experience, I have beenintrigued and awed by the uncannyaccuracy with which this woman an-ticipated the findings of recent scien-tific research. She was very specificin emphasizing that to a large extentwe are what we eat, and that what weeat can have a profound effect uponhow our brain works.Dr. H. L. Newbold,3 psychiatrist, in

New York reported as many as 75 percent of all troubled marriages couldbe helped by a dietary change, and hepoints primarily to the excessive useof refined sugar. Why is this? In onlyrecent years we have' learned thathypoglycemia, sometimes called hyper-insulinism, is a condition in whichoverindulgence in refined sugar putsan extra strain on the pancreas. Toomuch insulin is produced, resulting inan excessive drop in the level ofglucose in the blood. Glucose, orblood sugar, is the sole energy supplyfor the brain. If the brain does notget enough energy, it cannot do itsjob. Now, we each have two brains.

Our civilized brain is the one thatdoes our thinking and remembering. It also involves judgment, self-control, our spiritual values, con-'science and control of emotions. Theanimal brain runs the machinery ofthe body, the heart, breathing, digestion, and so on, and also is theseat of emotions. The civilized brainacts as a governor and can overrideand control the animal brain. When there is not enough energy

food or glucose in the blood, theanimal brain takes its share first andthe civilized brain gets what is left.So we act like an animal--well, lesscivilized. The result is that we feelnervous, irritable, unreasonable andtired. We can't think clearly. We justdon't care, or we are given tounreasonable, angry ou tbursts or be-come depressed, suspicious with lack

of sexual interest, and in over 80 percent of cases we crave sweets, makingthe problem worse. It is easy to seewhy people with low blood sugar tcndto growl and fight with each other.I recall a middle-aged woman who

came to me with a multitude ofproblems. Nothing seemed to be goingright for her. When I asked about hereating habits, I discovered she wasdrinking 14 cans of pop a day. Simplycorrecting that habit dramaticallychanged her ability to cope.A young mother was referred to

me beca use of anxiety and depression. Her home was unhappy. She was dis-couraged with herself and life ingeneral. She was a sincere Christian, but could not understand why herrelationship with God did not havethe positive effects in her life that ithad in the past.We discussed what she was eating

and some of the simple principles ofhealthful eating. She tried them andin a short time she was feeling so wellthat she said, "Eating like this wouldbe good for my family too!" I hadhoped that she would see that. So shestarted being more careful aboutwhat and when she fed her childrenand her husband.I forgot to tell you that she had

two children that were a real trial toher, a t least good for a headache ortwo. They were irritable, whining, fighting, squabbling, getting intothings, with poor concentration anddriving their mother right up thewalls. Well, she started feeding themdifferently. No more sweets to keepthem quiet, but a balanced diet ofgood wholesome natural foods. And itbegan to payoff. One day Grandma came to visit.

The children were playing quietly onthe floor getting along with eachother, no fussing, no whining, nofighting. Grandma couldn't believethese were the same children. Finally Ishe said, "What have you done tothesc children? I've never seen themso good." The mother's reply was,"I've just been feeding them right."

As early as 1865 Ellen White wasspeaking out about the unhealthfuleffects of sweets and in 1901 shewrote, "Sugar . . . clouds the brain.and brings peevishness into thedisposition.,,4 And we thought wewere discovering something new.In 1891 she said sugar in the sys-

tem reduces the body's power of resis-tance and its strength to combatdiseaseS A study by Dr. U. D.Register6 at Lorna Linda Universityfound that excessive sugar in theblood stream reduces the white bloodcells' ability to fight invadingbacteria. In fact, a single slice ofchocola te cake can cut the body'sgerm fighting capacity by more than50 per cent for up to eight hours.Again Ellen White was right ontarget, generations ahead of her time.In 1870 Ellen Whi te said, "Sugar

clogs the system. It hinders the work-ing of the living machine.,,7Now we know that if we have too

much sugar the liver converts the ex-tra into fat, increasing the level offatty substances in the blood whichhas been positively correlated withcoronary heart disease, which in-volves clogging of the arteries. Only aperson with special insight could haveknown that fact in 1870.In 1868, Ellen White warned

against the use of animal fat. s Thirtyyears later she was still advisingabout the harmfulness of fats, sayingtha t God had given special instruc-tion that they should not be eaten. Why? "Because," she answered, "theiruse would make a diseased current ofblood in the human system."gDr. R. A. Swank lO did some studies

at the University of Oregon observingthe circulation of the blood in thetiny capillaries in the transparentcheek pouches of hamsters. Under themicroscope he could observe the littlered blood cells racing along carryingtheir load of oxygen. When these cellsflow through the tiny capillaries theyhave to squeeze through tight quar-ters. Sometimes they even have tofold over to get through. It is here in

the capillaries that the life-givingoxygen is supplied to the tissues ofthe body. But Dr. Swank and his associates

discovered that when the hamstershad been given free fat in their diet, the fat level in the blood increased, and the little red cells began to stickand clump together. When the cellscame to the opening of a capillarythey formed a traffic jam and noneof them could get through, and thatminute area became starved foroxygen. At the same time the clump-ingof the cells reduced their exposedsurface area so that they were 32 percent less able to carry or exchangeoxygen and carbon dioxide. Dr.Swank thought if this was happeningin the cheek pouches it must be hap-pening all over the body and in thebrain too.Dr. Swank then arrariged to test

the oxygen content of the brain ofthese animals. He found that after afat meal when this clumping of thecells occurred there was a 62 per centdecrease of oxygen in the brain. Anda brain without adequate oxygen justcannot do its job. Two to three hoursafter the hamsters drank their mealof cream one fourth of the capillarieswere totally blocked. It was 72 hoursafter the fat meal before the oxygencontent of the brain was back to 95per cent of capacity. But the averageAmerican does not wait 72 hours butin 4 to 6 hours eats another heavyfat-laden meal. But hamsters are not people. So Dr.

Meyer Freidman11 in San Franciscotried a similar experiment on forty-four healthy firemen. Instead ofcheek pouches he examined the cir-culation of blood in the white of theeye, i.e., the conjunctival circulation. That is where the red is when one hasbloodshot eyes.Dr. Friedman observed very

similar capillary blockages after afatty meal. This blockage was just astrue with polyunsaturated fats aswith saturated fats. If the capillariesin the eyes are blocked, we can be as-

sured that this process of oxygenstarva tion is going on all through thebody, including the brain. And abrain without adequate oxygen can-not think properly and is crippled inits spiritual and moral judgment.Ellen White warned against

"grease of all kinds,,12 because itcauses "a diseased current of blood inthe human system."IS Again she wasright on target over a hundred yearsbefore it was "discovered" by modernscientific research.Again in 1868 the same writer told

us, "Tea is poisonous to the system.Christians should let it alone. The in-fluence of coffee is in a degree thesame as tea, but the effect upon thesystem is still worse.,,14 She continuedto give such counsel, and in 1890 sheadvised,"Coffee is a hurtful indulgence. It

temporarily excites the mind to un-wanted action, but the aftereffect isexhaustion, prostration, paralysis ofthe mental, moral and physicalpowers. The mind becomes enervated, and unless through determined effortthe habit is overcome, the activity ofthe brain is permanently lessened. Allthese nerve irritants are wearingaway the life forces, and the restless-ness caused by sha ttered nerves, theimpotence, the mental feebleness, be-come a warriI1g element, antagonizingto spiritual progress."ISIn the February 12, 1983 issue,

Science News reported "the firstevidence that long-term consumptionof caffeine-the psychoactive in-gredient of coffee-causes significantchanges in brain tissue." It was fur-.ther stated that National Institute ofMental Health scientists have foundthat these brain changes cause ab-,normal sedation and result in agreater craving for caffeine. Theyalso found other changes involved inthe brain;s capacity "to deal wIthanxiety.Meanwhile another group of scien-

tists at Prince Henry's Hospital inMelbourne, Australia, have dis-covered another compound present in

both regular and decaffeina tedcoffee, but not in tea or cocoa. Theyobserved that one cup of coffee con-tains five times the active dose ofthis substance, which affects be-havior by altering the brain's ca-pacity to deal with pain anddepression. Here again scientists are just dis-

covering what Ellen White was. teach-ing over a century before. And theseare just a few examples. If she was sowell on target in her advice regardingthe natural laws of physical health, itjust might make sense for us to takeseriously what she has counseledregarding the spiritual and the moraldimensions of our lives as well.

"Since the mind and the soul findexpression through the body, bothmental and spiritual vigor are ingreat degree dependent upon physicalstrength and activity; whateverpromotes physical health promotes thedevelopment of a strong mind and awell-balanced character. Withouthealth, no one can as distinctly un-derstand or as completely fulfill hisobligations to himself, to his fellow-beings, or to his Crea tor. Thereforethe health should be as faithfullyguarded as the character. Aknowledge of physiology and hygieneshould be the basis of all educationaleffort."lWith understanding of the mar-

velous way we function comes arealization of the wonder of God'slove, and a new respect for ourselves. Then we feel more inclined to exer-cise our will-power to make anychanges necessary in our lifestyles togain and maintain optimum health. We have had such a wealth of infor-mation at hand, Ellen G. White booksas well as the Bible, that we should befar advanced over what we a!e. Butwe either don't read-or read verylittle-or we zero in on one areawithout balancing it out by studying

what was really said over the whole. The end result is the same whetherwe are too liberal or too strict, (forwe have been cautioned many timesto "avoid extremes"). We end up justtaking life for granted and never ap-preciating the blessing of good healthuntil we lose it.So many "know nothing of the in-

fluence of the body u'pon the .mindand of the mind upon the body. Themind, which allies finite with infi-nite, they do not seem to understand.Every organ of the body was made tobe servant to the mind. The mind isthe capital of the body.,,2Why? Your brain, a two- to three-

It wasprogra mmed by God Hi msel f, toreceive nerve messages from everypart of your body to relay them tothe correct section of the brain, andto send back a proper response to theoriginating area. And there is aprotective reflex arc in the spinalcord for just such times as when youtouch a hot stove, that jerks yourhand away even before the pain sen-sors sending a message through thebrain cause you to feel the pain.

Some twelve billion nerve units, called neurons, carryon the fantasticinvisible switching and shuttling ofan estimated three billion impulsesper second racing around inside youand through your brain at a speed ofsomewhat more than two hundredmiles per hour. Your healthy braindoesn't make mistakes either.Tra veling of impulses is carried on

by electrochemical processes withchanges occurring one thousand timesper second. Because one neuron is notdirectly connected to another, mes-sages are shunted across tiny spark-gap relays, called synapses. Chemicalsat each synapse carry the impulseflow smoothly.Every system in your body works

on a counterbalance, to protect youfrom too much or too little. There arealso protective mechanisms, rightwhere needed, to trigger warningsand measurements to the brain viathe nervous system, to speed up orslow down, move up or down, or in orout, and to keep your heart beating,your- breathing adjusting, and yourbody balancing. At the same time, your brain is receiving and reactingto countless impulses related toseeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and

tasting. All of these are taken care ofautomatically in brain centersdesigned for this purpose--becauseGod knew you could never manage itall consciously.Your brain is the marvelous, com-

plex control-board of your body. It,in turn, is affected by your physicalcondition, by diet, and by emotionalreactions. All of this affects your self-control, reasoning, judgment, anddecision-making ability. The mindand body are so closely associatedthat whatever affects one, affects theother. The brain is the only way God can

reach us. If anything dulls it so thatit can no longer discern spiritualthings or right or wrong, we will notbe prepared to meet the Lord whenHe returns. How important it is thatwe gain a knowledge of how ourbodies function, so that we can keepourselves in optimum health and ourminds clear to discern. God will notdo this for us. He cooperates with usbut expects us to make the effort-then He will guide. So the mind is the control center.

What about the rest of the body? Each system works together with thewhole in harmony.

The Respiratory System

The average adult breathes morethan twelve-thousand quarts of aireach day. And before each breathreaches the lungs, it is filtered, warmed (or cooled), and moistened tojust the right temperature and humi-dity needed by the lungs. This air-conditioning system begins in thenose (mouth breathing won't do it)where hairs help screen dust particles.Deeper passages moisten and warmthe air (one quart of water pertwenty-four hours is added to the airwe breathe), and a special blanket ofsticky mucus, moving back like an es-calator (at a rate of one inch everythree minutes), is continually re-placed by various glands to catch, screen, and protect from infection. The whole respiratory tract is linedwith a special mucous membrane withthousands of tiny hair-like projec-tions, all moving this layer of mucusaway from the lungs to protect themfrom dust and irritating particles.Smoking interferes with this protec-tive movement. As we breathe, the lungs are ex-

panded and contracted by movementof the diaphragm (a large muscle) andthe cage, which .force air in andout similar to a bellows. The lungs

cling to the chest wall because of avacuum-like pull, and are contractedand expanded at an average rate ofeighteen times per minute-abouttwenty-five thousand diaphragm con-tractions per day. The lungs have nomuscles of their own, but they con-tain some four hundred million al-veoli (terminal air sacs) resemblingmicroscopic clusters of grapes. If thewalls of all these air sacs could bespread out, they would cover a sur-face the size of a tennis court, yetthis immense surface is compactedinto the small spacc:.,.of two lungs. Thewalls of each air sac are-incrediblythin-just one microscopic cell thick-as are the walls of the capillarieslacing them. Gas molecules can movethrough the walls, and oxygen fromair we breathe is picked up byhemoglobin in our red cells, andtransported to everyone of the tril-lions of body cells. At each celloxygen is exchanged for wastes frommetabolism, which are carried back tothe lungs as carbon dioxide andexhaled. We can help by sitting and stand-

ing correctly, and taking deep breathsof fresh air. However, the lungs areonly the beginning of respiration.

The Heart

The heart is another marvelousorgan. Not so complex as some others,it is essentially a tough, hollowmuscle about the size of a man's fist. But it does an incredible amount ofwork-beginning to beat less than onemonth after conception and continu-ing for a lifetime. It squeezes andrelaxes at an average rate of seventytimes per minute, and pumps theblood around a closed system of bloodvessels sixty-thousand to one-hundredthousand miles in length in ap-proximately one minute. For everypound of excess weight the body addsone more mile of blood vessels. The heart speeds up when you are

active, slows when you rest. It pumps

about five ounces at each stroke in anadult and one beat at a time, pumpsabout four thousand gallons per day."The work done by the heart in

twelve hours could lift a sixty-fiveton weight one foot in the air. Or in ayear, lift its owner one hundred milesfrom the ground.us

Don't forget thatman was designed foractivity, and regularexercise brings manybenefits

During exercise great changesoccur. Light exercise requires fourtimes more oxygen than resting.Strenuous exercise (heat producing)requires ten times more oxygen, andthe blood is then shunted to the skinfor cooling. These increased demandsfor oxygen are met by a decreasedflow of blood to the abdominalorgans. For this reason strenuous ex-ercise should be avoided right aftereating. At that time the abdominalorgans are busy with digestion andneed more oxygen, so blood flow tothe extremities is decreased. If youexercise too much at this time youmay feel faint, nauseated, or ex-perience leg cramps. But don't forget that man was

designed for activity. Regular exer-cise brings many benefits; it tonesmuscles, increases circulation, strengthens the heart (if it is aerobicexercise), lowers cholesterol levels, and even decreases the amount of in-sulin needed by diabetics. If you don't exercise, your body

deteriorates. Muscles become flabby, weight increases, and blood vesselslose elasticity. The efforts of thebody to repair weaknesses may resultin plaques forming in blood vessels, possibly resulting in heart attack, embolism (moving- blood clot) orstroke, depending on what happenedwhere. When blood vessels become hard-

ened and narrowed, the condition iscalled Atherosclerosis. Young peopleas well as older ones may have it. It isoften related to a high saturated-fatdiet.High blood pressure, diabetes,

heredity, cigarettes, sedentary living, stress, obesity, even too much coffeeand caffeine influence blood choles-

The Skin

You are the loser ifyou don't do yourpart and chew yourfood

What is the outside inside of you?Try to guess before looking. (I love toask this when giving health lectures;no one has ever guessed correctly, al-though medically trained peoplecould if they thought about it.)Can something inside you really be

outside of you? Yes, it can. Your di-gestive tract is. It is an open-endedmuscular tube which passes throughyour body. Wastes passing through therectum, have never been inside you-only surrounded by your body. Onlywhat passes through the wall of thedigestive tract gets inside. This remarkable, continuous tube

is more than thirty feet long, and hasvarious bulges, turns, and regionswith special names. Muscularmechanisms propel material along itscourse, and valves regulate delivery. Here and there chemicals are intro-duced through connecting tubes orsurfaces right where needed.Digestion is a process of con-

tinuous chemical simplification ofmaterials entering the mouth. Specialwork is carried on in each area andone does not do the work of another. If you don't chew your food

properly, the ptyalin (first of a seriesof catalytic enzymes which producechemical processes) cannot split thestarches you eat into simple sugars, and digestion of starches will not becomplete. You are the loser if youdon't do your part and chew. As soonas you swallow, a kneading, milkingprocess called peristalsis begins. Thismuscular action will continue thelength of the esophagus and onthrough the bowels. It propels foodalong by relaxing muscles ahead andconstricting muscles behind in rhyth-mic waves.

We see only the outside coveringthat wraps everything inside our

skeletal structure-our skin. Did youknow that your skin is the largest or-gan of your body? It wraps an adultwith approximately twenty squarefeet of one thirty-fifth to one-eighthinch thick tissue, and weighs aboutseven pounds. But it is much more fascinating

than just being the largest.Draw a one-half inch square on

the back of your hand. Now think ofthis: in this small one square cen-timeter of skin you have four yardsof nerves to carry impulses, one yardof blood vessels to carry nourishment, ten hairs, two sensors to detect cold, two sensors to detect heat, fifteensebaceous glands to keep skin supple,twenty-five pressure organs fortouch, one hundred sweat glands tocarry away impurities, and twohundred nerve endings to record pain. You also have protective mechanisms'

in water they develop tiny electrical(positive and negative) charges. These, along with the tiny but veryimportant amount of hydrogen in ourbodies, maintain a chemical balance(called acid-base balance). Any devia-tion too far from normal in eitherdirection can cause unconsciousnessor even death. There is a constant exchange be-

tween extracellular (outside cells),and intracellular (inside) fluids. It's agigantic task to keep this extra cel-lular fluid volume constant so thatevery cell can keep working. Yet wearen't aware of all this mysterious, awesome, activity because we don'tsee or feel it.

Body Fluids

Your red blood cellscarry oxygen to allsixty trillion bodycells

Your blood is truly a "river oflife" within you. Your red cells carryoxygen to all sixty trillion body cellsand carry away waste products (asbefore mentioned). The blood also de-livers nutrients to proper centers un-til needed. White cells are the"guardian soldiers." They standguard, and also patrol the body-through the blood vessels, to surroundand destroy any germs. If an infec-tion or wound is present somewhere, some white cells can leave the bloodvessels and travel to the site-in in-creased numbers, to fight infection.Their ability is seriously reduced byrefined sugar. It raises blood-sugarlevels, and can attach to the red cells, where it remains for the life of thecell, making the cells "sticky" so thatthey have a tendency to clumptogether. Remember reading EllenWhite's statement about sugar clog-ging the system? This is anotherstatement which medical science hasproved to be true.Platelets (one fourth the size of

red cells) help in clotting blood andhealing wounds. All of the body's cells are bathed

in a sea of fluids consisting mostly ofwater and certain dissolved sub-stances (salt and minerals) calledelectrolytes. When these are dissolved

hundred fifty or above, you doublethe risk of heart attack. We are what we eat (even though

we hate to admit that!), and we cando much to improve our health by im-proving our eating habits and exercis-ing regularly. Try it and see-you willfeel so much more alive that youwon't ever think of it as sacrifice orself-denial, but will regard it as agreat benefit and a blessing-which itis.

The stomach is the largest bulge'along this tract. It has valves at eitherend to prevent backflow, and ejectspartially digested contents at inter-vals of every fifteen minutes, buttakes an average of three to fivehours to churn, liquefy, and dis-charge an average meal. The gastricjuices found in the stomach are verystrong. One drop on your skin couldreally burn. Thirty-five millionglands and special cells in thestomach produce all these: Hydro-chloric acid, Pepsin (which works·only in an acid medium and digestsprotein), Rennin (which has the soletask of curdling milk), a factor whichena bles B- I2 to be dissolved throughthe intestinal wall further on, plusmucus and other substances whichhelp digestion. The stomach is protected from

being digested by gastric juices by alining of slick mucous membraneswith a protective film of mucus andby the fact that hydrochloride isdiluted in proportion to stomachcontents. Most digestion takes place in the

small intestine. Soon after leaving thestomach the acid contents arechanged to alkaline by bile, pancre-atic juice, and other local secretionsin the first section of the small intes-tine which loops like a horseshoe(called the duodenum). As it leavesthis area, it passes on to the greaterarea of the small intestines. Thewhole of this area is lined with amucosal lining raised in circularfolds. You have an estimated fivemillion round-ended fingerlikeprojections called villi (which feellike velvet), with glands at their basesto secrete enzymes, mucus, and otherconstituents of the alkaline intestinaljuices. Because of these villi, there isfive times the area of the skin sur-face in which to work, and work theydo! The villi sway, lengthen, shorten, swell, shrink, and agitate. Semiliquidcontents are churned around so much

It would takechemists weeks ormonths to do whatyour digestive tractaccomplishes in a fewhours

that you can sometimes hear therumbling. (It isn't your stomach thatgrowls-it's the villi.)The walls of the small intestine are

impermeable to large molecules-sospecific enzymes perform specifictasks. One can't do another's work, but they work together to completethe whole. Lipases split fats, proteasessplit proteins, amylases split starch. We take calmly, and usually

intestine where there are no villi, andperistalsis is slower. It takes twelve tofourteen hours, usually, for passagethrough to the rectum. Very little ex-cept water is absorbed from the largein testine.

The Liver

Our bodies have efficient chemists. The largest solid organ we have is theliver, located just below the dia-phragm on your right. It weighs aboutfour pounds and is an efficientchemical plant, performing morefunctions than any other organ. It canmodify almost any chemicalstructure. It plays a major role indetoxifying toxins, or poisons, ordrugs. It manufactures cholesterol,

enzymes, protein, vitamin A (fromcarotene), blood coagulation factors, and bile. It acts as a reservoir forblood, and stores some vitaJl.lins. Itconverts glucose to glycogen andstores it until needed to sustain bloodsugar levels. The liver also plays apart in the storage of iron, destroysold blood cells, and convertshemoglobin to bilirubin (the principlepigment of bile).

The Pancreas

The pancreas is a narrow organ, about six inches long, lying mostlybehind the stomach. It serves a doublepurpose. Some of its glands produceinsulin, which it secretes into theblood stream to help with the utiliza-tion of sugars. Entirely different cellsproduce a clear pancreatic juicewhich enters the duodenum alongwith bile and contains enzymes forsplitting proteins, fats, and carbo-hydrates.All of these organs and digestive

processes are marvelous in theirtiming and control mechanisms.

The Kidneys

Last but certainly not least, are apair of vital organs essential to life--the kidneys. These bean-shapedorgans, each the size of a small fist, weighing about one-half pound, arethe master chemists of the body. Theymonitor the quality of the blood, andare constantly filtering various sub-stances from the blood to reabsorbuseful ones and to concentrate wastesinto urine to be passed from the body. The kidneys regulate the composi-

tion of the body fluids so that no or-gan is poisoned by harmful endproducts of its own metabolism. Theentire body fluids pass through thekidneys about fifteen times each day.Approximately one thousand sevenhundred quarts of blood flow throughthe kidneys each day. About onehundred eighty quarts of filtrate pass

·The Role ofMedicalMjnjstry

Ron Spear

For decades the term "medicalmissionary" was common usage inAdventist pulpits and institutions. Inrecent years the term has fallen fromsuch high favor, and is heard lessfrequently now. Commonly used ornot, it is important that we under-stand what God was trying to teachHis Church by these words, for weare assured that "we have come to atime when every member of theChurch should take hold of medicalmissionary work. The world is a lazarhouse filled with victims of bothphysical and spiritual disease.Everywhere people are perishing forlack of knowledge of the truths thathave been committed to us. Membersof the Church are in need of anawakening, that they may realizetheir responsibility to impart thesetruths." Testimonies, vol. 7, 62What is medical missionary work?

Is it just a Christian doctor in his of-fice and in the hospital diagnosing, trea ting disease, and dispensingdrugs? And more than that, what isthe purpose of the Lord's interest inour health? What is to be the endresult of the "health message"?The Bible makes it clear that our

bodies are the temple of the livingGod, and if we knowingly defile ourbodies by intemperance, we are heldaccountable to Him. (See I Corin-thians 3:16, 17; 6:19, 20) By defilingour bodies we are destroying our-selves for this life and also foreternity.Health reform is a balanced way

of living which brings our lives intoperfect harmony with the gospel of

12 O"r Firm Foundation May, 1986

salvation. By practIcIng gospeltemperance, the mind becomes clear, perceptive, and responsive to theHoly Spirit's voice. The regenerationof man's spiritual nature is the finalgoal of the care given to his physicalnature.Ellen White said it clearly: "It

should ever be kept prominent thatthe great object to be attainedthrough this channel [health institu-tions and health reform] is not onlyhealth, but perfection and the spiritof holiness, which cannot be attainedwith diseased bodies and minds."Testimonies, vol. I, 554Here is the link that binds together

the work of health reform and thetrue medical missionary. The gospelinvitation to receive the power to livea life of holiness is to be prominentin our minds and in our work. By fol-lowing God's plan, medical mis-sionaries are able--by their own care-ful lifestyles in Bible temperance--toteach this beautiful lifestyle to all theworld. As bodies are restored tohealth, minds will be able to receiveand live the great Bible truths by thepower of God in the final hours ofthis earth's history. This is a work of the greatest

importance, for eternal interests, inaddition to physical health, are atstake. Surely the Lord would notleave us to blunder along blindly in awork such as this. No, He hasn't. God's last-day mes-

senger tells us in Testimonies, vol. 9,172, "Let our ministers, who havegained an experience in preaching theWord, learn how to give simple

treatments, and then labor intel-ligently as medical missionaryevangelists.""Those who labor in our con-

ferences as ministers should becomeacquainted with the work of minis-tering to the sick. No minister shouldbe proud that he is ignorant where heshould be wise. Medical missionarywork connects man with his fellowmen and with God." MS. 33, 1901The great cities of the world espe-

cially can be reached only by the truemedical missionary work. Again in-spiration reveals God's truth on thisimportant subject."Intemperance has filled our

world, and medical missions shouldbe established in every city. By this Ido not mean that expensive institu-tions should be established, callingfor a large outlay of means. Thesemissions are to be conducted in sucha way that they. will not be a heavydrain on the cause; and their work is·to prepare the way for the estab-lishment of present truth. Medicalmissionary work should have its rep-resentatives in every place in connec-tion with the establishment of ourchurches. The relief of bodily suffer-ing opens the way for the healing ofthe sin-sick soul. ... Let our peopleawake to the importance of thiswork." MS. 88, 1902"Henceforth medical missionary

work is to be carried forward with anearnestness with which it has neveryet been carried. This work is thedoor through whiCh the truth is tofind entrance to the large cities."Testimonies, vol. 9, 167

"To my ministerial brethren I would say, Prosecute this workwith tact and ability. Set to work the young men and the youngwomen in our churches. Combine the medical missionary work with

the proclamation of the third angel's message. Make regular, organized efforts to lift the churches out of the dead level into

which they have fallen, and have remained for years. Send into thechurch workers who will set the principles of health reform in theirconnection with the third angel's message before every family andindividual. Encourage all to take a part in work for their fellowmen, and see if the breath of life will not quickly return to these

churches." Letter 54, 1898

"As a means of overcomingprejudice and gaining access tominds, medical missionary work mustbe done, not in one or two placesonly, but in many places where thetruth has not yet been proclaimed. Weare to work as gospel medicalmissionaries, to heal the sin-sick soulsby giving them the message ofsalvation. This work will break downprejudice as nothing else can." ibid.,211"He designs that the great subject

of health reform shall be agitated andthe public mind deeply stirred toinvestigate." Testimonies, vol. 3, 162"Medical missionary work is in no

case to be divorced from the gospelministry. The Lord has specified thatthe two shall be as closely connectedas the arm is with the body. Withoutthis union neither part of the work iscomplete. The medical missionarywork is the gospel in illustration."Testimonies, vol. 6, 240, 241For the success of His work, God

has combined with the gospel thena tural healing ministry of medicalmissionary work. As might be logi-cally expected, true medical mission-ary work is to be taught in our medi-cal schools."The medical school at Lorna

Linda is to be of the highest order, because those who are in the schoolhave the privilege of maintaining aliving connection with the wisest ofall physicians, from whom there iscommunicated knowledge of a supe-rior order." Lorna Linda Messages, 33"Those who place themselves un-

der the instruction of the great Medi-cal Missionary, to be workers togetherwith Him, will have a knowledge thatthe world, with all its traditionarylore, cannot supply." Counsels' OnHealth, 371"At Lorna Linda there is to come

to the physicians and teachers a newunderstanding of the principles thatmust govern the medical work. Aneducation is to be given that is al-together in harmony with the teach-ings of the word of God." MedicalEvangelistic Library, vol. 1, 9Clearly the Lord has outlined for

us a distinct line of labor for our fel-low men. More than distinct, it is saidto be superior. From a strictly humanpoint of view this would be borderingon arrogance and snobbery. But whenhas the work of the Lord ever beenunderstood from a strictly humanpoint of view? It should not surpriseus then that there would be dif-ferences between the medical mis-sionary work and the usual practiceof medicine."The purpose of our health institu-

tions is not first and foremost to bethat of hospitals. The health institu-

tions connected with the closing workof the gospel in the earth stand forthe grea t principles of the gospel inall its fullness. Christ is the one to berevealed in all the institutions con-nected with the closing work, butnone of them can do it so fully as thehealth institutions where the sick andsuffering come for relief and deliver-ance from both physical and spiritualailment." Review and Herald, October29,1914"The Lord has given instruction

that the gospel is to be carriedforward; and the gospel includeshealth reform in all its phases. Ourwork is to enlighten the world; for itis blind to the movements which aretaking place, preparing the way forthe plagues which- God -will permit tocome upon the world. God's faithfulwatchmen must give the warning....It is the Lord's design tha t the restor-ing influence of health reform shallbe a part of the last great effort toproclaim the gospel message." Coun-sels on Diet and Foods, 75Great blessings are always suscep-

tible of abuse. Again the Lord hasmarked out the points of danger, thatwe may be on our guard."In perfect and complete unity

with the gospel ministry, the work ofhealth reform will reveal its God-given power. Under the influence ofthe gospel, great reforms will be madeby medical missionary work. Butseparate medical missionary workfrom the gospel, and the work will becrippled." ibid."When the gospel ministers and the

medical missionary workers are notunited, there is placed in ourchurches the worst evil that can beplaced there." Unabridged Lorna LindaMessages, 92Every Bible doctrine and teaching

is based on the fact of the creation ofthis world, and the re-creation ofman through the gospel. Thereforeevery effort in the gospel commissionis to restore man to his perfection ofbody, mind, and soul in which Godoriginally created him so that he canhave the character of Christ perfectlyreproduced in him, and be safe tosave for eternity. As we close this article, let the in-

spired statement given below tell uswhat is true medical missionary work:"God's blessing will rest upon

every effort made to awaken an in-terest in health reform; for it isneeded everywhere. There must be arevival on this subject; for God pur-poses to accomplish much throughthis agency. Present temperance withall its advantages in reference tohealth. Educate people in the laws oflife so that they may know how topreserve health. The efforts actuallyput forth at present are not meetingthe mind of God. Drug medication isa curse in this enlightened age."Educate away from drugs. Use

them less and less, and depend moreon hygienic agencies; then nature willrespond to God's physicians--pure air, pure water, proper exercise, a clearconscience."Many might recover without one

grain of medicine, if they would liveout the laws of health. Drugs needseldom be used. It will requireearnest, patient, protracted effort toestablish the work and to carry itforward upon hygienic principles. Butlet fervent prayer and faith be com-bined with your efforts, and you willsucceed. A doubtful remedy, so they say, isbettcr than no remedy at all. Logic ofthis nature could be objected to, espe-cially when considering medical prac-tices of the 1800s. It was excitingadventurc, though, this wholesale ex-perimentation on a hapless public. And it did produce results. Observantphysicians had ample opportunity tolearn the effects of such "medicines"as calomel, mercury, opium, arsenic, and strychnine.A hundred and more years later,

the good doctors' efforts may strikeus as absurd, or even humorous; atthe time, people were dying. Fortu-natcly, a few individuals realizedthat something must be wrong. The"science" of medicine neededrethinking. But where to begin?By the 1840s, a start had been

made on several fronts. Europeanphysicians seemed somewhat more

Missionwilling to leave off the practice of"drugging" than their Americancounterparts, but individuals such asDr. Jacob Bigelow and Oliver WendellHolmes played an active role in chal-lenging the system in the UnitedStates. Samuel Thompson and EdwardHitchcock pointed out the value ofnatural remedies and a rational ap-proach to prevention of disease.Cleanliness, proper sleep, exercise, and a simple, wholesome diet (oftenvegetarian) were approved, whileto bacco, alcohol, narcotics, grease, tight clothing, and stale air wereroundly condemned.Best remembered of these early

diet. Especially did he emphasize theimportance of cereal foods, prefer-ably made from unrefined flour. (Onecan only wonder what his reactionwould be if he were shown themodern version of a Graham cracker.)A controversial figure on account ofhis virulent attacks on all opponents, even he found himself upstaged by anewcomer on the "natural health"circuit.Mrs. Mary Gove and Dr. Joel Shew

brought to public attention a naturalcurative that was plentiful, inexpen-sive, and amazingly effective. Shew'sWater Cure Journal, first published in1846 grew under the editorship of Dr.Russell T. Trail to a circulation of30,000 by 1851. With hydrotherapy'snew-found popularity, a number ofinstitutions bearing the generic titleof "Water Cure" soon beganoperation. The most successful was"Our Home on the Hillside," operatedat Dansville, New York, by Dr. J.C.Jackson and his adopted daughter,Dr. Harriet Austin. Here, for nearlyforty years, patients received watertreatments ranging from increasedwater consumption, to hot packs, tothe "heroic" cold plunge.Still, in the midst of progress,

there were problems. Dr. Trail, forexample, completely banned salt fromthe diet, declaring it to be only a"chemical" and thus lacking "vitalaction." He denied organic chemistryas a contradiction of terms, assertingthat the body did not employ theprinciple of chemistry in any way. Tofurther complicate matters, the ad-herents of spiritism (the practice ofcommunicating through seances andother means with the spirits of the"dead") soon began to accept and ad-vocate certain distinctive aspects ofhealth reform. Conscientious Chris-tians who accepted the Bible's defini-tion of this phenomenon as satanicactivity had strong reservations aboutbeing associated in any way withsuch a movement. The questions became clear--what

were to be the guidelines in the intel-ligent development of a Christianhealth work? And where were theseto be found?

Ellen White's Role

For the members of the newly or-ganized Seventh-day AdventistChurch, these questions met partialsolution on Friday evening, June 5,1863. In an evening worship serviceheld in the Hilliard home at Otseg"o,Michigan, Ellen White receivedinstruction. The vision presented the "sacred

Thispoint more than any other formed thebasis for Adventism's unique con-tribution to the field of health.Proper diet, natural remedies, rest, fresh air, and a host of valuablespecific points had been (or would be)discovered by medical science. But itwas (and still is) the role of physicalhealth in aiding spiritual growth thatcaused Mrs. White's counsel to standalone. lThree years later, J.H. Waggoner

expressed it well: "As mere physio-logical and hygienic truths, [the prin-ciples of health reform] might bestudied by some at their leisure, andby others laid aside as of littleconsequence; but when placed on alevel with the grea t tru ths of thethird angel's message [see Revelation14:6-12] by the sanction of God'sSpirit, and so declared to be themeans whereby a weak people may bemade strong to overcome, and ourdiseased bodies cleansed and fittedfor translation, then it comes to us asan essential part of present truth, to bereceived with the blessing of God, orrejected at our peril.,,2As always, great principles called

for specific application. How did onego about "attending to" his health?Control the appetite, eliminating ob-jectionable foods such as meat andirritants; cultivate cleanliness; openliving quarters to the benefits offresh air and sunshine; obey naturallaw, practicing temperance in labor, eating, and drinking; avoid drugs, let-ting nature work its own healing(though assistance might be giventhrough simple remedies).sFor two and a half years the

results of this teaching went forwardwithin the ranks of the church. OnChristmas Day, 1865, new progresswas called for. The second major"health vision" indicated the needfor a denominationally owned andoperated health institution. This en-terprise was not to be merely a reflec-tion of then-existing water-cures, butrather an institution which wouldmake available to both the churchand the world the united gospel ofphysical and spiritual restoration. Forthe small group of earnest believers, the undertaking was monumental. The Western Health Reform In-

stitute opened its doors on the fifthof September, 1866. Admittedlymodest in its early days, the institu-tion opened with a ten-room facility, two physicians, two bath attendants, several "helpers," and one patient.Growth was somewhat spasmodic forthe next decade, but by 1876 the in-stitution boasted 100 beds. The stagewas set for great things. And great

things came, wrapped up in a five-foot-four-inch whirlwind named JohnHarvey Kellogg, M.D.

The Kellogg Era

It was only under some duressfrom church leaders that John con-sented to accept--for a period of oneyearuthe position of MedicalDirector. He believed he could im-prove the Health Institute, but he alsorecognized that, at only 23 years ofage--and somewhat boyish looking atthat--he might not strike others as the"Medical Director type."His premonitions proved partly

correct. As a result of his appoint-ment, 40 per cent of the patients onhand opted to seek medical helpelsewhere. Many men would find thesituation discouraging; Doctor Johndidn't seem to notice. Instead, he in-augurated a host of changes designedto improve the efficiency and imageof the institution.

A sanitariurn was aplace where peoplelearned to stay well

Not stopping to seek approval fromthe board of directors, he renamedthe Health Institute. Since no one ob-jected to its being called The BattleCreek Sanitarium, the new namestayed. There was, however, somequestion as to what the differencewas between a sanatorium, and asanitarium. The doctor explained thatthe new term would come to mean aplace where people learned to staywell. At the end of his first year, the

question somehow never came up asto whether Dr. Kellogg would con-tinue as Medical Director. He did, un-til his death in 1943, sixty-sevenyears later. It was an era that BattleCreek--and the Adventist Church--would never forget. With Kellogg's indomitable drive

and enthusiasm, the work at BattleCreek went forward quickly. He soondistinguished himself as an extremelytalented physician, and the Sanitar-ium gained a worldwide reputationfor excellence. About 1891, Dr. Kel-logg revealed to one of his assistantshis secret for staying five years aheadof the medical profession:

"He said when a new thing isbrought out in the medical world heknew from his knowledge of theSpirit of Prophecy [the writings ofEllen White; see Revelation 12:17 and19:10] whether it belonged in our sys-tem or not. If it did, he instantlyadopted it and advertised it while therest of the doctors were slowly feel-ing their way, and when they finallyadopted it he had five years the startof them."On the other hand when the

medical profession were swept offtheir feet by some new fad, if it didnot fit the light we had received[from Ellen White] he simply did nottouch it. When the doctors finally dis-covered their mistake they wonderedhow it came that Dr. Kellogg did notget caught."·Kellogg kept ahead, not only by

knowing what to accept and what toreject from outside sources, but alsoby knowing which direction to headin his own work. The counsels of El-len White served him well as atouchstone. This advantage, coupledwith his own ingenuity, led to aremarkable list of inventions andachievements:In a time when it was expected

that 15 to 20 per cent of abdominalsurgery patients would die, Dr. Kel-logg set a world record of 165 succes-sive operations without a fatality.Kellogg's interest in proper dietary

led to the development of some of ourmost familiar foods--corn flakes, peanut butter, and granola, to name afew. In all, he had part in inventingmore than seventy food items. Neverdid he profit substantially in a finan-cial way from these inventions.Speaking of peanut butter, he said itwas a product that "the world oughtto have; let everybody that wants ithave it, and make the best use of it."The doctor's interest in exercise

led to the invention of severalmechanical exercise tools. Amongthese was the universal dynamometer, used for a quarter of a century at theU.S. Naval Academy to accuratelymeasure the strength of variousmuscle groups.

The Medical Base

Having taken a look at thefruitage of the health message, let'spause a moment to note the underly-ing philosophy. We have previouslymentioned the spiritual emphasis, butwhat was the physiological, andmedical platform upon which thework was built? The writings of EllenWhite, samples of which are given inthis magazine, exemplify the basicgroundwork, yet it is enlightening tosee the concepts expressed in medical

terms, and by medical personnel. TheMedical Missionary Yearbook of 1896gives us such a glimpse:"Restora tion to health is not to be

secured by swallowing pills, regularor irregular, nor by the use of patentmedicines or nostrums, nor indeed byany other means than by the removalof the causes of the disease, and thecultivation of health. The educationof the invalid, and the training of thebody by proper regimen, judiciousdiet, suitable exercise, etc., constitutethe only means by which the cure ofchronic maladies can be effected. Toaccomplish this, all the patient'shabits of life must be controlled, andbrought to conform to such principlesas will modify his disordered propen-sities in the most effectual manner."s

The Decline of Battle Creek

In every life, some rain must fall. And it appears to be true of everygroup, cause, and organization aswell. A particularly sad portion ofAdventist medical history is the faIl-ing away of Dr. Kellogg, and the con-sequential tumult which shook BattleCreek. This unfortunate turn ofevents can be traced to two primarycauses: the Doctor's inordinate desireto control everything with which hewas connected, and his involvementwith the deceptive teachings oftheosophy. That John Kellogg was an ener-

getic, ambitious individual is obviousfrom the schedule he kept and thework he accomplished. It is also clear, from his associations with anyonewho might have been perceived as arival, that he held his own interestsparamount when it came to influenceand power in the work of the Sani-tarium. The incident of unilaterallychanging the institution's name was aforeshadowing of what was to takeplace in later years.

The milder forms oftheosophy provedfatally captivating

It is a matter of conjecture, ofcourse, but it seems likely that hisshort stature contributed to thisproblem. It was not uncommon forDr. Kellogg to point out the

16 0/11' Firm Foundatioll May, 1986

"advantages" of being short--butclose friends believed this only amask for his fond wish to be six feettall.Throughout his life he seemed

compelled to demonstra te his abili tiesby directing and dominating others, including Sanitarium employees, andthe ministers and leadership of theAdventist Church. Naturally, this wasa source of some consternation. Not,however, until this trait was mingledwith the teachings of theosophy did itresult in an open rupture of relationsbetween Dr. Kellogg and the churchof his birth.Theosophy, a philosophical "first-

cousin" of the spiritualism which hadconcerned Adventists in the 1850s,taught that man was in reality divine.Through a combination of easternmysticism and contact withnatural powers, it proposed to cul-tivate mankind's "inherent goodness."The ultimate goal was the merger ofthe soul with the great cosmic essence.Needless to say, theosophy proved

incompatible with Christianity, con-tradicting as it did the clearest andmost basic of biblical doctrines.Unfortunately, the milder forms ofthis philosophy proved fatally cap-tivating to the inquisitive mind ofJohn Harvey Kellogg. Shunning themost blatant errors, the doctor be-came beguiled with the concept of a"divine presence" pervading allforms of life, and even inanimatematter. Such notions conflict withbiblical teaching, doing away withthe clear distinction between theCreator and the created. As these doctrinal deviations

developed in the doctor's mind duringthe early years of this EllenWhite agonized over the turn ofevents. At stake were both JohnHarvey's spiritual welfare and thecontrol of the church's largest singleinstitution. In the end, it seemed thatthe damage done to the church's con-fidence in the doctor was irreparable.November 10, 1907, Dr. Kellogg'sname was dropped from the churchbooks. He had not met with them inworship for several years.Fourteen months later, twenty-

eight of the nearly 700 members ofthe Battle Creek Sanitarium Associa-tion exercised a little-noticed provi-sion in the organization's charterwhich empowered them to expel fel-low members. Included among the 128members thus dismissed from the As-sociation were all of Kellogg's prin-cipal critics within the denomina tion. For practical purposes, the BattleCreek Sanitarium ceased to be anAdventist institution. The MedicalMissionary movement staggered,

reeled--and planted itself anew inCalifornia.

Lorna Linda

In reality, the process began asearly as 1902. Ellen White wrote: "Formonths the Lord has given me in-struction that He is preparing theway for our people to obtainpossession, at Ii ttle cost, of propertieson which there are buildings that canbe utilized in our work.,,6

Ellen White hadbeen instructed thatthere was yet a thirdproperty to be found

By 1904, her words were proved.Property and buildings representingan investment of $25,000 were pur-chased by the church and convertedinto the Paradise Valley Sanitarium. The Glendale Hotel represented aninvestment of $50,000; the denomina-tion paid $12,000, and the GlendaleSanitarium was born. But still Mrs.White urged her brethren to continuethe search, for she had been in-structed that there was yet a thirdproperty to be found.Throughout the search for the two

previous properties, a large tract ofland complete with spacious hotel andworkers cottages had drawn occa-sional attention. Unfortunately, theasking price was $110,000. Consider-ing that over $150,000 had gone intothe development of the property, itwas a good deal. Still, no one familiarwith the financial condition of theCalifornia Conference could considera price like that. Some months laterwhen they checked again, the figurehad dropped to $85,000--better, butstill out of reach. In the spring of 1905, Elder John

Burden contacted the owners onceagain, asking for the bottom dollarprice. The owners, now seriously.indebted, were anxious to sell. Theprice was $40,000, firm. Burden knewthat even that sum would be a strainon the available finances. Still, hefelt that the opportunity warranted amore detailed examination of theestate. He found a main building withsixty-four rooms, four four-roomcottages, and a large recreation haIl--all in excellent condition, furnished,

steam heated, wired with electriclights, and plumbed with water froman artesian well. The seventy-sixacres included an orchard and pas-ture land. The grounds were laid outattractively with lawns, drives, and afull mile of cement sidewalk. Also in-cluded were livestock and all neces-sary farm implements. In short, everything was set up for business. All John Burden lacked was themoney.

Now Then, How Shall We Pay?

Elder Burden immediately wroteEllen White. She happened to be inWashington, D.C., at the time, al-though her home was in northernCalifornia. Since the matter wasurgent, she wired back her assurancethat his description of the propertymatched the Lord's instruction. Hercounsel was, "Secure the property byall means, so that it can be held, andthen obtain all the money you canand make sufficient payments to holdthe place. This is the very propertywe ought to have.,,7That Burden was pleased to

receive such a reply seems likely. That he was perplexed when his localconference officers wired him sayingnol to buy, is an absolute certainty. They assured him they would "takeno responsibility in the matter."

Elder Burden tookaut a personal loanof $1,000 to hold theproperty

Nevertheless the property was·obtained. Following Ellen White'scounsel--while trying not to 'offendhis immediate superiors, whose advicehe ignored--Elder Burden took out apersonal loan of $ I ,000 to hold theproperty. This amount was to benonrefundable, and would be for-feited should there be a failure tomeet any of the successive payments.Inspired by his example, local Ad-

ventists raised $4,000 to complete thedown payment. Another payment of$5,000 was due in one month, but noone really knew where the moneywould come from.A month later, they still didn't

know. The officers of the SouthernCalifornia Conference of Seventh-dayAdventists met in emergency session

with Elder Burden. There was not adollar available to meet the need, andif the payment was not made that dayit meant the loss of the money al-ready paid. Naturally there was atendency for those who had advisedagainst this venture to feel impatientwith Burden. But impatience didn'tsolve the problem.

There was atendency to feelimpatient, butimpatience didn'tsolve the problem

For want of any better ideas, itwas suggested that they wait for theday's mail. Among the letters was onefrom Atlantic City, New Jersey. Itwas from a woman unknown to all inthe meeting and contained a checkfor $5,000. As might be imagined, thebrethren came to the conclusion thatthe Lord was in favor of the project. The next month it was the same

stcry. The payment was due; thefunds weren't there. But somehowthey always managed to meet thedeadline, and Lorna Linda Sanitariumcame to be. It was an important step, for a few year's time brought the es-tablishment of the sanitarium's sisterinstitution, the College of MedicalEvangelists. This institution was in a special

sense the child of Ellen White's lastyears. She knew it to be of specialvalue to the Lord's work, and sparedno effort to provide the necessaryguidelines to nurture and protect itfrom the errors which wrought thedownfall of Battle Creek. Ellen Whitedied in 1915, not many years afterthe college came into being. It is fit-ting that we close this brief historywith a short selection of the counselsgiven to this institution in which shehad such an interest."In the work of the school main-

tain simplicity. No argument is sopowerful as is success founded uponsimplicity. And you may attainsuccess in the education of studentsas medical missionaries without amedical school that can qualifyphysicians to compete with thephysicians of the world."Let the students be given a prac-

tical education. And the less depen-dent you are upon worldly methodsof education, the better it will be forthe stud en ts. Special instruction

should be given in the art of treatingthe sick without the use of poisonousdrugs, and in harmony with the lightthat God has given. Students shouldcome forth from the school withouthaving sacrificed the principles ofhealth reform."The ed uca tion that meets the

world's standard is to be less and lessvalued by those who are seeking forefficiency in carrying the medicalmissionary work in connection withthe work of the third angel's message. They are to be educated from thestandpoint of conscience; and as theyconscientiously and faithfully followright methods in their treatment ofthe sick, these methods will come tobe recognized as preferable to themethod of nursing to which manyhave been accustomed, whichdemands the use of poisonous drugs."s"Some men do not act in the fear

of God, and they may seek to bringus into trouble by placing upon ournecks yokes that we could not consentto bear. We cannot submit to regula-tions if the sacrifice of principle isinvolved; for this would imperil thesoul's salvation."But whenever we can comply

with the law of the land without put-ting ourselves in a false position, weshould do so. Wise laws have beenframed in order to safeguard thepeople against the imposition of un-qualified physicians. These laws weshould respect, for we are ourselvesby them protected from presumptuouspretenders. Should we manifest op-position to these requirements, itwould tend to restrict the influenceof our medical missionaries."We must carefully consider what

is involved in these matters. If thereare conditions to which we could notsubscribe, we should endeavor to havethese matters adjusted so that therewould not be strong oppositionagainst our physicians. The Saviourbids us be wise as serpents and harm-less as doves."g iii

E.G. White andMedical ScienceVernon Jennings, M.S.

Can an inspired source agree withthe findings of scientific research? This question is a real one becausethe Bible upholds God as the Creatorof the heavens and the earth. It fol-lows then that all true science mustbe in harmony with any revelationthat God has been pleased to give toman. In her books Ellen G. White hasfrequently said it was shown her bythe Lord that certain health prin-ciples accepted by many health prac-ti tioners of her day were to be f 01-lowed and that others were not. It isindeed very revealing to comparehonest scientific in vestiga tion withher writings from a factual stand-point.Certainly truth has nothing to lose

by investigation. Perhaps we shallfind some of the wisdom of God byso doing. Ellen White had only threeyears of formal education and livedlong before the virus was discovered. She knew nothing about DNA orRNA molecules. Yet, she wrotematerial that is recognized by leadingscientists as a reliable guide to nutri-tion and healthful living. Dr. CliveMcCay, Ph.D., former professor ofnutrition of Cornell University wrote,"Ellen White died before modernbiochemistry... and the compositionof foods became generally known, butif people followed her plan eventoday they would be far better fedthan they are in their a ttempts to eatbad diets and then compensa te bymiracle foods."Sh e ad voca ted simple, na tura I

diets, low in fat, low in salt, wellprepared and modest in amount.Gradually she became a vegetarian, but included eggs and milk in herfood pattern.... We can read overand over the writings of such leadersas Ellen G. White, who taught the im-portance of good food for health andthe essentiality of a healthy body ifwe are to have a good sou!." Beneficial Effectof Sunlight

Even in her time when it was con-sidered hazardous to open a windowduring the care of the sick, EllenWhite was well aware of the benefitsof sunlight: "There are but few whorealize that, in order to enjoy healthand cheerfulness, they must have anabundance of sunlight, pure air, andphysical exercise. We pity littlechildren who are kept confined in-doors when the sun is shininggloriously without." Health Reformer,April, 1872.

The free use of milkand sugar taken together

should be avoided

"The pale and sickly grain-bladethat has struggled up out of the coldof early spring puts out the naturaland healthy deep green after enjoyingfor a few days the health- and life-giving rays of the sun. Go out intothe light and warmth of the glorioussun, ...and share with vegetation itslife-giving power." ibid., May, 1871.,While men have from antiquity

revered the sun as a source of life-giving energy, it was not until 1877that Downes and Blunt discovered thedramatic ability of sunlight todestroy bacteria. In 1865 Ellen Whitewrote, "Rooms that are not exposedto light and air become damp.... Theatmosphere in these rooms is poison-ous, because it has not been purifiedby light and air." How to Live, 62"Niels Finsen in 1903 won the

Nobel Prize for successfully treating

skin tuberculosis with the u'ltravioletportion of light. Studies continuedwhich revealed the potent multi-faceted effect the sun has on thehuman body. Single exposures of alarge area of the body to ultravioletlight were found to dramaticallylower elevated blood pressure, tolower abnormally high blood sugarsas found in diabetics, to decreasecholesterol in the blood stream, andto increase the white blood cells, par-ticularly the lymphocytes which arelargely responsible for the body'sability to resist disease." Zane R.Kime, M.D., Sunlight (1980), 27

Sugar And Disease

In 1890 Ellen White wrote, "Thefree use of sugar in any form tends toclog the system, and is not infre-quently a cause of disease." (ChristianTemperance and Bible Hygiene; 55) In1905 we find the following: "Far toomuch sugar is ordinarily used in food.Cakes, sweet puddings, pastries, jellies, jams, are active causes ofindigestion. Especially harmful arethe custards and puddings in whichmilk, eggs, and sugar are the chiefingredients. The free use of milk andsugar taken together should beavoided." (Ministry of Healing, 301,302) Sugar consumption has risensteadily in the United States sincethese words were written. In the June 1970 issue of the

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,Dr. Ralph R. Steinman points out thatsugar affects the hypothalamus. Thisin turn affects the parotid gland. Thecombination of influences turns on oroff the movement of fluids (stasis).Impairment of movements of fluidsin the teeth of experimental animalsfed on a high-sugar diet was observedat Lorna Linda University by a teamof scientists including Dr. Steinmanand reported in the source above. Itwas seen that diets rich in sugar mayaffect "physiological processes within

the tooth in addition to having thelocal effects of diet and microor-ganisms upon the surface of thetooth." Dental caries was reI a ted tothese "physiological processes," anddecay was seen in animals wherestasis was impaired. In 1964 there was reported a close

rela tionship between the level ofblood sugar and whi te-ccll defensi veaction against infective bacteria. Thestudy concludes: 1. "In diabeticpatients, the higher the blood-sugarlevel the lower is the phagocytic(white cell) index." 2. "In the non-diabetic subjects it thatglucose taken orally will raise theblood sugar level after 45 minuteswith a resulting decrease in thephagocytic index." (The Journal.Southern California State DentalAssociation, Vol. XXXII, No.9, Sept.,1964) Too much results in toolittle body defense against bacterialdisease.

In all our educationalinstitutions physical andmental work should have

been combined

The simultaneous intake of sucroseand milk appears to make growthhormone more active. The pancreas isstimulated in its metabolic activity, resulting in an increased need forcarbohydrates, the uptake of which isblocked by the free fatty acids frommilk. ("Role of the Combination ofSucrose and Milk in DiabetesMellitus," American Journal of ClinicalNutrition, April, 1978) The influenceof milk/sugar combinations on thegrowth hormone may explain therapid growth and overgrowth ofchildren who consume a great deal ofsweetened milk foods. Healing Power of Exercise

In 186i we find the followingstatement, "For years I have fromtime to time been shown that the sickshould be taught that it is wrong tosuspend all physical labor in order toregain health.... The view that thosewho have abused both their physical

and mental powers, or who havebroken down in either mind or body, must suspend activity in order toregain health, is a great error."Testimonies, vol. I, 555

People are continuallyeating flesh that is filledwith tuberculous andcancerous germs

There are a la rge n urn ber ofsimilar statements in Ellen White'swritings. For example, "In all oureduca tional insti tu tions physical and.mental work should have been com-bined. In vigorous physical exercise, the animal passions find a healthyoutlet and are kept in proper bounds.Healthful exercise in the open airwill strengthen the muscles, en-courage a proper circulation of blood, help to preserve the body fromdisease, and will be a great help inspirituality. For many years it hasbeen presented to me that teachersand students should unite in thiswork. This was done anciently in theschools of the prophets." Letter 116,1898, Medical Ministry, 8 IIn 1958, Paul Dudley White and

William C. Pomeroy completed an in-teresting study of 335 former athleteswhose athletic careers were primarilyin the time period 1901 to 1930. Itwas found that none of the menstudied who maintained a heavy ex-ercise regimen after retiring fromsports suffered a heart attack. On theother hand, about a third of the otherathletes analyzed had died from aheart attack. Few people in ourpopulation engage in a heavy exerciseprogram. For the majority of us, amodera te exercise program is neces-sary and adequate to aid in preven-ting heart problems. Nathan Pritikinis well known for his successful appli-cation of exercise in the treatment ofheart conditions (atherosclerosis, hypertension, and d ia betes) wi thexercise. Today, the attitude towardexercise has completely changed withmany aerobic programs, fitnesscenters, and physiotherapy healingprograms available. Many thousandsof people are now benefiting fromregular exercise programs.

Cancer And Flesh Foods

The idea that there is something inflesh foods that causes cancer was notaccepted until 1956. Before that timeit was declared by the best men ofscience that there was no cancergerm, and that cancer was not infec-tious. In 1875 Ellen White publishedthe following: "Flesh meats constitutethe principal article of food upon thetables of some families, until theirblood is filled with cancerous andscrofulous humors." Testimonies, vol.3, 563Another sta temen t in 1905 is more

specific: "People are continuallyeating flesh that is filled with tuber-culous and cancerous germs. Tuber-culosis, cancer, and other fataldiseases are thus communicated." Min-istry of Healing, 313The word "humor" is more general

than the term "germ." Humor couldinclude more than the word "germ."This appears to be the case with thecausative factors of cancer. The word"germ" as used here means some verysmall life form or particle that causesthe tuberculosis or cancer. With thisfact in mind we will now see whathas happened in the scientific worldin recent years. In 1956, Dr. Wendell Stanley,

virologist of the University ofCalifornia, declared that it was hisbelief that "viruses cause most or allhuman cancers." Dr. Stanley charac-terized viruses as "midget germs." Hetheorized that the cancer virus mightremain dormant in the human bodyand then "become active" by "aging, dietary indiscretions, hormonal im-balance, chemicals, radiation, or acombination of these stresses." Sincethen more have been discovered. Morethan 85 viruses are known to causecancers in animals. Of the 31 adeno-viruses isolated from man, twelve areknown to cause cancer in animals.More than a dozen viruses thatprimarily cause leukemia have beenidentified. Virus-like particles havebeen found in cases of dog, mouse, human, and cattle leukemia."The Epstein-Barr (EB) virus was

first discovered in 1964, in cells cul-tured from Burkitt's lymphoma, amalignant tumor of children which isat home in certain areas of Africaand New Guinea. Since 1964, therehas been accumulating evidence thatthis virus is indeed the causativeagent of Burkitt's lymphoma. Aherpes virus, indistinguishable fromthe EB virus, has been shown to causeMarek's disease, a malignant lym-phoma of chickens. The infection isalso carried in the eggs. A vacci'ne hasbeen made for chickens which

Food ForBody) Mind) and Soul

Ellen G. WhiteOur bodies are built up from the

food we eat. There is a constantbreaking down of the tissues of thebody; every movement of every organinvolves waste, and this waste isrepaired from our food. Each organof the body requires its share ofnutrition. The brain must be suppliedwith its portion; the bones, muscles, and nerves demand theirs. It is awonderful process that transforms thefood into blood, and uses this bloodto build up the varied parts of thebody; but this process is going on con-tinually, supplying with life andstrength each nerve, muscle and tissue. Those foods should be chosen that

best supply the elements needed forbuilding up the body. In this choice, appetite is not a safe guide. Throughwrong habits of eating, the appetitehas become perverted. Often it de-mands food that impairs health andcauses weakness instead of strength. We cannot safely be guided by thecustoms of society. The disease andsuffering that everywhere prevail arelargely due to popular errors inregard to diet.In order to know what are the best

foods, we must study God's originalplan for man's diet. He who createdman and who understands his needsappointed Adam his food. "Behold,"He said, "I have given you every herbyielding seed, ... and every tree, inwhich is the fruit of a tree yieldingseed; to you it shaIl be for food."(Genesis 1:29) Upon leaving Eden togain his livelihood by tilling theearth under the curse of sin, manreceive.d permission to eat also the"herb of the field." 3:18Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables

constitute the diet chosen for us byour Creator. These foods, prepared inas simple and natural a manner aspossible, are the most healthful andnourishing. They impart a strength, apower of endurance, and a vigor ofinteIlect, that are not afforded by amore complex and stimulating diet. But not all foods wholesome in

themselves are equaIly suited to our

needs under all circumstances. Careshould be taken in the selection offood. Our diet should be suited to theseason, to the climate in which welive, and to the occupation we follow. Some foods that are adapted for useat one season or in one climate arenot suited to another. So there are dif-ferent foods best suited for persons indifferent occupations. Often foodthat can be used with benefit bythose engaged in hard physical laboris unsuitable for persons of sedentarypursuits or intense mental applica-tion. God has given us an amplevariety of healthful foods, and eachperson should choose from it thethings that experience and soundjudgment prove to be best suited tohis own necessities. Ministry ofHealing, 295-297God gave our first parents the

food He designed that the race shouldeat. It was contrary to His plan tohave the life of any creature taken. There was to be no death in Eden. The fruit of the trees in the garden, was the food man's wants required.God gave man no permission to eatanimal food until after the flood.Everything had been destroyed uponwhich man could subsist, and there-fore the Lord in their necessity gaveNoah permission to eat of the cleananimals which he had taken with himinto the ark. But animal food was notthe most healthful article of food forman. The people who lived before the

flood ate animal food and gratifiedtheir lusts until their cup of iniquitywas fuIl, and God cleansed the earthof its moral poIlution by a flood. Then the third dreadful curse restedupon the earth. The first curse waspronounced upon the posterity ofAdam and upon the earth, because ofdisobedience. The second curse cameupon the ground after Cain slew hisbrother Abel. The third most dreadfulcurse from God came upon the earthafter the flood. After the flood the people ate

largely of animal food. God saw that

the ways of man were corrupt, andthat he was disposed to exalt himselfproudly against his Creator and tofollow the inclinations of his ownheart. And He permitted that long-lived race to eat animal food toshorten their sinful lives. Soon afterthe flood the race began to rapidlydecrease in size, and in length ofyears. Counsels on Diet and Foods, 373When God led the children of Is-

rael out of Egypt, it was His purposeto establish them in the land ofCanaan a pure, happy, healthy people.Let us look at the means by which Hewould accomplish this. He subjectedthem to a course of discipline, which, had it been cheerfully foIl owed, would ha ve resulted in good, both tothemseives and to their posterity. Heremoved flesh food from them in agreat measure. He had granted themflesh in answer to their clamors, justbefore reaching Sinai, but it was fur-nished for only one day. God mighthave provided flesh as easily asmanna, but a restriction was placedupon the people for their good. It wasHis purpose to supply them with foodbetter suited to their wants than thefeverish diet to which many of themhad been accustomed in Egypt. Theperverted appetite was to be broughtinto a more healthy state, that theymight enjoy the food originallyprovided for man,--the fruits of theearth, which God gave to Adam andEve in Eden.Had they been wiIling to deny ap-

petite in obedience to His restrictions, feebleness and disease would havebeen unknown among them. Their de-scendants would have possessedphysical and mental strength. Theywould have had clear perceptions oftruth and duty, keen discrimination, and sound judgment. But they wereunwilling to submit to God's require-ments, and they failed to reach thestandard He had set for them, and toreceive the blessings that might havebeen theirs. They murmured at God'srestrictions, and lusted after thefleshpots of Egypt. God let them have

flesh, but it proved a curse to them.Counsels on Diet and Foods, 377, 378Upon their settlement in Canaan,

the Israelites were permitted the useof animal food, but under carefulrestrictions, which tended to lessenthe evil results. The use of swine'sflesh was prohibited, as also of otheranimals and of birds and fish whoseflesh was pronounced unclean. Of themeats permitted, the eating of the fatand the blood was strictly forbidden.Only such animals could be used

for food as were in good condition. No creature that was torn, that haddied of itself or from which theblood had not been carefully drained, could be used for food. ibid., 374, 375Could you know just the nature of

the meat you eat, could you see theanimals when living from which the'flesh is taken when dead, you woul<:iturn with loathing from your fleshmeats. The very animals whose fleshyou eat, are frequently so diseasedthat, if left alone, they would die ofthemselves; but while the breath oflife is in them, they are killed andbrought to market. You take directlyinto your system humors and poisonof the worst kind, and yet you realizeit not.Often animals are taken to market

and sold for food, when they are sodiseased that their owners fear tokeep them longer. And some of theprocesses of fattening them formarket produce disease. Shut away

from the light and pure air, breathingthe atmosphere of filthy stables, per-haps fattening on decaying food, theentire body soon becomes con-taminated with foul matter.Animals are often transported long

distances and subjected to great suf-fering in reaching a market. Takenfrom the green pastures and travelingfor weary miles over the hot, dustyroads, or crowded into filthy cars, feverish and exhausted, often formany hours deprived of food and wa-ter, the poor creatures are driven totheir death, that human beings mayfeast on the carcasses. ibid., 385The meat diet is the serious ques-

tion. Shall human beings live on theflesh of dead animals? The answer, from the light that God has given is,No, decidedly No. Health reform insti-tutions should educate on thisquestion. Physicians who claim to un-derstand the human organism oughtnot to encourage their patients to sub-sist on the flesh of dead animals. They should point out the increase ofdisease in the animal kingdom. Thetestimony of examiners is that veryfew animals are free from disease, and that the practice of eating largelyof meat is contracting disease of allkinds,--cancers, tumors, scrofula, tuberculosis, and numbers of likeaffections. ibid., 388Those who use flesh meats freely,

do not always have an uncloudedbrain and an active intellect, because

the use of the flesh of animals tendsto cause a grossness of body, and tobenumb the finer sensibilities of themind.God wants the perceptive faculties

of His people to be clear and capableof hard work. But if you are livingon a flesh diet, you need not expect'that your mind will be fruitful. Thethoughts must be cleansed; then theblessing of God will rest upon Hispeople. ibid., 389God has furnished man with abun-

dant means for the gratification ofan unperverted appetite. He hasspread before him the products of theearth,--a bountiful variety of foodthat is palatable to the taste and.nutritious to the system. Of these ourbenevolent heavenly Father says wemay freely eat. Fruits, grains, andvegetables, prepared in a simple way, free from spice and grease of allkinds, make, with milk or cream, themost healthful diet. They impartnourishment to the body, and give apower of endurance and a vigor ofintellect that are not produced by astimula ting diet.In grains, fruits, vegetables, and

nuts are to be found all the food ele-ments that we need. If we will cometo the Lord in simplicity of mind, Hewill teach us how to prepare whole-some food free from the taint offlesh meat. ibid., 92 II

Health And The Dinner Table

saving would be staggering if dia-betes was prevented and treated atthe "dinner table." Currently 113.5billion dollars is spent in diabeticcare each year.Even though these opening lines

may have appealed to our materialis-tic natures, the avoidance of pain, suffering and death is the higher mo-tive that causes us to take positive ac-tion against these diseases. Few healthcare professionals are not spirituallymoved by the pitiful sight of thoseravaged by these unmerciful diseases.Blindness, paralysis, gangrenouslimbs, and wasting bodies are literallystrewn across the landscape ofAmerica's hospitals and homes.Sadly, our misguided empathy for

these victims of the "dinner table" isdirected toward more machinery, sur-geries, and drugs to treat the symp-toms resulting from these diseases. Ina blind rush to be the first to find a

, obvious. Who would even think that... the solution for these very complex

problems would lie at our verydoorstep, yes, even the home dining

ner table, it is the dining table ofthe fast-food and convenience-- food shops, the school

cafeterias and the eveningdining spots of America. An increasing number ofAmericans rarely eat athome. Personal ha bi ts areshifting toward havingsomeone else slowly kill usthrough the modality offood. But the respon-sibility of understanding

each of us individually. In thefinal analysis, the consumer's

desires still dictate the industry'sproducts. If you don't buy it, theywon't make it. At least that is the wayit used to be. The law of supply anddemand dictated what products wereproduced. Today, the food industry isspending unprecedented sums ofmoney to create a need or a marketfor the food products they havechosen to create. Last year, the fif-teen largest fast-food providers spent$750 million for TV advertisingalone. These dollars educated yourchildren to demand the low-fiber,high-fat, salt and protein items thatthese companies create. To win thewar against this subversive activity, authoritative and attractive educa-tional formats must be presented tochild and oldster alike. Healtheducation, however, does not have aprofit incentive to any commercialsegment of our economy, except thosethat pay the bill for the outrageoushealth costs. Increasingly, the federalgovernment is where the "dollarstops." But "politics" make it dif-ficult for our government to do whatis so obvious. How can an organi-

let's consider some sta tis tics.causes twenty percent of all thedeaths in America today. Thedirect costs to the nation are out-lined in the following paragraphs.Recently, the National Re-

search Counsel summarizedyears of scientific studiesby concluding that ninety

per cent of all cancerrelated to environmental fac-tors including diet. Fortyper cent of cancer in men isrelated to diet and sixtyper cent in women. Lastyear over 984,400 Ameri- l2L;Z2;

cans died from heart dis-ease and strokes. The finan-cial loss to America is estimatedto be 78.6 billion dollars in 1986. TheNation Institutes of Health ConsensusReport in 1985 clearly linked "dinnertable" cholesterol and heart diseaseafter listening to testimony from aninternational array of leading scien-tists. Despite the protests and coun-tercharges of other scien tists sup-ported by the American dairy andmeat industry, the evidence for therelationship between diet and thecarnage caused by heart disease isirrefu ta ble.Hypertension, the disease that af-

fects twenty per cent of allAmericans at a cost of 1.6 billion dol-lars each year, has been clearly linkedwith excess salt and fat intake amongother lifestyle factors. Despite thehope that industry would voluntarilydevelop less offensive food products,American food processors continue topour literally tons of salt into foodthat already is too high in fat andlow in nutrition. Eighty per cent ofall American diabetics have the typeof diabetes that would respond to dietchanges, according to recent researchfrom many medical centers. The cost

za tion that is still subsidizing thedeath-dealing industries of tobaccoand alcohol take meaningful stepsagainst the food industry's failings? Some hope is emerging from theemployer. As more corporations be-come self-insured and more directlyresponsible for health-care cost ofemployees, the motive for educationtoward better health practices be-comes grea ter. With all of this talk about what

"they" should be doing, what can I donow at "my dinner table"? Today!Carefully done population studies

have shown us that my family candecrease the risk of colon, prostate, and breast cancer by avoiding highcholesterol and saturated fats. Sincecholesterol is found only in animalproducts, I could take a first steptoward reducing the cancer risk byhaving "meatless and animal-less"days. Eggs seem to be firmly en-trenched as an integral part ofAmerican cuisine. But it is surprising'how many recipes turn out wellwithout the ever-present egg. Cheeseis often used in "vegetarian dishes,"but the effect of cholesterol andsaturated fat is still there and so isthe risk of cancer. Experimentingwith grains, legumes, and root foodsas entrees can be an exciting chal-lenge for good nutrition and cancerpreven tion.Recent scientific work from the

University of Kentucky has revolu-tionized the care of diabetics. Formany years, dietitians and physiciansadvocated a low carbohydrate andmoderately high protein and fat dietfor diabetics. With red faces, we nowrealize that we actually have beenadding "insult to injury." The extrafat was hampering the effectivenessof insulin to drive the sugar from theblood in to the cell, thus causing theblood sugar to remain elevated. Nowwe know that a diet high in "complexcarbohydrates"·-which just meansgood, plain, whole foods as Godgrows them-is the very best diet foradult-onset diabetic patients. AtHartland Health Center, we have seenpatients who had required as much as100 units of insulin per day to controltheir diabetes, able to stop using in-sulin altogether when this diet wascoupled with exercise, weight loss, and stress control. While performing peripheral vas-

cular surgery, we have seen the fattygreasy deposits in patients withatherosclerosis. It is this accumulationthat leads to heart attack, stroke, andaneurysms. As these fatty deposits arestripped from the artery wall or by-passed with synthetic graft material, there is no question where they camefrom. These deposits look and feel

like the greasy foods that produce thebaleful results of artery disease. Someportions of plaque resemble marbledsteak and other portions resemble the"crunchy" coa ting of fish and chips. It is a wonder that such an obviousrelationship between diet and heartdisease would ever be debated. It is,though, because of our unwillingnessto change and the massive financialinvestment in the "fat" industry.

The Joy of Getting Off Those An-tihypertensive Drugs might be the titleof a best seller written by many ofour patients that have been able tokick this drug habit by choosing touse less salt and fewer calories. Saltrestriction and the shedding of as fewas ten pounds have made it possiblefor many of our patients to stop theirmedication. In fact, we are forced tolower medication doses to avoid bloodpressures dropping too low. Most hy-pertension is definitely a "dinner-table" disease. The food industryseems unconsciously bent on humandestruction as it pours salt into every-thing from soups to lunch meats. Thesalt intake of Americans has steadilyincreased until today we use fifteenpounds of salt each year per person. You can help yourself greatly byreading the labels on processed foodproducts. Here are a few surprises.Remember 1000-1500 mg. of sodiumwould be a healthy daily intake. Oneserving of Campbells tomato soup--1050 mg., one cup of Del Monte greenbeans-925 mg., Morton king-sizeturkey dinner-2567 mg., McDonaldBig Mac n l5l0 mg., even 1/2 cup ofJell-O Chocolate pudding-480 mg.Despite the excessive use of salt, wecannot look upon this essential ele-ment as a "poison." No other elementis more critical to the cellular func-tion of the body. For this reason ourCreator placed plenty of sodium inthe natural foods and designed thekidney to carefully recycle thesodium ion.You may have seen a dietary pat-

tern developing as we have discussedthese selected high-risk, high-costdiseases: diabetes, cancer, heartdisease, and hypertension. A dietcomposed primarily of a variety offruits, nuts, vegetables and grainswould naturally be high in nutrition, fiber, and energy, and low in fats andcholesterol. The balance of essentialfats, proteins, vitamins, carbohy-drates, and minerals would preventand treat these main killers. Withoutany great effort to weigh, balance, exchange, or select, this diet wouldeliminate the diseases that modernmedicine is struggling against. This knowledge of the importance

of diet is not new. When God led thebudding nation of Israel out of Egyp-

tian slavery 4000 years ago, He wasable to maintain their health by theuse of a vegetarian diet and otherhygienic health practices. In thislarge population "experiment," withover one million people for fortyyears, the only disease epidemic thatoccurred was during their rebellionagainst the food that God had pro-vided for them. Their demands formeat were met, and the death toll wasso great that they named the siteKibroth Hattaavah, which means"graves of craving."At the beginning of this century,

Ellen White stated plainly, "Many aresuffering, and many are going intothe grave, because of the indulgenceof appetite. They eat what suits theirperverted taste, thus weakening thedigestive organs and injuring theirpower to assimila te the food tha t is tosustain life." "Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the dietchosen for us by our Creator. Thesefoods, prepared in as simple andnatural a manner as possible, are themost healthful and nourishing.[and] contain all the nutritiveproperties necessary to make goodblood." Counsels on Diet and Foods,123, 313"The eating of flesh meats has

made a poor quality of blood andflesh. Your systems are in a state ofinflammation, prepared to take ondisease. You are liable to acute at-tacks of disease and to sudden deathbecause you do not possess thestrength of constitution to rally andresist disease." (Testimonies, vol. 2, 61)This is certainly an accurate descrip-tion of the present epidemics of heartdisease and cancer.Think of it. You can do more to

keep your family healthy by provid-ing good nutrition than the billiondollar health care industry. And isn'tthat just the way that God wouldhave it? His ways are always sensibleand straightforward. He developedthe nutrition sources of the vegetablekingdom and then created our digest-ive tract that carefully extracts andcreates health-giving elements. Manhas tried to develop all sorts of"cleansers," supplements and irri-gations, but none can compare withthe highly sophisticated "wisdom" ofthe organs of the body. It would bewise to follow His diet plan for goodhealth. He is so pleased with His crea-tion of food and man that He is ask-ing to dine with us. "Here I am! Istand at the door and knock. If any.man hear My voice and open thedoor, I will go in and eat with him,and he with Me." (See Revelation3:20) Only the best food for theCrea tor! Ii!

Physician-The

The true physician is an educator. He recognizes his responsibility, notonly to the sick who are under hisdirect care, but also to the communityin which he lives. He stands as aguardian of both physical and moralhealth. It is his endeavor not only toteach right methods for the treatmentof the sick, but to encourage righthabits of living, and to spread aknowledge of right principles.

Need of Health Education

Education in health principles was, never more needed than now. Not-withstanding the wonderful progressin so many lines relating to the com-forts and convenience of life, even tosanitary matters and to the treatmentof disease, the decline in physicalvigor and power of endurance isalarming. It demands the attention ofall who have at heart the well-beingof their fellow men.Our artificial civilization is en-

couraging evils destructive of soundprinciples. Custom and fashion are atwar with nature. The practices theyenjoin, and the indulgences theyfoster, are steadily lessening bothphysical and mental strength, andbringing upon the race an intolerableburden. Intemperance and crime, dis-

ease and wretchedness, are every-where.Many transgress the laws of health

through ignorance, and they needinstruction. But the greater numberknow better than they do. They need,to be impressed with the importanceof making their knowledge a guide oflife. The physician has many oppor-tunities both of imparting a knowl-edge of health principles and ofshowing the importance of puttingthem in practice. By right instructionhe can do much to correct evils thatare working untold harm.A practice that is laying the foun-

dation of a vast amount of diseaseand of even more serious evils is thefree use of poisonous drugs. When at-tacked by disease, many will not takethe trouble to search out the cause oftheir illness. Their chief anxiety is torid themselves of pain and inconven-ience. So they resort to patentnostrums, of whose real propertiesthey know little, or they apply to aphysician for some remedy to coun-teract the result of their misdoing, but with no thought of making achange in their unhealthful habits. Ifimmediate benefit is not realized, another medicine is tried, and thenanother. Thus the evil continues.People need to be ta ugh t tha t

drugs do not cure disease. It is truethat they sometimes afford presentrelief, and the patient appears to'recover as the result of their use; thisis because nature has sufficient vitalforce to expel the poison and to cor-rect the conditions that caused thedisease. Health is recovered in spiteof the drug. But in most cases thedrug only changes the form and loca-tion of the disease. Often the effectof the poison seems to be overcomefor a time, but the results remain inthe system and work great harm atsome later period.

By the use of poisonous drugs, many bring upon themselves lifelongillness, and many lives are lost thatmight be saved by the use of naturalmethods of healing. The poisons con-tained in many so-called remediescreate habits and appetites that meanruin to both soul and body. Many ofthe popular riostrums called patentmedicines, and even some of thedrugs dispensed by physicians, act apart in laying the foundation of theliquor habit, the opium habit, themorphine habit, that are so terrible acurse to society. The only hope of better things is

in the education of the people inright principles. Let physicians teachthe people that restorative power is

not in drugs, but in nature. Disease isan effort of nature to free the systemfrom c.Qnditions that result from aviolation of the laws of health. Incase of sickness, the cause should beascertained. Unhealthful conditionsshould be changed, wrong habitscorrected. Then nature is to be as-'sisted in her effort to expel im-purities and to re-establish right con-ditions in the system.

Natural Remedies

Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use ofwater, trust in divine power-theseare the true remedies. Every personshould have a knowledge of nature'sremedial agencies and how to applythem. It is essential both to under-stand the principles involved in thetreatment of the sick and to have a,practical training that will enable onerightly to use this knowledge. The use of natural remedies

requires an amount of care and effortthat many are not willing to give.Nature's process of healing and up-building is gradual, and to the im-patient it seems slow. The surrenderof hurtful indulgences requiressacrifice. But in the end it will befound that nature, untrammeled, doesher work wisely and well. Those whopersevere in obedience to her laws, will reap the reward in health ofbody and health of mind.Too little attention is generally

given to the. preservation of health. Itis far better to prevent disease thanto know how to treat it whencontracted. It is the duty of everyperson, for his own sake, and for thesake of humanity, to inform himselfin regard to the laws of life and con-scientiously to obey them. All need tobecome acquainted with that mostwonderful of all organisms, thehuman body. They should understandthe function of the various organsand the dependence of one uponanother for the healthy action of all. They should study the influence of'the mind upon the body, and of thebody upon the mind, and the laws bywhich they are governed.

Training For Life's Conflict

We cannot be too often remindedthat health does not depend on·chance. It is a result of obedience tolaw. This is recognized by the con-testants in athletic games and trialsof strength. These men make the mostcareful preparation. They submit tothorough training and strict disci-pline. Every physical habit is care-fully regulated. They know thatneglect, excess, or carelessness, which

weakens or cripples any organ orfunction of the body, would ensuredefeat. How much more important is such

carefulness to ensure success in theconflict of life. It is not mimic battlesin which we are engaged. We arewaging a warfare upon which hangeternal results. We have unseenenemies to meet. Evil angels are striv-ing for the dominion of every humanbeing. Whatever injures the health, not only lessens physical vigor, buttends to weaken the mental and moralpowers. Indulgence in any unhealth-ful practice makes it more difficultfor one to discriminate between rightand wrong, and hence more difficultto resist evil. It increases the dangerof failure and defeat."They which run in a race run all,

but one receiveth the prize." (I Corin-thians 9:24) In the warfare in whichwe are engaged, all may win who willdiscipline themselves by obedience toright principles. The practice of theseprinciples in the details of life is toooften looked upon as unimportant-amatter too trivial to demand atten-tion. But in view of the issues atstake, nothing with which we have todo is small. Every act casts its weightinto the scale that determines life'svictory or defeat. The Scripture bidsus, "So run, that ye may obtain."[Verse 24]With our first parents, intemperate'

desire resulted in the loss of Eden.Temperance in all things has more todo with our restoration to Eden thanmen realize.Pointing to the self-denial prac-

ticed by the contestants in the ancientGreek games, the apostle Paul writes:"Every man that striveth for the mas-tery is temperate in all things. Nowthey do it to obtain a corruptiblecrown; but we an incorruptible. Itherefore so run, not as uncertainly;so fight I; not as one that beateth theair: but I keep under my body, andbring it into subjection: lest that byany means, when I have preached toothers, I myself should be acastaway." [Verses 25-27]The progress of reform depends

upon a clear recognition of fun-damental truth. While, on the' onehand, danger lurks in a narrow philos-ophyand a hard, cold orthodoxy; onthe other hand there is great dangerin a careless liberalism. The founda-tion of all enduring reform is the lawof God. We are to present in clear dis-tinct lines the need of obeying thislaw. Its principles must be kept be-fore the people. They are as everlast-ing and inexorable as God Himself.Ministry of Healing, 125-129

Subject: Problems With Eyolution,The sun's radiation applies an

outward force on small particles or-biting the sun. Particles less than.00001 centimeters (about 4/100,000inches) in diameter should have been!blown out of the solar system ifsolar system were billions of yearsold. These particles are still orbitingthe sun. The obvious and correct ,on-clusion is that the solar system mustbe much younger than a billion years.

Since 1836 over 100 differentobservers at the Royal GreenwichObservatory and the US Naval Obser-vatory have made direct visualmeasurements which show that thediameter of the sun is shrinking at arate of about one tenth of one per.cent each century (or about five feetper hour). Furthermore, records ofsolar eclipses indicate that this rapidshrinkage has been going on for atleast the past 400 years. See"Analysisof Historical Data Suggests Sun IsShrinking," Physics Today, September,1979, 17-19Using the most conservative data,

one must conclude that had the sunexisted a mere million years' ago, itwould have been so large that itwould have heated the earth so muchthat life could not have survived. Yetevolutionists say that a million yearsago all the present forms of life wereessentially as they are now, havingcompletcd their evolution that begana thol/sand million years ago.

The sun's gravitational field acts as agiant vacuum cleaner which sweepsup about 100,000 tons of micro-meteoroids per day. If the solar sys-tem were just 10,000 years old, nomicrometeoroids should remain sincethere is no significant source ofreplenishment. A large disk shapedcloud of these particles is orbiting thesun. Conclusion: the solar system is

than 10,000 years old. See Paul M.Steidl, The Earth. the Stars, and theBible, Grand Rapids: Baker BookHouse, 1979, 60, 61

And ItsDisease

In past generations, if mothers hadinformed themselves in regard to thelaws of their being, they would haveunderstood tha t their consti tu tionalstrength, as well as the tone of theirmorals, and their mental faculties, would in a grea t measure be repre-sented in their offspring. Their ig-norance upon this subject, where somuch is involved, is criminal. Manywomen should never have becomemothers. Their blood was filled withscrofula, transmitted to them fromtheir parents, and increased by theirgross manner of living. The intellecthas been brought down, and enslavedto serve the animal appetites.Children born of such parents havebeen great sufferers, and of but littleuse to society. It has been one of the greatest

causes of degeneracy in precedinggenerations, that wives and mothers, who otherwise would have had a bene-ficial influence upon society in rais-ing the standard of morals, have beenlost to society through the multi-plicity of home cares, because of thefashiona ble, health-destroying man-ner of cooking, and also in con-sequence of too frequent child-bearing. The mother has been com-pelled to endure needlcss suffering, her constitution has failed, and herintellect has become weakened by sogreat a draft upon her vital resources. Her offspring suffer because of herdebility; and through her inability toeducate them society has thrown uponit a class poorly fitted to be of anybenefit. If these mothers had given birth to

but few children, and had been care-ful to live upon such food as wouldpreserve physical health and mentalstrength so that the moral and intel-lectual might predominate over theanimal, they could ha ve so educa tedtheir children for usefulness thatthey would have been bright orna-ments to society. If, in past genera tions, parents

had, with firmness of purpose, keptthe body servant to the mind, andhad not allowed the intellectual to beenslaved by the animal passions, therewould be in this age a different orderof beings upon the earth. And if themother, before the birth of her off-spring, had always possessed self-control, realizing that she was givingthe stamp of character to futuregenerations, the present state ofsociety would not be so depreciated incharacter.Every woman about to become a

mother, whatever may be hersurroundings, should encourage con-stantly a happy, contented disposi-tion, knowing that for all her effortsin this direction she will be repaidtenfold in the physical, as well as inthe moral, character of her offspring.Nor is this all. By habit she can ac-custom herself to cheerful thinking, and thus encourage a happy state ofmind, and cast a cheerful reflectionof her own happiness of spirit uponher family, and those with whom sheassociates. And in a very great degreeher physical health will be improved.A force will be imparted to the lifesprings; the blood will not movesluggishly, as would be the case if she

were to yield to despondency andgloom. Her mental and moral healthare invigorated by the buoyancy ofher spirits. The power of the will canresist impressions of the mind, andwill prove a grand soother of thenerves. Children who are robbed ofthat vitality which they should haveinherited from their parents shouldhave the utmost care. By close atten-tion to the laws of their being, amuch better condition may beestablished. The period in which the infant

receives its nourishment from itsmother is critical. Many a mother, while nursing her infant, has beenpermitted to overwork, heating herblood over the cook-stove; and thenursling has been seriously affected, not only with fevered nourishmentfrom the mother's breast, but itsblood has been poisoned by the un-healthy diet of the mother, which hasfevered her whole system, thereby af-fecting the food of the infant. Theinfant is also affected by the condi-tion of the mother's mind. If she isunhappy, easily agitated, irritable, giving vent to outbursts of passion, the nourishment the infant receivesfrom its mother will be inflamed, of-ten producing colic, spasms, and, insome instances, causing convulsions,or fits. The character also of the child is

more Or less affected by the nature ofthe nourishment received from themother. How important, then, that themother, while nursing her infantshould, preserve a happy state ofmind, having perfect control of herown spirit. By thus doing, the food ofthe child is not injured, and the calm, self -possessed course the motherpursues in the treatment of her childhas much to do in molding the mindof the infant. If it is nervous, andeasily agitated, the mother's carefulunhurried manner will have a sooth-ing and correcting influence, and thehealth of the infant will be muchimproved.Infants have been greatly abused

by improper treatment. If fretful, they have generally been fed to keepthem quiet, when, in most cases, receiving too much food, made in-jurious by the wrong habits of themother, was the very cause of theirfretfulness. More food only made thematter worse; for the stomach was al-ready overloaded.Children are generally brought up

from the cradle to indulge the appe-tite, and are taught that they live toeat. The mother does much towardthe formation of the character of herchildren in their childhood. She canteach them to control the appetite, orshe can teach them to indulge the

Page 27: Our Firm Foundation 1986.pdfOur Firm Foundation The 7th Day Sabbath Immutable Law of God Non-ImmortalityoftheSoul Three Angels' Messages The Sanctuary Vol. 1, No.7 May 1986 Special

appetite, and become gluttons. Themother often plans to accomplish acertain amount of work during theday; and when the children troubleher, instead of taking time to soothetheir little sorrows, and divert them, somethin'g is given them to eat, tokeep them still. This accomplishes thepurpose for a short time, bu t even-tually makes things worse. Thechildren's stomachs are pressed withfood when they have not the leastwant of food. All that is required is alittle of the mother's time andattention. But she regards her time al-together too precious to devote to theamusement of her children. Perhapsto arrange her house in a tastefulmanner for visitors to praise, and tohave her food cooked in fashionablestyle, are, with her, higher considera-tions than happiness and health ofher children.Intemperance in eating and in

labor debilitates the parents, oftenmaking them nervous, and disqualify-ing them rightly to discharge theirduty to their children. Three times aday parents and children gatheraround the table loaded with avariety of fashionable foods. Themerits of each dish have to be tested.Perhaps the mother has toiled till sheis heated and exhausted, and is not ina condition to take even the simplest'food till she has first had a period ofrest. The food she wearied herself inpreparing is wholly unfit for her atany time, but especially taxes the di-gestive organs when the blood isheated and the system exhausted. Those who have thus persisted inviola ting the laws of their being havebeen compelled to pay the penalty atsome period of their life. There are ample reasons why there

are so many nervous women in theworld, complaining of dyspepsia, withits train of evils. The cause has beenfollowed by the effect. It is impos-sible for intemperate persons to bepatient. They must first reform badhabits, and learn to live healthfully;then it will not be difficult for themto be patient. Many do not seem tounderstand the relation the mind sus-tains to the body. If the system isderanged by improper food, the brainand nerves are affected, and slightthings annoy those who are thusafflicted, Little difficulties are -tothem troubles mountain high. Personsthus situated are unfitted properly totrain their children. Their life will bemarked with extremes; sometimesthey will be very indulgent, at othertimes severe, censoring for trifles thatdeserve no notice. IiiReview and Herald, July 25, 1899

"There are many ways of practic-ing the healing art, but there is onlyone way that heaven approves. God'sremedies are the simple agencies ofnature, that will not tax or debilitatethe system through their powerfulproperties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity oflife, and a firm trust in God, areremedies for the want of whichthousands are dying, yet theseremedies are going out of date be-cause their skillful use requires workthat the people do not appreciate.Fresh air, exercise, pure water, andclean, sweet premises, are within thereach of all with but little expense;but drugs are expensive, both in theoutlay of means and the effectproduced upon the system."Testimonies, vol. 5, 433This statement given by God

through inspiration was not intendedto make God's people the tail when itcomes to the healing art. Absolutelynot! On the contrary, it was giventhat His people would be the head.i'The light that God has given in

Simple

And

SureDavid Ramsey

Our opening statement, asremarkably simple as it may sound isactually quite profound in itssimplicity; for within its lines lies awealth of valuable instruction for thebenefit of all mankind. However, inthis age of increased knowledge andscientific invention, simple things arenot popular; they are passed by with-out much notice, discarded to thegraveyard of old relics.Unfortunately, this policy has

been applied to the use of naturalremedies. Unfortunate, I say, not onlybecause of their tremendous benefitin our battle with disease, their easeof application and their economy, butbeca use the God of Rea ven, theCreator of all the universe, gave themto us as a blessing and has promisedto make them effectual if we willonly follow His plans. It shouldn'treally surprise us that the things bestfor us in life are simple. God has al-ways worked in simple ways to ac-complish a great work."The simple act of blowing a blast

upon the trumpet by the army ofJoshua around Jericho, and byGideon's little band about the hostsof Midian, was made effectual, through the power of God, to over-throw the might of His enemies. Themost complete system that men haveever devised, apart from the powerand wisdom of God, will prove afailure, while the most unpromisingmethods will succeed when divinelyappointed, and entered upon withhumility and faith." Patriarchs andProphets, 554A close examination of the list of

remedies in the opening statementwill reveal that God's methods are notonly remedial, but preventive. Itwasn't in the plan of a loving Fatherthat His children should suffer. Hetells us in 3 John 2, "Beloved, I wishabove all things that thou mayest

by our own sins we have brought onourselves much unnecessary suffering."When Christ healed disease, He

warned many of the afflicted ones,'Sin no more, lest a worse thing comeunto thee.' John 5:14. Thus He taughtthat they had brought disease upon, themselves by transgressing the lawsof God, and that health could bepreserved only by obedience." Mini-stry of Healing, 113"It is just as much sin to violate

the laws of our being as to break oneof the ten commandments, for wecannot do either without breakingGod's law." Healthful Living, 21Here we see that obedience needs

to be the watchword of our lives. Ifwe want God's blessings, we mustcomply with the conditions He has setforth for our receiving them. One caneasily see that the focus of our healthprograms needs to be preven tion."Too little attention is generally

given to the preservation of health. Itis far better to prevent disease thanto know how to treat it when con-tracted. It is the duty of every person, for his own sake, and for the sake ofhumanity, to inform himself inregard to the laws of life and con-scientiously to obey them." Ministryof Healing, 128However, in cases where sickness

does occur, we are certainly not to beslack in our -dealing with it. We first

need to understand that "disease is aneffort of nature to free the systemfrom conditions that result from aviolation of the laws of health."(ibid., 127) The next step followslogically: "In cases of sickness, thecause should be ascertained. Un-healthful conditions should bechanged, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in hereffort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in thesystem." ibid., 127

Natural means, usedin accordance withGod's will, bringabout supernatural

results

How "nature is to be assisted"brings each person to the point ofdecision, a decision which really isn't.that difficult to make if Ephesians5:10 ("proving what is acceptableunto the Lord") has become a guidingprinciple in our lives. When it comesto the treatment of illness, our open-ing statement points out the directionwe should pursue."Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness,

rest, exercise, proper diet, the use ofwater, trust in divine power--these

During health, the blood vessels ofthe body are not of a constant, un-varying size. They are in a state ofcontinual change. They become larger-dilate; then smaller-contract. Thesealternate changes occur about onceevery minute. As contraction occurs, the blood is forced onward. Whendilation takes place, they again fil1with blood, which is sent onward bythe next contraction. This pumpingaction of the blood vessels is sopowerful and is such an importantfactor in the circulation that thesmaller blood vessels, as a system, have been called the peripheral heartor skin heart. If the vasomotor nerves-which

control this dilating and contractingof the blood vessels-become para-lyzed, the blood vessels dilate andremain dilated. This dilation causesthem to be overdistended with blood, which has only the force of theheartbeat to push it along. The slowercirculation which results causes theaffected part of the body to become

It is essential both to under-stand the principles involved in thetreatment of the sick and to have apractical training that will enable onerightly to use this knowledge." ibid.,127Someone may question, "These

remedies are so simple, isn't Godmerely saying, just have faith?" Yes,faith is necessary, but in combinationwith works."Natural means, used in accord-

ance with God's will, bring aboutsupernatural results. We ask for amiracle, and the Lord directs themind to some simple remedy. We askto be kept from the pestilence thatwalketh in darkness, tha t is stalkingwith such power through the world;we are then to cooperate with God,observing the laws of health and life.Having done all that we possibly can,we are to keep asking in faith forhealth and strength. We are to eatthat food which will preserve thehealth of the body."God gives us no encouragement

that He will do for us what we can dofor ourselves. Natural laws are to beobeyed. We cannot disregard the lawsof nature without disregarding thelaws of God. We cannot expect theLord to work a miracle for us whilewe neglect the simple remedies Hehas provided for our use, which aptlyand opportunely applied, will bring

dusky in color and cold. This condi-tion is what occurs in paralysis suchas follows a stroke. Somewhat thesame condition is found in nervousexhaustion, indigestion, infectiousdiseases, and fevers. The failure ofthe blood vessels to perform theirpart of the work of the circulationthrows an added burden on the heart. For this reason, the heart works un-der much stress and at a disadvan-tage, but may not itself be at fault. There are many ways in which the

work done by the peripheral heartmay be increased in efficiency or re-stored to normal when deranged. Allsorts of applications to the skin excitecontractions in the blood vessels sothat the usual rhythmic changes insize occur more rapidly or are ofgreater extent. Each kind of appli-cation, however, is conducive to dif-ferent degrees of contraction ordilation, and so to different endresults. When cold water is applied to the

skin for a brief span of time,--and

impossible to cover all the remediesoutlined in the opening quotation. Sorather than to do injustice to them allby briefly mentioning each one, Iwould like to direct your attention towater."Water as a remedial agent is

unsurpassed, approaching tha t of auniversal remedy in its various ap-plications of steam, hot water, cold'water and ice. It can be usedfully in more areas than any otherremedy. Its very abundance, availa-bility, economy and ease of applica-tion make it ..pne of the blessings ofheaven for application as a simpleand rational remedy. It is the univer-sal solvent, nonirritating, and spe-cially designed by the Creator for usein healing. It is able to give up itsheat rapidly, but does not cool toorapidly for convenience. It has a highheat capacity and a high latent heatcapacity with change of state. Its vis-cosity is perfect for easy use. It hasthe proper density for buoyancywhen total body baths are used." Dr.Agatha Thrash, Home Remedies.Little do we realize the tremen-

dous benefits of something so simpleas a daily bath."The multitude of pores, or little

mouths, through which the body, breathes become clogged and filledwith waste matter. The skin needs to

especially when accompanied by fric-tion,-the skin becomes reddened withan increase of bright-red blood. Thisis due to the vigorous pumping actionof the blood vessels. The circulationbeing hastened, the blood in the veinsis rapidly replaced by fresh arterialblood. The cold and friction, throughthe vasomotor nerves, stimulate theblood vessels to more rapid and ex-treme dilation and contraction. Thiscondition of the blood vessels isknown as active dilation.Hot applications produce results

differing essentially from the aboveconditions. At first the changes ap-pear to be much the same, since theblood vessels are excited to greateractivity. But as the hot application isprolonged, the blood vessels tend toremain dilated, and the pumping ac-tion is lessened; whereas, with thecold the blood vessels are excited todilate and contract vigorously. With'heat, the dilations become greater andthe contractions less and less as theapplication is prolonged. The blood

be carefully and thoroughly cleansed, that the pores may do their work infreeing the body from impurities; theba th is a soother of the nerves. Itpromotes general perspiration, quick-ens the circula tion, overcomes 0 bstruc-tions in the system, and acts benefi-cially on the kidneys and urinaryorgans. Bathing helps the bowels, stomach, and liver, giving energy andnew life to each. It also promotesdigestion, and instead of the system'sbeing weakened it is strengthened. In-stead of increasing the liability to

cold, a bath, properly taken, fortifiesagainst cold because the circulation isimproved arid the uterine organs, which are more or less congested, arerelieved; for the blood is brought tothe surface, and a more easy andregular flow of the blood through allthe blood vessels is obtained."Testimonies, vol. 3, 70, 71As you can see, water applied ex-

ternally to the skin brings abouttremendous results. But these results

accumulates in the dilated capillariesand veins. This results first in aredness of the skin, but later in aduskil).ess, because the circulation isslowed instead of hastened. Thisrelaxed conditjon of the blood vesselsis known as passive dilation. When a cold application such as an

ice bag, is intense and prolonged, acondition results which is the op-posite of that produced by prolongedheat. The blood vessels are at firststimulated to alternate dilation andcontraction, but the dilations becomeless and less while the contractionsincrease in vigor, until a state of con-stant constriction results, the bloodvessels being very small in size andthe skin blanched from absence ofblood. When the body is immersed in a

bath of cool salt water charged withcarbon dioxide gas, the blood vesselsare very powerfulIy stimulated, Sucha bath as this is known as an artifi-cial Nauheim or effervescent bath. Adefective heart, beating rapidly and

27, 1961, carried the foIlowing report:" 'There isn't the slightest doubt inour minds that human cancers arecaused by viruses. To this extent, theyare simply infectious diseases.'"This emphatic sta temen to-the

most positive affirmation to date thatcancer is a virus disease-,came lastweek from Dr. Robert J. Huebner, chief of the Laboratory of InfectiousDiseases at the National Institute ofHealth at Bethesda, Maryland."Dr. Huebner bases his theory on

the belief that the cancer virus liesdormant in the body until certain con-ditions-hormones, age, or irritatingchemicals-give it a chance to cause amalignancy."The difficulty of finding the virus

in the cancer cell is that it often be-comes a part of the genetic materialof the ceIl nucleus.

Alcohol And Brain CeIls

Most of the cell types of thehuman body replace themselves whensome are destroyed. This wonderfularrangement is not true of the braincells. For this reason, we become veryconcerned when brain cells aredestroyed. In spite of the fact thatthere are countless miIlions of brainceIls, none of us want to lose any. Onpage 65 of the June 1970 issue of theReader's Digest it was reported that"Until quite recently, almost all re-searchers believed that occasional im-bibers (social drinkers) suffered nopermanent ill effects from theirdrinking. Physiologists were con-vinced that even when such moderatedrinkers did get 'high,' their slurredspeech and slowed-up reactionsevidenced only a transitory effectupon their brains and nervoussystems."

...Sixty-five years before, on page 59

of her book Temperance, EIIen Whitewrote, "The use of liquor or tobaccodestroys the sensitive nerves of thebrain, and benumbs the sensibilities."(Italics supplied) The Readers Digestarticle goes on to say: "Startling newevidence indicates that even themoderate imbiber may incur some lossof irreplaceable brain cells--everytime he drinks."Physiologists have long recog-

nized that many of the familiar ef-fects of drinking are really manifes-tations of alcohol's effect on ourbrains. In fact, they have establisheda direct relationship between thequantity of alcohol we put into ourblood streams and the area of ourbrain the alcohol affects."The article goes on to explain tha t

the alcohol in the blood causes"sludging" of the red cells. Thisprocess is a lumping of several ceIlswhich in turn plugs up tiny capil-laries and deprives the brain ceIl ofvital oxygen. Without the oxygen thebrain cell dies-never to be replacedagain. Even' it little alcohol has adeadly effect. In her book, Ministry of Healing,

344, we find the foIlowing enlight-ening statement, "The man who hasformed the habit of using intoxicantsis in a desperate situation. His brainis diseased, his will power isweakened. So far as any power inhimself is concerned, his appetite isuncontroIlable. He cannot be reasonedwith or persuaded to deny himself."

The Vitalizing Effectsof Electrici ty

Electricity in the body was notrecognized by science until 1929when the German psychiatrist HansBerger personaIly involved everyoneof us by announcing that we are allindividual electrical generators. Bythis time electricity was well knownwith the invention of the electriclight, radios, motors and many othermarvels of our age. But no onethought that it was vital to thefunctioning of the human body. ReneNoorbergen explains it very well inhis book Ellen G. White, Prophet ofDestiny:"With the publication of a number

of strange little wavy lines, he [HansBerger] tried to convince his skepticalcolleagues that he had uncovered theessence of life: the presence ofelectrical activity in the human brain. In fact, he voiced his conviction thatthese electrical impulses emanatingfrom the human brain were respon-sible for all of our actions andreactions, voluntary and involuntary.

No one, however, took him seriously. His findings, nevertheless, were ofgreat historical significance, and eventhough for several years his wavypictures were not considered a scien-tific discovery and no attempts weremade to duplicate or investigate hisclaims, his discovery could notremain hidden for very long. Now,some forty-three years later, it hasgrown into a science called electro-encephalography, and hundreds oflaboratories the world over are busilyrecording and evaluating the fluc-tuating narrow lines drawn on stripsof paper."As far back as 1869 Ellen White

stated, "The brain nerves whichcommunicate with the entire systemare the only medium through whichheaven can communicate to man, and'affect his inmost life. Whatever dis-turbs the circulation of the electriccurrents in the nervous system lessensthe strength of the vital powers, andthe result is a deadening of the sen-sibilities of the mind." (Testimonies, vol. 2, 347) In 1872 she wrote, "Godendowed man with so great vitalforce that he has wi thstood the ac-cumulation of disease brought uponthe race in consequence of pervertedhabits, and has continued for sixthousand years. This fact of itself isenough to evidence to us the strengthand electrical energy that God gaveto man at his creation." (Testimonies, vol. 3, 138) Speaking of those who donot exercise she wrote again in 1872,"This class fall more readily if at-tacked by disease; the system is vital-ized by the electrical force of thebrain to resist disease." Testimonies, vol. 2,157

Conclusion

Modern medical science has con-firmed to an amazing degree Ellen G.White's statements made decadesbefore the research was done. Inmany of these statements, scientistshad no idea of the principle and ac-tually declared opposite views. SinceEllen White herself made no claim oftechnical medical science and sincethe aggregate of the informationrevealed is of a highly advancednature, we must conclude that thesource of her information was theCreator Himself. through each day, but all is filteredand reabsorbed except for ap-proxima tely one and one-half quartswhich are converted into urine. Theurine-forming unit of the kidney iscalled a nephron. Each kidney hasone million nephrons-each a filteringplant of exquisite design. These units, packed tightly into the outer curve ofeach kidney, if put end to end wouldstretch for fifty miles. If the blood-filtering capillaries in the kidneyscould be stretched out, they wouldstretch more than thirty-five miles.Such fantastic filtering surfaces arecompacted into an area the size oftwo small fists. The kidneys also regulate the vital

electrolyte balance of the body. Oneof these substances is salt (sodium). Our bodies require sodium, but toomuch intake of salt can cause fluid tobe retained in the tissues (edema).Too little can cause dehydration.

Hence it is that the adver-sary of souls directs his temptationsto the enfeebling and degrading of. the physical powers. His success heremeans the surrender to evil of thewhole being. Among denominational members, health and the proper treatment of dis-ease were topics of lively interest. It isnot unusual then that the treatment ofmalaria should be discussed in themidst of the church's General Confer-ence session. Such was the case in 1907,when the following report was given byDr. David Paulson. It may be found inthe General Conference Bulletin ofthat year.

Naturally qumme was consideredjust as indispensable in malaria asmorphine was thought to be followingcertain surgical operations. We soonhad an abundant opportunity to putour principles in regard to quinine toa practical test. It happened to be amalarial summer in Michigan. Duringthe summer something like fifty casescame to us in all ages and in all stagesof the disease. Dr. Kress and I, whocould not consistently reconcile theprevailing routine quinine programwith some of the truths we ha·dstudied, determined we would dis-cover for ourselves what God wouldhelp us to do in malarial cases with-out quinine. One member of our classwas an enthusiastic advocate ofquinine. It was mutually agreed thatas the patients came in, one was to be

assigned to this ph ysician, the nex tone to Dr. Kress and myself, so alter-nating. As he was also an expert inthe use of the microscope havingtaken special training in blood work,he carefully checked every case, notonly his own, but ours, by laboratorywork, so that there was no chance forguess work.We carefully took the temperature

every fifteen minutes. As soon asthere began to be the least rise oftemperature, that was a notificationto us that the chill was approaching. We at once put the patient into a hotblanket pack, bringing on profoundperspiration, and thereby-if we hadhit it right-we invariably preventedthe chill. The patient perspired for atime; we took him out carefully, and-provided it was the alternate-dayvariety-we gave tonic treatments (hotand cold). The following day weagain instituted the temperature-taking program. We invariably foundthat the rise of temperature was muchdelayed, showing that we were gain-ing the ascendancy. We would then gothrough the same program. Fre-quently we did not have to do thisthe third time; the work had beendone, and in a week or ten days thepatient was fully restored to health.

Sometimes we would miss hitting itjust right for several days, and thenthere would be a delay.

After History Comparison Of TheTwo Clinics:

Blanket-Pack Patients:Not one with serious complications.

Ouinine Patients:Some with deafness-irreparable; im-paired mentality; others withnumerous minor complications.

One day an old feeble, broken-down man came in so loaded withmalaria tha tit seemed he was on thebrink of the grave. According to therotation he belonged to the quininelist. The doctor, after sizing up thesituation, said he did not dare to un-dertake his case, and he was turnedover to our list. I will never forgetwhen Dr. Kress and I earnestly toldthe Lord that His principles were ontest, and pleaded with Him to vindi-cate what He had said. We then tookhold of the case. Within a week theman was restored to health. Praise theLord.

Wonderful ProvidenceWe are living in a startling hour in which every day brings new

evidence that we are now facing the events so clearly portrayed by ourlord Jesus in Matthew 24 and luke 21.We are told by Ellen White that the end will come as an
